Harvard Medical School released their take on the USDA’s MyPlate, reducing the emphasis on milk/dairy, adding in water and healthy oil, making the distinction of healthy protein, and removing potatoes from the vegetables section.

New York University nutrition professor Marion Nestle, author of “Food Politics”, made some good points over at the Boston Globe, criticizing it for not including more servings of healthful sources of dairy like fat-free milk or low-fat yogurt, eliminating eggs, and lumping sweet potatoes in with regular potatoes.

While I do agree with most of what Nestle said, Harvard’s plate is still a step in the right direction.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings first apologizes for a lack of communication, and then gives his thoughts about the recent price changes and separation of DVDs and streaming (which is still the right move, as Hastings reiterates).

The wording is good. Amazingly, it doesn’t sound like the total bullshit you usually read in such posts. But here’s my favorite part:

For the past five years, my greatest fear at Netflix has been that we wouldn’t make the leap from success in DVDs to success in streaming. Most companies that are great at something – like AOL dialup or Borders bookstores – do not become great at new things people want (streaming for us) because they are afraid to hurt their initial business.

When I read this, I have one larger thought than Hastings: Microsoft.

Why is legacy Windows and all its baggage a part of Windows 8? Because of Hastings last sentence above.

He continues:

Eventually these companies realize their error of not focusing enough on the new thing, and then the company fights desperately and hopelessly to recover. Companies rarely die from moving too fast, and they frequently die from moving too slowly.

We see this time and time again. Complacency. These thoughts are nothing new. But what’s great is Netflix’s gumption to execute — stupid name or not.

Also great: Hastings is on Microsoft’s board. There is still hope.

MG is right on.

Streaming is the future and DVDs were holding them back. Now Netflix can go full steam ahead with streaming and not worry about hurting the DVD side of their business. And the DVD service (yeah the name is bad) can focus on improving that side without having to worry about streaming. Makes perfect sense.

And the (over)reaction you are seeing on the ‘nets? Change sucks. No one likes it, but sometimes it is for the better.

When Netflix raised prices, people complained and threatened to kill their DVD plan because they didn’t really use it (enough) anyway. So they went streaming only. Now they complain because they can’t get DVDs through the same service!?! Really?

Fickle much?

Unlimited streaming for $7.99 is an incredible value. It has replaced cable, at a fraction of the cost, for my family. We have NO problem finding something good to watch when we sit down on the couch. (And don’t bring up Starz. I don’t even remember the last time I saw the Starz logo before something I watched.)

And remember that price increase you complained about? Well if you want to do DVD again (you did kill your DVD plan didn’t you? or was it all talk?), you can do Qwikster too for $7.99. So $15.98 for DVD + streaming. That price sounds familiar, huh?
