Sometimes Camping is Hard

I’m not going to lie. We are far from the perfect campers. Our first night this trip was rough. Ticks. A mad bee in our shelter. A sudden hard rain that came out of nowhere and caught us all by surprise, with our tent windows open. Grumpy kids and parents. Mosquito bites. Skinned knees. So many walks to the bathroom. So many.

And sometimes, it’s amazing. Listening to Adelaide tell story after story with her story dice. Watching Hudson make piles and piles of broken twigs for the campfire. Listening to Josephine squeal with glee watching everyone. Watching Eleanore tend the campfire safely. Even when the firewood is soggy and the campfire refuses to light, it’s worth it.

We camped at Cedar Point Campground in the Croatan National Forest (close to Emerald Isle, North Carolina), and stayed at campsite 22.

Friday we woke up to storms and rain. It got really windy quickly when Jason had taken the big kids to the bathroom, and when a small branch hit our shelter, I jumped in the truck with Josephine for a bit. Later we saw that there were a lot of downed branches across the campground. Storms and dropping branches (or trees!) are the scariest part of tent camping. It looked like rain for the day, so we headed out for some sightseeing by car.

We ended up at the Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores and actually got in free, except for Hudson, because we home school! Hudson isn’t school age, so we had to pay for him. The aquarium was nice- a little small but all the exhibits looked clean and well maintained. Adelaide and Eleanore loved touching the rays and horseshoe crabs.

The weather cleared up later that afternoon, so we stopped at a public beach for a walk nearby. The waves were pretty high because of the storms, and we got to see numerous puffer fish and cannonball jellyfish washed up on the shore. We stayed out of the water due to all the jellyfish. They were really cool to see, but I wouldn’t want to feel one!

Saturday’s weather was gorgeous. Cool and crisp, but still sunny. The *perfect* camping weather! We drove over to Beaufort after fixing a nice breakfast, planning to take the ferry from there to Shackleford Banks, an island known for its wild horses. However, when we got to Beaufort we discovered the ferry was only running from further away Morehead City that day. Heading out of Beaufort, we followed the coast a bit and on the nearby islands, what did we see, but wild horses!

The ferry from Moorehead City leaves from the Cape Lookout National Seashore Visitor Center, a National Park, so we got to stamp our National Park passport book- I love that little book, and took some time remembering all the places we have gotten it stamped as I flipped through it. We almost have the Southeast Region completely filled with stamps.

Cape Lookout has an amazing lighthouse with the checkerboard pattern the Outer Banks is known for. It hadn’t opened for the season yet, but you can still stop at that island to check it out via the ferry.

The ferry to Shackleford Banks dumps you out right on the sandy shore- no dock! That was a bit of a surprise, and we took our shoes off so we wouldn’t get wet jumping off in a few inches of water. You can even backpack camp there- there were quite a few tents set up and people with all their gear. It may have given us a little spark of inspiration to give it a try in the future. We saw their packs, and Jason and I started talking about how the girls were big enough to carry some gear on their backs.

It was very windy on the island, and we walked down the shore picking up shells for about an hour and ate our packed lunch on the beach. The island is so beautiful, but the wind blowing sand into us was a little painful for the kids in shorts- wear pants!

It started to rain, so we picked up the ferry a little earlier than we’d planned. We didn’t manage to walk among the wild horses, but we did see them as we left! The ferry stopped at the Cape Lookout lighthouse before heading back, so we got a closer look from the ferry but we didn’t stop to explore. We headed back to our campsite for some fantastic spaghetti- it’s so amazing how satisfying cooking and eating outdoors is after a day of exploring. The kids had a blast making shadow puppets in the tent after dinner and then Eleanore read from Harry Potter and the Sorceror’s Stone before bedtime.

Do you have a camp home? A place you can escape to often, that's not too far away, to just disconnect from the stresses in your life and regroup? A place you find yourself retreating to, time and time again? Or do you choose to adventure to new places every time you camp or travel?

We disconnected from the "real world," the past two nights and headed to our camp home- South Mountains State Park in North Carolina. It's only about ninety minutes away from home for us, and makes an easy escape. The bathrooms are always clean, there are hot showers, and many of the campsites back right up to the Jacob Fork River- a beautiful shallow river that is refreshing to play in on a hot day. We've camped here all year round, including January!

One of our family's favorite snacks for hiking is fruit leather. Our two year old practically LIVES on fruit (and cheese), but bananas, berries and apples so often get squished and bruised bouncing around in a day pack or stepped on in the car before we even make it to the trailhead. Fruit leather is the perfect way to bring fruit on the trail in a non messy way, plus it's so easy to whip up with a dehydrator.

My dehydrator is an Excalibur with a temperature control, but you can use any dehydrator in any price point for easy fruit leather. You will need either a silicone or teflon sheet (or round ones if you have a nesco) to line your trays, or parchment paper (do not use wax paper- it will adhere to whatever you are trying to dehydrate!).

Fruit leather can be as simple as dumping a jar of applesauce on your dehydrator tray, spreading it around and dehydrating at 135*. However applesauce is also a great mixer for ANY fruit- fresh or frozen. I blend applesauce with whatever berries are on sale for cheap seasonal leather. This past week, blackberries were .99 a pint, so applesauce blackberry leather went into the dehydrator overnight, and I woke up to six sheets of fresh leather.
I love experimenting with different flavors, though, so two of our favorite recipes combine VEGETABLES with fruit and they turn out amazing.
Carrot Cake Fruit Leather
2 cups cooked carrots (you can also substitute carrot baby food, or drained canned carrots)
3 cups unsweetened applesauce
one small can drained mandarin oranges
2 tsp pumpkin pie spice
one handful unsweetened coconut flakes

Blend all in a blender or food processor, spread on lined dehydrator sheets and then dehydrate at 135 until flexible, but not sticky. Mine were done overnight.

And for an amazing autumn fruit leather try:

Pumpkin Pie Fruit Leather
1 can pumpkin
2 bananas
2 tsp pumpkin pie spice
1/2 c. applesauce
1 whole orange or clementine (including peel)
juice of one lemon or lime

Blend all in a blender or food processor, spread on lined dehydrator sheets and then dehydrate at 135 until flexible, but not sticky.

---------------------------------------------------

Ten Essentials & Safety

I’ve been thinking a lot about safety lately. With the wildfires in Utah, and the news story of the hikers who got stuck on a short trail when they hiked to a waterfall, and the hiker last fall in the Smokies who got lost on a short hike and died, it reinforced the importance of spreading the knowledge of the ten essentials.

The Ten Essentials.

It sounds complicated. Like something you only need if you’re going deep in the wilderness, miles away from civilization, right? Or just for those Scouts really roughing it.

Wrong. Emergencies can happen ANYWHERE. Some of the hikers in Utah that got stranded were on an easy 1.9 mile hike. A trail many people hike with no supplies except a bottle of water and maybe a snack. The hikers that got stranded, however, ended up having to spend the night on the trail and hike out on a different path, all with no essentials.

Here are the Ten Essential items you should be carrying with you on hikes, and some of my tips:

Navigation (map and compass)
A trail map- we always stop at the visitor’s center at the parks we visit to pick up a trail map. I also take a picture of the maps provided on the trails just in case.
A compass is great, but only if you know how to use it. Check out these tips from the American Hiking Society on the basics. NOLS also offers great classes for more in depth work.

Sun protection (sunglasses and sunscreen)
A sun hat for your kids is also a great addition.

Insulation (extra clothing)
A light jacket if the nights get chilly, rain or wind breaker if you’re in the mountains and storms can roll in quickly.

Illumination (headlamp/flashlight)
and make sure it has working batteries!

First-aid supplies
Lots of band aids-especially if your kids go through band aids like mine do, tweezers for splinters, antibiotic cream, an epi-pen if you have anyone in the family who requires one, bug spray

Fire (waterproof matches/lighter/candles)
We always have one of these waterproof match holders in every pack we have and an extra in the car. Lightweight and waterproof!

Repair kit and tools
A knife and a strip of duct tape- wrapped around a hiking pole or water bottle are two things that are often recommended. You can fix a pair of broken shoes, broken glasses, etc with a small piece of duct tape. A small length of paracord is handy, too, in case you need to make a shelter, or make an impromptu shoelace.

Nutrition (extra food)
Self explanatory- but snacks are important, especially if you have kids! Definitely necessary in an emergency situation, but necessary in general, too. Nothing motivates and distracts kids away from their boredom or whinyness than food, so pack some extra granola bars or applesauce pouches. For hiking, I stock up on prepackaged snacks we don’t purchase a lot, to make them special- lara bars, zbars, fig bars. We also always have a couple of these in our packs- Yummy Earth organic suckers. Nothing motivates my kids back to the car like the promise of a sucker. We don’t use them EVERY hike, but they’re good to have on hand, and are a great boost when you or your kids need it.

Hydration (extra water)
Water is a necessity for all our hikes, but a small water filter is also a good idea. We have a few of these very lightweight and easy to use Lifestraws-you just dip it into water and drink through the filter like a straw. Sawyer Minis are another really good option.

Emergency shelter
This sounds complicated, but isn’t. A large tarp, a simple garbage bag, or one of these emergency blankets could provide a bit of warmth and shelter from rain if you needed it. I also recommend a whistle for every person in your family. Teach your kids to use them if they ever get separated from you. Many packs have them build into the straps, but I also recommend these. They don’t have a ball or pea, which can break or jam and render the whistle unusable.

Please don’t let these tips deter you from getting your kids outside and on a hike! It’s just like I have been telling my kids- I want you to be prepared. Better safe than sorry.

*This post contains affiliate links and we may receive commissions for the purchases made through this link at no extra cost to you.
How Do You Hike with Kids? Just Take a Deep Breath and Jump

Our two middle kids on a short nature trail near us.

I get a lot of parents asking me how I hike with kids. They say it is intimidating. They worry their kids will hate it and then they'll be stuck somewhere in the woods in misery with tantrumming kids. Or that they're just plain scared to go by themselves.

Here's my advice: Start small. If you've never taken your kids on a hike and you don't walk regularly around your neighborhood, start with a short, local nature trail. It doesn't have to be a "named" miles-long hiking trail. In fact, for safety reasons if you're a hiking novice, then this is a better choice your first few times out anyway (and I have plans for some safety tips in a future post, so check back for that topic). When our family started hiking, we maxed out at flat one mile loop trails. We frequently took .8 mile loops- in fact we often still do! Some hikes are even paved (although this hurts my knees)! Just get out there. There's no shame in tiny hikes. Everyone has to start somewhere and the more your kids hike (and you!), the further your family will be able to go. Just get out there. Start. Don't wait until your kids are the "perfect age." EVERY age is perfect! I promise.

Our two oldest girls a few years ago on a Joshua Tree National Park hike

Do your kids balk at the word hike? Do they walk when you go to the zoo, or the library, or the museum, or the park? Chances are they will be fine. Give your hikes a rebranding. Call them walks or adventures or a boogie in the woods. Do a scavenger hunt along the trail. Pick something to count. Our three year old loves finding spider webs, lichen and fungi- especially the fungus that looks like ears on the trees. Our six year old loves spotting squirrels. Our oldest loves looking for small waterfalls or water bubbling in streams and creeks. Find the blazes on the trees on your trail. Have a race to see who can get to the next one first. Be silly.

Two of my kids decided to do the mountain pose in the middle of the trail

Take breaks. Throw rocks in the stream. Turn over logs to look for bugs. Bring lots of snacks and of course plenty of water. Buy hiking-only snacks. We like luna and lara bars for our "hiking-only" snacks and my kids look forward to our snack breaks to eat the stuff I don't normally purchase. Or bake special hiking muffins. Our two oldest, Eleanore and Adelaide still talk about the time we baked muffins, left the house when it was still dark, and ate breakfast and watched the sunrise on a hike.

Hiking with babies is especially easy, and even more so if you're breastfeeding. Put the baby in a carrier, bring a diaper and wipes and go! Our babies have always spent the majority of our hikes napping. The gentle rocking of my walking puts them right to sleep.

Here are my SEVEN TIPS for HIKING WITH KIDS

1. Hike to a destination like a creek, climbing tree or waterfall. Some kids love having a destination and it gives them motivation to get there.

2. Take up geocaching- finding secret treasure boxes in the woods is just plain fun and motivating for everyone of any age!

3. Bring along a favorite stuffed animal friend for the adventure- our three year old loved introducing his stuffed turtles to landmarks on his hike:
4. Take pictures and stop for photo breaks. Everyone can look for something unique to photograph. Or just take goofy selfies.

5. Make up silly songs. We had fun making up new words to the tune of "The Bear Went Over the Mountain" a few weeks ago on a hike in the mountains.

6. Look for funny shaped leaves or collect special ones to take home for crafts. Or just try and find one as big as your head.
7. Keep an extra special snack waiting in the car to entice everyone to hike back. Sometimes the hardest part of a hike is getting back, and having suckers or gummy bears in the car can really motivate tired legs to keep going!

Just go. Pack a bag with snacks and water, put on your sneakers and go. Just get out there. It's not complicated- I promise. To steal a quote from the first Appalachian Trail book I ever read, which started my obsession: It's just a walk in the woods. Save Save Save

Stop Trying to Find Perfection

*This post is ported over from Lisa's personal blog, and is the beginning of a series of posts giving you a glimpse into our family adventure history. We look forward to sharing these stories with you.

There are so many benefits to kids (and adults!) spending lots of time in nature and the outdoors. Numerous studies highlight the developmental and emotional benefits of free exploration in nature, unplugging from electronics and slowing down. Kids, however, are still kids. We are still human. There is still whining. And meltdowns. And tween angst. And grumpy parents. Our days aren't perfect at home. They aren't perfect on hikes either. They're especially not perfect on camping trips. Sometimes circumstances get the best of us. And sometimes we're able to just push through for a bit and come out the other side successfully and happily. Last month, we took a camping trip to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to camp on Lake Superior. It was GORGEOUS.

Lake Superior has always spoken to me. I headed down to the beach every day, telling myself I would only pick up a rock if it was a special one. Five minutes later, my pockets would be bulging and my hands full. We came home with our entire small cooler filled with rocks. (Please note, if you are at Pictured Rocks National Seashore, it is illegal to take rocks.) We found the perfect campground- Lake Superior National Forest. We found the perfect campsite. Overall, we had an amazing time. We camped with my dad for the first time since my mom died, and although that aspect was really difficult, it was so nice to be able to spend that time with him camping again. The kids had a fabulous time playing on the beach, splashing in Lake Superior, making shadow puppets in the tent, gathering rocks, watching the stars, enjoying s'mores.

Here are some highlights and some of the reality behind the pictures, too. We got out of our truck to start setting up, and we were literally swarmed with giant mosquitoes. We came prepared with three different types of bug spray and citronella candles, so we sprayed ourselves up and lit the candles. We pushed through and although we got eaten up a bit, it was cool enough that we could wear long sleeves and pants to prevent anything really awful.
Not pictured is her constantly asking ALL afternoon if it was time yet to start building it. It's hard to keep my patience.

Josephine smiling in the pack and play. Not pictured is her constantly shrieking to be given more graham crackers and baby mum-mums and then throwing them over the side of the pack and play. I guess she just wanted to eat rocks and sand instead.

We found some amazing places to pick wild blueberries. Not pictured is ME panicking every time we drove over a rut in the dirt road with a giant puddle. I was so nervous we were going to get stuck somewhere with a car full of kids in the middle of nowhere.
A blurry picture of Adelaide joyfully skipping down the North Country Trail. Not pictured is that this was after my THIRD trip to the bathroom in thirty minutes because the kids each "realized" separately they needed to go every single time I returned from taking another child.

Camping with four kids is a little like childbirth. Oftentimes letting the frustrations (or pain) fall away is difficult in the moment, but the joy of a trip is there once you get past it. I'm not perfect. I get frustrated. I yell. I have to remind myself to take a deep breath. I have to censor myself in the moment. Really though, our trip was amazing. Sometimes I just need to remind myself to let the frustrations go and enjoy it. And give myself permission to fill my pockets full of rocks. They were all special, anyway.

Why Wool Socks? And even in the Summer?!

To some, the mere thought of wearing wool, especially in the humid south in the SUMMER seems ridiculous. Wool helps keeps you warm, so why would you want it in summer? Wool breathes. Where other performance fabrics only let air in and out through the pores between the stitches of the fabric, wool fabric lets air in and out through the entire fabric. This means you won't feel sweaty and clammy, and it actually helps prevent you from overheating.

Wool also helps wick moisture from your skin and allows it to evaporate away. Wool has the power to absorb 30% of it's weight in moisture before you even feel it. Perfect for rainy, humid hikes or for traversing streams. You won't need to worry about your feet getting cold as the sun goes down because wool keeps its insulating properties even when it's wet.

Wool doesn't smell! Do you have a favorite synthetic hiking shirt? Do you notice it starts to stink after a few wears, even after you wash it? Wool is naturally antimicrobial and won't hold onto sweaty odors. Who wants stinky feet to detract from their enjoyment of their adventures?!

Another great reason to choose wool is it has low flammability. Wool naturally puts itself out quickly when introduced to flames and will not melt to your skin like synthetics can.
