EPFO aims at investing in private sectors

The Employees Provident Fund Organization, better known as EPFO, a leading retirement fund corporation, has asked for greater flexibility in investing in private sectors and in NBFC (Non banking finance companies).

The EPFO’s central board of trustees is set to meet next week to discuss investment possibilities in the private sector and EPFO is also considering investing in instruments that have tenure of 15 years, a rise from the current 10 year policy.

This move is being planned as the company has exhausted its investment limits and is hence looking for possible fields for expansion. Under the present scenario, the EPFO has the authority to invest in seven entities consisting of three banks and four non banking institutions.

The banks involved with the EPFO are Axis bank, HDFC and ICICI and the non banking institutions are IDFC Ltd, IL&FS Ltd, HDFC Ltd and LIC Housing Finance Ltd. The private sector banks offer lower returns than their private sector counterparts and this is the major reason for the lookout for possible investment plans.

The Provident Body wants the Board of Trustees to allow it to invest in certificate of deposits in public sector banks as they have a higher investment limit. Certificate of Deposits are issued by the banks to primarily increase its funds by trading in the share market. CDs are actually trading instruments that a bank possesses.

The EPFO also wants to raise the time frame of investing in fixed deposits to five years from the present one year cap. These decisions, if taken, are sure to help raise funds for the EPFO and hence the company is determined to get the necessary permissions to invest.

According to company statistics, if the investment plans are passed, the company will be able to recover from losses incurred during the 2010 - 2011 period. During the 2010 – 11 periods the company had reduced PF deposit rates to 8.25 % from 9.5 % for all its subscribers.

Provident Fund Status that is being looked after in most of the cases by Employee’s Provident Fund (EPF) organization was established in the year 1952. The Employee’s Provident Fund (EPF) Act along with the Miscellaneous Provisions (MP) Act was established in the same year 1952 and fuelled the formation of EPF. The schemes of provident fund can be joined by an employee only after getting the consent of the employer. Having received the employer’s consent, if an employee earns more than a fixed minimal value, he or she is eligible for the provident fund schemes.

The basic rate of fund payment by an employee depends on this basic salary. Again, the employee can specify if he wants higher amount of money to be excluded for provident fund from his salary. This money does not fall under tax payment and hence can be extremely beneficial for the employees. During later part of their job, the money of provident fund is used for the beneficial activities of the employee.

Other Benefits

Provident Fund Status of an employee is directly related to the maximum amount of loan an employee can take from the employee’s provident fund organization, popularly known as EPF organization. Each employee can withdraw a major part of his or her money saved as provident fund before retirement. The remaining money is received after retirement and can be further used for sustaining the post retirement phase of an employee. The phenomenon when an employ quits his or her job or shifts it, then the calculations for the provident fund or PF depends on the scheme one had applied for during the time of joining.

While mentioning the specific details about one’s self in the provident fund scheme, the nomination for one’s heir is the most important. Provident Fund Status requires each employee to specify who shall get all of his or her monetary property from the provident fund in case of his absence through death. In case of severe physical disability, the nominee of the employee can withdraw specific amounts of money after filling up all the legal forms regarding this matter. The nominee has to produce valid papers and proofs to testify the physical disability of any particular employee to get access to his or her account.

EPF Balance

The EPF balance calculations need special techniques. Many online web sites have come into existence that can calculate the Employee’s Provident Fund balance, that is, the EPF balance. Check your Monthly EPF Balance

More than 50 million members of the retirement fund body EPF India can obtain e-passbook along with details of their updated accounts online from July 25, 2012.

"The EPFO subscribers can get their statement of accounts online from today," Central Provident Fund Commissioner R. C. Mishra said while addressing a seminar on Employees' Provident Fund Act by the PHDCCI here.

In order to avail this facility, the active subscribers would have to register themselves on the EPFO portal by furnishing their account details.

The facility to obtain e-passbook will be available only for active members of the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) and would not be extended to those whose accounts are inoperative, settled or have negative balance.

The members of exempted provident fund trusts regulated by the EPFO, too will too not be entitled for this facility through its portal.

The e-passbook will also have additional information like name, date of birth and account number.

Mishra also informed that the EPFO is in the process of introducing the facility of online settlement of provident fund claims in a couple of months.

At present, the subscribers who are either superannuated or applied for withdrawals, can apply only manually and is time consuming.

As per the EPFO citizen charter, such claims should be settled within a month, though it takes longer than that.

Mishra said in order to provide the facility of online application of claims, EPFO would require a central database. At present, all regional EPFO offices maintain their database separately.

"These works including fund transfers, settlement of PF accounts and withdrawals constitute over 80% of our work," he said, adding online claim settlement will save time and improve efficiency.
