Women’s Health Trip Lecture 9/14

The 2011 Emory Medishare Women’s Health Trip is giving a lecture at this week’s Family Planning Series for the Department of OB/GYN at Grady.

The lecture will be happening on Wednesday, September 14th from 12:15 pm to 1:00 pm in FOB 103 at Grady Hospital for all or anyone who is interested in attending.

The 2011 Women’s Health Trip focused its efforts on reproductive health training and helping to promote family planning during their time in Haiti. Several of the students who attended received credit toward their OB/GYN rotation for their efforts and their investment in the betterment of women’s health in Haiti.

2011 Emory Medishare Surgery Trip

The 2011 Emory Medishare Surgery trip was a huge success. Over the course of five and a half days, our team performed life altering operations on 30 patients. Thanks to Project Medishare’s organization and radio announcements, our patients were able to travel from all across Haiti to receive surgical care. Hernias were repaired. Prostates and other masses were removed. Two lives were saved; one from the clutches of sepsis and the other from a traumatic machete injury to the arm.

In addition to bringing specialized surgical care to the undeserved of the Haitian Central Plateau, we gained invaluable hands-on training in the operating rooms and on the wards. Every Emory student provided stellar patient care, taking great pride in the difference they were making in their patient’s lives. The amount of learning crammed into that one week undoubtedly has had a profound impact on everyone that participated in the trip. Our lessons came courtesy of our fantastic patients, dedicated faculty and extremely hard working nurses. Most of all, the second and third year medical students, working together, taught one another constantly throughout the week. A strong core of underclassmen are already stepping up to lead next year’s trip. In 2012, Emory Medishare will continue to make strides toward providing specialized surgical care in the central plateau.

Medical Trip 2011

The Emory group returned home from Haiti after their seven-day Medical trip. The trip consisted of setting up mobile medical clinics throughout the Central Plateau of Haiti. The team consisted of 10 students, 4 physicians, and 4 interpreters. They were able to successfully treat hundreds of patients. Below are some student quotes about the experience and pictures from the trip:

“The “life changing” patients — the ones that have decompensated heart failure, glomerulonephritis, severe infection, early stage dementia, failure to thrive, or AIDS — that maybe 1-5% we see, we can help them. We might not be able to be the hospitalist administering their care, but we can make sure they get that referral, that money, that transportation to get to a hospital and get taken care of. In April 2011, two 1st year Medical students and six 3rd year Medical students traveled to Haiti with 2 physicians to work in the clinic in Haiti’s Central Plateau with a focusing on Obstetrical and Gynecological care. They provided family planning care, gynecological care, and rural primary care. Beyond giving basic medical care the students and physicians worked with Medishare Community Health Workers to educate them on the signs and symptoms of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia in pregnancy. Below are a few pictures documenting the team and their work. Enjoy!

This trip was made possible by the fundraising efforts of the students so thank you to hard work of the students and all of their donors for contributing to the cause!

Our exhibit table number is G-11. Our exhibit is being run by current M1, M2, and M3 students who participate in the amazing opportunities Emory Medishare has to offer and are a wealth of knowledge about the organization. The times we will be at our exhibit table are as follows:

Friday April 1st – 6:30 – 10:00 pm

Saturday April 2nd – 10:30 am – 12:00 pm & 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm

Sunday April 3rd – 12:00pm – 1:00 pm

Surgery Elective Described in World J Surg

Over the last three years, Emory Medishare has worked closely with Emory University’s Department of Surgery to develop a for-credit surgery elective for rotating 3rd year students. This program that integrates international field experience into a highly regimented required clinical clerkship is almost unprecedented in U.S. medical education. The curriculum design was recently reported in the most recent issue of the World Journal of Surgery. You can find the PubMed abstract and link to your institution’s article access here.

The efforts of Emory Medishare were recently acknowledged by Erin Levin from the VirginiaHighland-DruidHill Patch. Sarah Rae Strunk, one of the members and a pivitol researcher on Emory Medishare’s team, was featured along with many other members on their feelings about helping Haiti and what it means to them! All great news!

The article chronicled the experiences of the Medical students that traveled to Haiti during the summer on the Medical and Surgery trips.
