We continue to celebrate during our worship service at 10:30 am with the theme “Welcome Back to Church and to the Bible”. Our Sunday School students will be a major part of the worship service. The Kids Choir will make their first appearance for the 2010-11 season by singing several numbers. The Adult Choir will also present their anthem, “Come as a Child”. After worship, we will have a covered dish lunch with hot dogs and chicken fingers provided. Then, its time to play. We can toss bean bags, play kickball, yell “bingo” (if you win) and play lots of other games. If you are really energetic, you can bounce in the Moon Walk. All in all, a great time is planned and we are looking forward to seeing everyone having a good time as we return to our fall routine.

My brother, John, brought catfish from Louisiana and cooked them up for us one night. His wife even brought her special potato salad. Yum-yum! It was especially good to be able to preach where my Papa Dollar and my dad preached many years ago in Alabama. I received a very nice reception especially since most of the congregation had never heard a woman preacher before. There were lots of Dollars in the pews that day but they did not fit into the offering plate. There were eighteen first cousins on the Dollar side at our get togethers. Our one aunt that is remaining is 90 and was present as the family matron.
There were four of us Partridge cousins together in North Carolina. My cousin David had put out the crab pots a couple of days before we arrived so we had plenty of fresh crab meat and shrimp. I shopped and went out on the beach while there. Archie enjoyed pier fishing and going out into the Bogue Sound fishing. I cooked the fish from the Sound trip (Red Drum). They were delicious. Mom taught John and me well. Although we never cooked growing up – we watched. It was her kitchen. Needless to say – we ate too much while we were away.
I know that we have some good voices in our congregation. I am appealing to you to consider joining the choir. We really need you. Tina finished her internship which means her daughter, Sarah, is also no longer with us. Kristi has to finish her last year at Penn State on the main campus which means she can’t be with us this year. It only takes one night a week and Sunday morning. Please consider joining us as we sing praises to God. This is a wonderful way to give a gift to support your church. Just try it – we have a good time.
On a somber note – it was really a shock to many people when they heard of the death of Rev.Bob Herrala. When I heard the news I couldn’t believe it. I had just been with him the morning before for our prayer meeting. He was only a year older than I am and was planning to retire next summer. At his funeral he was remembered fondly.
The reason I mention this is that it has made me think about what will people will say about me when I am no longer in this world. This comes from Leonard Sweet in his book “A Cup of Coffee at the Soul Café”.
“God wants us to be like cathedral art, the stained glass that sheds his light on the world around us. Keith Green, wrote his own version of this in his song, “Stained Glass,” taken from Matthew 5:16: “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

We are like windows
Stained with colors
Of the rainbow
Set in a darkened room
’Til the Bridegroom
Comes to shine Thru.
Then the colors fall around our feet
Over those we meet
Coloring all the gray that we see,

What a beautiful day!

After the service came our picnic. Yum! Yum! Such good food there was and plenty of it. Ron had fried turkeys in his big fryer for something special and the children really enjoyed the moonwalk bouncy thing. They had lots of fun too when Cindy came out and poured all the ice and water in a big bucket for them to play in. It was a good hot day to chill off with ice. The kids even had fun putting ice down the backs of some of the grown-ups (or those who claim that status). I know I had a good time and I believe everyone in attendance did. We sat so long that we finally got a good hard rain but even that was fun since we could sit under our new shelter and just watch.

I know I have said this before but it can’t be said too much! Many thanks to all those who worked on the pavilion and got it finished in record time. There are just too many to name and you know who you are – male and female. There is some landscaping to do yet but that will be done when we are able.

I will be here the first Sunday of August but on the afternoon of the 4th I will leave for vacation. It will be real nice to see lots of relatives in Alabama (my brother and his wife will meet us there for the Dollar reunion) and then Archie and I will go on to North Carolina to meet up with some of my cousins on my mom’s side. We haven’t seen some of these folks in such a long time. I only have one aunt left and she is 90 – my dad’s sister – and you can bet she will critique me when I preach in Alabama.

Tina will be here on the 8th to preach. I thought some of you would like to see her again.

It’s been a busy summer and now we are preparing for our Rally Day which will be on Sept. 12th. We are praying for a big turnout for our beginning of Sunday School. We are going to have lots of fun. Let’s all invite someone new for the beginning of our new season. I know this isn’t until Sept. but it will give you time to think about who you can bring and to save the date on your calendar.

Pray for Archie and me while we are away. I will be praying for you.

Country Concert for Cystic Fibrosis

As we have always done since teaming up with Faith and Stairville UMC, we have picked a way to help someone through our VBS. This year we have “adopted” Paige Ceaser who is four years old and has Cystic Fibrosis. As the Web site for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation states, the disease causes the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs, leading to life-threatening lung infections, and obstructs the pancreas, stopping natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food. Our mission project will be specifically for Paige to help with expenses for her treatments. On August 22, the 3rd annual fundraiser in Paige’s honor known as the “Country Concert and Motorcycle Ride” will be held which will benefit the Cystic Fibrosis foundation. If you want to know more about the concert and CF, please check the web page, www.cfconcert.com. You can find additional information and updates for Paige at www.PaigeCeaser.com.

Registration sheets are on the table in the narthex or you can call the church (868-5675) and let me know. We would like to have a general idea of how much material needs to be ordered as soon as possible.

On Wednesday, June 9, we held another planning meeting. Decorations were finalized and supplies ordered. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, July 14 to be sure we have everything ordered correctly and tell the ride guides (teenagers) what they need to know to help the younger kids.

Through the program, we will help children Choose to BELIEVE that Jesus is God’s promised Savior, Choose to ACT and care for others, Choose FORGIVENESS from Jesus, Choose to OBEY Jesus even when it’s hard and Choose JESUS as our guide and source of wisdom! If you would like to help out, we welcome you to assist in planning this special event to help our children learn to make good choices. Thanks for all your support!

300 CLUB FUNDRAISER and SILENT AUCTION:

THANKS to everyone who made this fundraiser a GREAT SUCCESS!!!! Everyone was raving about what a fantastic time they had. The weather was hot but a cool breeze flowed through our new pavilion, thanks to everyone who worked so hard to get it done before the fundraiser (even working in the rain or hot sunshine). People were asking if this was our first time for a 300 Club and when told that it was, they were surprised. Everything went so well and people are looking forward to this becoming an annual event. It certainly was a success from a financial standpoint also, as it raised approximately $4,000. We are really looking forward to another one next year.

Watching the guys of the church put up our new pavilion was so inspiring. So many men – many of whom didn’t know each other so well were working so hard [...]]]> What!!! It can’t be July already. I thought things would be a little less busy once summer arrived but that has not been the case.

Watching the guys of the church put up our new pavilion was so inspiring. So many men – many of whom didn’t know each other so well were working so hard together. Thanks to all of you. And some of our women brought them food to eat and drink to quench their dry throats from working under the hot sun. And then being able to use it for our new fundraiser was great! And our fundraiser was such a success (such beautiful weather)! I met so many new people from our community that I had never seen before. They were having a wonderful time and hoping that we had plans to repeat the day next year. It was a lot of work but all the crew was working together so well. It took a lot of planning and a lot of just plain hard work. There would have been lots of opportunity for more people to have been involved. Keep it in mind for next year. You wouldn’t have to commit a lot of time – anything would be needed and appreciated. There is a call for kitchen help, cooking, cleaning up, collecting items for the Silent Auction, setting up tables, taking down tables, moving chairs – just lots of things. If we all worked together all of us could be a little less tired at the end of the day. And what wonderful fellowship there is as we cooperate with one another to take a little of the load off one another. That’s a real family.

And then there was the exciting celebration of the ordination of Becky Broyan. Many of you watched her as she grew into a young woman who is now in full service to God as an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ. Thank all who supported her financially and with your prayers as she was going through the process.
Congratulations Becky – you made it!

There is still a little to do to put the finishing touches on the pavilion and I just know that we will get lots of use from it. Hopefully we will have some of our Sunday morning worship outside this summer. How beautiful it will be to sit in the midst of God’s creation as we come together in worship to praise God’s name and bring God glory.
And the month of July is busy as well. We look forward each year to our service at Old River Church which will be on the 18th this year. And please all join us for our church picnic on the 25th after church – another opportunity to use our pavilion. Then that evening our Vacation Bible School begins at 6:30. This year it will be held at Stairville. Please encourage any children you know to come and join us. It will be lots of fun and very educational for all. And oh yea, you are welcome to stay and help out.
You are just the best. Thanks for all you do. Thanks to you for continuing to keep our church in your prayers. Every day I thank God for you. Keep up the great work.

That corresponds to 11:00 am on Sunday morning, May 2. Sharon Moyer set up her camera in church, pointing it toward a scene that represents comfort and God’s grace for many of us. BEHIND THE PHOTO…

A few weeks ago someone emailed me telling me about a unique photo experience being generated through The New York Times. Photographers around the world were being encouraged to take a photo on a particular day at a specific time to give a snapshot of our world. It was referred to as “A Moment in Time.” The idea intrigued me. I mentioned it to a few friends who also enjoy taking pictures and they just brushed it off by saying “I’ll be in church”. I thought, well, so will I and that became my idea for a photo. Sunday morning for me means being in worship. I took the idea to the congregation stating that I felt as Christians this could provide a powerful message without uttering a single word and since they were exactly where I was on Sunday morning I felt we could all make a statement together.

On Sunday, May 2nd, I came to church a little early & set up my camera in the choir loft. I aimed my camera at our beautiful stained glass window depicting Jesus as the shepherd with the sheep. As the clock ticked down I nervously focused the image I wanted to present and took a few photos. That particular Sunday was a unique one at Emmanuel as we were housing a few gentlemen from VISION, a group that seeks to find shelter for homeless individuals and this would be our week to be the host church. The first week of the month is also communion Sunday at Emmanuel. During the passing of the elements I noticed that two of the men took the wine, then smelled it, looked at each other and then did not drink it. I realized that they had probably made a pledge not to drink alcohol and at that moment chose to honor that pledge. How humbling and inspiring it was to have witnessed that conviction….all happening under the watchful eyes of Jesus.

After the service, we had a coffee hour in the fellowship hall. Then a few individuals changed their clothes and got ready to participate in the road cleanup our church has been a part of for quite a few years. Since I had my camera, I asked everyone to just pause out front so I could take a picture. When I was positioning everyone I noticed that one of the men from Vision had donned an orange vest and some gloves and decided to help with the clean up. It may not have been his group, but obviously it was his world that needed cleaning up and he was stepping up. Another powerful message.

Just as a photographer sometimes needs to step back to gain a better perspective for his photo, we also need to step back from time to time from our problems, our families, our jobs and even our circumstances to get a better perspective. We need to keep our focus on Jesus….. We may not see these little miracles on the six o’clock news but they are happening around us every day. All under the watchful eyes of Jesus. –SHARON MOYER
