Negative Imperatives

An imperative is expressed by a verb word.

Please don’t + verb word
Please don”t speak anyone

Do not use an infinitive instead of a veb word.

Would you please not + verb word
Would you please not speak anyone

Avoid using an infinitive instead of a verb word. Avoid using don’t after would you please.

Example

Incorrect : Please don’t to park here.
Correct : Please don’t park here.
Or
Would you please not park here.

Incorrect : Would you please not to be late.
Correct : Pleaase don’t be late.
Or
Would you please not be late.

Incorrect : Would you please don’t smoke.
Correct : Please don’t smoke

Would Rather That - Preference for Another.
Remember that when the preference is another person or thing, would rather that introduces a clause. The other person or thing is the subject of the clause.

Although the verb is past tense, the preference is for present or future time.

S + would rather + that + S + V (past).
I would rather that you go.

S + would rather + that + S + didn’t + verb word.
I would rather that you didn’t go.

Avoid using a present verb or a verb word instead of a pat verb. Avoid using should and a verb word instead of a past verb and avoid using don’t or doesn’t instead of didn’t.

Examples :
Incorrect : Susan would rather that her husband doesn’t working so hard.
Correct : Susan would rather that her husband didn’t working so hard.

Incorrect : He’d rather that you should come tomorrow.
Correct : He’d rather that you should came tomorrow.

Preference - Would Rather
Remember that the phrase would rather is similar to a modal. Although would rather appears to be a past. It expresses preference in present and future time.

S + would rather + verb word
I would rather play

S + would rather + not + verb word
I would rather not play

Avoid using an infinitive or an – ing form instead of a verb word.

Examples:
Incorrect : John would rather has a beer than a coca cola.
Correct : John would rather have a beer than a coca cola.

Incorrect : She told me that she’d rather not to serve on the committee.

Advisability –> Had Better

The word : Had Better is similar to a modal. Although had appears to be a past, had better expresses advise for the future. So, You can use this word to give an advice.

Sentence Pattern

Note: Avoid using don't instead of not. And Avoid using an invinitive or a past form of a verb instead of a verb word.

The word used to is similar to a modal. Used to with a verb word means that a custom in the past has not continued. See The Pattern Bellow:

Logical Conclusions –in the Present Events (memastikan)

Important; must is a modal. Must followed by be and an –ing form or an adjective expresses a logical conclusion based on evidence. The conclusion is about an event that is happening now.

Logical Conclusions – in the Past Events
Important: must is a modal. Must followed by the verb word have and a participle expresses a logical conclusions based of evidence. The conclution is about an event that happened in the past.
Remember that an observation in the present may serve as the basis for an conclution about something that happened in the past.

S + must have + participle + past time

For example, “here is a message on My desk (last night) .” It may be concluded that “His friend must have called last night.” (To convince)

Avoid using should or can instead of must. Avoid using a verb word instead of have and participle when referring to events in the past.

Attantion; a modal is used with a verb word. A verb word is the dictionary form of the verb. In some grammar books, the verb word is called the bare infinitive because it appears without the word to. Verb words are very important in many patterns, but they are used most often with modals. The pattern is written below:

Help also can be used as a causative, a person does not perform an action directly. With HELP, a person assists another peson to do something.

LET is also can be used as a causative (a person does not perform an action directly). In another sentence LET, a person gives permission for another person to do it.

Remember that HAVE can be used as a causative (a person does not perform an action directly) HAVE has even less force and authority than GET.

Sentence Pattern

There are many common non progressive verbs.
It means that the verbs cannot be used in progressive tense.

Exception: Few of them can be used in progressive to express activity in progress.

Feel, Suppose, (think), imagine, doubt
Remember, forget, want, need, prefer, meat

Love, like, dislike, appreciate, hate, fear, care, mind, envy

Belong, own, posses (have)

Pattern I
Let’s + get + someone + infinitive + (complement)
Let’s get John to go with us

And

Pattern II
Let’s + get + something + participle + (complement)

Regular and Irregular verb.

· REGULAR VERBS: the simple past and past participle end in –ed
Present form : stop
Simple Past: stopped
Past participle: stopped
Present participle : stopping
· IRREGULAR VERBS: verbs use in the simple past and participle do not end in –ed
Present form : find, eat
Simple Past: found, ate
Past participle: found, eaten
Present participle : founding, eating etc.

American and British English has several different verb forms.
Present form- Simple Past- Past participle
American: bet-bet-bet………………………got-got-gotten……..quit-quit-quit
British : bet-bet-bet (or) bet-betted-betted…get-got-got……....quit-quitted-quitted

Simple Past- Past participle verb forms
British : end with –t : burnt, dreamt, knelt, leant, smelt, spelt, spilt, spoilt.
American : end with –ed: burned, dreamed etc

Santi always leaves at school at 7:30 (it expresses habitual or everyday activities)

The Characteristic of Tenses:
The example of the sentences is in the previous posting.

THE SIMPLE TENSES
Simple present; tells the event that habitually, usually happened, they exist now, have happened in the past and maybe will happen in the future.

Simple Past; The happened that began and finished in the past

Simple Future is; the event that will happen in the next. (Not now)

THE PROGRESSIVE TENSES
Present Progressive; It is the progressing activity. It starts in the past and is in progress at the present and probably continues in the next time.

Past Progressive; It was progressing activity that starting and ending before now.

Future Progressive is; the activity that will be in progress at a particular time in the future.

THE PERFECT TENSES
Present Perfect is; the activity that happened before now. Progressing time is not essential.

Past Perfect; the activity happened in the past and completely finessed before another time in the past too.

Future Perfect is; the activities that happen and progress in the next and finished in the future in certain time.

THE PERFECT PROGRESSIVE TENSES
Present Progressive; is the tense that happen and progress in the past time and could be finished until now.

Past Perfect Progressive; is the tense that happen and progress in the past.

Future Perfect Progressive; is the tense that will start and progress not right now but in the future

1. The Simple Tenses:
· Simple Preset ; I eat rice everyday.
· Simple Past ; I washed a T-shirt.
· Simple Future ; I will go to Jakarta.

2. The Progressive Tenses:
Present Progressive Tense ; I am eating banana.
Past Progressive Tense ; I was eating banana when she arrived.
Future Progressive Tense ; I will be eating when she arrive.

3. The Perfect Tenses
Present Perfect Tense ; I have already eaten.

Failure

Failure is an event that does not accomplish its intended purpose or lack of success. A person can fail in achieving something in his or her life. For instance, he or she fails to pass examination, fails to get a job, and fails in a marriage, such as Sam’s marriage problem. When a person afraid to do something or to face a complicated problem. So, that person is mentioned fail. He cannot handle a problem. He has not strength to strive. Moreover, Alex’s fundamental need has been forgotten by Sam Parker. In this case, Sam cannot achieve harmonious in his family, because of less pay attention to his wife.
