New journal

The library now has a subscription to ASCE’s new Journal of Legal Affairs and Dispute Resolution in Engineering and Construction. The journal was launched in Feb 2009 and two issues have so far been published. The Civil Engineering Dept Library holds the print version for this title but you can also access the electronic version if you click here.

Transportation research information services (TRIS)

Transportation Research Information Services (TRIS) is a resource covering transportation research information and provides access to information held on Research in Progress, Transportation Research Thesaurus, Research Needs Statements, Transportation Research Board (TRB) Publications Index, and Climate Change research at TRB. There are references to books, technical reports, conference proceedings and journal articles.

Journal Citation Reports data for 2008 now available

The Journal Citation Reports information for 2008 is now available.

Journal Citation Reports offers a systematic, objective means to critically evaluate the world’s leading journals, with quantifiable, statistical information based on citation data. By compiling articles’ cited references, JCR helps to measure research influence and impact at the journal and category levels, and shows the relationship between citing and cited journals. The following information can be gained from the data:

Number of articles published in the journal in for a given year.
Number of citations to that journal from articles published in a given year.
Impact factor of the journal, and how it ranks in impact in relation to other journals.

New Functionality in JCR Web

Five-Year Impact Factor – Gives a broader range of citation activity for a more informative snapshot over time. For journals in subjects where citation activity continues to rise through several years, this allows more of their total citation activity to be included in a critical performance metric.
Eigenfactor™ Metrics, comprised of the Eigenfactor™ Score and Article Influence™ Score, are designed to reflect the prestige and citation influence of journals by considering scholarly literature as a network of journal-to-journal relationships.
Graphic Displays of Impact Factor “Box Plots” – A graphic interpretation of how a journal ranks in different categories.
Rank-in-Category Tables for Journals Covering Multiple Disciplines – allows a journal to be seen in the context of multiple categories at a glance rather than only a single one.
Journal “Self Citations” – An analysis of journal self citations and their contribution to the Journal Impact Factor calculation.

New ‘companion guide’ to the structural Eurocodes

Responding to market demand, BSI British Standards has published an unbiased 64-page ‘companion guide’ to the structural Eurocodes – the new pan-European set of standards for designing and building civil engineering works. The Eurocodes which are due to come into force in March 2010 will replace many existing British standards.

The guide is available free as a download from the BSi website. It is written by leading industry experts from the world of standards and further afield. It delivers practical and timely advice on how the new codes will work and how they might benefit construction professionals.

The guide covers important issues regarding the structural Eurocodes including:

– What are the Eurocodes?

– Why are they so important?

– Who produced the Eurocodes?

– What is the target date for their introduction into the UK?
