My favorite part of this sketch is the cast shadows on the rooftop. I meant for them to all go the same direction.

This is the duty free shop in the United Terminal.

These mountains are worthy of a long digital painting. This sketch does not do them justice.

I started with a sketch this time. Spent a bit more time on the initial sketch than usual. It resulted in a much tighter painting, which I like. More accurate perspective and clearly overlapping shapes.

I spent about an hour on the painting–trying to capture the light before it changed–then spent about another hour touching up gaps and stuff.

The sun has already dipped below the tree line here. A couple of minutes before I started the clouds where all pink. I missed it but decided to paint anyway. The tree is probably a little too bright here.

About 30 minutes later. Everything but the sun itself is significantly darker and less colorful.

A couple of hours spent outside watching the mountains and clouds. The clouds were big and puffy when I sat down like this.

This is about a half hour later. A little different.

I took a break and came back to the same painting. The puffy clouds turned into thin strips.

I thought this was going to be a neat sketch with the row of palms and everything but the scale is wrong here and the pencil I brought was hard and dull. I should have sketched everything smaller with less detail including the ground plane, which would reveal the true height of those palms. Tall.

After 3 hours of APE, I decided that an afternoon sketch was in order. I used the Alvin Mechanical HB and digitally painted in the grays.

This is something that we saw at the Legion of Honor. Upon looking at this now, I think it would have been better to spend about 20 minutes on a rough sketch to study the color palette and composition, and then just paint something from life. But check out my process below to see how I work.
