Some Maui History from Royal Guard

Paulo Faleafine belongs to the Royal Guard on Maui. He gave a presentation on the history of some of the queens and princesses of Maui during an event called Ho'ike'ike Hawaiian Heritage and Environmental Sustainability at Kamehameha iki park in Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii.
It's some interesting quick moving information.

That in mind, here is a bit on Maui and Google. Awhile back I saw Google initially going around Maui with the car/camera setup and can't find that picture, but a search shows someone spotted them back in April 2919 in Pukalani, but it was probably earlier than that in Kahului.

Their new camera looks more like a ball or helmet than the old flat disc shaped one they had. This new camera has more angles that it can look at.

The cameraman Eric from Google, with his laptop installed and the car built to run this camera, is off to Hana today. So smile up on the Hana Highway and in Hana, you may be on Google Street View.

Eric, despite cloudy looking weather, will have to press on to get Maui done today. His next stop is Molokai. So be kind to him on Molokai and show them your the friendly isle.

I get caught up posting on my other blogs and facebook, I don't get back here often enough. I hope to keep the type of content more organized based on the blog that I'm posting on. Last night's Wailuku Town 1st Friday for August was a blast as usual. Between break dancing to a multitude of bands with a jazz them to most of them, arts, crafts and plenty of food, not to mention all kinds of people. Hmm? Guess I did mention it.

Quiet Maui Sunday Morning shattered by Pawn shop burglary

Luckily Maui doesn't seem to have too many "in your face" type crimes going on, but living close to the Kahului Police Department and Hospital, I definitely get to hear all the activity.
This Sunday morning after picking up coffee and a paper, I came across a bunch of police cars around the First National Pawn shop in the Kahului industrial area.

I generally have my camera with me at all times and detours through the "less traveled" roads are my preference, which makes an industrial area on a Sunday one of those routes. It's the detours and side trips that always seem to present the photo ops.

I would rather take pictures of the scenery and wild life, but this is a sample of some of the wilder life on Maui, so here it is.

Maui July Rains

July on Maui was a pretty dry month, at least in Kahului, where my yard really showed it. Friday night, the 29th brought some pretty good rain to Kahului, enough to tell me how bad my roof leaks anyways. The day looked pretty much like all the cloudy days we seem to get now, (See www.ConcernedVoices.com or http://MagicMauiFarms for more on the chem trail theories), but I wouldn't have put money on it raining.

The rains went on into the next morning. Despite the rainfall, these pictures of Kanaha Pond show just how dried out the pond has gotten. The tradewinds and cloud cover are keeping Kahului from directly baking, but I wonder how much of the heat is trapped close to the surface by the blanket of clouds.

Maui's Barrio Fiesta May 29, 2011

Maui's Barrio Fiesta is held on Memorial Day weekend at the Wailuku War Memorial's Soccer Field. According to one of the organizers, the Fiesta is held purposely on Memorial Day each year to remember that Filipinos have an important role.

In Hawaii, there is no doubt that part of our mixed plate of cultures includes a heavy dose of the Filipino culture. It can be seen daily in many ways and is emphasized each year though events such as Maui's Annual Barrio Fiesta.

Beyond the variety of entertainment and events, I know many look forward to indulging in the large selection of foods offered by many non profits. Most of them supported through events such as the Annual Barrio Fiesta on Maui.

Trying to be helpful, as well as keep any extra "seasoning" out of the food, Maui County Council Member Mike Victorino wipes the hard working chef on duty, while he helps prepare the food for the traditional last day free feast that is offered up to the volunteers and the public.

Some of the non profits got pretty creative with their booths.

While I missed the rest of the entertainment and can't compare, I thought this young lady was really good and would be curious to know more about here and here performance. Any one know and want to comment?

Kikiada back to the rescue at the Maui Matsuri 2011

The Maui Matsuri Japanese Cultural Festival held on Maui is always a major event. One that is always pulled off so smoothly, at least from the publics view.

The Maui Matsuri is one of the public events held by the Japanese Cultural Society of Maui (JCSM).
The JCSM was started back in 1969 by Nisei (first generation children) women that wanted to keep the heritage going. The Issei were the first generation of immigrants to Hawaii, so educating and creating awareness for their children the Nisei, the grandchildren the Sensei, their great-grandchildren the Yonsei and these days the Gosei, the fifth generation born to at least one Yonsei parent.

Mrs. Edith Izumi, the Society's first President and the member defined their objectives for the JCSM.

They are:

To promote and encourage the preservation and perpetuation of the Japanese culture in Hawaii;
To work for the common good and general welfare;
To promote and cultivate good fellowship among the members; and
To participate in activities which would enhance and enrich the life of the community.

The Maui Matsuri was held on Market Street in Wailuku Town when I first attended it. Since then they have successfully pulled off several of Matsuri events, including this years, at the now University of Hawaii-Maui Campus.

Always a highlight of the event is the visit of Kikaida and his brother Kikaida 01. Doing battle on stage to protect Maui from the Kikaida brother's longtime foes always has the kids cheering and rooting the Kikaida along. This year was no exception. Hawaii Farmers United Hosts It's First Locavore Cook-Off Contest

The highlight of the March Hawaii Farmers United meeting was the new Locavore Cook-Off Contest. With some great judging by Chef Justin Pardo of Market Fresh Bistro and fellow judge Mellisa Panzirini, as well as the wonderful cooks that enters some great food, not only did three people win great prizes from Whole Foods, Down To Earth, Hawaiian Moons and Edible Hawaiian Islands Magazine, but we all got to partake of the wonderfully delicious pot luck after the contest and before one of our best meetings with around 100 people in attendance.

Sitting in front of Ross's while waiting to give his son a ride, Mr. Johnny Felipe, a name I've heard since I was a teen, was playing harmonica with his makeshift boombox/guitar pickup and a harmonica.

Before long Mr Jim Doeden, a visitor from Arizona happened up and borrowing Johnny's guitar joined Johnny in some impromptu entertaining for the people lucky enough to be around and graciously allowed me to film them.

Jim Doeden is a performing musician and has recorded CD's back home. Anyone interested can contact me and I can put you together. Moving the Middle Class Worker Down the Scale

Back in October of 2009, the middle class labor was already taking a beating as the corporate world pushed ahead with not only their years of profit taking, but in many areas they were being "bailed" out by the government and ultimately the taxpayer that worked for them. So in many ways the average worker took less money, payed more of what they did make to bail out major corporations and in the end thousands were thanked by laying them off.

This clip is from one I posted then about the Carpenter's Union protesting the use of non local contractors at the Walgreens store, not only in Kahului, but the state.

Below this clip is the same protest going on Today, almost unnoticed by hundreds of Maui citizens that pass the intersection of Puunene and Kamehameha each day. The fact that people are willing to stand up for others and give their time up day after day, is something that should not become common place. The more we as the working class people are willing to accept this sort of treatment, the more likely it will be to see any one of us, family or friends walking the street in protest AND working multiple low paying jobs to get by.

What In The World Are They Spraying - The Maui Premier

I have lately tuned in more and more on the whole chem trail issue and that Maui is a big hotspot, with much focus on it. Yesterday, December 20th 2010, at the Temple of Peace in Haiku, Maui was the Maui Premier of Michael Murphy's new film called "What in the World are they Spraying?"

So I just thought I would point it out and provide a link to a related article I did at my Concerned Voices site.

Health Creates Wealth For The Last 200 Years.

Despite the industrialization of our food supplies, people of the world seem to have been able to obtain a longer life expectancy and greater wealth. The movement towards a more responsible and conscious food system could be the key to maintaining the progress. It would seem to me that in the last decade, our society has adopted too much of the earlier advancements, to the point of no longer eating real food. This is becoming more apparent in our rising medical costs and just looking around at the physical changes that everyone from children to seniors are going through.

My guess is that if we don't get on track and stay on track in producing healthy, vitality filled foods, we are likely to see a big decline in both life expectancy and wealth. This quick view of the last 200 years is pretty interesting though.
