June 6, 2010: Friendly vs. Orchard Valley Sting

Yesterday, we played a friendly against the Orchard Valley Sting, a U19 team (the Santa Cruz Breakers 94G is a U16 team). This was the second game of a mini-jamboree in which we played two games. This was the first time we had played against the Sting, although we have played against the Orchard Valley Storm in our own age group for years.

We had two nice goals in the first half, gave up an own goal late in the first half, and then held the Sting scoreless during the second half to come away with a 2-1 victory.

June 6, 2010: Friendly vs. Burlingame Fury

Yesterday, we played a friendly against the Burlingame Fury, a U17 team (the Santa Cruz Breakers 94G is a U16 team). This was the first game of a mini-jamboree in which we played two games. This was the first time we had played against the Fury, although we have played against Burlingame teams in our own age group in the past.

We were able to score our first goal with only a couple of minutes remaining in the first half, and then a second goal on a penalty kick several minutes into the second half, and we came away with a 2-0 victory.

May 22, 2010: Friendly vs. Central Valley Chilipeppers

For years, one of the most challenging opponents the Santa Cruz County Breakers 94G team has faced is the Central Valley Chilipeppers. Although we’ve beat them twice and tied them twice, our history against the Chilipeppers has not been great. More often than not, we have fought hard against them but ended up losing.

On May 22, 2010, we played a friendly against them and were pleased to defeat the Chilipeppers 2-0. As they had recently been runners-up in the CYSA state championships, it was nice to come away with a victory. It was encouraging to sense everything our coach has been teaching us come together and be reflected in an actual game.

April 17, 2010: CYSA State Cup Round of 16

On April 17, 2010, we played in the “Sweet 16” round of the 2010 CYSA State Cup tournament against Fremont MVU. We had never progressed this far in the CYSA State Cup tournament. It was a hard-fought match. Regulation time ended with the score tied 0-0, and we proceeded to overtime (golden goal). Unfortunately, about one-and-a-half minutes into the first overtime period, Fremont scored on a header at point blank range off of a corner kick. I was able to get my hand on the ball, but not stop the shot completely. It was disappointing to not proceed further, but we are determined to continue to improve.
