The core of new Glow services will be an authentication service, the mechanism by which users can gain access to integrated service applications and hosted applications and content. Only users who are approved for a Glow account will be able to access these tools and services.

Suppliers from Lot 2 of the Scottish Government IT Managed Services Framework have been invited to take part in a “Discovery Day” on 29 February 2012. The discovery day will help ensure that suppliers are fully briefed on the technical and operational requirements prior to choosing whether to compete for this important Government contract.

There’s a whole host of us on Engage, from parents and teachers to academics and policy makers – and these basic labels don’t cover the half of it (not to mention that they aren’t mutually exclusive!)

All week long we’re seeing useful, interesting and sometimes inspiring things around learning, education and early years on the web and sometimes you tweet these at us.

In the past they might have made it into a “Best of The Web” bit in our newsletter but we thought it’s maybe time to share them a bit wider (though you’re still very welcome to sign up for the newsletter).

RECOMMENDED THIS WEEK:
- Susie Braham from the Scottish Government shared the following:
” Handy survey tool, free version is great for educationalists and beyond http://www.surveygizmo.com/”

Want some inspiration? Last week:

The statement from ADES, SQA, the National Parent Forum of Scotland, Education Scotland and the Scottish Government reads as follows:

“ADES, Education Scotland, SQA, The National Parent Forum of Scotland and the Scottish Government would like to take this opportunity to reaffirm their support for Curriculum for Excellence and the opportunities it offers to improve outcomes for Scotland’s children and young people. Parents should be reassured that the development of qualifications which reflect the new curriculum is on track and that the new qualifications will be introduced on schedule for the current S2 cohort of pupils in 2013/14. Schools across the country are making good progress with Curriculum for Excellence and we are confident that parents and professionals will remain focussed on meeting the learning needs of children and young people as their top priority.”

You can find my interim report here.

The interim report sets out four questions – answering these is the key task of Phase 2 of the Review. I’ve set up a small working group to help me do this. You can see the membership of this group and minutes of their first two meetings have been published here.

An important part of the work for Phase 2 of the Review is gathering evidence that will help to answer the issues raised by the four questions. We plan to do this in a number of ways, including routes that give as many people as possible the opportunity to engage directly with the Review and the issues I am considering. I’m pleased to announce that our Call for Evidence – which allows individuals and organisations to answer a series of questions that will help me in my work – is now live on our website.

The Call for Evidence is open from Monday, February 13 until 11pm on Friday, March 16, 2012 and I am keen to hear from as many individuals and organisations as possible during this time. Further information on this, including the questionnaire and steps for completion, can be found on our website.

If you have any queries on the Call for Evidence, please feel free to contact one of the Doran Review team either by emailing doranreview@scotland.gsi.gov.uk or calling 0131 244 7139.

Further opportunities for getting involved in the Review will be publicised through the website in the coming months, so please keep an eye out for these at www.doranreview.org

Scotland is among the first of over 65 different countries across the world taking part in this year’s assessment.
There’s a whole host of us on Engage, from parents and teachers to academics and policy makers – and these basic labels don’t cover the half of it (not to mention that they aren’t mutually exclusive!).

All week long we’re seeing useful, interesting and sometimes inspiring things around learning, education and early years on the web, and sometimes you tweet these at us.

In the past some of them have previously made it into a “Best of The Web” bit in our newsletter but we thought it’s maybe time to share them a bit wider (though you’re still very welcome to sign up for our newsletter).

An update on how the figures relate to teacher employment from the Cabinet Secretary.

I am pleased to see yet another good set of monthly Jobseeker’s Allowance figures relating to teachers. The figures for January demonstrate that the now long-established trend of falling claimant numbers is continuing.

These latest figures show that in January 2012 there were 200 claimants in Scotland looking for jobs as teachers – less than last month (210) and less than in January last year (295)

This is the seventeenth consecutive month in which the number of claimants is fewer than in the same month of the previous year. This is also the ninth consecutive month in which the number of claimants is fewer than in the same month in each of the last two years and for the fifth consecutive month the number of claimants is fewer than in the same month in each of the last three years.

I absolutely understand that that these figures do not represent a straight count of unemployed teachers but the length and direction of the trend are absolutely convincing.

I am on record as having said that teacher unemployment used to cause me sleepless nights. But the steps we have taken to cut student teacher intake targets in 2009, 2010 and 2011 are clearly having an effect and that is good news. The claimant count peaked in August 2010 and has been falling, year on year, since that time.

These figures also confirm that teacher unemployment in Scotland continues to run at a considerably lower level than in any other country in the UK. In Scotland 3.8 teachers per thousand teachers in the workforce were claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance in January compared with: 12.2 in England; 13.7 in Wales and 21.3 in Northern Ireland.
