Newcomers on Top of Ranking at Mid Season

Røldal, Norway, February 22 2012 - After three contested stages out of six, the Swatch Freeride World Tour will host its next competition in Røldal, a hidden pearl of southwest Norway. With the four categories men and women, ski and snowboard, the world's best freeride athletes are scheduled to compete Saturday 25 February. Looking at the overall ranking, the most noticeable fact is the top five on the ski men's ranking being season wild cards or newcomers. As a young and constantly evolving sport, it is not surprising that several new athletes on the tour have been showing some consistent, top-level freeriding. Established athletes will need to step up their game to defend their coveted spots.

The The Swatch Freeride World Tour in Røldal is a new stage on the tour but has been an existing competition since 2001, as the Røldal Freeride Challenge. A Freeride World Tour Qualifier (FWQ) since 2008, Röldal still hosts a FWQ event in end of April. With the interesting terrain and great organisation it has been a popular competition in Scandinavia, attracting the very best. Top international riders like Kaj Zackrisson (SWE), Ane Enderud (NOR), Pia Widmesser (GER), Torgrim Vole (NOR), Emilien Badoux (SUI), Erik Sunnerheim (SWE) and Jaclyn Paaso (USA) have all taken victory in previous editions.

Swiss snowboarder Emilien Badoux, currently 5 ^th on the FWT ranking, won Røldal in 2010: "I am really happy to go back to Røldal for a FWT stage, meaning the level will be even higher! I don't know what face we will ride and what it will be like this time of the year but the terrain back there is really playful and I think we will see some freestyle moves and a lot of air."

Will some of the new athletes on the tour keep on charging and hold on to their high rankings or will the established riders come back strong? It is anyone's game and with a new stage of the tour it makes it even more interesting.

Aurélien Ducroz (FRA), 2011 Freeride World Champion ski, had a tough start of the season but is confident after his fourth place in Courmayeur:

"It's cool to see so many new guys pushing the sport and shaking us around a bit. But I've been preparing for the next competition. Everything feels better since Courmayeur and I feel good on my skis. It took some time to get started but I'm getting there. I don't know anything about Røldal but I'm really happy as I've never skied in Norway! It's great to have new stages on the tour and Scandinavia means big freeriding countries. I don't think the guys who previously competed here are favoured, it's our job to inspect new faces and ride them."

World Snow Day launches with great success

Sunday, 22nd January 2012 saw the inaugural FIS World Snow Day take place all around the world. 225 events organizers in 39 countries invited children, their families and the general public to enjoy the day through a variety of fun activities in and on the snow.

The Athlete Role Model program played a unique role at the first Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck. FIS was happy to have six former top athletes join the Games to interact with the youth Olympians. Ski Jumper Andreas Küttel (SUI) and Cross-Country Skier Petra Majdic (SLO) made special appearances at the Seefeld arena for the Nordic disciplines. Samppa Lajunen (FIN), a retired Nordic Combined athlete, participated in the Congress Hall's Culture and Education Program (CEP) activities. Snowboarder Nicola Thost (GER) and Freestyle Skier Shannon Happe Bahrke (USA) also participated in the CEP and visited the competitions in Kühtai whilst Marco Büchel (LIE) was in his element at the Alpine venue at Patscherkofel.

Great progress towards applying air bags to skiing

FIS and Dainese presented in Kitzbühel the initial results of the D-air® Ski project. The aim of the cooperation is to investigate the potential application of air bag technology to top-level Alpine Skiing. Specifically the current project seeks to improve the protection of athletes by applying D-air® technologies (air bag designed around the human body). The timeframe of the feasibility study extends until the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

Freestyle Skiing world mourns one of its brightest stars

The Freestyle Skiing world mourns the death of one of its brightest stars. Canadian Freestyle skier Sarah Burke succumbed to injuries 19th January 2012 suffered while training in Park City, Utah, nine days earlier. She was 29 years old.

"I would like to offer sincerest condolences from FIS to the husband, family, and friends of Sarah Burke. She was a great athlete and a pioneer for ladies' Freestyle Skiing," said FIS President Gian Franco Kasper.

Ski jumping legend Jiri Raska passed away

Jiri Raska

The Czech Republic has lost one of its most important personalities. The Czech ski jumping legend Jiri Raska died at age 70 after a long and serious illness on 20th January. At the Olympic Winter Games 1968 in Grenoble (FRA), Raska won the gold medal on the normal hill and silver on the large hill. In season 1970/71 he won the Four-Hills-Tournament.

Subaru Freeskiing World Tour Stop at Crested Butte Postponed
Event moved to March 8-11, 2012

Salt Lake City, Utah - January 25, 2012

Stop 4 of the Subaru Freeskiing World Tour at Crested Butte, CO February 8-12, is postponed until March 8-11 to allow for the highest quality competition conditions. Event organizers and Crested Butte Mountain Resort (CBMR) officials came to this decision in order to guarantee that the venue will have adequate coverage for a safe and successful event.

"We are finally receiving snow across the west, yet are forced to wait for more accumulation to get the venue at Crested Butte competition ready," says Event Director Bryan Barlow. Crested Butte received over 37 inches in the last week's storm cycle and will be in great shape for March's event.

"The latest storm has been very positive for our coverage in the extremes," says Laci Wright, events manager for CBMR. "By pushing back the date we are confident that we will have a much better venue. As always we are thrilled to have the US Extreme Freeskiing Championships return to Crested Butte."

Crested Butte will remain a five star World Tour event for the 2011-2012 season.

Freeride World Tour announces new three-year partnership with Swatch and a new global Freeride rankings system

With typical Swiss precision and impeccable timing, Swatch has signed a new three-year deal to become title partner of the Freeride World Tour. In a ground-breaking deal that will ensure six elite level Freeride events over the 2012, 2013 and 2014 seasons, Swatch confirms its commitment to the thriving action sports sector.

Swatch President Arlette-Elsa Emch says: "A passion for sport is one of the long-established pillars of the Swatch ethos. With this in mind, we are extremely proud to confirm our support of and commitment to the Freeride World Tour, as its title partner. During the next three years, working alongside the Freeride World Tour, Swatch wishes to build upon the existing excitement surrounding Action sports by increasing and promoting its significance globally, in order to enrich the experience of those participating in and those watching these amazing events."

The 2012 Swatch Freeride World Tour season will now see events in Revelstoke (Canada) and Courmayeur-Mont-Blanc (Italy) adding to the already confirmed stops in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, Røldal, Fieberbrunn and Verbier.

The Revelstoke event will also mark the next step in a rapidly evolving partnership between the Freeride World Tour organisers and American Freeskiing and Freeriding organiser Mountain Sports International (MSI). This evolution will include a co-organised event and a new global ranking system in which all results from the new Swatch Freeride World Tour, Freeride World Qualifiers, The North Face Masters of Snowboarding and Subaru Freeskiing World Tour will be included.

OLYMPIC VALLEY, Calif. — Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows are investigating the possibility of creating backcountry access gates that would permit on-snow travel between the Lake Tahoe ski resorts, officials announced Friday. During the 2011-12 winter operating season, Squaw and Alpine Meadows management, ski patrols from both resorts and the U.S. Forest Service will begin a pilot study into the idea, according to a press release. If successful, the study would result in a policy which could permit skiers and riders with specialized backcountry training and equipment to access wilderness land connecting Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows, according to the release. “We will be working with closely with our partner, the United States Forest Service, to conduct the pilot study,” said Andy Wirth, CEO of both Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows, in a statement. “With the safety of our guests and our team members as our primary concern, we will be doing our due diligence to determine whether or not backcountry access between Squaw and Alpine Meadows is a possibility.” Since Squaw and Alpine joined under common ownership this fall, both resorts can be accessed on one lift ticket or season pass for the 2011-12 winter season; shuttles will run constantly between the resorts this summer. According to the release, the boundary management policies of Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows will remain much the same as they have in previous years. With the exception of the conditions-dependent pilot study, Squaw Valley's boundary will remain closed as it has in prior years; the Alpine Meadows Ski Area boundary will be managed as it has been in the past.

The project will include route selection, potential issues relating to backcountry access during in-bounds closures, search and rescue issues and interface with private land and wilderness areas, according to the release.

“The goal of the pilot study will be to determine whether or not feasible locations for backcountry access gates exist — and if so, where the best locations would be in terms of topography and exposure,” the release reads. “The pilot study will be launched when adequate snow conditions have been reached.”

Like many of you, I have stood at the top of KT-22 and looked at Alpine Meadows thinking how incredible it would be if the two resorts were combined. The idea of combining Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows is a long time coming, but the actual transaction originated, very fittingly, on a chairlift.

It was on a spectacular California bluebird day when I happened to be riding a chairlift with Todd Chapman, President and CEO of JMA (the owners of Alpine Meadows). We were talking about what an amazing winter we were all enjoying and lamenting that we didn't have more time to get out and enjoy the snow.

The National Ski Areas Association is the trade association for ski area owners and operators. It represents 326 alpine resorts that account for more than 90 percent of the skier/snowboarder visits nationwide. Additionally, it has 400 supplier members who provide equipment, goods and services to the mountain resort industry.

NSAA analyzes and distributes ski industry statistics; produces annual conferences and trade shows; produces a bimonthly industry publication and is active in state and federal government affairs. NSAA was established in 1962 and was headquartered in Springfield, Mass. In 1989 NSAA merged with SIA (SnowSports Industries America) and moved to McLean, Va. The merger was dissolved in 1992 and NSAA was relocated to Lakewood, Colo., because of its central geographic location. NSAA is located in the same office building as the Professional Ski Instructors of America and the National Ski Patrol in Lakewood, Colo., a suburb west of Denver.

Freeride World Tour 2011 men and women skiers are tuning their powder boards in preparation for the next event of the tour. The North American Freeskiing Championships Kirkwood 2011 by Swatch, The North Face and Sierra Nevada is scheduled to take place this Saturday, 26 February, at Kirkwood ski station located just south of California's Lake Tahoe.

Has Henrik Windstedt (SWE) fully recovered from his badly bruised ribs to protect his lead against his closest competitors? Will FWT women ski leader Janette Hargin (SWE) have what it takes to continue her string of five consecutive podium appearances against North America's best skiers and the top women league of the Freeride World Tour? The Freeride World Tour is collaborating with the North American Freeskiing Championships, an exciting event featuring the top riders from North America as well as the athletes competing in the Freeride World Tour.

Weather permitting, qualifiers are set to being on Thursday, 24 February with finals scheduled for Saturday, 26 February. The Freeride World Tour athletes are automatically qualified into the finals.

The venue for the Kirkwood event is an area called The Cirque, which is a 260-meter face at the top of 2987-meter Thimble Peak. The face is heavily featured with the possibility for cliff drops of all sizes, multiple drops and fun rock hits.

Kirkwood has been getting so much snow recently that on 19 February 2011 Skiinfo.com proclaimed, "Kirkwood has received the most snowfall in the world in the past 7 days" after the resort received almost three meters in one week. This abundance of fresh snow on top of a 445cm base should provide the kind of soft landings that will allow the riders to launch big airs and throw down their best tricks.

About the Freeride World Tour

The Freeride World Tour was launched in 2008 and following three full seasons it is recognized by riders, the ski industry and the media as the pinnacle of the sport. In 2011, the best freeriders, men, women, skiers and snowboarders alike, will visit some of the world's most renowned ski resorts in pursuit of the world title.

For 2011 the men's tour has expanded from four to six FWT stops with events in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc - FRA, Engadin St Moritz - SUI, Kirkwood - USA, Sochi - RUS, Fieberbrunn AUT, and Verbier - SUI. USA Heads to Europe for World Juniors
PARK CITY, UT (Jan. 14) – The U.S. Ski Team has named 14 junior athletes to represent the USA in the 2011 World Junior Alpine Ski Championships at Crans Montana, Switzerland, Jan. 29 – Feb. 6. The selected athletes, ages 15-19, qualified based on performance results in the NorAm Cup series this season.
An important international championship for the U.S. Alpine Ski Team, the World Junior Championships acts as an indicator of the talent and depth of future World Alpine Ski Championships and Olympic Winter Games teams. The 2011 Team is strong with a variety of talent and depth including both World Junior veterans and rookies.
The men will open the Championships with a giant slalom on Sunday, Jan. 30, knocking out the technical events before clicking into their speed skis. The Team will be led by returning World Junior team members Michael Ankeny (Wayzata, MN) and Nick Daniels (Tahoe City, CA) as they head to Europe early for a series of FIS races in preparation for World Juniors.
"The idea is just to get the guys together for pace and a little racing before the event," said Men's Head World Juniors Team Coach Randy Pelkey. "The hill has a lot of rolls and blind spots and we've trained that all summer. Hopefully we'll come into Crans [Montana] with guns a blazing."
The women's team, with many young members, is focused on fundamentals as well as gaining experience in a World Championship event. The women's team will look to World Junior veteran Abby Fucigna (Hopkinton, MA) for leadership as the young group of women charge out of the gate.
"Our goals for the Austrian FIS races leading up to World Junior Championships are largely about gaining experience at a higher level of competition," said Women's Head World Juniors Team Coach Seth McCadam. "I am confident that the girls will rise to the challenge and compete on the big stage as Americans tend to do."
The World Junior Alpine Ski Championships will conclude on Feb. 5 with the women's super G.

DENVER, Colo. – January 14, 2011 – Colorado Ski Country USA (CSCUSA) and its 22 member resorts, in conjunction with the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA), have teamed up to promote National Safety Awareness Week, which will take place from January 15 – 23, 2011. When Safety Week kicks off tomorrow, member resorts across the state will host events, clinics and other activities designed to educate and remind skiers and riders of the importance of slope safety. The programs, promotions and prizes are aimed to motivate safe skiing and riding behavior while highlighting the Skier Responsibility Code and various resort safety measures.
“Although for all our members, every week is safety week, this week adds extra emphasis to the high priority resorts place on this issue,” said Melanie Mills, CSCUSA president and CEO. “It’s a chance for resorts to highlight that skiing and snowboarding responsibly is the best way for all to enjoy their day on the slopes.” CSCUSA member resorts have many safety measures in place from snow safety and avalanche awareness to educating guests about helmet use, to reminders about proper hydration and sunscreen use, to slow skiing zones. But it is the responsible behavior of skiers and riders that is crucial to slope safety. Knowing the nationally recognized Your Responsibility Code is central to skier and rider responsibility. Referred to simply as The Code, it is comprised of seven principles that collectively outline on-mountain skier etiquette and safe skiing practices.

•Always stay in control, and be able to stop or avoid other people or objects.
•People ahead of you have the right of way. It is your responsibility to avoid them.
•You must not stop where you obstruct a trail, or are not visible from above.
•Whenever starting downhill or merging into a trail, look uphill and yield to others.
•Always use devices to help prevent runaway equipment.
•Observe all posted signs and warnings. Keep off closed trails and out of closed areas. •Prior to using any lift, you must have the knowledge and ability to load, ride and unload safely.
On Wednesday from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m., guests can become knowledgeable on the topic by attending “Avalanche Awareness and Boundary Policies,” presented by the Winter Park Ski Patrol in the Board Room in upper Balcony House building. Mad River Glen We're Back and it's Snowing Again!!! After the 18" of fluff that fell here on Sunday night we have already picked up 3" toady and nearly a foot is expected to fall throughout the day and into this evening. You got to love these perpetual power days when your tracks fill in each and every run. T he skiing should improve dramatically with every flake and not a moment too soon as we approach the big MLK holiday weekend. We have been enjoying remarkably diverse skiing conditions of late with amazing powder turns in some places and wind scoured in others. Hopefully more will be blowing ON the trails this time around. Check out some cool video from "Re-opening Day"! We will re-open The Single as soon as we possibly can. With all this "blower snow" we received there really are some sweet turns to be had out there, it's your job to find them. The forecast looks great calling for even more snow to arrive this coming weekend. Looks like we are back in business folks.

TAHOE CITY, Calif. — Placer County authorities say a military helicopter equipped with forward looking infrared technology was scheduled to join the search for a woman who disappeared while snowboarding at a Lake Tahoe-area resort.
Sheriff's Capt. Jeff Ausnow says the helicopter would have about 2 1/2 hours in the air once it began its search late Wednesday for 25-year-old Shawnte Marie Willis.
Ausnow says if the helicopter search fails to find Willis during the night, ground crews will resume searching in the morning.
Willis was reported missing Tuesday afternoon after she became separated from her friends at Alpine Meadows Ski Resort.
Willis was wearing a pink helmet, tan and camouflage jacket, and gray snowboard pants. She was a guest at the resort and was last seen snowboarding through ski boundary signs near the top of an advanced slope accessible by chair lifts
Willis' family in Humboldt County told the Sacramento Bee that she's a strong athlete who works as a ski instructor. But her cousin, Don Hubbs, says he's worried that Willis' epilepsy could be triggered by the extreme stress of being lost in the snow.
......Authorities say the snowboarder who went missing on Tuesday has been found. They have not released any details yet, but will have a press conference on Thursday afternoon

Sugarloaf - Maine
CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine — State inspectors are being sent to a ski lift that malfunction and sent people at a Maine resort plummeting as far as 30 feet to the snow.
Officials at the Sugarloaf resort say that there are about six injuries from Tuesday's accident and that patrols evacuated the lift. A state official says the lift was properly inspected and licensed.

Sugarloaf spokesman Ethan Austin says five chairs came down. The resort says none of the injuries appear to be life threatening

Star values are based on a number of criteria including the quality of the competition face, field of riders and prize-money. Riders with the most points at the end of the season will earn a spot on the prestigious Freeride World Tour.

Junior Competitions
In an effort to ensure young riders learn the best skills and progress in the safest environment possible, the Freeride World Tour in partnership with Dakine, has introduced a new concept featuring three Junior Competitions. They will be held parallel to the FWT events in Chamonix Mont-Blanc (FRA), Fieberbrunn (AUT), and Verbier (CH). If bad weather or time restrictions interfere, the Junior competition will be replaced by freeride and safety clinics taught by mountain guides and professional freeride skiers and snowboarders. The same judging criteria used for the FWT will be used for the Junior Competitions. Each event will be a distinct, unconnected event with no overall champion in 2011.
The Junior events will emphasise security and accident prevention. Venues for these competitions are carefully chosen to be challenging but not dangerous.

Verbier, Switzerland – December 7, 2010 – For 2011, the Freeride World Tour (FWT) has continued to streamline its judging system to produce the fairest, most consistent and non-restrictive freeride judging system to date. This dynamic, constantly evolving system is a critical element in evaluating the world’s best skiers and snowboarders as they continue to push the boundaries of freeriding at each and every FWT contest.

As the level of freeride skiing and snowboarding continues to progress so does the judging system. On the Freeride World Tour multiple judges score competitors individually and their scores are averaged in order to be as fair as possible. The judging method allows any style to win, an important factor for the athletes as they breed from various backgrounds like freestyle, alpine racing, boarder cross, skiers cross or pure freeriding.

Judges Training A complex judging manual, which has been developed jointly by the Freeride World Tour organisers, judges, and competing athletes, serves as the basis for the training method for FWT judges. The objectives are to continually improve the overall quality and coherence of the Freeride World Tour and Freeride World Qualifiers’ judging systems. In order to become a FWT certified judge, potential candidates must complete the training program, pass a series of tests, judge past years’ competition runs and do real time judging at competitions.

Judging Judging is based on overall impression, which takes into account the athlete’s line, fluidity, control, jumps and crashes. This split criteria mentality is key to determining the best overall impression of the run. Riders are scored on a scale with 100 possible scores and judges are trained to use the full scale when evaluating runs.

Prior to the competition, judges check the competition faces themselves and analyse possible lines and snow conditions while imagining what could be a very difficult or a safe line on the face.

Henrik Windstedt (SWE), Freeride World Champion 2008 and 3rd 2010 comments: "The judges have one of the most difficult jobs on the Freeride World Tour because the whole event is based on their ability to expertly evaluate each rider's run. The fact that all of the judges have been professional freeriders and the thorough training they go through in able to qualify to be a judge is the key to the great job they do."

Neveplast has completed the installation of a ski slope and two Tubby slopes at Sila, in the Calabrian mountains in the Appennines range. The ski slopes, which had been ordered by the Scalise Sport Group Srl which runs the centre and other leisure activities in the region, will bring skiing 365 days a year to the area.

The Neveplast Np30 and the Tubby slopes will allow for winter sports year round, including in winter if there is not enough natural snowfall.
The ski slope has been equipped for use by the area’s ski school also that ski teaching can continue year round.

Mammoth Mountain, CA – Thanks to incredible snowfall throughout the 2009/10 winter season, Mammoth Mountain will extend its winter operations for daily skiing and riding to July 4, 2010.
Mammoth Mountain has received over 41 feet (493 inches) of snowfall this season including more than three feet of snow in the first week of April. With a current base depth of 11 feet to 15 feet of snow, Mammoth is experiencing the best snowfall season since the record breaking 2005/06 season, when over 50 feet of snow fell on the mountain.
Long known for snow seasons that stretch well into spring and summer, this will mark the 11th time that Mammoth Mountain has been open for skiing and riding on the Fourth of July within the last 31 years of operation.
Mammoth Mountain’s high alpine bowls offer some of the best spring riding available anywhere. Construction will start soon on a high altitude spring terrain park featuring jumps, rails and a 22-foot Super Duper Pipe accessible from Face Lift Express

It represents 326 alpine resorts that account for more than 90 percent of the skier/snowboarder visits nationwide. Additionally, it has 400 supplier members who provide equipment, goods and services to the mountain resort industry.

NSAA analyzes and distributes ski industry statistics; produces annual conferences and trade shows; produces a bimonthly industry publication and is active in state and federal government affairs. The association also provides educational programs and employee training materials on industry issues including OSHA, ADA and NEPA regulations and compliance; environmental laws and regulations; state regulatory requirements; aerial tramway safety; and resort operations and guest service.

NSAA was established in 1962 and was headquartered in Springfield, Mass. In 1989 NSAA merged with SIA (SnowSports Industries America) and moved to McLean, Va. White Pass, Washington, Doubles in Size White Pass, located 55 miles west of Yakima, Washington, first started off in 1952 with four rope tows. It is a small low-key, family-type mountain with a few steeps great gladed terrain and a ton of history that includes three generations of the Mahre family. “Fridays are your best bet for good snow—all week to snow and no crowds to ski it off,” says Day Lodge Manager and 31-year White Pass Local Louie Vimont. But what White Pass lacks are long rolling intermediate to expert on- and off-piste terrain. This will all change next season after the completion of a 767-acre expansion project that will bring the total size of White Pass to 1,402 acres and increase its vert by 600 to 2050 feet. Two new lifts, Chairs 5 and 6, and a 3,000-square-foot mid-mountain lodge are under construction in the Hogback Basin southwest of the current terrain. Chair 5 is a fixed-grip quad that rises 600 vertical feet. It is the second from right in the above map. Chair 6 is a detachable quad that rises 900 vertical feet. It is the far right lift on the above map. The expansion will spread out skier traffic, open up many long rolling bowls, natural and gladed runs, and cruisers, as well as provide easy access to world-class backcountry terrain in the Goat Rocks Wilderness.

The Stubai Glacier represents one of the most extensive all-year-skiing areas in the Eastern Alps with 68 miles of slopes and off-slope tracks of all levels of difficulty and a 2.8 mile high altitude cross country slope.

The glacier ski area is complemented by the lifts on Neustift`s local fun mountain, the “Elfer” ski resort. Neustift is known far and wide for its beautiful ski tours. You can also use more than 2,8 miles of cross country tracks, wander along two winter hiking trails or enjoy a ride on one of the numerous natural tobbogan runs, among them the longest natural tobobban run in Austria.

Annual Sugar Slalom
April 3 & 4, 2010
Celebrate spring on skis. Join the fun in the MMSC Sugar Slalom. Held annually in Stowe since 1940, the Sugar Slalom is the most recognized alpine ski race event in the region. Open to USSA licensed racers ages 9 and up, this race attracts some of the best talent in the East and is a great opportunity to lower USSA points late in the season. On day two, the Sugar Slalom is open to anyone over 21 years of age wishing to be a part in the weekend’s festivities.
Originating as a celebration of the arrival of spring and the tapping of maple trees, the Sugar Slalom is held in a Mardi gras atmosphere complete with music, barbecue on the hill, fantastic ski racing and festive costumes. To top it all, the race also features a unique Vermont treat - maple syrup on snow, donuts and pickles at the finish.

Stowe’s 56th annual non-denominational Sunrise Service will be held at the top of the Gondola at Stowe Mountain Resort. The service will start at 6:26am promptly. Complimentary Gondola Rides Open to the Public 4:50am - 5:50am, Sunrise Service begins: 6:26am. Complimentary coffee and refreshments will be served at the top of the Gondola. A children's Easter Egg Hunt will occur in the Spruce Plaza at 9am followed by Easter egg painting in the Spruce Camp Base Lodge on the second floor at 11am. Patscherkofel - Austria - previous 1976 Olympic site
Innsbruck hosted the Olympic Winter Games twice and Igls as the venue for the men’s downhill was the focus of the world’s interest. Not only the Olympic winners Franz Klammer and Egon Zimmermann love the runs on the Patscherkofel, also beginners and advanced skiers are fascinated by this beautiful mountain.

Already in the year 1910 one wanted to establish an aerial ropeway of Igls on the Innsbrucker "house mountain" to Patscherkofel. As main backers the owner of the Adolf room, the planning company Heckel from Saarbruecken, the electricity company Nuernberg and the city Innsbruck drew hotel "Iglerhof". Although the route was fixed and the financial means were available, the execution bureaucracy dragging at that time, following Balkans confusions 1912/13 and that finally fell 1. World war to the victim. Individual attempts at revival of the building after the war failed however and only the establishment of an action committee in the year 1926 with seat in Igls meant the genuine stimulus for the entgueltigen building of this aerial ropeway. The action committee, in the special one the already aforementioned KR room, Leo Handl, Franz Eiler, the municipality Igls, and the municipality Schwaz, procured the necessary capital of 1.7 million Schilling (? 123.000, -) and the establishment of the "Patscherkofel Drahtseilbahn AG" followed.

The route was again specified. Original valley station variants were among other things the stations Igls and Lansersee, the Schwellerkapellle, the meadow beside the nursing center u.a.m. On 15 May 1927 the first cut of the spade took place for the building of the necessary material express course and on 14 April 1928 could the Patscherkofel - aerial ropeway already solemnly be opened. During the building arisen unexpected difficulties foundation digging, basic separations, high voltage underpasses etc. caused finally an increase of the building sum on more than the double (approx. S 3.6 millions /? 260.000, -). The municipality Schwaz had to carry out to 1978 repayments, which enstanden from the obligations entered at that time were. By in the year 1938 in strength the stepped other legal regulations the Patscherkofelbahn had to 31.12.1940 from the national possession to be sold. Thus enstand the pool with the Innsbrucker transporting enterprises AG, up to then "local railway Innsbruck i.T. AG ". It represents 326 alpine resorts that account for more than 90 percent of the skier/snowboarder visits nationwide. Additionally, it has 400 supplier members who provide equipment, goods and services to the mountain resort industry.

NSAA analyzes and distributes ski industry statistics; produces annual conferences and trade shows; produces a bimonthly industry publication and is active in state and federal government affairs. The association also provides educational programs and employee training materials on industry issues including OSHA, ADA and NEPA regulations and compliance; environmental laws and regulations; state regulatory requirements; aerial tramway safety; and resort operations and guest service.

Freeskiing Champion CR Johnson, dies in Squaw Valley Accident
Squaw Valley has confirmed that freeskier CR Johnson died Wednesday afternoon while skiing.

Twenty-six-year-old C.R. Johnson was killed Wednesday while skiing at Squaw Valley, Calif. According to a statement issued by the resort, the Lake Tahoe native caught an edge on exposed rocks while entering the Light Towers area above the Cornice II lift. He fell through rocks before coming to a rest several hundred yards below the entry. Ski Patrol were on the scene within minutes, but efforts to revive Johnson failed. He was reportedly wearing a helmet.

Johnson was known in recent years for his inspiring return to skiing after a traumatic brain injury that he suffered in December of 2005. The injury, sustained when another skier accidentally landed on him during a run, left him in a coma for 10 days. He spent 34 days in the hospital and several months in rehab, but was back on snow by the end of that winter. He made steady progress in recent seasons and this winter finished third in the prestigious Red Bull Linecatcher event in the French Alps.

But long before his injury, Johnson was known as a park and pipe skiing prodigy who helped redefine the sport in the first years of this century by proving what was possible on twin tip skis. He was a two-time Winter X Games medalist, earning bronze in the 2001 Big Air and silver in the 2002 slopestyle. But those years were simply a warm up for the next three. Between 2003 and 2005, Johnson consistently broke the barrier for how high skiers could go in a halfpipe. His 2003 Winter X duel with Candide Thovex was a defining moment for the young discipline, with Johnson throwing a 900 that stood as a benchmark for several years. And while such huge air usually cost him a result (he never finished higher than fourth in the Winter X halfpipe, due to crashes), his influence on today's halfpipe skiers was greater than any medal could bestow.

"He's the defining person who put halfpipe skiing on the map," says two-time Winter X SuperPipe champion Simon Dumont. "He's a huge part of how halfpipe skiing is right now."

Johnson was also instrumental in bringing park-style skiing to the backcountry. His film segments in the Tanner Hall/Eric Iberg films "WSKI106" and "Pop Yer Bottlez," in which he seamlessly added off-axis rotations to airs off big cliffs and toyed with switch takeoffs and landings in powder, are considered early prototypes in the evolution of freestyle backcountry skiing. His result at this year's Linecatcher was seen by many as a return to that pre-injury form.

Freeride World Tour - THE TRAM FACE

Squaw Valley, USA – February 23, 2010 – The pressure is rising with two out of four competitions already completed of the Freeride World Tour 2010. By the third tour stage, the leading candidates for the Freeride World Champion title will be looking to make a major impression on the infamous Tram Face in Squaw Valley USA, a face that has never officially been ridden before.

Strictly illegal to ski, the Tram Face is being opened specifically for the Freeride World Tour competition. Its steep and seemingly un-skiable pitch, permanent closure, and tantalizing location in perfect view from Squaw Valley’s Village and base area, have made it a coveted descent among the strong local freeride community. Several of the top American riders are from Squaw Valley (Jeremy Jones, J.T. Holmes, Tim Dutton, Cody Townsend, Elyse Saugstad, Will Brommelsiek) and will clearly be aiming for victory on home snow and score important points on the FWT ranking.

Conditions are great this year with the El Nino weather pattern bringing huge amount of snow to the Californian resort, and history will be made when the world’s best freeriders will get the chance to challenge the steep rock face.

The Tram Face looks playful with steep sections, nice jumps and many technical lines. I think the riders will provide a great show. Leading the FWT Ranking gives me a lot of confidence and I am still super happy about my win in Fieberbunn, but I also know, that it can change very quickly, so I just focus on the next event, trying to do my best and having lots of fun.”

Hope on the Slopes (HOTS) is a ski and snowboard event benefiting the American Cancer Society (ACS). First conducted at the White Pass Ski Area in 2004, the event has grown to three Washington mountains for 2010 including Stevens Pass, White Pass and Crystal Mountain. White Pass H.O.T.S. March 13th 10 am - March 14th 10 am How does Hope on the Slopes raise money for ACS? HOTS participants ask supporters to make donations to ACS in recognition of their commitment to ski as many vertical feet as they can over the course of the event. All fundraising is done via the HOTS website where participants establish a personal fundraising web page to share their message and show their progress.
