Haircuts: too emo or not too emo?

I've had some interesting comments back up in the moderation queue lately for this blog. Aside from the positive feedback, there's a number of comments that basically say:

"You're crazy, emo isn't <x> it's <y>".

The funny thing is for just about every person who thinks that "emo" is a type of musical genre, there is another person who think that's bullshit, and "emo" is really about being depressed, sad and dressing and clothing yourself appropriately.

What does this have to do with emo haircuts? I'm glad you asked.

If I've learned anything with this blog, it's that emo haircuts are either exactly like the examples on this blog

OR

I've got myself confused and we're really talking about "scene kids".

Frankly, who gives a shit? Why people get so hung up on what to call a person with bright pink hair or black clothes is beyond me.

5 Hair Dye Tips for a Great Emo Haircut

If you're considering dying your own hair, we've got some important tips for you. Chances are that if you've ever considered a do-it-yourself emo haircut you'll have at least considered dying your hair on your own. For a start, it's cheaper than having someone else do it for you, and you don't have a lot of spare cash, right?

It's either that or run the risk of orange hair. Hey, maybe you can work with it anyhow, but take my word for it on this one.

Tip #2: If you do screw it up, don't try to fix it yourself.

If you really screw up, don't be tempted to "fix" it. Again, seek the guidance of a professional.

Or, you could do a Britney and shave the lot. Always a good look, especially on a female.

Tip #3: Do an Allergy test first.

Before you dye your hair, ensure that you're not going to react to the dye. Many hair dyes contain harsh chemicals that can react badly with your skin.

Did you want bright red skin to go with your bright red emo hairstyle?

Tip #4: Do a strand test second.

Before you start applying dye, you want to make sure that the result you'll get is what you're expecting. This means you need to take a strand of hair and apply a small amount of dye to it, leave it on for as long as you're planning to leave the dye when you do the main job, and see what happens.

Emo haircuts can be any color you like, but you'll probably want to minimize surprises.

Finally, Tip #5: Read the directions!

Many a botched dye job could have been avoided by reading the directions on the package. To be sure, read it twice. Don't assume that you know better than the manufacturer.

Almost as important is reading the directions is to actually follow the directions!. Do that, and you probably end up with a great, home-brewed emo haircut that's the envy of all your friends...

I've said it before, I never cease to be amazed at the level of hatred or ridicule that can be directed at someone simply because they look emo, or have an emo haircut that's a little unusual. Isn't it sad when your personal style, taste in music or even the people you hang out with can cause you to be the target of so much direct anger?

If you "hate" emo, you've only got to look around youtube for a moment to find stuff like this:

You can be pretty sure that when someone goes to the time and effort to put together a video about how much they hate emo hairstyles, what they're really saying is this:

"Hey, I don't have any way to express myself that I'm comfortable with, and it's a hell of a lot easier to hate someone who does than step outside my own comfort zone and be myself"

It's an awful lot easier to tear something down than to face our own insecurities. Celebrate your personal style. You are not your haircut.

Emo haircuts - there's just no substitute for them. Love 'em or hate 'em, you have to agree that when you think about emo hair you'll have one of two reactions.

Today's tip comes from our fabulous resident hairdresser, Simone D.

A lot of people think that emo haircuts are just "black with bangs and dye". While this might be true for the unimaginative, emo haircuts can be the ultimate self-expression.

The great thing about emo haircuts is just how much fun they can be. You can have all sorts of variations on the same theme and still look unique and standout. All it takes is a little imagination and some practice.

Like it or not, your haircut is one of the first things people will notice about you, so you want it to stand out for all the right reasons. There's nothing worse than a bad hair day that goes on for weeks or months Trying to grow out a mistake is time-consuming and often embarasing!

Unless you've got a great deal of creative flair, the best advice is to start small. Make changes slowly. Do your research.

If you're going to dye your hair you need to know how your particular hair type and color is likely to react to the dye. You may be allergic to certain brands of dye and not others. Some dyes will wash out quickly, some will last longer. It's important that you know what to expect. Dying your hair is messy, and if you're not careful it's easy to screw it up. If you're doing it yourself it's probably a good idea to have someone around to help.

The same goes for cutting your hair. It's difficult if not impossible to cut your own hair well. You should already have an idea of how your particular hair type will react to being cut. Certain types of haircut that look great on someone with thick, straight hair may simply not work on someone with thin, curly hair.

Make sure you have plenty of time and a clear idea of what you are trying to achieve before you start. Don't hack away at your hair unless you have some idea of what you are doing!

Californication, emo hair cuts and Slayer

"Emo" is fast becoming one of the most widely misunderstood, misused and abused words in popular media today. Like "emo hair cuts" - a descriptive term that can reference hairstyles that don't strictly belong to the emo subculture - you can be forgiven for being a little confused about emo, emo haircuts and the emo music scene.

So what does all this have to do with the Showtime series, Californication? As it happens, quite a bit.

Did you notice Hank's daughter, Becca, lying on her bed listening to Death Cab for Cutie? Becca is the stereotypical emo kid. She wears black, has black unusually styled hair, she likes write poetry and songs lyrics, and she plays guitar and sings in her own band. She's what people are thinking when you hear that irritating catchphrase: cheer up, emo kid.

Hank's Agent's assistant, Dani is far more interesting. You probably wouldn't consider her to be emo at all, yet you'd probably find hairstyles like hers on a dozen emo websites. If you looked closely at Dani you probably noticed the "SG" tattoo on her arm. The tattoo is the logo of the suicide girls website. SG is a real website with a huge gallery of girls that look like Dani: Girls with great hair, interesting tattoos and even more interesting piercings. Even more surprising than such a direct reference to SG on Californication is the fact that Dani actually has her own profile page on their website. Go see if you can find it :)

So what's my point? Well compare Becca and Dani. Very different people with very different looks, but both could be considered to have emo hair cuts if you go by what you see online. Sure, Dani is into BDSM - perhaps she even likes the concept of having pain inflicted on her - but emo? Not in the strictest definition of the word.

The thing is the meaning of emo is changing. Plenty of people get upset about that, but it's a pointless argument. Emo, and emo hair cuts are what people say they are. There's no point getting bent out of shape about it all. Just enjoy the pictures and do what you want with your hairstyle :)

Since we're talking about Californication, here's some Californication trivia for you:

All three of Hank Moody's novels, South of Heaven, Seasons in the Abyss and (my personal favorite) God Hates Us All are titles of Slayer albums.
Dani's profile on Suicidegirls.com names her as "DaniCA", or "Dani California". This is the title of the first track on Stadium Arcadium, an album by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. They also have an album called Californication.

Sucker 4 cute girls with emo hair cuts?

I've been doing quite a bit of in-depth research into emo hair cuts - and I've gotta tell you that that the best emo hair cuts out there are found on the girls.

Yep, there can be no doubt about it. Just look at any emo website and you'll find hundreds pictures of cute emo girls in their bedrooms and bathrooms - one arm outstretched - in the obligatory "check out my emo hair cut" self-portrait.

OK, sure. There's pictures of guys as well, but think about this - who wants to see what a guy does in his bedroom or bathroom? Creepy, right? I don't care how good his self-photographed emo haircut is, I don't want to be thinking about what he does in his bedroom when he's not spending time on his hair!

Girls on the other hand, are a totally different matter. While you're admiring her emo hair cut you're getting a glimpse into something else as well. You can just imagine all those lonely young emo boys taking it all in, wishing that they could get a date with a girl like that...

If only they went here, they just might...

Yep, no doubt about it - Emo hair cuts are an artform in themselves. Tasteful yet provocative. Especially on cute emo girls like my top four for today :)

I'm sure I'm not the only one who looks at some people and wonder to myself "how on earth did do that to their hair?". Out of curiosity I did some poking around on the 'net in search of a how-to guide for emo hair cuts. The first think I noticed is that people are full of shit. The majority of the information I found could loosely be lumped into one or the other of the following categories:

Pages written by adults who have no idea what the hell they're talking about
Pages written by kids who do know what they're talking about, but who are shall we say, a little inarticulate.

Then I found youtube. Here's one way to do it :)

Emo hair cuts are not mullets!

I've read a lot of stuff lately spouting garbage statements like this:

"...emo hair cuts are the new mullet..."

I suppose that what they mean is that in 10 years or so we'll be looking back at the whole emo phenomenon with a gasp of horror and cry "Oh my god! what were we thinking?"

I think to be fair I think that whole "emohair is the new mullet" garbage is the work of journalists trying to bump up page imprints with a few provocative phrases. It wouldn't be the first time, right? If you stop to think about it, all major fashion trends cause us to shiver with embarrassment a decade or so later.

If you want to be cutting edge, you have to be prepared for the inevitable remorse that comes years later. In the 80's, it was acid wash, mullets, big hair and tight jeans. Guess what - back in the 80's few people thought twice about it. People who dressed like that were the target of harassment from some members of society back then, sure. So what? It didn't stop Billy Ray Cyrus or Michael Bolton (unfortunately!).

If emo hair cuts are going to be what sets the early 2000's apart from the decades before it, then you might as well have fun with it, I say. I found a website called "F**k the mainstream" the other day (great domain name, IMHO) and they have all sorts of neat stuff.

If you're going to have a photo album full of cringe-worthy pictures of yourself, you might as well take the plunge and do it properly.

Emo hair cuts - madness or method?

I love emo. Really. I love anything that makes me stop and think about the world around me, and you'd better believe that an emo hair cut is one of those things. You'd never know it, but despite the fact that I'm not a teenager any more, I can actually identify with the whole emo culture. I get it. That's not to say I necessarily embrace it, but I get it.

I get the emo kids, I get the emo hair cuts. I get that emo isn't all about sitting in the dark, crying to MCR and slashing at your wrists. I get that from the perspective of the teenager sitting opposite me on the train with spiked black hair and lip piercings, my opinions of his look are both something he could care less about, while at the same time he's earnestly hoping his look has the desired effect on his fellow passengers. I love the dichotomy.

Emo hair cuts, it has to be said, are the hallmark of the emo look and there's nothing like someone with brightly colored hair, interesting piercings and perhaps even the odd tattoo to make people stop and look twice.

Emo - the new black?

I've been in a lot of schools lately, and emo is taking on a life of its own. Unfortunately there's a whole bunch of kids out there with no idea about basic hair care, or how to create a the look they're after. I know from bitter, embarrassing experience just how humiliating it can be trying achieve a look that demonstrates your attachment to a youth subculture and fail miserably. In my day the look was all about tight jeans and ... well let's just leave it at that and move on.

Emo hair cuts - love them or hate them, you have to admire their ability to polarise opinion. Especially among kids. People have been beaten up because of their haircut. Is that insane, or what?

So if you're going for the emo look, at least you should do it with some style. For mine, emo is about self-expression. If you're trying hard to be emo, forget it. Self expression isn't about fitting in by doing what everyone else is doing.

Great emo hair cuts are often the result of experimentation, and it can be difficult to work out how to best create the bold, stand out designs which are the hallmark of the emo look. It doesn't help that there's a total lack of style guides; look around, there really is no one single definitive "emo hair cut".

To make matters worse, having anything resembling an emo hair cut can make the wearer the target of ridicule and harrassment. There are websites dedicated entirely to the passtime. You certainly don't want to start out with a bad haircut and make #1 on something like that!

So in an attempt to save you some hassles, here's a few tips that spring to mind:

(Almost) Anything Goes.

While it's true that there are some things that will make your haircut "emo" or "not emo", outside of a few loose rules, you're free to try whatever you like. The best bet here is to experiment. Take out some scissors perhaps a razor, and some hair dye and see what happens. If you're in touch with your creativity and emotions, you'll almost guarantee a great look.
Good dyes can make or break your haircut.

(Mostly). Again, this isn't strictly true. If you botch your dye job it's not necessarily cause for alarm. Some of the most interesting emo hair cuts consist of some - shall we say - less than perfect efforts. It really depends whether you're working with a disheveled appearance or not. If the rest of your look is smart and tidy, then you'll want to get the dye job right. There's some great dyes on the market to help you here. Don't just grab any old thing!
Roll your own...

A great work of art almost creates itself as an extension of the artist - an emo hair cut is an extension of the person wearing it. Individuality is key. You can't copy the haircut you saw on the train this morning if you expect to truly stand apart from the crowd.
...but don't do your own!

By all means take an active part in the development of your hair cut. Don't try to do it alone, have a friend help. With the possible exception of shaving or using clippers, it is very difficult to do anything sensible to the back of your head. Never mind that everything is reversed when you're using a mirror, unless you're very talented and spatially aware it's a recipe for disaster.
