New Year's Resolutions

Can you believe that it is already February? Is it just me or is 2012 moving faster than 2011 did?

A lot of people are very serious about their resolutions. They proudly announce theirs, but we rarely hear how they are doing a few months in. I don't usually like to say when I do have them because the accountability can be scary. Im feeling brave today, so I'll throw mine out there. I figure it is time to check in with you and see how you are doing. What kind of resolutions did you make and how are you doing so far?

Even though I don't make them at the New Year, I am constantly trying to do better at certain things. These are usually the top ones on my list.

Drink more water. Its great for your skin!
Get more (beauty) sleep.
Work out every day.
Get organized and stay that way.

This year I had some big things on my list. My list: get a new website out, explore more speaking opportunities, incorporate more videos into my marketing. So far I have touched on two of those. I had the opportunity to speak with a panel of my fellow professionals just last week at The Special Event show in Tampa, Florida. What an experience!

I used this as a deadline to get my website updated, since it had not been updated in 2 years. With the help of some amazing friends of mine (mostly Julie Renee Photography), I got phase 1 of my site up and out in a week. Thanks, Julie, I could not have done it without your encouragement.

It isn't perfect, which is why I haven't made a huge deal of it yet. Once phase 2 goes up, you will hear me screaming it from the rooftops. Be patient. It is coming soon. Man, getting back on the daily blogging schedule is tough! Thanks for your patience. I haven't down so great with those first four that I listed, I think this month I will be better! Tangerine! Pantone Color of the Year 2012

Tangerine Tango, the Pantone Color of the Year 2012

Personally, I couldn't wait for this announcement. Color is my life. So obviously, I was dying to know what the Pantone color of 2012 would be. Personally, I think they made an EXCELLENT choice with Tangerine Tango. See, for the longest time I have been deeply attached to purple for many reasons. I am, after all, a proud LSU alumna. It was the primary color in wedding earlier this year.

The secondary color for my wedding was orange. I am sure that when you hear purple and orange, you may question my sanity. Let me assure you it was a beautiful combination. The further I got into wedding planning I became more and more a fan of orange. Since the wedding, I have decided that orange may be taking the lead for my new favorite color. If you see my new throw pillows for the living room sofa and other new home decor, there is a whole lot of orange happening in my house. Im still not wearing too much of it but throwing it in for pops of color any chance I get.

Oh, thats not true. My favorite lip color is a bit on the tangerine side and OPI's Cajun Shrimp and My Chihuahua Bites are my favorite polish colors, so there is my wearable orange.

Just now I googled (just to see when the news would come out) Pantone's 2012 Color of the Year. It was announced yesterday! Check out Pantone's full blog post for the announcement details. Here is what I found on Phoenix New Times website:

Let's hear it for 17-1463, Tangerine Tango.

"The 2011 color of the year, PANTONE 18-2120 Honeysuckle, encouraged us to face everyday troubles with verve and vigor," writes Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. "Tangerine Tango, a spirited reddish orange, continues to provide the energy boost we need to recharge and move forward."
Pantone makes the announcement every year and (literally) sets the tone for the year's design color schemes from wall paint to bridesmaid dresses.

And if last year's Honeysuckle was a color to ward off the blues and get the energy going, Tangerine Tango, is an extra shot.

"Sophisticated but at the same time dramatic and seductive, Tangerine Tango is an orange with a lot of depth to it," writes Eiseman. "Reminiscent of the radiant shadings of a sunset, Tangerine Tango marries the vivaciousness and adrenaline rush of red with the friendliness and warmth of yellow, to form a high-visibility, magnetic hue that emanates heat and energy."

Congratulations! You are Engaged!

Congratulations! He asked, you said yes, now you have a wedding to plan! So much fun and excitement awaits. For many of you, this will be your first time to dive into a project like this. Some of you may have been bridesmaids or even Maids of Honor, but this time (your time) there are so many more things to think about.

Let me help you with the one that I am most familiar with, how to find the right hairstylist or makeup artist for you.

First things first, determine what you will need from your stylist for this event

Here are some things you may consider. Do you want an individual, or a team, to come to your location or are you looking to make an appointment at a studio space? Do you want one person who does both hair and makeup or are you looking for only one or the other?

How many people will be in your party? Which of those bridesmaids, mothers, grandmothers, flower girls want their hair or makeup or both done? What is the budget for hiring someone to do this? Do you have a specific time frame that you will need to work within?

Are you looking for anything specific? Some stylists work in a studio or on location only, some stylists may offer both options. Are you looking for someone who specializes in updos or formal event styling? Not every hairstylist does this so find one who specializes what you want. Not every makeup artist offers airbrush makeup, if this is important to you, find one who offers this and specializes in bridal.

Find the Artist who is Right for You

Now that you have determined what you want this person to do for you, the next step is to find the right artist for you. Ask for referrals from other vendors specifically the venue, your coordinator and photographer. These are people who work closely with stylists often and would be mostly to have one to recommend. They will probably have someone they have worked with before that could be a good personality fit and be able to achieve the look and style you want.

Ask your friends who have recently gotten married (if you liked their style), who they used for hair and makeup. Find out what the experience was like with everything from requesting information to how the day of the event was handled.

Look online. Most experienced stylists have portfolios online for you to look at examples of their work.

Contact the Artist

First, ask if they are available on your date. Don’t wait, I have booked dates as far as 18 months out. Especially if you have a popular date in April, May, September or October beat the rush and secure your artist as soon as possible to make sure you get the one you want.

Ask questions to find out if they fit what it is that you are looking for.

FInd out price and booking information. Determine if they fit your budget and if they have a minimum booking requirement. Make sure that you are clear on all the information required to officially secure your date on the artist’s schedule and when your final payment is due.

Reviewing 2011 to Plan 2012

You are probably wondering where I have been! You probably thought that I would have done my 2011 recap by now, since I usually do it on New Years Eve. You are probably wondering where I have been this last week. I apologize for my silence, fear not, I am still here.

Resolutions are not really my thing. However, when I get to the end of the year, I do like to take a little time to look back and reflect on the wild and crazy year. This was last year's recap, seems like a million years ago.

We are all so busy, rushing from one thing to the next that it is easy to forget to stop and be thankful. There are so many things that I am excited about for 2012. Before I jump into these new goals, to do lists, adventures and more. I do want to share what I was thankful for in 2011.

This was my first year of living in Richmond, Va. I have met some wonderful friends and worked with some amazing people who have really made this transition go smoothly for us. This year, I have had pleasure of being a part of a lot of weddings, 47 of them to be exact.

Many of these weddings were in Virginia. I always hope for a fun destination wedding to come my way so I was so happy to travel to Palm Springs, California for an incredible wedding . My former L.A. client who now lives in Austin, TX traveled to the dessert to marry her best friend in September and I could not have been happier to be a part of this day. This year, I was actually on the other side, for once. On March 19, 2011, I married my best friend in New Orleans. It was a little strange to be the client but it sure was nice to have my hair done. I did my own makeup because being the control freak that I am, I needed to do what I do. It was amazing. Following a wonderful 3 days in New Orleans with our amazing friends and family, we enjoyed our honeymoon in Costa Rica. What a wonderful experience. Beautiful photos by Jason Cohen.

I continue to work with Modelogic Wilhelmina and Modelogic Image. I enjoy the monthly photoshoots with new talent, photographed by Todd Wright. I love teaching my styling class to the new talent. We have the best time.

There have been a lot of fun jobs this year with ABC's Shark Tank , the Zacharius Ganey Health Institue, Genworth Financial, Ladies Home Journal, Bon Secour Hospital, the Virginia Film Office, Weight Watchers magazine and more. You may remember when I was in Atlanta over the summer. I am pretty sure it was that hottest week ever. Working on the SunTrust job was a lot of fun. The photographer, Chris Stanford is great to work with. All of the talent and crew were so wonderful, that you forget about the long days and crazy heat.

So, I would say that it has been a great year. One for the record books really. I cannot wait to see what 2012 will bring. I have tons of goals, both personal and professional that I am looking forward to sharing with you. I am working on some great product reviews with tons of contests and give aways that you will love. Thank you so much for your support.

In the spirit of starting fresh and organized, I am taking the next few weeks to set my 2012 up for success. Right now I am working on my new website and branding (coming soon!), about to head to Tampa to speak at The Special Event, and cleaning/organizing my office like a mad woman. I am organizing blog posts now that start back publishing on January 30th. See you soon!

We take this time to give thanks for those special people around us. I am thankful for you and wish you an incredible holiday season. We will soon be ringing in the New Year and I am certain that 2012 has even more wonderful things in store for us all.

Style Trends: Braids

Braids have been HUGE this year.

Personally, I love them. Whether you go with a small hidden little guy or a thicker braid, like the one shown below, braids can you fullness and texture.

At every event we do, pretty much every girl tells me before we start that they really don't want it slicked back, tight to the head. I find this amusing because, of course they don't want that, I don't know why they think I would do that to them. After all, it is not your 1st grade dance recital or prom in the 90s. I guess everyone has had a tragic experience having their hair done, so I smile and say ok.

But back to the braids, over time, I have posted some photos to the blog and created a board on Pinterest of styles I like to use for inspiration. What do you think of this one?

Japanese Anime Inspired Shoot

Naked2 by Urban Decay

I have shouted from the rooftops my love for the original Urban Decay Naked Palette. I have mentioned it here many times and also named in my favorite product for Belle Magazine September issue beauty feature.

This palette is seriously amazing. I wear it everyday and I get compliments on it all the time. This week, I see that they have come out with the Naked2 palette. The last thing I need to do is buy more makeup but I don't think I will be able to resist. Its beautiful!

Last week I got a great surprise from one of my clients. (I don't know if I have mentioned this but I have the best clients EVER). I popped into my Facebook page and saw this wonderful post from one of my October brides. She left this nice message:

A New Way To Use Cheek Stain

Awhile back I posted about this cheek stain by Benefit that I had fallen in love with. Check out that full post here.

Now, this may be old news to some of you but I just recently put it to the test. This product is sold as a cheek and lip stain. I hadn't used the lip stain option because I was so obsessed with the cheek color. Recently I was traveling, and if you can believe this, I (of all people) didn't have lipstick with me. See, I am obsessed and always keep a little makeup bag with about 10-12 lip colors. I had left it in the car and had to get creative.

Not a problem! I used the pinky Posietint and the Benetint for a lips stain and I LOVE it. Now I use it everyday as a base. It is waterproof and sheer so it is the perfect starting point. Why didn't haven't I been doing this forever? I can't wait to try the coral-ish color, Cha-Cha tint. How fun!

Goody Spin Pins

I have told you about these fab little spin pins before but I feel compelled to mention them again. Maybe you need an easy DIY undo option for a holiday party. Maybe you are searching for a perfect stocking stuffer. Who knows but everyone with at least shoulder length hair needs these.

Months ago, I met my pal Katelyn James (fabulous photographer), for lunch and she had her hair swept back in lovely, low undo. I guess we are creatures of habit because we met again last week at the same cafe and these spin pins made yet another appearance. Katelyn has fabulous hair that always looks great, so it is of course the first thing I always notice and compliment her on how she had styled it that day. She tells me that she has discovered these Goody Spin Pins and that they are wonderful and I must run out and get some for myself. Then, I was sold. I ran right out and picked some up for myself and my life has been forever changed.

Let me tell you, these things are the BEST! Reasons that I love them:

They are super easy to use. Seriously.

All Natural, Chemical-Free Way to Clean & Care for Your Makeup Brushes…

If you want to keep your makeup brushes looking and feeling brand new, then thoroughly cleaning them on a regular basis is absolutely necessary! There’s a lot to take into consideration when choosing an effective, yet gentle cleanser for your brushes. Chemically-based spray cleaners can cause skin irritation, and shorten the life of your brushes. If you’re using hand soap, body wash, dish soap or traditional hair shampoo as a cleanser, this is a no-no, too. All of these have irritating synthetic foaming agents such as SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate), as well as synthetic dyes and fragrances. These chemicals can cause breakouts, and dry out the bristles of brushes. To keep your synthetic or real hair brushes fresh and fabulous, follow these simple steps!

First, replace your old cleaning method with Dr. Bronner’s Magic Liquid Soap. This is one of my favorite products because it’s 100% chemical free, certified organic, certified fair trade, multi-use and super affordable! There are several different kinds to choose from, but all of them work very well! For brush cleaning, I recommend the “Tea Tree Oil” or “Lavender” kind because of their anti-bacterial/ anti-septic properties. If you have super sensitive skin, I would try the “Baby Mild/ Scent Free” liquid soap.

Next, wet your brush with warm water then pour a teeny bit of Dr. Bronner’s Magic Liquid Soap on the brush or in the palm of your hand. Swirl the brush in a circular motion in your hand. Once it’s foamy, rinse with hot water. Repeat until water rinses completely clear.

For my foundation, concealer and powder brushes, I usually apply soap and rinse with hot water 3 times to make sure they are super clean. These are the brushes that accumulate the most bacteria, so to avoid breakouts, shampoo your concealer/ foundation brushes after every use… Your powder brushes should be shampooed about twice a week.

Last, once your brushes are rinsing clean, squeeze out any excess water, shape, then lay flat on a dry, clean towel. I usually let my brushes dry over night.

Richmond Wedding

In September of this year, I had the pleasure of working with Barbara for her wedding. She was so incredibly easy to work with, I swore she was "too good to be true". I remember when we met for her trial and I asked her how she was thinking of wearing her hair, she said, "I don't know, whatever you think."

Barbara is a gorgeous woman, with beautiful skin and fabulous hair. When you have a great canvass, it is best to let it speak for itself. Even though, the weather was a bit drizzly that day, Barbara was a radiant bride.

Neutral Shadow Palettes

In my younger days, I was never interested in staples and foundations that you need to build anything. For example, everyone needs basic white socks, tshirts and underwear. But that stuff wasn't fun to buy so that would slip my mind until I needed that basic thing and was left with brightly colored and patterned things.

Now that I have turned into some kind of responsible grown up type person. I value these basic principals so much and even love them really. I seriously cannot stress the importance of having a neutral eye shadow palette.

Each month, I teach a class at a local modeling agency. One of the things we go over is that what to have on a photo shoot. Neutral eye shadows are a must!

This Too Faced palette is $36 and comes with easy to follow instructions on how create the perfect neutral eye look.

Last year, around this time, when I first moved to Virginia is when I met my pal Katelyn James. If you have ever experienced Katelyn, you know that she is a powerful force of energy. Good things come from this girl. She is a very hard worker and super passionate about her life, clients, work and more. I love her. And you would too.

A few weeks ago, Katelyn held her Fall the Workshop Experience here in Richmond. I quickly jumped at the chance to be a part of this one. See, last year, I had to decline her invitation to the spring workshop (The Sugar Shoot), because I had other plans that day. March 19th, was a big day for me that year. I had a wedding in New Orleans, where I got to be the bride.

The morning of the workshop, which was held at the Virginia Center of Architecture, was a cold and misty one. I headed out to meet our bride, Annamarie, to get started on hair and makeup. Annamarie has the most beautiful (but very long and thick) hair. After we wrapped up hair and makeup, I followed Ryan and Annamarie to the Virginia Center for Architecture, where the workshop was already in progress. While the photographers took a break for lunch, we got the finishing touches together for the couple so they could be photographed.

This time of year is really fun. My favorite part? Fancy parties!

Why? Fancy parties are a great time to out all out with great hair, makeup, jewelry, shoes, pretty dresses. Not to mention the great food and fun times your will have!

I was chatting with a girlfriend today and we were trying to decide how she would wear her hair to her holiday party this year. Here are some of the fun styles we found.

Lip Treatment

DIY Hair Color at Home

Being a long time behind the chair stylist, I can tell you that going pro is the best choice when it comes to coloring your hair. However, my years as a professional stylist have taught me that people will always try the DIY option and when it is unsuccessful the pros will be the ones to fix it. My goal with this post is to educate clients, if you want to go the DIY route, here are some tips to help eliminate or reduce errors.

Stay in the safe range. When you do a single process color (1 color applied all over your whole head), stay within 2 shades of your natural color. Two shades lighter or darker, anything more severe than that is trouble.
Shampoo 1 day prior to coloring. The natural oils can protect your scalp from chemicals in the color.
Avoid the Ring. Protect your skin around the hairline by applying petroleum jelly in a 1 inch barrier around your hairline to avoid stains from the color. If you do get color on your skin, remember this pro trick, color removes color. Before you shampoo, rub your hair with color still on it onto the skin to remove the stain. Makes no sense but I swear it works.
Keep the ends from "grabbing". When retouching your new growth or "roots", you will be tempted to pull it all the way to the ends. The ends occasionally will need a splash of color but if you do it every time those porous ends will "grab" the color and the result will be much darker than you want. Only pull through the ends for the last 5 minutes, every other time you color. If your hair is really porous and tends to suck up color like a sponge, mist with water or leave in conditioner before pulling the color thru.

These are some of what I consider the most important tips. If you color at home, feel free to comment and add your own tips. There are so many more important things to know about getting amazing color. Education is what makes the pros so good at what they do! Do your homework or trust a professional, it is more expensive to have them fix it.

I can't believe I just did that!

Ok, I have a confession to make.......

I participated in Cyber Monday. Let the record show, that with all these official shopping days we have lately, the only one I really support is Small Business Saturday. I don't actually get to shop because I am small business who is working on Saturday but I support the message. Im getting sidetracked!

However, in my defense, as usual I wasn't aware that it was Monday or Cyber Monday. I tweeted that I was so pleased with how 2012 treated me today! 2012! Then it had to be pointed out to me (twice before I got it) that I was a year ahead. Typical, I am pretty sure my brain is moving more quickly and almost always a little ahead of where I actually am.

The fact that I did this shocks me because I never shop on Black Friday EVER and I almost never shop online for anything. Mostly because I love the whole process of shopping and going home with my purchases. The UPS/FedEx person is lovely but removes the thrill of my acquisition. What can I say, I never take the easy way.

So before I knew it, I had gotten so excited about this limited edition Nars blush palette and I had to order one before I missed the opportunity. I was not going to miss going to miss this baby.

Thoughts for the Holidays

Happy Holidays!

The holiday season is upon us. Last week, we enjoyed the Thanksgiving holiday. I love this time of year. Spending time with friends and family, sharing what we are grateful for and eating/drinking/being merry, there is nothing better.

This year, my husband and I met his parents and brother in South Carolina. We spent the week enjoying the most beautiful weather and soaking up the sun on Kiawah Island. If you know anything about me at all, you know that I live for the beach and sunny/70 degree weather. It is our last full day here, so I am really taking it in before we head back to Richmond and whine about the winter until April.

The first day we arrived at the house, I found an old copy of Skirt, a free monthly magazine in the closet. It is the July 2011 edition, but when I read the cover, the words are meant to speak of freedom. Since freedom is something to be thankful for, I felt it was worth sharing. These are words to remember year around.

Above is the photo of the magazine. The message is strong, I wanted to write it down so that I could remember it. If I am writing it down, then I thought you may enjoy it too, so I will share.
