Smartphone-Driven Robots

NASA has successfully tested smartphone-powered satellites to help astronauts with their tasks aboard the International Space Station (ISS).

Through its Human Exploration Telerobotics project, the space agency outfitted free-flying satellites--called Synchronized Position Hold, Engage, Reorient Experimental Satellites (SPHERES)--with modified Android-based Nexus S headsets from Samsung and successfully flew the first of the robots last month on the ISS. NASA has posted a video of the test flight on its website.

The handsets provide onboard power, propulsion, computing, and navigational software, as well as built-in cameras and sensors for the SPHERES, according to NASA. Each smartphone is connected to one of the flying robots via a cable, and a Wi-Fi network connection to ISS computers provide a data connection.

NASA changed the handsets only slightly to make them suitable for the flying robots. It removed the GSM communications chip to avoid interference with electronics aboard the ISS, and replaced the lithium battery with AA alkaline batteries. Other than that, the handsets powering the robots are "identical to the off-the-shelf consumer device," the agency said.

While the Samsung headset is the first one to be approved for the program, NASA said it will use other types of smartphones in the future.

SPHERES are meant to serve as remote-controlled astronaut assistants, performing tasks such as surveys and inspections of the interior of the ISS by capturing mobile camera images and video.

NASA also has bigger plans for the flying robots, aiming to simulate external free-flight excursions and test other more-challenging tasks to see what they can handle, the space agency said.

Using smartphones or their software as flight controllers is an option the federal government increasingly is exploring.

Researchers from Boeing and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology recently tested controlling a mini unmanned aerial device using an iPhone in a remote location. The U.S. military widely uses UAVs--also known as drones--in combat, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions.

The Department of Defense's technology research arm, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), also is eyeing the use of mobile applications to control and provide other sensors for UAVs and other military vehicles.

DARPA is seeking smartphone app developers for its Adaptable Sensor System (ADAPT) program, which uses a commercial development model to facilitate rapid delivery and configuration of sensor systems for myriad military vehicles. source-/informationweek

Altering the very fabric of technophilic society, a multinational team of material scientists have created electric circuits and transistors out of cotton fibers. Two kinds of transistor were created: a field-effect transistor (FET), much like the transistors found in your computer's CPU; and an electrochemical transistor, which is similar but capable of switching at lower voltages, and thus better suited for wearable computers.

If you're like me, you're probably thinking that cotton is a very strong insulator and not at all conducive to conductiveness — but before you accuse this team from Italy, France, and the United States of witchcraft and wizardry, bear in mind that they kind of cheated. Cotton is just the substrate: To make it conductive, the researchers coated cotton threads in a variety of other materials. To make conductive "wires," the team coated the threads with gold nanoparticles, and then a conductive polymer. To turn a cotton wire into a semiconductor, it was dipped in another polymer, and then a further glycol coating to make it waterproof.

The end result, according to the research paper, is cotton yarns that can be used to fashion the basic building blocks of a computer circuit, but still retain their flexibility. Because of the coatings the threads are slightly stiffer, but on the flip side they are more elastic, too. It is not a time-consuming process to create these conductive cotton threads, either: It's comparable to dyeing.

These tailor-made cotton circuits will weave the way to, quite literally, wearable computers. For the first time, instead of incorporating small chips or flexible printed circuits, you will be able to build a t-shirt that is also a computer. Just think how many interconnections there are in a standard cotton shirt — it's on the scale of hundreds of thousands or millions — and each one could become a transistor. We're obviously a little way away from that reality, but the idea of incorporating sensors — radiation detectors, toxic substance detectors, heart beat monitors — is just around the corner.

Imagine the high-tech grandmother of tomorrow, too: Instead of knitting you a crappy Christmas sweater, she could knit a sweater with a built-in GPS unit, and love-handle sensors that alert her when your body-mass index reaches dangerously low levels.

From January, Internet Explorer (IE) users will be automatically updated to the latest version of the browser.

Microsoft said it was starting the project to update millions of machines to improve security online.

Future updates to the browser would be applied without a user's knowledge to help beat scammers catching people out with fake updates.

Those who did not want their browser updated could opt out or uninstall the software, said Microsoft.

"The Web overall is better - and safer - when more people run the most up-to-date browser," wrote Ryan Gavin, Microsoft's IE boss, in a blogpost explaining the plan.

He said the data gathered by Microsoft for its security intelligence reports showed that many cyber criminals targeted old or outdated software when they tried to trick people into installing fake updates.

To beat such scams, Mr Gavin, said that once the latest version of the browser was installed all future updates would arrive silently and be applied without a user getting involved.

Chester Wisniewski, senior security advisor at Sophos, said the plan would aid those who did not see the importance of staying up to date.

"Microsoft has been struggling with browser stragglers for years," he said in a statement.

Demise of IE6

The giant upgrade programme will affect IE users running Windows XP, Vista and 7, and will first be rolled out in Australia and Brazil. Only those Windows users with automatic updates turned on will be enrolled in the programme.

Those using Windows XP will be upgraded to IE8, while those on Vista and 7 get bumped up to IE9. This will probably mean the demise of IE6, a 10-year-old version of the browser that Microsoft has been trying to kill off for a while.

Figures gathered by Microsoft suggest IE6 is used by about 8.3% of people around the world, with the biggest number of users in China, where almost 28% of people remain wedded to it.

Globally, Internet Explorer is still the most popular browser, with more than 52% of people using it, according to net market research firm Net Applications. Mozilla's Firefox and Google's Chrome are battling it out for second place.

Microsoft said it had made tools that would let people avoid or uninstall the more up-to-date versions of the browsers if they wanted to stay with an older copy.

What is EDGE Technology?

Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) (also known as Enhanced GPRS (EGPRS), or IMT Single Carrier (IMT-SC), or Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution) is a digital mobile phone technology that allows improved data transmission rates as a backward-compatible extension of GSM. EDGE is considered a pre-3G radio technology and is part of ITU's 3G definition.[1] EDGE was deployed on GSM networks beginning in 2003 — initially by Cingular (now AT&T) in the United States.[2]

EDGE is standardized by 3GPP as part of the GSM family.

Through the introduction of sophisticated methods of coding and transmitting data, EDGE delivers higher bit-rates per radio channel, resulting in a threefold increase in capacity and performance compared with an ordinary GSM/GPRS connection.

EDGE can be used for any packet switched application, such as an Internet connection.

Evolved EDGE continues in Release 7 of the 3GPP standard providing reduced latency and more than doubled performance e.g. to complement High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA). Peak bit-rates of up to 1Mbit/s and typical bit-rates of 400kbit/s can be expected.

Transmission techniques

In addition to Gaussian minimum-shift keying (GMSK), EDGE uses higher-order PSK/8 phase shift keying (8PSK) for the upper five of its nine modulation and coding schemes. EDGE produces a 3-bit word for every change in carrier phase. This effectively triples the gross data rate offered by GSM. EDGE, like GPRS, uses a rate adaptation algorithm that adapts the modulation and coding scheme (MCS) according to the quality of the radio channel, and thus the bit rate and robustness of data transmission. It introduces a new technology not found in GPRS, Incremental Redundancy, which, instead of retransmitting disturbed packets, sends more redundancy information to be combined in the receiver. This increases the probability of correct decoding.

EDGE can carry a bandwidth up to 236.8 kbit/s (with end-to-end latency of less than 150 ms) for 4 timeslots (theoretical maximum is 473.6 kbit/s for 8 timeslots) in packet mode. This means it can handle four times as much traffic as standard GPRS. EDGE meets the International Telecommunications Union's requirement for a 3G network, and has been accepted by the ITU as part of the IMT-2000 family of 3G standards.[1] It also enhances the circuit data mode called HSCSD, increasing the data rate of this service.

WARANGAL: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) is embroiled in a fresh controversy. The alarming rise in consumption of drugs like brown sugar, heroin and ganja among students has created a stir on the NIT campus. The NIT was in news a few months back for incidents of ragging and a couple of student suicides.

While Special Branch and police are keeping an eye on those allegedly supplying drugs to the gullible students, NIT director Srinivasa Rao has constituted an enquiry committee to look into the issue. The move comes in the wake of a third year B-Tech student's getting caught red-handed in the classroom with a huge consignment of ganja a couple of days back.

Joe Prasen, the student, who was taken into custody, spilled the beans and two ganja traders were picked up by cops. After it emerged that there is rampant drug abuse on campus, registrar Anandaraju lodged a complaint with Kazipet police station.

Srinivasa Rao said there would be strict vigilance to check drug abuse on the campus. He suspects the hand of 'outside elements' behind this menace. He said a committee comprising senior officials had been directed to probe the matter and submit a report.

The NIT director said that based on the enquiry committee report, strong action would be taken against the culprits.

Four years ago, when Chennai-born Lux Anantharaman, then a researcher specializing in cryptography and security at a government-run lab in Singapore, went through such an ordeal, he decided to do something about it.

"In spite of all the security work I was doing, I suddenly felt helpless," says Anantharaman. This experience led to the creation of iTwin, a pair of identical USB drives that share data exclusively between them over any connection without being accessible to any other system. BANGALORE: After getting a stay order from the Karnataka high court, the Karnataka Private Medical and Dental Colleges Association has announced that the entrance exam will be held on May 6, 2012. The test will be held for undergraduate medical and engineering courses.

Though the Medical Council of India had batted for a single medical entrance exam this year, the Association went to court against it. The court, on November 21, stayed the Centre's notification based on a proposal by MCI. Online applications will be available from March 10, 2012. Further updates will be hosted on the Comed-K website from February 15, 2012.

The exam will hold the key to seats in the member institutes of KPMDCA and Karnataka Unaided Private Engineering Colleges' Association.

AIEEE 2012 online exam - Switch language as many times as you want

NAGPUR: The online version of All India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEEE) is loaded with 'convenience' features offering students major advantages over offline version. While giving the online exam in 2012 students can change the language of answer as many times possible during the exam itself.

If a particular question in English is not understood properly by a student due to the language factor, he or she can switch over Hindi and answer it. They can then continue in Hindi afterwards or switch back again to English throughout the exam. This switching between languages will not have any negative bearing on the evaluation. After the students finish their online exam, a copy of the question paper will be automatically emailed to them.

Abhishek Bansal, who runs a coaching centre, said, "This advantage is available in offline mode only to those who opted for Hindi medium as the question paper comes in both languages. On one side, the questions are written in Hindi and on the other in English. Students opting for English medium do not have that advantage at all."

The AIEEE 2012 online version is also going to be held daily from May 7 - May 26 giving students ample time to prepare. As the offline exam is scheduled for April 29, students can avail of more than a month's extra time to prepare. To top it all, the three hour long online exam will be held twice daily, with morning test starting at 9 am and the afternoon one starting at 2pm. However, there are many students who have been advised by their coaching classes to opt for the offline exam. Many argue that the online version's advantage is still minimal.

Bansal said, "it is not the mode of exam but the nature questions that count. Other things like language medium and frequency of exam are minor issues. Students want to ensure that they get questions they have prepared for. I have not recommended any particular version to my students as I want them to take the decision themselves. For next year, I would be more comfortable with offline version."

One Entrance Test for Any Engineering College in India -IIITs okay single entrance exam

Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) have given its approval to the proposed single national-level entrance test for admission to undergraduate programme for science and engineering. At a meeting of the directors of these premier institutes here today, chaired by HRD

minister Kapil Sibal, a proposal to have a council for the IIITs was also accepted.

The proposal to hold a pan-India common entrance test, recommended by the T Ramasami Committee report, has already been accepted by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and the National Institutes of Technology (NITs).

The report recommends a mix of school and national level test performance for entry to undergraduate courses, thereby reducing multiplicity of entrance tests and over-dependency on coaching.

The Central Advisory Board of Education will take a final call before the single entrance test is put in place by 2013-14 academic session.

According to HRD ministry officials, a proposal to have a council of the IIIT on the lines of IIT and NIT council was also approved. source-hindustantimes.com

BIT to study music impact on human mind

RANCHI: Leading mathematicians from the country will gather at the Birla Institute of Technology (BIT), Mesra, to discuss the healing effect of music on human mind.

They are already working to develop a mathematical and statistical model for Hindustani classical music and compare it with other forms of western music.

The idea is to record around seven to eight Indian ragas and plot a graph describing its various components like pitch, vibrations, reverberations and amplitude. Similar graphs would be plotted for western music and a comparative model will be developed. The model so developed will then be compared to sound frequencies that have been confirmed by neuro-physicians to have healing effect on human beings.

Giving details of the objective of discussing such an issue, Bimal Kumar Mishra of the department of applied mathematics at BIT, Mesra, said statistical models would help in furthering research in the field of medical science. "Mathematicians have been prompted to conduct research on this aspect after neuro-physicians confirmed that Hindustani music has some hidden aspects to affect mind and its activities," he said.

The theme will be discussed during the two-day national meet on "Mathematical and Statistical Modeling in Innovative Areas" being organized by Institution of Engineers, Ranchi, in association with BIT, Mesra, on October 19 and 20 on the Mesra campus.

The conference will emphasize on developing mathematical models on different forms of computer viruses. It is believed that almost every cyber crime is managed by tools that are named as virus like Trojan Horses and other spywares. "We will not only try to interpret the nature of virus but also develop a model that how long it may take to infect computers across globe linked through Internet if there is a virus attack," Mishra said. He further explained that mathematical and statistical modelling play a vital role for scientific study of various processes and activities in all walks of real life problems. "Analysis of mathematical modelling has direct impact on cyber crime, disaster management, climatology, biological systems, pollution, industries and more recently medical science as well."

P K Kapoor, the head of operational research department in Delhi University, will establish a link between mathematical modelling and its application in day-to-day life.

78 NIT, Jamshedpur students selected by Infosys

JAMSHEDPUR: Coming as a Diwali gift to the meritorious students of National Institute of Technology (NIT), Adityapur, Infosys has offered jobs to 78 students.

As part of the ongoing placement season, Infosys had visited the institution on Monday and following the daylong interview, it picked up as many as 78 students, including 25 from computer science stream and 17 from electronics.

All the students have been offered an annual salary package of Rs 3.5 lakh, said a source in the college. "All of them (78) have been picked up by the company on an annual pay package of Rs 3.5 lakh," said a senior official in the training and placement cell of NIT.

A final-year MCA students, who was picked up by Infosys, said although they were expecting the annual package to be around Rs 4 lakh, but given the global financial scenario, they thought it wise to accept the package. During the last placement season (2010-11), Infosys had picked up 50 students including 20 from the computer science stream.

"Wipro, TCS, Cognizant and IBM are scheduled to visit the college later this month and we hope their package will probably be in the A slot (Rs 4.5 lakh and above)," said an MCA student waiting for a good placement. Fastest plane by US

By the time you finish reading this sentence, the Falcon HTV-2, the fastest plane ever built, could have flown 18 miles. It would get from London to Sydney in less than an hour, while withstanding temperatures of almost 2,000C, hotter than the melting point of steel.

At 3pm BST on Thursday , the US Defence Advance Research Projects Agency will launch the Falcon Hypersonic Technology Vehicle 2 on the back of a rocket from the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. If all goes to plan, engineers will launch the Falcon HTV-2 to the edge of space, before detaching the plane and guiding it on a hypersonic flight that will reach speeds of 13,000mph (about 20 times the speed of sound) on its return to Earth.

The Falcon started life in 2003, part of a US military research project to build a plane that could reach (and potentially deliver bombs to) any part of the world in less than an hour.

The plane has been tested in computer models and wind tunnels, but they can only simulate speeds up to Mach 15 (11,400mph). A real test is the only way to determine if the plane will remain flying at high speeds.

Thursday's flight will also test the carbon composite materials designed to withstand the extreme temperatures the plane will experience on its skin and also the navigation systems that will control its trajectory as it moves at almost four miles per second.

The design and flight pattern of the plane has been tweaked since an aborted test flight in April last year. The present fee structure (in Indian rupees) of different institutes is given below as a guideline. However, the exact fees to be paid would be provided at the time of counselling. All candidates who accept the offer of admission by paying registration fees will become ineligible for appearing in JEE-2012 or later. Fees once paid will not be refunded.

The tuition fee for dual degree program will be Rs.14,000 per semester for the first four years and in the fifth year it will be Rs.6000/- for M.Tech. and Rs.20,000 for MBA. The amount payable in odd and even semesters for these students in subsequent years will vary accordingly.
