we're also planning a lunchtime afternoon stage for the venue too...

we were dreaming...

2015-09-30T02:48:00.001-07:00

so last night we decided that we would move out of the imperial in october.

we have lots of other opportunities available to us for community engagement which have emerged over the summer which include the development of a new community venue with great orme brewery llandudno, our regular artist networking gatherings, and the development of a fringe venue through conwy feast [to start this year].

in terms of our 'on the ground' contact in colwyn bay we wanted to pursue any possibilities of hosting an afternoon space once a week somewhere in the town which could include us hosting CAB and a drop in social. we wondered whether anyone might know anywhere that may be able to help us out with this?

in term's of our 'artistic community' we feel we have naturally become more of a 'collective' which will materialise as we pop-up in various venues throughout the year to host art exhibitions, family meals, gatherings, networking meetings, gigs etc. non of this needs to have the pressure and expense of a full time building. we are, if you like, a 'hub' which with will gather around specific events throughout the year.

thanks for everybody's hard work and determination to bring us this far. we are particularly thankful to trace and ewart for their tenacity and compassionate management of the imperial venue over the last couple of years. its been an award winning venture that will live on in the memory for ever. and we look excitedly towards the next chapter.

we ended last nights meal with a recording of our final event which took place last week in the venue called '100 thousand poets for change'. we joined a worldwide community of poets in global link up. you can listen to the recording of a poem gav mart wrote for engedi, with martin daws on kalimba here:

Tracy Hulse - Volunteer of the Year Award WINNER!

2015-04-24T04:05:00.002-07:00

Our very own Tracy Hulse has been award The Volunteer of the Year Award 2015!

watch the video of her receiving the award at Colwyn Bay town council
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1FY2HqWxaI&feature=youtu.be

Tracy Hulse has been volunteering for Engedi Arts for the past three years. She has tirelessly committed time and energy to the restoration of The Imperial Hotel Venue known as Engedi Arts on Colwyn Bay High St. She has opened the venue on a day to day basis and cared for the general public who have ventured into the space. She has provided social, arts and crafts activities for people, cooked, cleaned and provided meals for people and created a warm environment for people who are on the margins to come and find some support.

The work of Engedi Arts through volunteers such as Tracy and her husband Ewart allows the local community to have a space where they can feel empowered and allowed to express themselves primarily through the arts, but also simply through feeling valued and accepted for who they are within a safe community space. The work has developed over the years through offering a wide range of arts activities to creating a space where people can get a hot drink and share some food within a community context. People call Engedi a ‘safe space’ where they feel empowered to find their place and their voice within the local community where perhaps they have previously felt disempowered.

Tracy has experienced what it can feel like to become marginalised within her community. For a period of time up until her first involvement within Engedi, Tracy was experiencing a range of illness that meant she would rarely leave the house and was quite cut off from her community and people around her. Her inspiration in getting involved with Engedi’s initiatives have seen her health improve and her skills develop from volunteering in basic venue maintenance activities to her now managing and running the venue on a paid capacity.

Tracy’s husband Ewart has supported her involvement in Engedi Arts by making himself permanently available to the project’s needs. Ewart was made unemployed during the break up of Jessops photography shop in Llandudno, and has since thrown himself into full time volunteering with all of Engedi’s community projects and activities. Together the couple have proved to be a dynamic team who genuinely care for the needs of the local area.

Both Tracy and Ewart are always available to the community’s needs and demands. They are consistently there for the people who need support within the community, and are now taking on more official roles and responsibilities at improving the locality around them through ‘self-starting’ initiatives and through managing community led enterprises. They are a credit to their local community, acting as a fantastic example of how to lead the regeneration of a local community rather than waiting for a ‘state lead’ solution to social issues.

engedi's venue manager trace had been out and about with the ADVENTurousii tour throughout dec running creative art workshops. the sessions had produced a beautiful mosaic star produced by people in each venue and an finished on the opening night at engedi

gavin mart blogs on curating #ADVENTurousii and his new single 'bring it down' [separation wall]

2014-12-24T04:40:00.003-08:00

"... if you want to know what bethlehem looks like today... it's not the manger, and shepherds and star-lit hillsides with shepherds and sheep; its an 8 meter high concrete wall, surrounding the city..."

in the summer i watched the horrors of the israel/palestine conflict unfold on my tv screen. numb, disaffected, and unempowered; i wondered what on earth i might be my response to what i was witnessing. i felt at the very least i could try and understand the situation a bit better, but really didn't know where to start. i felt ignorant and felt that the media channels delivering the news perhaps weren't giving me a balanced story.

i felt probably like most of us do, helpless, distant, and a bit uneasy in the relative comfort of my own existence, but not knowing how to help or even if there was a way to help the situation.

perhaps the easiest thing to do would have been to turn over the tv channel, which is on the whole what i did throughout the summer whilst watching the violence, and do regularly when i don't know how [or want] to handle what i am seeing... perhaps someone qualified to take care of it all, would do so...

at Greenbelt Festival i saw the film of the 'the wall' built as a part of bethlehem unwrapped, an awareness festival. it was an amazing concept, and is well worth a watch...

i loved how the making of the wall gave art, and artists a voice into the situation, helping people to understand the situation and circumstances a little better.

i loved how the wall made the simple point that there is a MASSIVE WALL in these people's immediate world, stopping them going about their lives in freedom. i wondered what it might be like to have a wall like this in my life somewhere, perhaps between wales [where i live] and england? between my house and the snowdonia hillside? between me and the beaches i love?

but there isn't a great wall in my life, i'm free and have a lot to be thankful for...

so my response in the end was two-fold: i wanted to curate an art exhibition which built on the ideas of advent, and which helped to frame the season perhaps in the light of the contemporary issues which surround the 'holy land' today. some 35 or so wonderful artists contributed to the engedi arts #ADVENTurousii exhibition, and we toured it around the country hosting discussions with various partners along the way:

amos trust, the holy land trust, greenbelt, psalm sessions, stour space, fishermans chapel, dream dare do, bethesda 2 bethlehem

the exhibition opens at engedi arts colwyn bay on jan 3rd

i also wrote the song 'bring it down' and had the pleasure of recording it with 'les cousins' music here in llandudno, north wales. you can hear the track here and download it for £1

gavinmart.com

i think my hope is that my small engagement in the issues will help to bring a wider awareness into the issues and to some of the people and organisations trying to make a difference in people directly affected by the issues that i witnessed on my tv screens in the summer.

i hope to visit the region in 2015 to gain a deeper understanding, and as people from bethlehem keep saying to me: 'come and visit us in the flesh, its one of the best ways to help...'

#ADVENTurousii rides into bethesda...

2014-12-22T06:25:00.002-08:00

we were kindly invited to be a part of 'bethesda 2 bethlehem'

the event took place in the all new neaudd ogwen centre in the town

the team set up a live video link for a q+a to 'bethlehem - behind the wall

we exhibited a selection of our artwork from the #ADVENTurousii exhibition, opening 4pm 3rd Jan at engedi arts, colwyn bay

we were extremely partial to their old school desks that the center had in it's bar area... bit jealous

people got involved with our creative workshop, making the star, collected from our various tour dates over the last month, london, leigh on sea, winchester... even the events host and resident bard rhys trimble was caught getting involved

katie duxbury's angel got the beers in as it was the last date of the tour

the venue has a great stage set-up and we enjoyed music from gavin mart, Threnody (choir), Hot Dawg Assassins, Fay Ray, and Banda Bacana

ADVENTurous ii

2014-09-18T06:13:00.002-07:00

you are cordially invited to submit expressions of interest for the 2nd of our ADVENTurous exhibitions. previously hosted in london, leeds and colwyn bay by engedi arts, ADVENTurous returns for a fresh, multimedia exhibition displaying some of the most creative artistic imaginations from amongst our community and extended arts collective.

ADVENT is a time when the story of jesus’ birth is retold. we like to re-imagine that story, to tell it through the eyes of the artist, the subversive, the prophet, the small and quietened voice ...the creative imagination. we think the ADVENT story ought not to be simply ‘handed down’ to us by the establishment, but to be retold from within the cultures and contexts in which we find ourselves. we don’t intend to proselytise, simply to scratch away at the surface of a beautiful love story to find some treasure beneath the surface.

that’s the bit where you come in…

this year, alongside our visual artists, we are inviting performance artists, writers, poets, songwriters and mucisians to contribute towards a multimedia collection which will be available as an on-line resource as well as part of the exhibition.

we’d like you to explore some of the following themes found within the
ADVENT story:

escape, fame, pilgrimage, devotion, immaculate, lucid dreams, jealousy, astrology, exile, visitations, anna the prophetess, greed, genocide, consummation, treachery, womb, beautiful, determination, betrayal, reverence, morbid gifts, purification ritual,
illegitimacy, law & order, sheepherder.

please reply to curator@engediarts.com with your expressions of interest. it may not be possible to commission all the expressions we receive. pieces should be prepared for transportation due to the pop-up nature of our events.

the exhibition will be incarnated as a series of pop-up events throughout late nov and dec 2014, in london and north wales – details of events to follow.

DATES:

expressions of interest: until early OCT
commissioning of works: OCT-NOV
submission of final pieces: no later than: NOV 17th
exhibitions: NOV - JAN 2015

2014-09-02T05:06:00.003-07:00

ok folks a = NEWS UPDATE = we are moving venue... up the road to the old dans den shop...

it seems like a little ',' in our journey and the start of something new, fresh and exciting - and we love and embrace change - so i thought i would take this chance to say some stuff.

its been quite a ride over the last 3 years - we started out as a pop up art exhibition in an abandoned hotel and have now become a small community exploring ways of bringing about positive social change.

thank you to everyone who has journeyed with us over the last few years, painted a wall, wired a plug, washed up, cooked, created art, ran a workshop, dared to dream, come to a gig, donated something to us, sat in our armchairs, believed in us, volunteered, and seen further than a few grubby windows into the warm soul of a beautiful community which is full of talent, love and patience...

over the last couple of years Tracy J Hulse who has managed the venue andEwart Hulse, and their family who has given countless hours for very little in return, they have simply not stopped and i know a very many people in colwyn bay's lives have been made a bit brighter by their care and dedication to an often thankless initiative.

at the risk of alienating somebody [please please please forgive me if i do!!] a special thanks goes to Alan Whitfield who dared to dream with me in the early days and helped turn a cup of coffee into a 3 year initiative, @the poet martin daws who says everything i can't say in a beautiful way, andCurmudgeonly for the inspiration behind the whole project along with friendsLeft Bank Leeds and Union Chapel... thanks also to Ymuno Festival,Greenbelt Festival and Prince's Drive Baptist Church who sponsored our original endeavours along with Cyngor Celfyddydau Cymru | Arts Council of Wales, Age Friendly Communities, Cymunedau yn Cyntaf CONWY Communities First, The Laundry Studios, TAPE Community Music and Film,Missional Communities, Orders and Projects Hub at CMS, People's Health Trust and Mostyn, who have all found creative ways to support us in some capacity.

the whole project has been underwritten by the Methodist Church who have dared to believe that love can be expressed in different ways than the conventional, and i realise that that has been quite a challenge for some, but also a much needed invitation to others...

we would like to thank all the artists and promoters who have contributed to our projects, both visual and performance and for without whom the project would not exist. we have laughed at comedy nights, moshed at grime and metal, eaten at food feasts and gazed at out gallerys, had baptisms, and beer parties, and explored every idea people have suggested... we've laughed and cried with one another, fallen out and made up and practised new skills at workshops. we've succeeded and failed in equal measure, but learnt lots and lots and lots along the way

we have no idea what the future holds, other than we hope to continue to support the local arts economy and offer a safe space for people to come and chat, have a go at something different, and dream of a better world and something bigger than ourselves... we hope you'll continue to join us along the way...

here's to the next chapter...

to be remembered...

2014-07-21T01:39:00.000-07:00

To be Remembered ?

This piece is made up of 170 glass bottles.

In each bottle are the handwritten details of one person

from Colwyn Bay who died in action during the Great War (WW1).

Each person is commemorated on the Cenotaph in Colwyn Bay,

there are 169 men and 1 woman.

The bottles contain as much information as was available, in some cases just a name.

Where possible it includes :

Name, Rank, Serial Number and Company, also the

date they died and their age.

It also states where they are buried

or where they are commemorated.

I wanted every one of them to be remembered individually, but still together, as real people not a number on a very long list.
