Stingers lose to rival McGill

Concordia gives up 13 points in last 15 minutes

For most of Sunday afternoon’s game between crosstown rivals Concordia and McGill, it looked like it was going to be a relatively even match. Unfortunately for the Stingers, a late game meltdown saw the Redmen pick up the coveted ‘W.’

McGill would beat the Stingers 21-13, but 13 of the Redmen points came with only 15 minutes remaining in the game.

“It’s frustrating to go into the second half leading and not to have (the lead) taken away, but to give it away,” said Stingers’ prop Jimmy Bang.

“We gave them the benefit of the doubt and it ended up costing us,” said fly-half Kevin Elliott. “If we stuck to our game plan we could have executed a little bit better and come out on top.”

Elliott would score Concordia’s only try in the first half by taking advantage of a fumbled ball that he picked up on the run. He did so with such a pace that left all defenders trailing in his path to the score.

In the 26th minute of the second half, a scrum was won by the Stingers, but a seemingly routine zone clearing kick simply did not have enough juice on it. As a result, the ball would fall into the hands of a Redmen winger. McGill would maintain possession and eventually extend the ball out to the far winger who ran in for a game tying try.

“It was a called play, we drove for that penalty on a called play and that was thrown away,” said Stingers’ head coach Clive Gibson.

Soon after conceding the game-tying try, Concordia had taken control of the ball inside the opposition’s 22. Concordia was putting a tremendous amount of pressure on McGill in the zone and eventually caused the Redmen to take a penalty 10 yards outside of the try-zone.

However, rather than kick for points, which would have given Concordia a three-point lead and possession of the ball, an attempt was made to rush the ball in for a try. But the Stingers would come up short and come away from the possession with no points, leaving the door open for the Redmen comeback.

Just as quickly as the try was denied, the ball was brought into the Stingers’ zone through a sequence of gaps hit by the McGill offence. The possession was concluded with a try scored by McGill, giving them a lead they would not let go of. McGill would later add a penalty kick putting the game firmly out of reach.

All Blacks beat Tonga in opening match of Rugby World Cup 2011

The Rugby World Cup 2011 kicked off in New Zealand with a fantastic opening ceremony, followed by the host nation beating a determined Tonga 41-10 at Eden Park in Auckland. Fullback Israel Dagg scored the opening try of the tournament.

The All Blacks came out looking slick as their talented backs turned it on, scoring fantastic tries as they ran circles around the hapless Tongans in the first half. The second wasn't quite as good, as Tonga came back into the game with a pick and drive tactic that kept possesion away from the home side.

Israel Dagg and Richard Kahui ended up with two tries a piece though, while Jerome Kaino and Ma'a Nonu scored in the second half. Nonu and center partner Sonny Bill Williams were lethal, Williams in particular, as he offloaded in the tackle with ease, pulling off some incredible passes.

Tonga did score a try of their own however as Alisona Taumalolo went over after a period of sustained pressure resulted in a well taken, and well deserved, try for the big front rower.

While the performance of the All Blacks in the first half will have sent a message to the rest of their opposition, and put coach Graham Henry in a tight position when it comes to future selections, their second half showing was perhaps a little warning sign. They did take the foot off the gas, but they'll soon face tighter challenges and need to be able to adapt their game, and learn how to win ugly.

All in all it was a great win however, and a brilliant display of the kind of ability that exists within the squad, with whoever gets selected showing that they're capable of stepping up and turning things on when needed.

Ex-NHL Enforcer Belak's death was Suicide

Retired NHL player Wade Belak's death this week was a result of suicide, multiple media reports said Thursday morning, citing police sources.

Toronto police, however, have yet to officially confirm the cause of death.

Const. Tony Vella would only say Thursday that foul play is not suspected in the death.

Belak was found dead in a Toronto hotel complex Wednesday. He was 35.

Belak retired this year after 15 seasons as a pro-hockey enforcer who played for the Colorado Avalanche, Calgary Flames, Toronto Maple Leafs, Florida Panthers and Nashville Predators.

He had recently been named as a cast member for the third season of the CBC's Battle of the Blades TV series, which matches hockey players and figure skaters, and was preparing for a new job as a television analyst with the Predators.

Belak was married with two children, Andie and Alex.

Belak grew up in North Battleford, Sask. He joined the league as a first-round draft pick, selected 12th overall by the Quebec Nordiques in the 1994 NHL entry draft.

Belak is the third NHL enforcer to die in the past few months.

New York Rangers heavyweight Derek Boogaard passed away in May from to an accidental mix of alcohol and painkillers, while Winnipeg Jets forward Rick Rypien was found dead earlier this month from an apparent suicide.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman released a statement this week saying Belak “competed to the utmost every minute of his NHL career,” and NHL Players' Association executive director Don Fehr said Belak's “affable personality made him popular with teammates, fans and media, and he was a hardworking, respected member of the association.”

THE U-19 CRC ENDS WITH BIG SCORES AND BIG COMEBACKS

The inaugural Under-19 Canadian Rugby Championship concluded with a bang as one team continued to exert its dominance while the new kids on the block proved they belong on the big stage.

The early game on the afternoon saw the Ontario Blues come out hard, fast and strong to shatter the Atlantic Rock 81-3.

The Blues's Cam Stone scored a try at the two-minute mark to set the tone for the bout. The No. 8 showed off his speed and skill in notching the first of his three tries on the day.

At the half, the Ontarians were having their way with the Atlantic side, sporting a commanding 31-0 lead. The Rock were able to break the shutout in the 38th minute with James Mitchell making good on a penalty kick.

From there, the Blues returned to their scoring ways with a barrage of tries and big plays. Andrew Ferguson concluded his strong tournament by adding a try and a whopping seven conversions in the match.

In the final minute of play, wing Rob Finch came through with his third try of the day to give his side 50 points in the second half.

The concluding match of the U-19 CRC, featuring the Lower Canada Voyageurs and the Prairie Wolf Pack, began in very much the same way as centre Nik Chyzenski scored in the 2nd minute to put the Voyageurs ahead.

It was then the Wolf Pack who bounced back with tries from wing Josh Hart and fullback Dave Evans. A Pack penalty kick from Evans was followed by Chyzenski's second try to bring Lower Canada to within 7 points at the halfway mark.

The Voyageurs came out with a determined and concerted effort to start the second half. A quick try from hooker Billy Shaw and a penalty from Thomas Hindle propelled the Quebec and Eastern Ontario side to an 18-17 lead.

The final 10 minutes demonstrated that the hard work put in by coaches John Lavery, Andy Plimer and Greg Thaggard was paying off for the Voyageurs squad as their team put together an impressive display to secure the victory.

Three tries, including two from Broeghan Carrol, blew the game wide open and the Voyageurs came away with a win that, for the majority of the match, was much closer than the 37-17 final score would indicate.

The tournament's three days of competition saw the Blues go a perfect 3-0 to further their strong reputation, but it also brought about the emergence of a tenacious Voyageurs squad that finished 2-1.

A tough Wolf Pack squad ended with a 1-2 record, while the Rock finished without a victory, despite three hotly-contested battles.

The first U-19 CRC tournament saw some thrilling matches and big performances from some of the country's best young rugby players. National U-20 Men/Academy Coach Mike Shelley will have plenty to think about as he continues to envision his 2012 national U-20 team.

U19 CRC TOURNAMENT PRESENTS OPPORTUNITY FOR A NEW REGION

Rugby Canada's initiative to hold an under 19 CRC-style tournament in early August, as a selection tool for the 2012 national U20 squad, has presented an opportunity for the formation of a new rugby region. Rugby Quebec and the Eastern Ontario Rugby Union have teamed up to form a fifth national region for the tournament, and will be known as the Lower Canada Voyageurs.

They will play against the Prairie Wolf Pack, Atlantic Rock and Ontario Blues in the inaugural competition. A round-robin format will be played on the 10th, 11th and 13th of August in Montreal at the home field of the Montreal Irish RFC.

The voyageurs were mostly French Canadian paddlers who worked the waterways of Lower Canada trading goods for furs with the Native American population. History shows that they helped to open up this part of the country in the late 1700’s and early 1800's.

'The voyageurs were known for their toughness, endurance and work ethic, so it was a natural choice to name this new team after such favourable traits,' stated Steve MacNeil, EORU President. 'We are very excited about the formation of this new region and we are hoping that it lays the groundwork for a senior men’s equivalent sometime in the near future.' MacNeil concluded.

Pascal Foucault, FRQ President, is also very enthused about the new set up. 'The timing couldn't be better in our opinion. As of this year, the FRQ and EORU teams compete against each other at the senior level, so the formation of this team is the next logical step. Both unions are hugely in favour of this relationship becoming stronger, both in our domestic and regional elite rugby,’ stated Foucault.

The Lower Canada Voyageurs will wear the colours green for Eastern Ontario, white for Quebec and red to represent the hat and sash worn by the original voyageurs. These colours are also reflected in the team's new logo.

The team is being coached by John Lavery (FRQ), Andrew Plimer (FRQ) and Greg Thaggard (EORU), and managed by John Weller. The squad will consist of 26 players and will be captained by Ottawa's Billy Shaw.
