Motorola has launched two new rugged mobile computers, both supporting CDMA as well as GSM wireless technologies. It now offers three handheld computers offering this dual combination. Thus these devices can handle all the U.S. carrier networks.
The ES400 was the first dual CDMA-GSM handheld to be launched in june,’10. Next came the MC65 with the same size and connectivity convenience but more rugged in design to be able to handle drops and damage risks more than the others in its category. It is priced at $2295. The other handheld to be launched with the MC65 is the dynamic MC959B, which is not as small and slim to fit into a pocket, but rugged enough.
The ES400 is rated as durable, the mC65 as the crossover model from the consumer grade smart phone for management professionals requiring longer lasting handheld devices. The MC959B is meant for fields like shipping and logistics where a traditional device which is more rugged becomes a necessity.
Motorola explains its launch of these three smart phones in quick succession with the finding that enterprise customers need smart phones that last three to five years which most popular consumer smart phones do not last for. The new handheld computers make perfect sense in terms of costs incurred, the returns on investment and the functional efficiency they offer to enterprise managers. They meet the fast increasing demand for WAN enabled field technology which is also mobile.
The MC65 scores over the Intermec CS40 with its dual band wireless connectivity which makes it operational in both CDMA and GSM environments. The CS40 can support only UMTS that has been built upon the GSM radio concepts. Though both have Bluetooth connectivity and are Wi-Fi ready, the CS40 offers 802.11b/g support while the MC65 has 802.11a/b/g support. Other common features between the two include barcode scanners, camera with a resolution of 3.2 mega pixels, though the CS40 has a 2.8 inch touch screen compared to the mC65 sporting a larger 3.5 inch one. The MC65 is twice as heavy than the CS40 due to its battery and only an inch longer.
The MC959B comes with the Qualcomm Gobi chip and can therefore support both CDMA and GSM, becoming the first mobile computer to do so since other devices have separate radios for each band. Each of the three Motorola offerings are likely to have high demand in the coming months.

The biggest beneficiary is the professional looking for reliability, wanting to minimize his downtime, save time and money, and wants something that continues to work flawlessly despite multiple drops to concrete.

The CS40 has been made for tougher environment with a versatile range of functions because it has to work for results that are beyond the scope of smart phones, which are sufficient for music and social networking.
The CS40 also cements a strategic alliance with the Microsoft Corporation. Elaborating on the partnership, Kevin Dallas, general manager of the Windows Embedded Business Unit at Microsoft, said, “Our collaboration with Intermec is another example of Microsoft’s continued commitment to meeting the demands of modern enterprises with innovative, high performance and connected enterprise handheld computer. Powered by Windows Embedded Handheld, based on Windows Mobile 6.5 technologies, the Intermec CS40 offers business professionals the ability to capture, access and act on business critical information where and when they need it.”

Field work personnel need tough and damage free mobile devices that are well protected against breaking and damages. The CS40 offers just this and is well protected on all corners and its sides. Its IP54 rated sealing guarantees that it is sealed against moisture and dust. Its ability to scan 1D and 2D barcodes, a 3 mega pixel camera and 3.75G voice and data communications combine to make it the best handset for the man on the move. It gains additionally from its compatibility with all Intermec printers, SmartSystems, peripherals and accessories. Finally, Intermec’s INcontrol managed services offer easily accessible CS40 support.

The CS40 will be available for purchase in the fourth quarter of 2010 through all Intermec PartnerNet members.

Microsoft will release new mobile Operating system based on Windows Mobile 6.5 for enterprise devices soon. This will be followed by Windows Phone 7, which will be released in 2011. The chief executive of Microsoft Steve Ballmer announced that a new Motorola enterprise Smartphone will be launched quickly. He also said that they will release a new Operating System called Windows Embedded Handheld after July 2011. The new handheld device will be based on Windows Mobile 6.5 technologies. A version of Windows embedded handheld based on Windows Phone 7 technology will also be released.

Microsoft will work for enterprises to transfer their line of business applications to its new application platform for Windows Phone 7 in the meantime. Ballmer made these announcements at the launch of the Motorola ES400, a handheld designed especially for business on the basis of Windows Mobile 6.5.3 technology. They will be sold through the enterprise channels of Sprint. Gene Delaney, the President of Motorola’s enterprise mobile solutions insists that it is crucial for all corporate IT managers to know about the future plans of the Microsoft.

Motorola’s ES400 meets the specific requirements of large businesses. The EDA devices provided by Motorola are produced by a more special part of the business than the consumer phones. The consumer Motorola has gone with the Operating System of Google’s Android, whereas the enterprise unit remains to be committed to Microsoft Operating Systems. Motorola’s Chief executive Greg Brown said that the company look forward the ways to give a new Microsoft mobile OS to the next generation. It continues to be the esteemed partner of Microsoft and helps it to evolve the latter’s platform strategy. Ballmer expresses his confidence that the company will maintain an ongoing partnership with Motorola.

The cost of EDA per unit is little bit more, but they are very strong and packed with enterprise friendly features like line of business applications and IT manageability. For instance, the camera on the ES400 is located in the middle of the back. It includes a red LED, which allows you to focus it for scanning. It has a dedicated button that activates a barcode scanner effortlessly. The average consumer handheld does not have such features

The ES400 has an enterprise user interface, which is a gripping version of Windows Mobile 6.5.3. The home screen of ES400 reverberate Windows Phone 7 with some features. Its live icons in a bold, colored grid show alerts and messages in a Windows Phone 7 type font. You will find a main application menu organized into a large grid and Windows Mobile 6.5.

Though ES400 looks like a consumer producer, it has various excellent features. Its ruggedness and security would exceed your expectations for an enterprise type product. It runs on an ARM11 processor on 600 MHz’s. The ES400 provides excellent support to CDMA EVDO of Sprint, HSPA of GSM and Wi-Fi 802.1. It supports the extraordinary high speed Wi-Fi variant, which is used by some large businesses. Every part of this product, including its keyboard is strong and this makes it possible to prevent failure rates. This in turn saves nearly $500 per device for companies over three years. The device also has a fingerprint reader on its back.

The three-inch touch screen of this phone featuring 640 by 480 pixels uses the Pentile arrangement. It features an additional dedicated white pixel that uses less sub pixels, so that you can get best visual resolutions as opposed to normal RGB displays. It provides better brightness and reduced power usage.

Sprint and Motorola proclaim that the ES400 will be launched at the second half of this year. AS EDA devices are normally sold through large volume deals, price may vary according to the number of units ordered and the level of existing business relationships.

Socket Mobile Inc is an innovative supplier of mobile productivity and network connection solutions in Newark city, California. It announced that it has expanded barcode scanner compatibility with Blackberry Smart phones, which include the Curve, Tour, Bold, Pearl and Storm. The Blackberry users can add high volume barcode scanning capabilities effortlessly to their Smartphones.

Industrial-class barcode scanning brought by the CHS Series is available in 1D and 2D scanning option. It is offered in lightweight, pocket size form, for the convenience of the users. It comes with either standard casing or antimicrobial casing. The latter one protects your device against the infestation of harmful bacteria and microbes. This is therefore a great option in the healthcare and hospitality industries.

Socket Mobile provides SocketScan software for free and it allows the CHS to attach to any Blackberry Smartphone through Bluetooth. You can therefore easily integrate it, no matter whether you belong to an IT team or an individual user.

Healthcare industry is the most important area where there are plenty of opportunities to use barcode scanning applications on Smartphones. Manhattan Research provides a report that specifies 64% of health care professionals use Smartphones and this number is estimated to grow by 17% by 2012. The data collection product manager at Socket Mobile Samantha Chu confirms this estimation. The most important barcode scanning applications in health care industry include medication administration, inventory management, patient identification, asset management and documentation.

Samantha Chu said that providing a single device to physicians to accomplish more tasks easily and quickly can help them to be more effective in providing sufficient care to their patients. Blackberry is the best Smartphone choice for health care professionals as well as home care providers today. The CHS series allows them to work seamlessly. They can integrate 1D and 2D barcode scanning capabilities effectively and economically into one device, which they are using already on a regular basis.

RIM demonstrated the CHS and Blackberry live from July 12 to 16, 2010 at the ESRI International User Conference in San Diego at the San Diego Convention Center. It also participated in the live demonstration at the Syclo Mobile Conference in Chicago on July 14-16.

Socketscan software is available at present for all the 1D versions of the Socket Bluetooth CHS. It will also be made available for all 2D versions, including 7X, 7XRx by the final quarter of 2010.

In the early 1930s once a month shopkeepers used to count all the stocks manually and then used to order further. Everything was a written as well as manual procedure. Counting of all the bags, packets and products and writing it down is definitely a very tedious project. Very often the number used to be wrong and the shopkeepers used to give number which is approximate. This cannot be considered as a correct system as it was based on the judgement of the shopkeeper. As a result there was of course heavy demand for an alternate program. In 1932, a Harvard University business student, Wallace Flint came with a program where a client can pick up the required product from a product catalogue which has hole punched cards next to them. After punching they used to tear the cards and take it with them. This card could be inserted into an engineered reader machine and then they used to get items through conveyer belt system.

This system was not foolproof. All the equipments used for it were very expensive and difficult to use. This did not work as no retailer could afford this instrument and as a result people went back to their original method. Again in 1948 there was some action which introduced barcodes.

There was a heavy demand from the head of the food companies for some automatic readings of the product information. Drexel Institute of Technologies started working on this project under the guidance of their dean. Norman Joseph Woodland and Bernard Silver who were two graduates from the Drexel University were working on labelling and prototype codes.
The main difficulty while working on this project was expensive material, total cost of the project as well as the installation of the equipment at the user end. During 1940 to 1970 many formats of the barcode came into the market with many different codes. In 1973 standard codes had been selected and named as UPC. The implementation of it was quite fast and this barcode was very popular amongst the retail shops.

Today label printing has been improved a lot and can take help from computer. This has made bar codes very easy for the retails shops. Many industrial and military applications started using this bar code. Many more companies came forward for improvement in bar coding. Maybe in future some other technology can be used which is easier than bar codes but today barcodes is the most convenient technology for the shop keepers.
