Thanks so much to Erik Leise for sharing these photos of another bride we had the pleasure of working with this past December. Erik and I worked a several weddings together in the last few months and I hope to have many more this year.

Meet Meghan. She and I had an unexpected surpass in common, we both got surprised with parades on our wedding days. Oh, yeah, parades. That is always a fun surprise but I am convinced that a parade on your wedding day is more good luck that rain.

What a beautiful bride! We really enjoyed working with all Meghans bridesmaids and her mom that day, they were really a great group.

In a few months, this fabulous bridesmaid will be one of our brides. Im excited to work with these girls again!

Oh, and thanks Meghan for introducing me to that new MAC lip color and gloss, Creme Cup and Deelight. It is my current daily lip color and makes me think of you, my fellow product lover!

Style Trends: Braids

Braids have been HUGE this year, for both casual and formal styles. I was thinking of doing a YouTube tutorial on how to DIY some braided styles, like the fishtail braid, shown below. I had a side braid in my hair in the Birchbox Video, did you like that one?

Personally, I love them. Whether you go with a small hidden little guy or a thicker braid, like the one shown below, braids can you fullness and texture.

At every event we do, pretty much every girl tells me before we start that they really don't want it slicked back, tight to the head. I find this amusing because, of course they don't want that, I don't know why they think I would do that to them. After all, it is not your 1st grade dance recital or prom in the 90s. I guess everyone has had a tragic experience having their hair done, so I smile and say ok.

But back to the braids, over time, I have posted some photos to the blog and created a board onPinterest of styles I like to use for inspiration. What do you think of this one?

Ulta is great because it is kind of like a Sephora, meets a department store cosmetic counter, meets the drugstore beauty aisle. Basically its heavenly. Oh, and they have hair products and accessories too!

Well, that was a HOT one!

Kristan's wedding was this past July and I swear this may have been the hottest day that I can remember there ever begin in my life. Trying to keep my cool, I headed to the Jefferson Hotel to do makeup for Kristan, her bridesmaid and her mom. Thankfully, their hotel room had the most glorious A/C so we kept comfortable.

Kristan was a beautiful bride! TemptuPro airbrush makeup really stood up to the test that day. She as beautiful from the time I left her until the end of the event. Congratulations, Kristan! Thank you for having me be a part of your special day.

Its Good Luck to Rain on Your Wedding Day....Right?

A huge thanks to PhotoLadyLove for sharing these stunning photos from a wedding we did last year. I remember this date well, it as back in May. We finished up the group and the bridal party headed off for photos and then to the Valentine for the ceremony.

Several hours later, I was getting ready to head out to see Amos Lee (OMG, love him) at The National, and there came a storm like no other. I was following tweets from the team at LK Events and Design all night tracking the progress of the event. The ceremony was beautiful and they were safely settle into the reception before the storm hit. From the looks of the photos, this crew did not let a little drizzle dampen their parade.

I think it is true, it is good luck to endure a little unexpected weather and give yourself the chance to enjoy the moment with the ones you love.

Loreal Contest: The Next Beauty Guru

About 2 weeks ago, I saw that Loreal was in search of the next YouTube Beauty Guru. Since I have been saying for the last 2 years or so that I was going to master the art of making my own video tutorials, I thought this may be a good time to start.

You may have seen a few of the other videos that I have posted on the channel. Those were a few that I used for practice. This is SO outside my skill set, I have no idea how to record or edit video. I was terrified. But I had my mind made up that I would create something and I would submit it.

So, I learned (at least this much) real quick. Tomorrow is the deadline for entry so technically, I am ahead by 1 day.

Go Big. Go Bold

I love a bold lip color. Especially when you are going for the simple, classic, sophisticated look. But that doesn't mean swipe on some lipstick and call it quits.

First create a flawless foundation, then add color and highlighting to the cheek bones. Keep eyeshadow light and neutral. Finish with big lashes and very blended black or brown liner softly at the lash line.

Most importantly, don't forget to balance it out by emphasizing your brows. This creates strong balance without taking the attention from your lips.

Neutral Shadow Palettes

In my younger days, I was never interested in staples and foundations that you need to build anything. For example, everyone needs basic white socks, tshirts and underwear. But that stuff wasn't fun to buy so that would slip my mind until I needed that basic thing and was left with only brightly colored and patterned things.

Now that I have turned into some kind of responsible grown up type person. I value these basic principals so much and even love them really. I seriously cannot stress the importance of having a neutral eye shadow palette. Since I love to take everything to the extreme, even my newfound practicality, I would even get a few of these to make sure we don't get bored.

Each month, I teach a class at a local modeling agency. One of the things we go over is that what to have on a photo shoot. Neutral eye shadows are a must!

Beautiful 2011 Wedding from Palm Springs, CA

This may have been my favorite wedding of 2011. Normally I don't have favorites because I have the greatest clients and its hard to choose. This particular bride and I go way back.

This past year, 2011, was a big year. I should probably say my own wedding was my #1 of 2011. So, to clarify, this was my favorite wedding to do hair and makeup for and attend as a guest.

I think it was January of 2004 when I first met Nicole. We had both just moved to Los Angeles and we had both just turned 24.....on the same day. Birthday twins!

Nicole became my client when I was just an intern at Kenneth George Salon in Santa Monica. She was often a model for me for cut and color training class nights. She was even part of my "Soiree", which was the graduation of my program before. What fun we had.

When Nicole chose me to do her hair and makeup for her wedding, I was truly honored. I especially loved being back in California. It had been 5 years since I was last in Palm Springs.

I adore this couple. They have been together for 10 years! Photographer, Heather Kincaid, did an amazing job of capturing these two. I love the photo below. I can almost hear Taro's laugh and I just know that Nicole has just said something hilarious.

I have shouted from the rooftops my love for the original Urban Decay Naked Palette. I have mentioned it here many times and also named in my favorite product for Belle Magazine September issue beauty feature.

Bridal Hair

This was my first wedding of 2012. I wasn't expecting to get started this early, normally January there isn't much going on for events until a bit later. When I got the call from Allison that week, we had to kick it into over drive to get the plans in order to do hair for the bride, her daughter and sister.

It was a beautiful day. I met the group at the Virginia Center Crossings to do their hair. As you can see from the lovely photos by E. Leise Photo Design, these ladies were stunning.

Beauty we love from the Grammy's

Did you enjoy the Grammy's? What was your favorite moment or performance? My favorite part of award shows is getting to see what our favorite stars chose for style. Here are some of my favorites.

Dianna Agron, from Glee, is just stunning. I love this dramatic eye and bold earrings. I love the sleek bun with some texture and height on top. So classy!

Keri Hilson looks amazing in this modernized, Old Hollywood glam look. The purples compliment her skin town and are a nice bold pop of color with the soft pink gown.

Because I LOVE Zooey, she has to get a shout out! Seriously I am borderline super fan over here. Zooey's look is very well done and true to her personal style. She is keeping the makeup clean and simple, so her eyes and those famous BANGS are the focal point. I love the fabulous hair accessory and one shoulder gown.

Smooth and Sweet

Are you getting ready for Valentine's Day tomorrow?

With all the very cold weather we are having lately, it hasn't been easy to keep ourselves moisturized. This time of year, chapped lips can be the worst!

Keep your lips smooth and sweet with this little treat. Last week, I picked up this EOS lip balm at Walgreens. I just need a little treat for myself and a new little product always makes me happy.

This is when my finance guru husband would launch into the history of the theory of the Lipstick Effect and how women splurge on cosmetic items during difficult times. Then I would have to remind him that I am aware of this theory and this purchase was not a luxury item (it was $3.29!) and my only crisis at the moment is that my lips are a little dry and Im freezing. I don't know about you, but Spring needs to come on already.

Do you exfoliate?

Do you exfoliate? Well, if not, you should. Let me tell you why.

When we are young, our skin replenishes itself often. When we are babies, we completely replenish our skin cells every 2 weeks! By aging slows this process. When we hit the ripe age of 3o, this process takes closer to a month.

You can speed this process up by exfoliating. Use a gentle over the counter scrub (brands like Olay and Loreal make affordable options) once or twice a week. If you really want to step it up you can use a motorized option over the manual DIY way. I love my Clarisonic and Olay makes a pro brush too.

So, what do you do?

I am sure that is a question you get asked all the time. I know I get asked that quite often. It is a great way for someone to find out a little bit about you when you first meet.

Well....what do I do....I am a stylist and a makeup artist.

Since I am a freelancer, that means I do not work in a salon or at a makeup counter. I am in a different place every day, working with different kinds of people.

Yes, I do weddings almost every weekend. I also work with a local modeling agency as a stylist on their shoots and I also teach the styling class to their new talent. The style class is the run down on what to do and how to be prepared if a stylist isn't there to do it for them. I work in print and video commercial production. Its funny because people find this very fascinating and sometimes a little hard to understand. In Allure magazine awhile back, they had some quick facts of my industry. It is always a nice surprise to find out that one of my clients has been featured on a blog or in a magazine. This past Friday, I got the nice surprise that client Amelia's wedding had been featured here on Elizabeth Ann Designs. This bride has a great style and her wedding was super fabulous. After I saw what this girl had planned for her bridal portrait, you remember the Marie Antoinette inspired shoot, I knew that she was going to bring it.

Her photographer, Korie Lynn, captured this event beautifully. A huge thanks goes out to Korie Lynn for sharing some of these photos from the wedding.

Preparing for your Dress Rehearsal

The trial run or, as I like to call it, the dress rehearsal, is a very important step in your planning process. You want to make sure that your stylist understands your vision. You want to go into your wedding day totally relaxed, knowing that you are confident in the decisions that you have made regarding hair and makeup. Most importantly, this time gives you an idea of how much time it will take and what it will look like 4,8, 12 hours after you have it done. This is your opportunity to remove the fear of the unknown.

This is the time to communicate with your stylist details of the over all theme and feel of your event. Create a inspiration board or a collection of photos to share. Pinterest.com is an excellent tool that you can use to organize this information. You can follow my boards here.

What would you include in your inspiration board? I like to see photos of the bride’s dress, bridesmaid’s dresses, flowers you have chosen, the location of the ceremony and reception and any other details that make it clear what the event will be like.

Find photos of hair or makeup concepts that you like. If you cannot find photos of styles that you love, showing examples of things that you do not love can sometimes be a great reference point. You may not love everything about every photo you can use them as a reference point to show what you like or do not like about each style.

Bring your accessories, including any hair clips or combs and your veil. You may want to try on jewelry, like earrings or necklaces to see the whole look come together.

You have many options for how you will have your hair and makeup done on your wedding day. You can hire a professional, go to a salon or makeup counter, have a friend do it for you, or do it yourself. Regardless of which of these options that you choose, make sure to do a test run to see what the experience will be like. From there you can make any adjustments to the plan, but you will not get a do over if you wait until the day of the event to try it out.

When should you schedule this appointment? You have some options here too. You can schedule it to help you interview or choose your stylist to make sure you are a good fit. You could also schedule this with your final dress fitting or bridal portraits so you can see the entire look come together.
