List of where you can obtain free low energy bulbs for your home.

To get one you need to be either:

Age 70 years or older

Receive any of these benefits:

Housing or Council Tax Benefit

Jobseeker’s Allowance

Child Tax Credit

Working Tax Credit

Industrial or War Disablement Pension

Pension Credit

Income Support

Apply for free bulbs on this site: http://www.eaga.com/freeproducts/index.html

If you qualify for any of the benefits listed above, contact you local council office or information centers and ask for free low energy bulbs.

Another way is to contact your energy provider and ask for some free ones to cut carbon output. Call your electricity company and they should be happy to help you out.

If you can’t get hold of free ones, consider your local supermarket which should have some decent low-cost ones. They normally cost around 99p each because they are subsidized by government.

If you want the same level of light you’re used to, the wattage of these compact fluorescent light bulbs is very important.

As a guide, to get the same amount of light as a 100 Watt bulb, you will need at least a 20W – 25W energy saving bulb.

I was looking through a book about a very old Scottish castle on the edge of Loch Ness.

Skimming through the pages, I was looking at the hand drawn illustrations and captions depicting how they thought the inhabitants of this old castle used to dress like and what they did centuries ago.

The castle drawing was cut away at the side showing how burning fire wood heated the various rooms and levels within which people are doing their thing.

That’s when it occurred to me! Back in those days, hundreds of years ago, resources seemed limitless only limited by how fast people could harvest them.

When I was a kid growing up in the 1980′s, I remember seeing fire burn and even playing with it, much to the terror of my family. It seemed too good to be true… how can fire be so warm, so powerful and so beautiful… What is the catch? (apart from burning skin and back breaking work chopping wood)

I was told there is no catch, and so was pretty much everyone in the world.

- Now I don’t know if you have ever got anything for ‘free’ in your life as most would agree that nothing is truly ‘free’. You’ve got to do something to get something, right?

Well it now seems that burning fire wood in that castle has really caught on in a big way, and now that everyone is doing it, burning coal, oil and gas, it no longer has no consequences.

That free, powerful and amazing, flaming fire has a cost.

What I’m trying to say is , you can’t get something for nothing. This includes generating energy. There are consequences and something of a negative effect in producing carbon dioxide in such large amounts that Earth’s eco-systems can no longer keep up with.

Fire is not free any more and really, it never was, sorry. Great idea though! just a bit of an out-dated one.

Electron-Stimulated Luminescence (ESL) is an entirely new efficient lighting technology being developed by a start-up company called Vu1.

ESL lighting is expected to be an alternative to LED, CFL and old fashioned incandescent bulbs.

ESL ‘bulbs’ use accelerated electrons to excite phosphor coated on the surface to produce light. Working in exactly the same way as an old cathode ray tube TV.

They are claimed to create the same light quality as an incandescent bulb with the benefit of saving energy.

ESL technology can be used in existing light bulb designs so there may be no need to shut down those old incandescent factories just yet.

Vu1′s initial plan is to introduce ESL reflector bulbs, spotlight bulbs and floodlights often used as practical/decorative lighting around the home.

Here are a few quick tips on ways your employer or your own business can save energy and cut carbon emissions:

Automatic lighting – turn on when you are in range using light sensors, turn off when no-one is around.

Fluorescent tube lighting and CFL bulbs - save up to 80% of the electricity consumption.

Recycle everything – the energy saved by recycling an aluminium can, instead of making the aluminium from scratch, is enough to power a TV for roughly 3 hours.

Turn off unused computer monitors – the computer ‘sleep’ state or standby function still uses power. Turning off at the mains is the best way.

Turn off everything from the mains plug/switch – when going home, almost everything in an office can be turned off. Printers, photocopiers, coffee machines, vending machines, projectors, computers, almost anything that is plugged into the mains can be unplugged! Everything except essential systems of course. There will be a noticeable benefit on the electricity bill and it will only take a couple of minutes at the start and end of each day.

Suggest these tips and anything else you can think of to your manager/employer. It is their Corporate Social Responsibility to do something about it!

They have a habit of saying they will look into it then forgetting it. So just remind them every so often, they will get it in the end.
