With the change of books at CEVAZ some of the students migrating to the new ones have had some problems at the moment of getting the books. Since the students finishing the old level 15 (Conversation level) have been updated and are now using Attitude 4 (Units 10 to 12) Macmillan has arranged to copy these units so that the students don't have to buy the whole book, but apparently for no reason they have failed to do so.

Since I don't want to get behind with my students, I'm offering the option to download unit 10 from the book, thus, giving Macmillan some time to bring their copies. Once these students move to level 17, they'll have to buy Attitude 5.

Grammar: Comparatives and Superlatives

Comparatives and Superlatives are special forms of adjectives. They are used to compare two or more things. Generally, comparatives are formed using -er and superlatives are formed using -est. This page will explain the rules for forming regular comparatives and superlatives, and also show some basic ways of using them.

Forming regular comparatives and superlatives

How these forms are created depends on how many syllables there are in the adjective. Syllables are like "sound beats". For instance, "sing" contains one syllable, but "singing" contains two -- sing and ing. Here are the rules:

Adjective form	Comparative	Superlative
Only one syllable, ending in E. Examples: wide, fine, cute	Add -R: wider, finer, cuter	Add -ST: widest, finest, cutest
Only one syllable, with one vowel and one consonant at the end. Examples: hot, big, fat	Double the consonant, and add -ER: hotter, bigger, fatter	Double the consonant, and add -EST: hottest, biggest, fattest
Only one syllable, with more than one vowel or more than one consonant at the end. Examples: light, neat, fast	Add -ER: lighter, neater, faster	Add -EST: lightest, neatest, fastest

How to use comparatives and superlatives

Comparatives

Comparatives are used to compare two things. You can use sentences with THAN, or you can use a conjunction like BUT. Examples:

Jiro is taller than Yukio.
Yukio is tall, but Jiro is taller.

Superlatives

Superlatives are used to compare more than two things. Superlative sentences usually use THE, because there is only one superlative. Examples:

Masami is the tallest in the class.
Yukio is tall, and Jiro is taller, but Masami is the tallest.

The International Education Week 2007

Celebrating and Promoting International Education and Exchange.

The International Education Week (IEW) is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to recognize the global exchange environment between the United States and other countries. At CEVAZ we celebrated it by organizing a set of different activities that would enhance the relations between the US and Venezuela. The topic chosen was the Chinita's Fair and many groups developed their own tasks so as to show what they thought about this particular celebration in our region.

Some of the students sang gaitas, others did very funny plays, oral presentations and videos. My group (Level 17) prepared a video and it received very good comments among teachers and students alike.

I'm sorry for the lateness, but here it is! This review test corresponds to the new Level 19 (Units 10 to 12) from In Detail 1 and the 3 handouts studied in class. The listening is about Making Arrangements and although it doesn't have too much of the grammatical context, it does have to do with making arrangements for the future (studied in one of the handouts). Try to simulate the exam conditions and take the listening only two times, if you do it more that 3 times then you need to practice more.

For one thing, my group (level 17) has been producing a video for the upcoming International Education Week about the Chinita's Fair and also, I have accepted more hours for an In-Company conversation course. But here's the review test for Level 17 (Units 4 to 6) in the book In Detail 1 and I'm also including the handouts that we studied in class. The Listening is about soccer, and although it seems easy you should play it 3 times (to simulate exam conditions). Read the questions carefully, so you can write the correct answers.

The Virgin of Chiquinquira's Fair

Introduction

The month of November has a special meaning for the people of Zulia due to the number of celebrations that offer tribute to the Virgin of Chiquinquirá or “Chinita” as we call her. It is for this reason that the Gaita is heard all over Zulia with a special frenzy and joy.

From all the different celebrations that honor our Virgin, The Virgin of Chiquinquirá’s fair is the most impressive, even for the tourists that come to our homeland every year to enjoy the festivities and to sing the Happy Birthdays to the mother of all zulians.

Story

According to the zulian tradition, it all began on a clear day of 1709 when Maria Cardenas, a humble woman who lived in El Saladillo, went to wash her clothes with a group of other women on the lake shore. That was when she saw a small white wooden slab floating on the lake. She took it home so as to cover a pot where she used to store water.

On Tuesday, November 18, 1709, Maria Cardenas was busy running her household chores and grinding cocoa when she heard, in three occasions, the knocks that came from the place where she kept the wooden slab. Feeling curious about this, she went directly to see what was happening and found the slab glowing with a bright light to later find the image of our Virgin of Chiquinquirá.

Surprised and filled with a strong emotion, she immediately ran out of her house located on the 2^nd avenue, screaming and shouting the words “Miracle! Miracle!” Her neighbors went where the woman was to find out that the apparition of the Virgin Mary was real. From that day on, the faith of the zulians found their Queen in the “Chinita”. As it has been expressed by many people, “She is the way that leads to Jesus”.

The Wooden Slab, the Crown and the Square

Since the wooden slab depicting the image of the Virgin Mary arrived to our shores 298 years ago, the Marian faith has grown exponentially. It was first taken to a small sanctuary built to honor San Juan de Dios and later, under the rule of the governor Francisco de la Roche Ferrer, a bigger chapel was erected to worship the newly found Virgin of Chiquinquirá. The wooden slab remained in there for the next generations until the final stage of the Basilica was completed in 1858.

The wooden slab is relatively small. The dimensions are: 26 centimeters wide by 25 centimeters long with 3 millimeters deep. If you look at it, you’ll find the image of the Virgin Mary holding the baby Jesus in her left arm. Te her left, there is Saint Andrew holding an open book and to her right there is Saint Anthony holding a chastity lily in his right hand. The slab was restored and preserved, and 18-karat gold was engraved to magnify its beauty.

The crown weighs 10 kilograms and it was made of 18-karat gold, donated by all parishioners who had a strong devotion towards the Virgin. Its inner arch measures 27 centimeters by 44 centimeters and a number of precious stones were embedded. It is indeed one of the most highly prized relics in our beloved Zulia. By the time the crown was made it cost around 250 thousand Bolivars.

By the year 2004, the local government inaugurated the “Square of the Rosary”, an open sanctuary reminiscent of the old times when the Saladillo existed. The great monument of the Virgin of Chiquinquirá is located exactly where Maria Cardenas’ house once was. The total area of the square is 30 thousand square meters whose epicenter is a 15-meter-high allegorical statue of the Virgin Mary. There are also three mirror-like fountains as well as a smaller square devoted to Saint Sebastian, the patron saint of Maracaibo.

The Chinita’s fair

The Chinita’s fair officially begins on October 27^th when the Virgin is taken down from the altar in which she rests. She tours all over the Zulia State and returns to the Basilica to start all the religious festivities. Around October 2^nd, Bella Vista Avenue sees itself lit up by all the Christmas decorations and the local government promotes a series of public concerts with national and international artists to begin the “real” fair. Crowds of people flock together to the different stages or platforms devised to house such concerts.

Other cultural activities are held during the fair. Expo-Zulia is a temporary marketplace where the zulians show a great deal products that characterize our region. Many merchants, stores, companies and artisans offer their products at reasonably low prices. The Bullfights are also popular and a number of these are held in our bullring. The “Toros coleados” is another event that people don’t usually miss. Many “gaiteros” gather in front of the basilica to sing their best gaitas to please the patron virgin of our people putting an end to the “gaita season”.

The 17^th and 18^th of November.

The last two days of the Chinita’s fair are the most special ones. It is during these days when all the great parties around the city are held. By the afternoon of the 17^th, many people enjoy the multiple concerts and gaita bands that sing in the different pubs, clubs and discos of our city. The party begins on the 17^th and lasts way into the wee hours of the 18^th, having fun in the “Gaitero Daybreak”. A lot of people usually go to the Chinita’s baseball game right after this traditional party and to the “Toros coleados” in the afternoon.

Conclusion

Many things define the regional identity of us zulians, but it is the Chinita’s fair the one that we hold most dear. It is incredible that only 298 years ago an elderly lady found a small wooden slab that would turn into our most precious dreams into a wonderful reality. The Chinita’s fair is open to everybody, not only the people who worship the virgin but to those who seek a warm heart and a wide smile. As one of our best gaitas says in its lyrics: “Venite pa’ Maracaibo, pa’ la feria de la Chinita”.

Movie review: The Bourne Ultimatum

Many of us are already used to the Bourne series of films, since the very first movie came along, Matt Damon made us sit at the edge of our seats with The Bourne Identity, then The Bourne Supremacy came by to be finally topped by The Bourne Ultimatum. And guessing you all know the story, Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) is just trying to find the truth about his past, before he became this ass-kicking man.

The movie is filled with action from beggining to end, and although the performances were kind of regular, the plot keeps you stuck to the screen since the first bullet is triggered. For all action lovers this movie is a must-see. I went to see it with my brother and his wife and I must confess that I really enjoyed it.

I'd give this movie 4 stars out of 5, just for its action sequences. Some sequences were not very believable though, things that were too stupid to have happened the way they happened (you'll see the movie).

It's interesting to see that our Venezuelan-born actor, Edgar Ramirez, is carving up his way to golden hall where hollywood celebrities dwell, playing the role of an assassin that is tracking down Jason Bourne. I commented with my brother his performance and we were impressed by all the lines he had in the movie, he said something like "Why didn't you kille me?". Well, he didn't get many lines but at least he's getting a name of his own. I hope he'll get more representative and challenging roles in the future. Way to go, Edgar!

In English as in many other languages, the passive voice is the form of a transitive verb whose grammatical subject serves as the patient, receiving the action of the verb. The passive voice is typically contrasted with the active voice, which is the form of a transitive verb whose subject serves as the agent, performing the action of the verb. The subject of a verb in the passive voice corresponds to the object of the same verb in the active voice.

Passive constructions have a range of meanings and uses. The use to map a clause with a direct object to a corresponding clause where the direct object has become the subject. For example:

John threw the ball.

Here, threw is a transitive verb with John as its subject and the ball as its direct object. If we recast the verb in the passive voice (was thrown), then the ball becomes the subject (it is promoted to the subject position) and John disappears:

The ball was thrown.

The original subject can typically be re-inserted using the preposition by:

The ball was thrown by John.

The Causative in English

For those who wish to have a second person explain the causatives in Emglish, I found these 2 videos explaining the Causative and the passive form of the Causative.

The Causative
The causative has the meaning of 'someone causes someone to do something'. The three verbs usually used for the causative are get, have, and make. Examples:
a. John got Susan to rake the leaves.
b. John had Susan rake the leaves.
c. John made Susan rake the leaves.

Notice in a that there is a to in to rake.
Notice in b and c that there is no to.

Get gives the idea of persuasion, have is asking, and make is forcing or strong convincing. There is not much difference between have and get.

These causative verbs can be in any verb tense:
a. I am making my students write the exam again next week because they did so poorly.
b. I have been having my kids shovel the sidewalks after every snowfall.
c. I have to get my wife to pick me up after work because my car is in for repairs.

Causative Passive
The causative in the passive voice has two structures:
1. For GET and HAVE: usually used with professional services.
I went to the bank to have my cheque cashed.
I got my car washed and the oil changed.

GET/HAVE plus SOMETHING plus PAST PARTICIPLE (by someone)
Usually, we know who is doing the professional service so the BY SOMEONE is not required.

2. MAKE in the passive works the same as the usual passive for other verbs:
I was made to clean my room when I was just a lad.

Notice that in the passive with make, an infinitive with to follows:
I will be made to rewrite the test if my mark is poor.
The teacher will make me rewrite the test if my mark is poor.

Grammar: Compound Modifiers

"A compound modifier (also called a compound adjective) is an adjectival or adverbial phrase of two or more words. According to modern writing guides, compound modifiers require a hyphen between each word (not between the phrase and the noun the phrase modifies). Hyphens help prevent confusion; otherwise, a reader might interpret the words separately, rather than as a phrase. One or more hyphens join the words into a single idea."

The Clue: They belong together. They are not part of a series that can separately describe the noun. Plural forms are turned into singular forms.

I think Steve is a well-intentioned volunteer.
Steve is a helpful, supportive volunteer.
The 20-year-old man was too young to buy alcohol.

To give PHYSICAL or METHAPHORICAL descriptions.

The stool has three legs. ---> It is a three-legged stool.

*Only if have is used to indicate a PART of the whole, NOT POSSESSION of something separate:
We CANNOT say:

In this level you have to practice Units 1 to 3 from the book In Detail 1. I am still developing other review tests so you can practice whenever you want.

The score will come up once you submit your results and will be sent directly to my e-mail account. For a specific vew of each correct/incorrect answer, you'll have to wait until I check my e-mail (which is every day) and send the results to you. So be patient!

Ironman [2008]

If you're one of my friends, you'll know how much I love Marvel Superheroes. Since the X-Men were put into the big screen, the attention to these kind of super humans has increased exponentially. Spiderman did it so, as well as the X-Men. But this time, Tony Stark's turn to smash the box office is for 2008.

I was a little worried about how Robert Downey Jr. would fit to the role of Tony Stark, but I consider him to be a great actor, besides, a stunt sctor could perfectly fit into the ironman armor without our noticing it.
