We'd had Elate Beauty on our wish list of brands we'd love to collab with and then boom- her DM appeared! 

After connecting on a call together, we knew we needed to collaborate on something as our brands are so aligned in our values and who we help with the products we create.

Elate Beauty is a Canadian-made, vegan, cruelty-free cosmetics brand based on the west coast of Canada.

Founder of Elate Beauty, Melodie Reynolds wanted to create less waste in the industry while producing beautiful products that are safe and kind to our skin, while providing long lasting wear and coverage.

Elate Beauty was kind enough to gift me some products as part of our collaboration together, and I - who rarely wears makeup on my mid 40s skin, put together this fun get ready with me video where I tested a ton of their products.

After filming this video, and spending hours editing it - Instagram decided to speed up my voice to Alvin and the Chipmunks style, so I apologize for that one clip!

It was actually a ton of fun to film. As I mentioned, I don't wear a ton of makeup as I don't like to 'look' like I'm wearing makeup, however I do want to look more put together on the daily, and makeup does play a role in that for me.

When I'm traveling, I definitely don't want to bring too much which is another reason I love Elate Beauty. I'll get to that in detail later, but their innovative magnetic Palettes work perfectly for going carry-on only with your fav makeup products stashed neatly away.

Here are my top 5 favourite Elate Beauty products that I tried:

1. The Serum Concealer

I've used concealer in the past, but actually have preferred for a while to use a colour corrector from Stila, and then some foundation because I find in my midlife phase that many concealers are just WAY too drying. So, they enhance the fine lines under my eyes and then flake later in the day. Not this one! The Serum Concealer has hyaluronic acid in it, which must be part of the reason it's so moisturizing. Seriously NO dryness and amazing coverage. 

Shade: SN1.5 | Light Neutral

*Full disclosure I had to ask AI what shade to get since I'm clueless with makeup/colours and it was BANG on.

2.  The Essential Mascara

I've got extremely sensitive skin, especially as I've hit 40. Everything irritates me and my eyes have gotten dryer... is that a midlife thing? Anyway, I LOVE this mascara. Firstly, the packaging is clean. It's in a glass container with a bamboo wood top - love that. It's also refillable which is really cool and sustainable. The product itself goes on smooth, and doesn't over cake my eye lashes. The brush is small which I love. After a day of wearing, it didn't flake either which might be from the Jojoba Oil or Organic White tea in the formula.

Shade: Brown

3. The Good Gloss

If you were alive in the late 90s, you're probably still traumatized from MAC Cosmetics lip glass. Gosh darn, that was SO sticky. Why did we put that on our lips?! Anyway, I'm not a lipstick girlie. In fact, I own zero lipsticks, but I love the idea of a gloss as it's moisturizing but adds a pinch of colour. It's SOOOOO moisturizing. Again, I'm guessing it's the hyaluronic acid, but there's also Rosehip and Meadowform seed oil. Lovely.

Shade: Enamour, a sheer neutral pink and Clear.

*AI also helped me pick the right shade here, as I'm clueless. Though I will say Elate Beauty had a lot of pics of products on different skin tones which was helpful for colour selection.

4. The Powder Brush

This was something I added into my cart last minute.. I have a LOT of makeup brushes but they're old, and despite a regular cleaning routine, they don't feel great against my skin and some are also shedding as I use them. So, I picked this cute fluffy powder brush. It's made from Taklon, a cruelty-free, anti-bacterial and hypoallergenic alternative to fur, and sustainably-sourced bamboo. Firstly - I had NO idea makeup brushes used real fur. Ugh. But the bristles on this are insanely soft, and I love that it's kind to animals and my skin.

5. The Eyeline Pencil

I'm not one to wear eyeliner but I thought I'd give this a go! Firstly, I love a two-fer. So, this is not just an eyeliner but you can use it in your brows too. A win for packing and traveling lighter. It went on really easily (and I'm not a pro at lining) and I thought it looked really good and wore well throughout the day. It's got a lot of moisturizing ingredients like Vitamin E, and rice bran oil. The packaging - again, so thoughtfully done and rooted in sustainability. The pencil itself is California cedarwood and it's PEFC-certified which means it's from sustainably managed forests. The lid is made from corn so it can be industrially composted. A beautiful, staple product in my beauty routine.

Shade: Brown

Honourable Mention: Their Palettes

One of the coolest things about this brand is their reusable, magnetic palettes where you can custom create your favourite go-to makeup palette. They're made from water-treated Bamboo! Although I did find it a little confusing to figure out how much product to put in each one, I ended up going with the Essential Palette and putting in four eye shadows and a cream blush. There's a nice little mirror inside and it reduces the amount of packaging that the products like the eye shadows come in (they come in biodegradable paper packaging made from sugarcane!)

I can tell you as someone who runs a brand with sustainably at it's core the attention to detail that Elate Beauty has to their sustainable packaging is SO impressive. It's an incredibly huge on cost to create a brand in Canada and utilize premium, eco-friendly and naturally-derived packaging. I cannot imagine her supply chain and how complex it is. That said, it creates a unique experience for their brand and customers which makes them stand out online.

When pressed together, they hold each of the looks together. The Chrysalis Cardi has a top edge with 4 snaps, and the bottom edge with 2 snaps. To open a snap, use your nail to split the snap versus pulling on the fabric.

Planet-Friendly Packaging at Encircled 

Since the founding of Encircled, we have always considered how every decision we make impacts the environment. In fact, as a Certified B Corporation, we’re legally required to consider the impact of our business decisions on the environment, our workers, suppliers, community, and our customers. So when it comes to sustainability, you can rest assured that we’re talking genuine sustainability - no green-washing here! 

We know our community shares our passion for building a better, more sustainable fashion industry, so we’re always excited to share any changes at Encircled, big and small, and let you know how these changes will impact you and the planet. The most recent change? We’ve decided to move our inventory from our studio to a local warehouse, which means we’ve had to make some changes to the packaging that comes with your Encircled orders. Our team carefully considered every step of our new shipping process to make sure it will be as sustainable as possible, while ensuring that the new packaging will protect your garments in transit and ensure their longevity. Read on to learn about what your upcoming Encircled orders will look like and the sustainability of our new packaging!

Mailer Bags 

We ship the majority of our orders in a compostable mailer bag, as they are a great alternative to plastic plastic poly mailers. The mailer is made from Corn Starch, PLA (polylactic acid made from corn waste and other plants), PBAT (biodegradable and will decompose leaving no toxic residues), and the ink is soy-based. Certified compostable, the mailer will break down in a home compost in 180 days, or in a commercial compost in 90 days.

Boxes

The remainder of our orders are shipped in Kraft Mailer boxes, made from corrugated kraft cardboard, which are fully recyclable.

Compostable Garment Bags

With our pieces now being stored in a warehouse, one big change you’ll see is that each of our items now needs to be packaged in garment bags to protect the garment both in the warehouse and in transit to your closet. Our items are packaged within a certified home compostable alternative to a traditional plastic poly bag. Made from corn starch with a man-made binding agent added for flexibility, these bags protect your garments from the elements and can be composted at home. They will biodegrade within 180 days in a backyard compost. 

Hang Tags & Biodegradable Fasteners

You’ll notice that every garment is now hang tagged. To protect the garment, we put the hang tag through the garment label. Our hang tags are made from FSC-certified, recycled card-stock, printed with soy-based or HP non-toxic inks. They are recyclable and home-compostable. The fasteners we use are biodegradable, designed to biodegrade in less than a year once it is on soil. The technology used results in no microplastics so that when a fastener degrades all that is left is carbon dioxide, water and microbes.

Tissue Paper

Our tissue paper is FSC-certified and made from recycled materials, uses soy-based ink and is 100% compostable, it breaks down fully in a home compost within 180 days.

How to Style Women's Biker Shorts for Summer

Does the thought of wearing bike shorts conjure up instant fear? Or does it remind you of a time past that you don’t want to revisit?

Us too.

You’re not alone in struggling to style women’s biker shorts for who you are today. 

If you’re over 30 years of age, you’ll likely recall a time when women’s bike shorts were *it*. 

It was called the 1980s. 

A time when hot pink dominated the fashion runways and before stretch fabrics really made a debut. Luckily, bike shorts have come a long way since then and are incredibly popular and flattering on all body types.

Figuring out what to wear with biker shorts can make or break the style as an essential in your capsule wardrobe. Fundamentally, a capsule wardrobe needs to contain only items that you wear on repeat - you don’t have space for non-functional clothing that is rarely worn.

Like many trends, what goes around comes around and a few seasons back, women’s bike shorts started to appear everywhere. 

At Encircled, we don’t love to follow the trends - slow fashion is all about being timeless over trendy, however, this ‘trend’ of bike shorts has stuck around, so we’re committing to it as a new capsule wardrobe essential for summer. 

We’ve made our sustainable version of a classic bike short from locally knit and dyed MicroModal Lycra. Stretchy, soft and incredibly resilient these shorts will be your new fav.

Are you Familiar with Fashion Revolution Week? 

It’s the week that brings together the world’s largest fashion activism movement for seven days of action surrounding the anniversary of the Rana Plaza factory collapse on April 24th, 2013 (the fourth largest industrial disaster in history). More than 1,100 people – mostly young women – died in the collapse and another 2,500 were severely injured. 

The shared vision of this movement is for a fashion industry that conserves and restores the environment and values people over growth and profit. The majority of people that make clothing are not paid enough to meet their basic needs. That’s why the theme for this year’s Fashion Revolution Week is MONEY FASHION POWER. Popular Big brands and retailers in this industry produce too much too fast, and that takes us into a never ending cycle of overconsumption and pollution that is damaging our lives, minds and the Earth.

If you have seen yourself trapped in this cycle but want to change, this might be your call to start! Slowly but surely we can all do something in order to start a revolutionary new fashion industry, for a better present for us and a better future for the planet.

Let’s do this together! Here is a list of 8 ways that you can join this revolution, not just this week, but always:

1. When shopping for clothes, look for fabric certifications (ie. GOTS, OEKO-TEX, Bluesign System, Naturtextil) to support brands who aren’t polluting our waterways and putting their workers at risk with toxic substances. At Encircled, we use OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified, so you can feel good knowing your clothing is free of harmful chemicals. We also work with one of the last Dye Houses in Canada, Ajax Textile. By having our fabrics dyed locally, we know the dye house has met Canada’s stringent regulations covering the dye and finish industry; the same regulations don't exist in many countries overseas. Not only does Ajax Textile meet the Canadian standards, but their discharge levels are far below both federal and provincial standards.They work with the City of Ajax to continuously monitor their waste water to ensure it’s treatable by the municipal sanitary authority. 2. Support brands who ensure their workers have safe working conditions and are paid fairly. There is no sustainable fashion without fair pay. Pressuring the Industry to pay fairly can transform the lives of the workers and help redistribute money and power in the global fashion industry. At Encircled, not only are our factories subject to the high labour standards of the Province of Ontario, we also have each factory sign our Ethical Code of Conduct checklist, to go above what’s required by law. Learn more about our factories here.

3. Support local brands who aren’t transporting their clothing production overseas (reducing CO2 emissions) and can oversee their factories to grant best practices. Our factories are all within a short drive of our Toronto studio, greatly reducing the environmental impact of transporting our clothing.

4. Look for sustainable fabrics with low-impact dyes, positively impacting both the planet and your health. These are fabrics that are grown without the use of pesticides, herbicides, or artificial fertilizers and have the advantage of being biodegradable and avoid using plastics. Some of our favorite fabrics are: modal, bamboo, linen, organic cotton etc. Not only are these fabrics more gentle on the planet, but they’re incredibly soft and elevate any style. Learn more about our fabrics.
