Quite simply, the registry is a database of values relating to the configuration of your computer and various pieces of software. For example, your user registration info for Windows is stored in the registry, a list of what services start when Windows launches is also stored there, and the path to your most recent documents is there too.

Other ways of storing similar information include .INI and .CFG files, but these are decentralised and harder to manage (not to mention far less secure) than the registry. The downside to this is that if the registry becomes overly large it can affect system performance, and should it become corrupted Windows may not even start.

Several tools are available to manage, clean, scan, repair and backup the registry, and these may result in your computer running more efficiently. Even if you uninstall a program, it may leave traces behind in the registry including some that may point to invalid locations (ie where the program used to be) and Windows will run better with this tidied up.

A backup of the registry can be made from the bundled Windows tool REGEDIT, but this program is less useful for clearing out errors. REGEDIT, as the name suggests, is designed for making alterations to the registry and deleting or changing individual values. Some hidden settings for certain programs are only accessible in this way, and editing the registry is not recommended unless you are clear about what you are doing.

IMPORTANT: a backup should always be made before making any changes to the registry, for as noted above a damaged registry file can prevent Windows from booting.

Tools for scanning and managing the registry include Registry Easy, Registry Gear, and CCleaner.
