Your official birthstone is not only beautiful, it’s full of history and mythology. Here are some interesting facts about your birthstone, the aquamarine.

In addition to being the birthstone for March and the Zodiac sign of Pisces, aquamarine is also the gemstone used to celebrate a 19th wedding anniversary.

The aquamarine is a transparent pale blue variety of beryl (beryllium aluminum silicate) — the same mineral family that emeralds belong to.

Aquamarines are said to resemble the beautiful blue green of ocean water. The word aquamarine is derived from the Latin phrase "aqua marinus," meaning "water of the sea."

Aquamarines come in a wide range of shades and colors, from pale pastel, sky blue to blue-green to sea-green. The rarest and most valuable aquamarines are those with a deep blue color.

The color of aquamarine is due to trace amounts of iron that work their way inside the crystal. Most commercially sold aquamarines are heat treated to produce a more desirable blue-green color.

Aquamarines have a hexagonal-shaped crystal system. They are pleochroic in nature, meaning the gem exhibits two colors (blue and white) depending on the angle from which it is viewed.

Like many gems, aquamarines are said to have metaphysical powers, including the
ability to clear and cleanse, refreshing and uplifting, They also promote courage, calm, compassion, tolerance, love, communication, self expression, reasoning, intellect and connection to one’s higher self.

Aquamarines are also said to aid in the healing of sore throats, swollen glands, calming nerves, improving vision, and cooling sunburns and fevers.

The ancient Romans believed that Neptune, the god of the sea, obtained aquamarines from the jewel boxes of the Sirens. Legend has it that Neptune gave aquamarines as a gift to the mermaids.

Because of its bond with the sea, aquamarine is the gemstone of several sea goddesses, including Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love.

Aquamarines are also said to bring safety to sailors, who are known to wear aquamarine
talismans engraved with the likeness of Neptune, as protection against dangers at sea.

Aquamarines are mined in exotic, faraway places, including Nigeria, Madagascar, Zambia, Pakistan and Mozambique, but most modern aquamarines come from Brazil.

One of the largest aquamarines ever mined weighed 110.5 kg. It was found in 1910 in Marambaia/Minas Gerais, Brazil.

In the United States, the only location where you can mine for aquamarines is Mount Antero in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. The elusive gem is said to be found at altitudes of 14,000 feet or more!

February’s Birthstone: Amethyst

Happy birthday to all of you born in February! Here are 16 facts about February’s official gemstone, the amethyst.

In addition to being the official birthstone for February, amethyst is also the birthstone for the zodiac sign of Pisces and the gemstone for the 6th anniversary of marriage.

Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz, occurring naturally as crystals within rocks.

Amethysts are the most valued member of the quartz family, considered a semiprecious gem for its violet color.

A quartz must be purple to be amethyst, but can range in shade from light lilac to deep purple.

Heating amethyst removes the color or changes it to the yellow of citrine. Today, most citrine is made in this manner.

The word amethyst comes from the Greek word "amethystos," meaning sober.

Throughout history, amethyst has been used to protect against drunkenness and to help overcome addiction. Today, amethyst is considered to be a symbol of calm and tranquility, and a stabilizing force for those struggling to overcome addictive behaviors.

A gift of amethyst is a symbol of protection, said to strengthen the bonds of love and overcome difficulty.

Amethyst was associated with Dionysus, the Greek god of wine. In ancient Greece, people believed wine served in amethyst goblets would protect against drunkenness.

According to Greek mythology, Amethyst was a young virgin who angered the Greek god, Dionysus, after he became drunk from red wine. When Amethyst called the Goddess Diana for help, Diana turned Amethyst into a white quartz. When Dionysus felt remorse, he cried, dripping his tears into his goblet of red wine. When the goblet overturned, the red wine spilled on the white quartz, coloring it purple—the color of amethyst.

Amethysts were once considered more valuable than diamonds, until deposits were found, increasing the quantity and lowering the value.

Amethyst deposits have been found in Canada, Australia, India, Madagascar, Namibia, Russia, Sri Lanka and in the United States. Today, most amethyst comes from Brazil and Uruguay.

Amethyst is the official state gemstone of South Carolina, after world-class amethysts were found at the Ellis-Jones Mine near Due West, SC on June 24, 1969. The South Carolina amethysts are presently on display at the American Museum of Natural History and the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History.

In August 2011, the world’s largest amethyst, called the “Empress of Uruguay,” was vandalized by a tourist while the 2.5 ton geode was on display in Queensland, Australia.

Known as “the royal beauty,” amethyst has been associated with royalty throughout the ages, in part because of its royal purple color. A large amethyst is among the closely-guarded gemstones in the British Crown Jewels, and it is said that amethyst was a favorite of Queen Catherine the Great of Russia.

Amethyst also has much religious history and symbolism. In the Bible, it was one of the 12 stones that adorned the high priest Aaron’s breastplate in Exodus 39. As a symbol of spirituality and piety, amethyst has also been used to decorate churches and crosses, and worn in rings and on rosaries by religious clergy.

<georss:box>40.723198000000004 -73.5499991 40.726206 -73.5450641</georss:box>

January’s Birthstone: Garnet

To help celebrate, here are some fun and interesting facts and myths about your very own birthstone, the garnet.

The name for garnet derives from the Latin word granatus, meaning grain. This is a likely reference to the pomegranate fruit which has seeds of a similar shape, size and color to some garnet stones.

Garnet is not a single mineral, but a broad group of minerals. On the Moh's hardness scale, garnet is usually 6.5 to 7.5.

Garnets are known for their deep red color, but they also come in a variety of other colors including green, orange, brown, yellow, and earth tones such as cinnamon. This diversity of color is due to the combinations of elements within each particular gem, such as iron, calcium and manganese.

Garnets are associated with love, devotion, honor and loyalty. A garnet given as a gift is said to grant loyalty and affection upon the bestowed.

Garnets are very abrasive and are used commercially for grinding and polishing. There is such a thing as garnet-coated sandpaper.

Garnets are thought to have healing powers, specifically for heart-related ailments. Garnets are believed to help cardiovascular problems by regulating internal rhythms and normalizing blood pressure.

From a metaphysical perspective, garnets are said to awaken the “heart center,” and can purify and cleanse the body, remove toxins, and revitalize the spirit.

Because garnets are believed to protect against injury and death, soldiers and sailors throughout the ages have carried garnets into battle. Garnets are also thought to offer protection against injury or death.

In the Bible, it is believed that Noah affixed a garnet carbuncle on the mast of his Ark to light his way through the dark and stormy nights of God's wrath.

The first garnets were mined in Sri Lanka more than 2,500 years ago. They are commonly found in India, South Africa, Brazil, Canada, Hungary and Austria. In the United States, garnets are mined in Arizona and Idaho.

The almandine garnet is the official state mineral of Connecticut, and was declared so by the state’s General Assembly in 1977.

Bohemia, now located in the Czech Republic, was an early source of quality garnets and is one of the few places in the world where pyrope garnetsare found.

Although the Magic Garnet Museum in Prague, Czech Republic, closed in 2008, you can still virtually visit their large collection of historical and contemporary garnet jewelry online.

December Gemstones: Turquoise, Tanzanite and Zircon

Happy birthday to those born in December! While most months have only one special birthstone, December babies have three to choose from. According to the American Gem Society, the three birthstones for December are tanzanite, zircon and the ever-popular turquoise. Here are some interesting facts you may not know about December’s birthstones:

Turquoise

Turquoise, which derives from an old French word meaning Turkish, is also known as hydrated copper aluminum phosphate. The blue-green mineral is found in deposits around the world and has been valued by many ancient civilizations. While no one knows exactly when this captivating gemstone was first discovered, the ancient Egyptians are credited with its earliest use and mines on the Sinai Peninsula. Believing turquoise had magical powers, the early Egyptians commonly used the greenish blue gem in jewelry, art, ornaments and statues. Four famous turquoise bracelets were found on the mummified arm of Queen Zar—the second ruler of the Egypt’s First Dynasty—dating back to around 5500 B.C.

Today, the finest turquoise is said to come from Iran, but high-grade gems are also mined in the southwestern United States, such as Arizona and New Mexico. Native Americans consider the stone sacred, and shamans use turquoise in rituals to promote spiritual and mental clarity. Turquoise is also said to enhance a person’s trust, kindness understanding and wisdom.

Tanzanite

Discovered in Tanzania, East Africa in 1967 by Portuguese prospector Manuel d'Souza (while mining for sapphire), tanzanite quickly took the gem world by storm due to its vivid blue to violet color. Originally known as blue zoisite, the mineral was re-named tanzanite by Henry Platt, Vice President of Tiffany & Co. Platt saw the potential of tanzanite to be a less-expensive alternative to sapphire, and his enthusiasm led to a contract with Tiffany to purchase and market tanzanite in the United States.

Another early fan of tanzanite was Dr. Paul Desautels, then Assistant Curator of the Smithsonian Institution. Desautels had not seen blue zoisite (aka tanzanite) before, and quickly acquired it for the Smithsonian’s mineral collection. In October 2002, the American Gem Trade Association added tanzanite to its official birthstone list as a December birthstone. Wearers of tanzanite should know that it is a delicate gemstone, and it should not be knocked or subjected to extreme temperature changes.

Zircon

Zircon is a mineral, technically known as zirconium silicate and is primarily mined in Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam. The name zircon is believed to be derived from "zarqun," the Persian word for golden colored. Zircon comes in a variety of colors, but some of the most popular are red, blue or colorless. Usually found in browns and greens, blue and colorless zircons are rare in nature, and are usually heat-treated to meet the demand of the market.

In the Middle Ages, zircons were believed to have many powers, including the ability to relieve pain, induce hunger, protect travelers from disease and injury, ensure a warm welcome and promote restful sleep.

In modern times, colorless zircons have been used to imitate diamonds, but should not be confused with the now popular cubic zirconia, or zirconium oxyde, which is a laboratory grown material. Zircon is a hard gem, but wearers of zircon jewelry should be aware that facets can abrade and chip.

November Gemstones: Citrine and Topaz

Topaz

There is some debate over the official birthstone for November. Is it yellow topaz or citrine? While the Ayurvedic birthstone list only includes topaz, the widely held Jewelers of America list considers both citrine and yellow topaz as official November birthstones. Whichever gem you prefer, here are 15 fascinating facts about both citrine and topaz.

Citrines — amazing!

Citrines are quartz crystals yellow or orange in color and commonly found in igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks.

The word citrine comes from the French word, citron, which means lemon.

In ancient times, citrine was worn as protection against bad skin, evil thoughts, snakebites and even the plague. It is also said to give its wearer a sense of balance and well-being.

A gift of citrine symbolizes strength and hope.

In addition to being the birthstone for November and zodiac sign of Scorpio, citrine jewelry is given for the 13th and 17th wedding anniversaries.

Citrine is the sister stone to purple quartz, Amethyst. Some believe citrine started out as amethyst, but the heat from molten rock changed it to yellow quartz.

November’s alternate birthstone, yellow topaz, is usually gold in color, but can range from a peach color to a deep cognac.

Some people believe topaz comes from the Sanskrit word topas, meaning fire.

Topaz is one of the hardest minerals found in nature and is known as the “stone of strength.”

Topaz is made from aluminum oxide and silicon dioxide, and is usually mined in gravel deposits, streams and various rivers. The presence of fluorine is a strong indicator that topaz will be found.

Topaz comes in a variety of colors including brown, red, orange, pink, yellow, as well as colorless. When topaz has red or pink overtones, it is known as Imperial topaz and can be very rare and expensive.

Light colored or colorless topaz gemstones are sometimes used as a replacement for diamonds in jewelry.

A gift of yellow topaz symbolizes friendship, strength, wisdom, and courage. Topaz is also believed to ease bad tempers, cure insanity and help insomnia.

Topaz jewelry is given for the 4th, 19th and 23rd wedding anniversaries.

The ancient Egyptians believed yellow topaz’s color came from the glow cast by the sun god, Ra. The ancient Greeks believed topaz could make its wearer invisible.

<georss:box>40.723198000000004 -73.5499991 40.726206 -73.5450641</georss:box>

Gemstone of the Month: The Opal for October

<!-- /* Font Definitions */ @font-face {font-family:Arial; Probably, since you’re a Virgo and known to be detail-oriented. It’s the blue sapphire, one of the most regal of all gemstones. Of course, you don’t have to be born in September to enjoy the deep history and beauty of blue sapphires. The royal stone is worth knowing—and wearing—by any fan of gemstones. Here are 15 more facts about sapphires.

In addition to the birthstone for September, sapphires are also the gemstone for 45th wedding anniversaries.

The blue sapphire is named after the Greek word sapphirus, which means blue.

Blue sapphire is a variety of the mineral called corundum, the same mineral that rubies come from.

Sapphires are second only to diamonds in hardness when compared on the Mohs scale of hardness.

Sapphires come in many colors, but the most valuable and in demand are generally a deep blue.

Some famous sapphires include the Star of India, the Star of Asia, the Logan Sapphire and the Lone Star.

The ancient Greeks believed sapphires were a symbol of wisdom and purity.

Sapphires are also a symbol of truth, sincerity, faithfulness, romantic love and eternal devotion which makes them a popular choice for wedding rings.

The ancient Persians believed the Earth was supported by a giant sapphire and its reflection gave the sky its blue hue. The Persions also believed the blue sapphire to be a magical talisman capable of healing.

According to Jewish midrash, Moses was given the Ten Commandments on tablets of sapphire that were carved from the throne of God, making them the most precious gemstone.

In the Bible, Exodus chapter 24 reads: Then Moses went up, also Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel, and they saw the God of Israel. And there was under his feet … a paved work of sapphire stone, and it was like the very heavens in its clarity.

Sapphire’s rich blue color and meaning has long been associated with royalty, often the gem of choice of kings, emperors and clergy.

The late Diana, Princess of Wales, famously chose a blue sapphire and diamond ring for her engagement to Prince Charles. The decision was criticized because Princess Diana chose the ring out of a high-end English jewelry catalog instead of having a ring custom made.

Princess Diana’s engagement ring enjoyed a huge resurgence in popularity after Prince William proposed to Kate Middleton with his mother’s ring.

During both weddings, reproductions of Princess Diana’s ring became so popular with the public that it became known as “the commoner’s ring.”

Whether your birthday is in August, you're a Libra or you're just a fan of beautiful gemstones, peridot is one of the most beautiful of the precious stones with a rich history and lore worth learning about. Here are 10 more facts, beliefs and metaphysical properties about periodot.

Peridot is the gem variety of the mineral olivine. Its color ranges from yellow-green to lime-green.

In addition to the birthstone for August and the sign of Libra, peridot is also the stone given to celebrate a 16th wedding anniversary.

The ancient Romans called peridot "the evening emerald" because of its deep green color when reflected by lamplight.

Peridot is formed deep in the earth's mantle, as opposed to the earth's crust where most other gems are formed. Peridot forms in magma in the upper mantle and is brought to the surface by volcanic or tectonic activity.

There is debate over the origin of the word peridot. Many believe peridot comes from the French word, peridot, which means gold. Peridot is often mispronounced — its correct pronunciation is per-i-dot.

Peridot is said to have mystical properties, bringing its wearer luck, love, protection against evil and success. Some believe peridot is also useful in calming the nerves and encouraging good sleep.

Peridot has several Biblical references. In the Bible, it is referred to as chrysolite and is said to protect its wearer from wounds. It is also believed that King Solomon gained his wisdom as a result of drinking from a peridot cup. And the second gemstone in Aaron's breastplate was said to be peridot.

Peridot is the national gem of Egypt, where it is referred to as the "gem of the sun."

Ancient papyri document that peridot was mined as early as 1500 B.C. from Topazo Island, now known as St. John's Island in the Egyptian Red Sea.

Some jewel historians believe the emeralds that Cleopatra famously wore were actually peridot gems from Egypt.

# # #

Empire Pawn of Nassau Inc. in East Meadow, NY is the oldest buyer of gold and fine jewelry on Long Island. But how did the tradition of birthstones come about? It happened long before the jewelry industry got involved.

Some religious scholars point to the Book of Exodus in the Old Testament where Aaron—the first high priest of Israel and Moses’ older brother—wore a silver breastplate beset with 12 gemstones representing the 12 tribes of Israel.

The first century Jewish historian, Josephus, was later credited with making the connection between the 12 months of the year, the 12 signs of the zodiac and the 12 gemstones in Aaron’s breastplate.

Fast-forward to 15th century Poland where wearing the gemstone of the month became in vogue. It was believed that wearing a birthstone during its related month would enhance the magical healing properties of that gemstone. To really maximize a gem’s properties, they would own the whole collection and rotate them by month. (Which sounds like a clever jewelry marketing ploy.)

In 1912, the American National Association of Jewelers (Jewelers of America) released its official birthstone list that is still widely used and accepted. That brings us to today and June’s birthstone, the lovely pearl.

10 Pearls of Wisdom

June actually has three official birthstones: pearl, moonstone and Alexandrite.

The pearl is also the birthstone for the Sun Signs Gemini and Cancer.

Alexandrite is named after the Russian tsar, Alexander II, and was the national stone of old Imperial Russia

Pearls are organic gemstones created when a tiny irritant such as sand enters a mollusk’s shell. The mollusk secretes nacre to coat the object. The layers of which become a pearl.

Most people believe pearls were the world’s first precious gem because they arrive perfect out of the shell.

You can tell if a pearl is real by sliding it across your teeth. If it’s gritty, it’s probably real.

Pearls have experienced resurgence in popularity and come in many different colors and shapes.

90% of pearls are cultured, meaning they are made by mollusks under controlled conditions, but are difficult to differentiate from naturally occurring pearls.

Alexandrite is said to strengthen the intuition and imagination of its wearer.

The largest natural pearl was discovered in Patterson, NJ!

How to Sell Your Gems and Fine Jewelry

Need some extra cash? You know, your Aunt Ida’s vintage silver locket, a gold pendant that was a gift from an ex-boyfriend—maybe even an engagement ring you no longer have the desire (or need) to hang on to.

So why haven’t you yet? There are various reasons why people don’t part with their old or unwanted silver and gold jewelry:

Sentimentality: You can’t put a price on emotional attachment

Laziness: You just haven’t gotten around to it yet

Uncertainty: You don’t know how to sell your jewelry or where to go

On the flip side of the coin, there are some good reasons to sell right now. For one, silver is in great demand. A recent study by the Silver Promotion Service, showed that 70 percent of the consumers polled prefer to accessorize with silver jewelry more than gold jewelry because silver is more affordable than gold.

More compelling are the current prices of gold and silver. The past year has seen investors flocking to precious metals to hedge against inflation worries and economic instability. Because of this, many people are realizing that their jewelry must be worth more than ever and are cashing in to help pay their bills. Even a recent New York Times article published in May reported on the new trend of people selling their silver and gold jewelry at pawn shops around the county.

What would you do with the money you make from selling your silver or gold? Pay down debt? Buy a new piece you really want? You may be pleasantly surprised by what your Aunt Ida’s vintage silver locket is actually worth these days.

Keep in mind that the current price of gold and silver is not necessarily what your gold jewelry will be worth. Most gold jewelry pieces are not 24-karat, unless it says so on the piece. Both gold and silver are mixed with alloy metals during the jewelry making process. Before your sell, it is best to educate yourself on what to expect.

The best way to find out what your gold and silver jewelry is worth is to bring to a reputable jeweler and have it appraised. When searching for a good appraiser, do your homework. Ask friends and family who they would recommend, and make sure they are GIA-educated. Once you decide to sell your silver or gold, make sure you check to see how long the pawn shop has been in existence, as there are plenty of fly-by-night operations that have sprung up lately looking to take advantage of people who are unfamiliar with the process. It is best to take it to a pawn shop that specializes in jewelry buying.

Liz Taylor’s Jewels: A Hollywood Queen’s Collection

Looks like Marilyn wasn’t the only Hollywood icon fond of diamonds and jewels. The late, great Elizabeth Taylor’s jewelry collection will be up for auction in April at various locations, according to Christie’s America. Can you say fabulous?

Liz Knew Jewels

The larger-than-life icon was known to love large pieces and diamonds (Who doesn’t?), saying once, "You can't cry on a diamond's shoulder, and diamonds won't keep you warm at night, but they're sure fun when the sun shines.” She developed her passion for jewelry at a young age, as the Hollywood studios would shower her with gifts to “keep her happy.” Over time, she amassed an impressive collection worth an estimated $150 million at her death.

An Icon’s Collection

The collection included some of the world’s most expensive and impressive pieces including a sapphire engagement ring from second husband Michael Wilding and a Cartier necklace made of rubies and diamonds from third husband Mike Todd. Todd also gave a young Taylor a diamond tiara she liked to wear while swimming. (That is why she’s an icon.) Not to be outdone, fifth husband, Richard Burton, gave her a 33.19-carat Krupp diamond. (Makes you want to get married again, doesn’t it?)

One of Taylor’s favorite pieces was the Burton-Taylor 69.42-carat pear-shaped diamond necklace worth more than $1 million back in 1969. That was apparently a good year for Burton and Taylor, as he also gave her the 50-carat (10 g) La Peregrina Pearl— formerly owned by Mary I of England—as a Valentine's Day present that same year.

Self-Made (Woman) Billionaire

Taylor didn’t just lay around the pool waiting to be presented with gifts—she was one of the few female women self-made billionaires, ever. Her “White Diamonds” perfume line, launched in 1991, is still the best-selling celebrity fragrance in the world, and generated almost $77 million dollars in 2010. Taylor had a jewelry line of her own called House of Taylor. Peter Sedghi, President and CEO of Luxury Jewels of Beverly Hills, worked with Taylor on that business and was quoted as saying that she “knew more about jewels than he did.” Taylor took good care of her jewels. She had rooms to display them and knew where everything was. Her passion for jewelry was written about in the 2002 book, “Elizabeth Taylor: My Love Affair with Jewelry,” in which she discussed the pieces in her collection and where they came from. The book also includes anecdotes from family and friends and photographs by New York photographer John Bigelow Taylor.

Liz Taylor passed away of congestive heart failure at age 79 on March 23. May she rest in peace, and her jewelry collection go to the highest bidder.

Jewel of the Month—Aquamarine, the Birthstone for March

Aquamarine Set

The birthstone for people born in March is the aquamarine. Aquamarine gemstones are blue or sea-green in color and range from very light to very dark. They are available in two qualities, AA and AAA. AA stones are in light to medium tones, and AAA stones are medium to dark tones. It was believed to give its wearer good luck, knowledge and inspiration. When given as a gift, aquamarine symbolizes safety and security within long-standing relationships. It is also the symbol for a couple’s 19th wedding anniversary.

The name aquamarine comes from a Latin phrase meaning "water of the sea.” Translated, it literally means sea water. Perhaps that is why for centuries it has been a good luck symbol for sailors. Aquamarine gemstones are rich in history and many ancient people believed soaking a gemstone in water would cure health problems from eye issues to hiccups. It has been believed in ancient cultures to cure and protect the throat, which is why it was commonly used for necklaces. Some people also believed you could find the answers to life’s difficult questions from the spirits by holding an aquamarine gemstone in your mouth.

Famous Aquamarines

The Aquamarine is a Beryl stone, in the same family of the Emerald. However, because they are mined all over the world, they are fairly common and more affordable than the Emerald. The blue topaz, which is more common, is often mistaken for the aquamarine. Eleanor Roosevelt once received an aquamarine weighing 1,847 carats as a gift and it can be found in the Roosevelt’s New York estate. You can see an 879-carat aquamarine in a British museum and a 638-carat aquamarine can be found in a museum in Los Angeles.

Jewelry Fragrances—The Next Best Thing to the Bling

Craving a Cartier for your collection? Yearning for a David Yurman? Wanting to binge on a Bulgari? If you have a taste for expensive jewelry, but can’t stomach the prices, there’s an alternative in the air—high-end jewelry fragrances.

In a stroke of marketing genius, some of the world’s toniest jewelry manufacturers including Cartier, Bulgari, David Yurman, Tiffany & Co., Van Cleef & Arpels, Boucheron and Asprey have entered the perfume and fragrance market.

So what do jewelry fragrances smell like? Since diamonds and pearls don’t have an odor, the creative possibilities are wide open. David Yurman’s just-launched Essence Collection offers a trio of fragrances, each reflecting the essence of a different gemstone: pink tourmaline, lime green peridot and golden yellow citrine.

Fresh Essence comes in a peridot colored bottle and has a floral and fruity fragrance. Exotic Essence in a citrine bottle offers up mandarin, rose, patchouli and other exotic scents. And Delicate Essence represents pink tourmaline with pink pepper, lotus flower and orange blossom and other floral and wood notes. The series came out in February 2011 and retails around $85 per bottle.

Jewelry fragrances are attracting fashionistas because they’re an affordable luxury—a bone to the bourgeois in this economy. Now people who can’t afford the real bling can get the next best thing: a perfume presumably born of the same fine care and craftsmanship. Jewelry fragrances appeal to the celebrity in us. Perfume, like designer handbags and other must-have items, are about more than quality—they’re a personal lifestyle choice—a statement to the world. I’m wearing Cartier just sounds hot.

So even if you can’t binge on a Bulgari, you can still have a bottle of their newest scent—Mon Jasmin, due in March—on your bedroom bureau. That’s a win-win for consumer and brand. Spritz and enjoy, dah-ling!

Diamonds—Origin of the Jewel of Love

Most people consider diamonds the "jewel of love," a public symbol of engagement and a promise of everlasting love. But when did the romance with diamonds start, and why has a relatively common gem become synonymous with love and dedication?

A Brief History
The word "diamond" comes from the Greek word adamas, meaning "unconquerable." Diamonds are the hardest and most brilliant of all precious stones, a quality that has contributed to its symbolism of enduring love.

The first recorded history of the diamond dates back about 3,000 years to India, where it is likely that diamonds were first valued for their ability to refract light. In the Dark Ages, the diamond took on a mythical aura as a medical aid. It was believed that diamonds held in the hand or ingested could heal wounds and cure illnesses.

The popularity of diamonds increased in the Middle Ages with the discovery of many large and famous stones in India, such as the Koh-I-Noor and the Blue Hope. Today India maintains the foremost diamond polishing industry in the world.

"Central Selling Organization"
Then in the 19th century, after the discovery of huge diamond mines in South Africa, diamonds flooded the market. The glut of supply created so little demand that the British financiers of the South African mines created the De Beers company and its "central selling organization" to control supply and demand. De Beers still controls about 90% of the world's diamonds. Quality diamonds are actually not scarce at all, but De Beers controls how much supply comes on the market and that keeps prices high.

Diamonds Are Forever

De Beers also greatly influenced the association between diamonds and love. Because of their decades-long "Diamonds Are Forever" advertising campaign, the diamond engagement ring is now considered an essential part of the courting ritual of marriage. Marilyn Monroe also did her part in romanticizing diamonds. Who can forget the iconic song and dance number of "Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend" in the 1956 film, "Some Like It Hot."

The Kimberly Process
In the late 1990s, the diamond industry again changed as demand dropped due to the "blood diamond" controversy. De Beers, along with the U.N. Security Council, governments and other industry organizations, spearheaded the Kimberley Process, an international program that requires that governments certify that shipments of rough diamonds are free from conflict. More than 70 governments are now members of the Kimberley Process and almost 99 percent of all diamonds around the world are monitored through the Kimberley Process to ensure they are produced in an ethical and auditable manner.

Let Empire Appraise Your Diamond

If you're planning on selling your diamond, Empire Jewelers, Inc., Long Island's oldest fine jewelry buyers, are experts at appraising diamonds and other fine jewelry. An appraisal by a professional jeweler who specializes in watches will provide you with the most accurate information, but it’s helpful to do a little homework first so you know what to expect. Here is an overview of what makes a watch valuable before you bring it to be assessed:

Its Condition: Just because a watch is old doesn’t mean it was worn much in the past—perhaps it was only used for special occasions. The condition of the watch is extremely important in appraising its value. It will be worth much more if all of the parts and movement are original, especially there should be no changes to the face of the watch. Any scratches, dents, chips, or rust will lower its value.

The Inside: What it looks like on the outside is only part of the evaluation. The watch appraiser will look inside to see the internal movement of the watch and to make sure it’s working or can work, and if the mechanism parts are original. Also important is the number of jewels used in the mechanism. Generally the greater the amount of jewels, the better the movement.

The Manufacturer and Name Brand: If it is a famous or rare name brand watch, or from a well-known manufacturer, it will command a higher price. Within the watch should also be serial or model numbers.

Its Design and Composition: Craftsmanship and design matters. Intricate designs, enameled or hand painted designs, and inlays of precious stones will make your watch extremely valuable. An antique or vintage watch in solid gold or platinum, especially with an original band in good condition will greatly increase the worth of the watch. If the watch is truly gold, it will be stamped 14k, 18k or 750.

Gizmos and Gadgets: Watches that have unusual displays such as moon phases, timers, stop mechanisms, and/or show month date and day are of interest to collectors and will raise the value of the watch.

Age: Although the quality of the watch’s condition is usually more important, the age or historical value of the watch is also a consideration.

Demand: Finally, there will be little value to the watch if there are no interested buyers.

If you’re interested in selling or taking a loan out on your old watch, take a look at it carefully first and get an idea of how you think it may rate based on the factors above. Write down any logo, markings, serial or model numbers as well as any metal stamps indicated on the watch. It is important that you take your watch to a reputable jeweler with a specialty in fine watches to get a truly authentic appraisal. If you find out all you can about your watch before hand, you will have a better idea of what’s in store when you have it appraised, and whether or not you are confident in the appraisal you receive from the jeweler.

Empire Jewelers Empire Pawn of Nassau Inc., located in East Meadow, NY is more than just a pawn shop—they are expert jewelers—specialists of fine jewelry, diamonds, gold, sterling silver, estate and vintage jewelry, coins and other precious metals. In business for three generations, it is the oldest pawn broker and jewelry buyer business on Long Island. Consider selling or taking a loan on your unwanted gold jewelry and coins. Here’s how.

It’s no secret that the value of gold has increased to record levels in recent years. Many people are making the most of the current gold prices, and not just the commodity traders and precious metal experts! Regular people are taking advantage of the market, especially in light of the current tight-lending credit market.

With the holidays around the corner, now may be a good time to sell your unwanted gold jewelry and coins as a source of income to buy gifts and pay down debt. Taking a loan on the value of gold can also be a savvy financial move, considering the current bank lending environment. Here’s a Q&A on what to know before you sell.

Is it a good time to sell gold?

Gold is a safe haven investment against inflation and economic uncertainty, which is why we have seen the price of gold rising in recent times. Gold prices have risen about 70 percent over the last few years. Though the price has dipped since reaching record highs, prices are still bright.

So is now a good time to sell? It is hard to say for sure because the price of gold is directly related to changes in the fluctuating exchange rate—a weaker U.S. dollar usually means an increase in gold prices. However, a December 14, 2010 Wall Street Journal article stated that, “A higher-than-expected consumer price index (CPI) reading will be a boon to gold, which is considered an inflation hedge.” In other words, if the CPI is strong, gold traders will consider it a favorable condition to support higher gold prices.

What kind of gold can I sell?

The kind of gold you can sell ranges from inexpensive gold trinkets to solid gold coins to fine jewelry and even dental gold. A jeweler, pawn broker, gold refiner or scrap gold dealer will buy the gold at a price based on the weight of its gold content, minus a handling fee.. The purer the gold content, the more it is worth.

What determines the value of gold?

Pure gold jewelry is 24 karat. Generally, the gold content of any piece of jewelry—indicated in karats—will be marked on it somewhere such as the inside of a ring or bracelet, on the clip of a necklace or the back of an earring. For example, a 14-karat piece of gold jewelry may actually have "14 karat" inscribed on it, or the lettering may have"585" or "14K."replacecontent-tcm:8-23951 However, the stamp may not always be accurate, so to truly know its value it’s important to take it to a reputable jeweler to have it appraised. Before you decide to sell it, there are some important things you should know regarding how gold is appraised.

Where should I sell my gold?
To cash in on today’s trend, there are gold buyers popping up seemingly everywhere, including mail order sites, gold buying stores, even home parties. But you should beware of bringing your gold to someplace just because it seems convenient. Pawn shops generally pay faster than some other outlets, and pay in cash, whether you decide to sell it or take a loan on it. It’s important that the pawn shop or jewelry store you bring it to has a long-standing reputation and a jewelry appraiser with expertise because appraising gold jewelry goes well beyond just its weight in gold.

Why Empire Jewelers?

In business for three generations, Empire Jewelers, Inc. will take the utmost care in appraising your jewelry, offering you the opportunity to sell for cash, or take a loan out on its value. As the value of gold has sky-rocketed, so too has the number of people looking to buy gold and take advantage of those looking to cash in. Everywhere it seems there are places where you can bring your unwanted jewelry and walk away with money in your pocket. But beware, because what you can get in convenience can leave you less-the-richer in terms of the payment on the value of your gold.

When looking to sell your gold, it is important to get it evaluated by a professional jewelry appraiser. It may seem like an easy transaction, but there are factors involved when appraising jewelry that goes beyond just its weight in gold:

A professional jeweler has their reputation at stake. Look for a jewelry company that has been around for a number of years who will pay better because your repeat business is important to them.

Gold prices fluctuate day-by-day. A professional appraiser will know today’s value.

In addition to simply weighing your gold, an appraiser will be able to identify its karat, or level of purity

A reputable jeweler will explain how your gold is weighed, and how you will be paid (dollar amount per gram, troy ounce or pennyweight)

If your piece is an antique, vintage jewelry or from a famous maker such as Tiffany, a professional jeweler will take that into consideration and pay you what its worth, not just by weight

If you’d like cash in your pocket, now is a great time to sell the gold you can part with. Make sure you get the price you deserve by doing your homework and dealing with a jeweler who has earned your trust. When you know that your gold was evaluated by a reputable jewelry appraiser for what it is truly worth (and not just thrown on a scale by a non-professional looking to cash in) you’ll walk away with confidence that you haven’t been taken advantage of. Here Are Some Things You Should Know:

From September 1, 2010, gold has climbed to a record numerous times, peaking on November 9th when it reached $1,422 an ounce (the highest ever). While during the same period, there are global concerns that the US dollar will continue to drop in value. According to Bloomberg BusinessWeek, a survey of 29 analysts, traders and investors indicates that gold may rise as high as $1,500 in 2011.

If you’re strapped for cash like many of Americans today, you may be looking at your spare gold jewelry as a means to help with bills and living expenses. Before you decide to sell your gold, there are some important things you should know:

Find out the price of gold for the day from websites such as www.kitco.com, or newspapers, financial cable stations and other websites.

Whether you weigh it yourself or take it to an appraiser, make sure you know how much your gold weighs. Note that gold, silver and other precious metals are measured in troy ounces (equal to 31.1034768 grams). Certain jewelers also use the term “pennyweight” when referring to precious metal, and a troy ounce equals 20 pennyweights.

Know the karat in your gold jewelry because the value is based on not only its weight, but its level of purity. The purest gold is 24 karats, and when you see the price of gold per ounce, it is quoted for 24 karat or “pure gold.” If your gold is 14 or 18 karat, you will be paid only on the percentage that is pure gold. To calculate, simply divide 18 or 14 by 24. (For example, 14 divided by 24 = .5833 so the gold value for that piece is 58.33% of its weight. 18 karat gold will be valued at 75% of its weight.

Bring it to a reputable jeweler, especially if it is an heirloom. This will ensure that your piece will be appraised for its craftsmanship as well as its gold purity and weight.

A reputable jeweler will also explain how your gold is weighed, and how you will be paid (dollar amount per gram, troy ounce or pennyweight) and explain the purity level of your gold.

Start with scraps of gold from broken jewelry pieces before you sell a more valuable item. That way you can personally gauge your reaction to the buyer, whether you felt that they treated you fairly and were trustworthy, and whether you should deal with them in the future with your better pieces.

Although many economists forecast gold will continue to climb through 2011, if you need to have cash in your pocket, now is a great time to sell the gold you can part with. Make sure you get the price you deserve by doing your homework and dealing with a jeweler who has earned your trust.

We suggest that the first thing you do is watch a few auctions of similar diamonds as those you’d like to buy. Choose some diamonds that you like, and watch the auctions but don’t bid. This will help you understand what they are selling for, how quickly they are bid upon, and overall give you a sense of understanding the process.

EBay has a number of consumer-friendly safeguards in place, and the best to look at is the “Positive Feedback” rating. As you’re observing, check to make sure the person or company posting has few negative feedbacks, and at least 50 positive feedbacks from their past diamond sales. A less than 98% Positive Feedback score and you may want to avoid that seller. If it’s a new seller, you may want to wait to buy from them until they have more of a reputation on eBay.

When searching on eBay, use the “advanced search” option, where there is an “exclude these words” function. Exclude words like “zircon, “enhanced,” and “lab” to make sure you’re only searching for real diamonds.

EBay has a no-risk policy, if you do end up buying a diamond and you are not pleased with the service of the seller, or if the quality of your diamond is not was described. It’s called “eBay Buyer Protection.” If your purchase was covered by eBay Buyer Protection, and you contacted the seller and they did not satisfy your request, their customer support specialists will work with the seller to resolve the issue on your behalf. If you still do not get satisfaction, eBay will refund your full purchase price plus original shipping.

Make sure you buy only a “certified diamonds” that have been appraised by a reputable GIA-trained or certified appraiser. Diamonds are typically graded by the “4 C’s” which means:

Color: Most diamonds run from colorless to near-colorless, with slight hints of yellow or brown. “Color” is not how much color a diamond has, but the degree to which it is colorless. The GIA set the industry standard with its D-Z scale (D is colorless to Z meaning the most yellow.) The exceptions to this rule are the more rare blue or pink diamonds which aren’t included in the GIA’s D-Z scale.

Clarity: Most diamonds have tiny crystals, feathers or clouds within them, called “inclusions.” Surface imperfections are called “blemishes.” The rarest diamonds are flawless and have no internal inclusions or external blemishes. The GIA uses a Clarity Scale of 11 grades that are measured using 10 x magnifications.

Carat: Signifies the weight (not the size) of the diamond. One carat is equal to 200 milligrams. Since heavier diamonds are rarer than smaller diamonds, the value is higher the heavier the carat weight.

Cut: The cut of a diamond refers to its proportions, symmetry and polish. When evaluating cut, two aspects are evaluated, first its shape (round, marquise, square cut, etc.). The second aspect is how well the cutting was executed, as it must be geometrically precise since it will affect a diamond’s fire (the flash of rainbow colors from within) and brilliance (its sparkle). Whereas cut was historically the most subjective and difficult to standardize during appraisal, due to advances in technology, the GIA introduced its cut grading systems in 2005.

When looking to buy a diamond, if you’re buying online from a retail company, or an online shopping site, their prices can sometimes be cost-prohibitive, and eBay can offer enormous savings. For example, a comparable diamond that sells for $7,000 at a store like Zales, will sell on an eBay site such as Empire Jewelers for $2,500. Empire Jewelers typically averages 50% less than retail costs largely because their background is wholesale jewelry industry. Empire Jewelers has a reputation of never over grading their diamonds and they offer customers the time to have their diamonds appraised and a no-risk policy. They have earned a 99.6% positive feedback score on eBay.

Empire Jewelers is located in East Meadow, Long Island. It is run by third generation jewelers, who are specialists in fine jewelry, diamonds, gold, sterling silver, estate and vintage jewelry, coins and other precious metals. It is a family-owned business that has been buying and selling fine jewelry since 1930. What is the global jewelry-industry standard can be confusing for many consumers, especially for first-time buyers. What is considered a “perfect” diamond? Which “C” is most important? What factors should you not compromise on when considering not just a diamond’s beauty, but its value for the long term?

In the 1940s and ’50s, the Gemologists Institute of America (GIA), an educational and research non-profit organization founded in 1931, developed the “4Cs” and the GIA International Diamond Grading System™ to objectively compare and evaluate diamonds. Today, even if you buy a diamond in another part of the world, the jeweler will likely use the same GIA grading systems.

When looking to purchase a diamond, one must first understand what the 4C’s indicate:

The GIA International Diamond Grading System provides the industry standard when an appraiser evaluates a diamond’s value, and a report should be provided by an impartial expert, preferably one who is GIA-trained to prevent “over-grading” (over-valuation.)
Although your own personal preference will go into your purchasing decision, a general guideline for a diamond of quality would be a carat size of .50 points (1/2 carat) or larger, color of D-H, clarity of SI2 (slightly included 2) or better. For cut, it is preferred to have a depth and table proportion of 56%-62%, and good or better polish and symmetry.

Empire Jewelers, Inc. does not sell diamonds that are “enhanced,“ “treated,” “drilled” (designed to remove any black or colored inclusions) or over-graded, and highly suggest that diamond buyers beware of these terms because they will reverse the value of the diamond over the years and therefore are not good investments. In addition, Empire does not sell diamonds with clarity ratings of I2 to I3 as we believe they lack eye appeal.

Although there are additional factors to consider, these basics should help you choose a fine diamond that will always keep its value. Before you purchase a previously owned piece of jewelry, it’s important to know the differences.

Although estate jewelry connotes a piece that has been passed down from generations passed, it refers to any piece of jewelry that was previously owned, regardless of its age. It can be broken down into two types, vintage jewelry (less than 100 years) and antique jewelry (more than 100 years old.)

Vintage jewelry is jewelry that was created up to the point it is considered an antique. Today, vintage generally means a piece that was made after the 1920’s and includes the “Retro Era” the glamorous, Hollywood-inspired 1940’s jewelry, the Jacqueline Kennedy inspired 60’s jewelry, and even the dramatic and bold jewelry of the1980’s.

According to government guidelines, antiques are items that are at least 100 years old. Popular jewelry created in historic eras that are still commonly found in the U.S. through estate sales generally being in the rare Georgian Era (1714-1837), in which every piece was hand-crafted and therefore very valuable. The Victorian years provided jewelry fashion with three distinct eras that include Early Romantic Victorian (1837-1850), Grand Mid-Victorian (1860-1880) and Late Aesthetic Victorian (1885-1990). The simplified jewelry of the Arts & Crafts Movement (1894-1923) was a hand-made jewelry artisan’s rebellion to the Industrial Revolution, while at the same time Art Nouveau Jewelry (1895-1915) was popularized by the famous French jeweler LaLique. Edwardian Era-jewelry, named after Queen Victoria’s son, Edward was popular during 1901-1910, followed by the visually forward Art Deco Style (1920-1935.)

Since the cost of buying estate jewelry often costs much less than its original price when it was new, it can be an excellent choice if you’re considering buying gold and diamonds as investments. The most valuable pieces will be those fine jewelry pieces that are considered antiques and are still in excellent condition.

If you would like to know more about the Vintage and Antique jewelry from Empire, visit Empire’s online store or contact us today.
