This year is the centenary of the sinking of the Titanic. The most famous peacetime maritime disaster in history, the Titanic sank on the 15 April 1912 on its maiden voyage from Southampton, England to New York when it struck an iceberg and went down with the loss of over 1,500 lives. It’s at the ship’s birthplace that the most impressive – indeed, awesome – commemorations will take place. The Titanic Signature Building in Belfast, Northern Ireland, is being constructed next to the slipway where the great liner was built. Costing nearly ?90 million ($140 million), it is the centerpiece of the largest urban regeneration project currently in Europe and a celebration of the City’s shipbuilding past. Due to open in March 2012, it is a striking piece of modern architecture whose futuristic shape is inspired by the Titanic’s famous brow.
