The principles outlined in each chapter are richly illustrated with vignettes and extracts from real classrooms so the reader can see what the principles "look like" when realized in classroom teaching. The book is divided into three sections: Exploring Skills, Exploring Language, and Supporting the Learning Process.Critical areas of language teaching are comprehensively addressed with a specific focus on practical techniques, strategies, and tips. World-class specialists like Neil Andersen, Kathleen M. Bailey, Mary Ann Christison, and David Nunan offer a variety of perspectives on language teaching and the learning process. Reflection questions invite readers to think about critical issues in language teaching while Action tasks outline strategies for putting new techniques into practice. Thoughtful suggestions for books, articles, and Web sites offer resources for additional, up-to-date information. Like the first edition, the second edition surveys the major approaches and methods in language teaching, such as grammar translation, audiolingualism, communicative language teaching, and the natural approach. The text examines each approach and method in terms of its theory of language and language learning, goals, syllabus, teaching activities, teacher and learner roles, materials, and classroom techniques. In addition to the approaches and methods covered in the first edition, this edition includes new chapters, such as whole language, multiple intelligences, neurolinguistic programming, competency-based language teaching, cooperative language learning, content-based instruction, task-based language teaching, and The Post-Methods Era.Teachers and teachers-in-training will discover that this second edition is a comprehensive survey and analysis of the major and minor teaching methods used around the world. The book seeks not only to clarify the assumptions behind these methods and their similarities and differences, but also to help teachers explore their own beliefs and practices in language teaching.New York, Silent Way, Situational Language Teaching, Oxford University Press, United States, Cambridge University Press, Direct Method, Newbury House, Prentice Hall, Neurolinguistic Programming, Englewood Cliffs, Council of Europe, Translation Method, Natural Method, Reform Movement, Apple River, Grammar Translation, Cognitive Approach, English Course, English Language Syllabus, Multilingual Matters, American Council of Learned Societies, Caleb Gattegno, Coleman Report, Content-Based Teaching
New!

The book will also be of interest to any teachers with students from linguistically diverse backgrounds.

ORDER HERE:

Review
'... like companion volumes in the Cambridge Applied Linguistics series, it is readable without over-simplifying detailed arguments ... One of the aspects I particularly like in this book is the frequent and explicit references to learners and their teachers in specific situations. This ensures accessibility of the information to both the academic and to the classroom teacher, for whom much of the information will be of great use.' VATME Newsletter No 71, 1997

Product Description
This book provides an introduction to the field of sociolinguistics for second and foreign language teachers. Chapters cover the basic areas of sociolinguistics that have a bearing on language teaching, including regional and social variations in dialects, language and gender, World Englishes, and intercultural communication. Each chapter has been specially written for this collection by an individual who has done extensive research on the topic explored. For each topic there is an overview of central terms and issues, and a discussion of implications for the language classroom. This is the first introductory text to address explicitly the pedagogical implications of current theory and research in sociolinguistics. The book will also be of interest to any teachers with students from linguistically diverse backgrounds. educational linguistics, sociolinguistic transfer, ethnographic microanalysis, language strategists, discourse completion task, verbal report interviews, speech act behavior, situated inferences, language learning motivation, societal multilingualism, speech act set, intercultural miscommunication, interactional sociolinguistics, interactional sociolinguists, contextualization cues, speech act studies, sociolinguistic conventions, language planning, indirect complaints, contextual presuppositions, code mixing, verbal genres, semantic formulas, white vernaculars, literacy traditionsNew York, United States, Cambridge University Press, World Englishes, Newbury House, Oxford University Press, University of California, Academic Press, Department of Linguistics, John Benjamins, Georgetown University Press, American English, Basil Blackwell, Sandra Lee, Outer Circle, Puerto Rican, Los Angeles, Annual Review of Applied Linguistics, Inner Circle, Multilingual Matters, The Hague, Birch Moonwomon, Muriel Saville-Troike, Ann Arbor, University of Pennsylvania Press

Phonetic Symbol Guide is a comprehensive and authoritative encyclopedia of phonetic alphabet symbols, providing a complete survey of the hundreds of c

ORDER HERE:

The PHONETIC SYMBOL GUIDE of Geoffrey K. Pullum and William A. Ladusaw is a quick reference for anyone wishing to see what a given symbol represents in IPA or American Usage. It is easy to use, for it is an a-z listing of symbols, i.e. all symbols which look similar to a given English letter are grouped together, followed by symbols which cannot be placed in alphabetical order. There is a concise glossary of phonetic terms, and finally charts of several methods of transcription.

The work is generally satisfactory, but it is imperfect. In its discussion of IPA the Guide might be seen as historically superseded, for the IPA subsequently released its own official Handbook, which is less easy to use than the work of Pullum and Ladusaw but perhaps more reliable. With regard to other usage, I was disappointed to find that there was no information on the use of certain symbols in Finno-Ugric/Uralic phonetic alphabets. In fact, outside of IPA and American usage there isn't much information. The book may have well ballooned to twice its size if more usage was added, but it would have made the book a much more useful reference.

If one frequently works with American transcriptions of speech, the PHONETIC SYMBOL GUIDE might be an excellent reference to get. People concerned with the IPA should probably simply get the HANDBOOK OF THE INTERNATIONAL PHONETIC ASSOCIATION.
superimposed hyphen, cardinal vowel corresponding, palatal median approximant, other retroflex consonants, overdot diacritic, typographical substitute, median fricative, laminai fricative, wedge diacritic, suprasegmental symbols, bridge diacritic, voiceless glottalic ingressive, velaric ingressive stop, umlaut diacritic, low front rounded vowel, subscript arch, small capital font, phonotypic alphabet, obvious visual analogy, rightward hook, reversed epsilon, central rounded vowel, backed velar, nasalization diacritic, voiceless implosives

This book is designed for readers who wish to pursue the study of phonetics from an initial to an advanced stage

ORDER HERE:

I'm a phonetics instructor, and I used this book as a sort of personal in-service training course during a break between semesters. I have been through many similar books, so much of the material was familiar, but there was also a great deal that was fresh and new for me. The book touches on some acoustic, auditory and physiological issues, but its main thrust is articulatory phonetics. It includes many excellent line drawings of the vocal tract.

The book gets off to something of a slow start, since there is a lot of background material somewhat peripheral to phonetics itself in the first three chapters, comprising part I. The main topics covered are semiotics, the different levels of speech production, and accent and dialect. It is all useful, but it left me anxious to get to the meat of the book.

Laver's use of Pike's 'contoid' and 'vocoid' categories sounded a bit sci-fi to me, but it's good to see familiar concepts analyzed in a somewhat different way. Laver will often spend time citing examples of unusual sounds, e.g. linguo-labials, where other books either omit or gloss over them quickly. The index of languages (Appendix II), is very helpful in putting into context some of the more exotic languages the examples come from. I especially appreciated the section on pulmonic ingressives (p. 168-170) since I had observed examples of these myself in northern German. I hadn't heard about their use in the Formosan language Tsou before, though I live in Taiwan.

Coarticulatory phenomena receive quite thorough treatment. The book also features a substantial section on prosody, an area that some other works tend to be weak in, and included in-depth examinations and discussions of duration, pitch, loudness, stress, and rate of speech.

The content, organization, and writing of this book are impeccable, and always clear. The only one slight drawback I found is the book's rigorous academic style, which is mainly a strength, but it can make for rather dry reading. Chapter 8, 'Stop articulations', and chapter 13, 'Intersegmental co-ordination' were longer than the other chapters, and dragged a bit for me.

Overall, I recommend this book highly as part of the canon every aspiring phonetician should cover, though I wouldn't choose this as a first work to read in phonetics - Ladefoged goes down more easily, in my view. _Principles_ is, however, a very rich and definitely worthwhile reference to have in your personal linguistics library.

trilled stop, vocoid articulations, fixed lexical stress, phonatory state, prosodic settings, medial phase, monosystemic approach, anticipatory nasality, close vocoids, general phonetic transcription, alveolar lateral resonant, open vocoids, rhotic segments, flapped stop, voiced implosive stops, voiceless vocoids, general phonetic theory, overall muscular tension, nasal setting, oral vocoids, paralinguistic purposes, resonant segments, velopharyngeal settings, breath phonation, central vocoid
American English, British English, Received Pronunciation, United States, Scottish Gaelic, Standard English, General American, North America, West Africa, International Phonetic Association, Brazilian Portuguese, Daniel Jones, Kiel Convention, Qatari Arabic, Central America, Bella Coola, Down's Syndrome, Category Setting, New York, Pacific Northwest, East Africa, Labial Dental Dent, Mackenzie Beck, Scottish English, New England

Accents of English is about the way English is pronounced by different people in different places

ORDER HERE:

Accents and dialectology can be pursued as a gigantic sequence of unrelated facts. Wells knows his facts, all right, probably better than anyone else, but what really distinguishes this book (the first of a three-volume series) is how Wells rigorously integrates his facts into a systematic pattern, based on the history of the English dialects and their descent from a common ancestor. It's superbly organised, providing word lists at the beginning of every chaptre, which gives you a great idea of how different accents compare on identical sets of words. The intro about different styles and registers of Received Pronunciation, including grammatical points, is also of great help to understand how accents may differ. The tape is a must, and the dialogues in it are great, since they were recorded in a very spontaneous manner. OK, so, the sound's quality is not the best around, but you get spontaneous dialogues (and therefore more natural dialectal pronunciations) in exchange. The only problem I'd see is that is that stylistic varieties are not covered more in depth. J.C. Wells' "English Accents: An Introduction" and "English Accents: The Brittish Isles" offer a lot more information, cover more nuances of accent, and are in general more complete that this book. This original study explores the important role of language in various aspects of our social life, such as identity, gender relations, class, kinship, status, and hierarchies. Drawing on data from over thirty different languages and societies, it shows how language is more than simply a form of social action; it is also an effective tool with which we formulate models of social life and conduct. These models - or particular forms of social behaviour - are linked to the classification of 'types' of action or actor, and are passed 'reflexively' from person to person, and from generation to generation. Providing a novel and unified way of accounting for a variety of social phenomena, this book will be welcomed by all those interested in the interaction between language, culture, and society.
Offers a surprisingly comprehensive view of language in society, one that works in some of the fundamental insights and concepts of linguistic anthropology, like indexicality, performativity, and other buzzwords.

metapragmatic stereotypes, denotational stereotypes, interactional tropes, fractional congruence, characterological figures, metasemiotic discourses, stereotypic denotation, denotational norms, metapragmatic data, performable signs, phonolexical registers, role inhabitance, honorific lexemes, demeanor indexicals, denotational correctness, metasemiotic activity, metasemiotic treatment, stereotypic values, metapragmatic typifications, conjoined focus, denotational units, hijrah village, lexemic forms, metadiscursive labels, stereotypic emblems

The unique collection books -a set of the key terms and definitions by many of the leading scholars in linguistics antropology

ORDER HERE:

"Exploratory, generous, clear, and provocative, Key Terms in Language and Culture is an invaluable resource for any scholar concerned with the role and shape of language and communication in human lives, both present and past. The third edition of Language, Culture, and Society continues to address the full spectrum of fundamental topics in linguistic anthropology. Because anthropology stresses a holistic view, the integration of data from all subfields of anthropology and related fields is evident throughout the book. The new edition is enriched by deeper considerations of linguistic profiling and language prejudice, linguistic pluralism in the United States, intercultural communication, and endangered languages and language death. The final chapter is devoted to applied linguistic anthropology. Four new problems of linguistic reconstruction and 22 new "Questions for Discussion" further enhance the Third Edition’s classroom appeal.

About the Author
Zdenek Salzmann, a native of Prague, is professor emeritus of anthropology at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. It encompasses the entire spectrum of sociolinguistics, including such topics as the Whorfian Hypothesis, politeness, and language planning, in addition to the usual standard topics of language variation and pidgins and creoles. It also covers a wide range of languages and issues, going far beyond the usual North American and British topics. Included are a 25 page bibliography as well as specific suggestions for further reading at the end of each chapter. The writing is usual quite clear and certainly less wordy than Hudson's introductory sociolinguistics text. Interspersed throughout the book, at the end of each minor chapter section, are "Discussion" questions. These questions are intended to get the reader to give some more thought to the issues being discussed. The questions vary greatly in difficulty, from those that any undergraduate linguistics student should be able to answer through a little introspection, to quite a few that could be dissertation topics in themselves. Occasionally, Wardhaugh suggests where the reader could get further information necessary to answer these questions, but frequent lack of such clear advice may leave readers (and instructors) frustrated. This is an ever-changing, ever-evolving language which is like a code that tends to segregate non-native speakers. Street Talk 1, 2, and 3 are designed to open these seemingly closed doors quickly and help the non-native speaker integrate into American culture.

However, after learning everyday American slang and idioms, the business traveler is faced with an additional obstacle which MUST be conquered in order to transact business effectively in America.

Biz Talk 1 presents some of the most popular business slang terms and jargon which have infiltrated just about every profession and business situation. Without an understanding of this type of lingo, any non-native speaker conducting business in America is at a grave disadvantage, especially during important meetings and negations where is common to hear expressions like:
"to have the floor"
"to stonewall"
"to brainstorm"
"to table a discussion"

This is only the beginning! Biz Talk 1 not only dedicates an entire chapter to slang and jargon used in meetings and negotiations, but also focuses on the lingo used in finance, marketing, advertising, computerese, business travel, sports terms used in business, offices in general, office parties, and more!

Biz Talk 1 takes a close look at the most popular terms and expressions used in American business as well as business terms adopted into everyday speech used by virtually everyone.

This easy-to-use textbook/workbook is divided into four parts:

Dialogue: Approximately twenty new business expressions and slang terms (indicated in boldface) are presented as they may be heard in an actual conversation. A translation of the dialogue in standard English is always given on the opposite page followed by an important phonetic version of the dialogue as it would actually be spoken by a native-born American. This page will prove vital to any non-native speakers since Americans tend to rely heavily on contractions, reductions, and shortcuts in pronunciation.

Vocabulary: This section spotlights all of the slang words and expressions that were used in the dialogue and offers more examples of usage, synonyms, antonyms, and special notes.

Practice the Vocabulary: These word games include all of the new terms and idioms previously learned and will held you to test yourself on your comprehension. (The pages providing the answers to all the drills are indicated at the beginning of this section.) A Closer Look: This section offers the reader a further in-depth look at common words used in slang expressions pertaining to the chapter's category.

If you've conquered the task of learning everyday American slang, you will undoubtedly be somewhat surprised to encounter a whole new world of colorful business phrases and terms usually reserve only for the native speaker...until now!

--David Burke

A dictionary second edition of understanding american business jargon by w.davis folsom

ORDER HERE:

As he humbly admits in his preface, author Folsom is definitely not a lexicographer, so this book, which updates a 1997 edition, is not the place to look for scholarly definitions. For example, catch a falling knife is explained simply as "buy when the stock market is falling," and put out to pasture as "pressure someone to retire." Some definitions--and it is unclear why some and not others--are accompanied by citations to usage examples in publications such as the Wall Street Journal and Maclean's. Its goal is to provide a comprehensive survey of the current state of the field, the many connections among its various sub-disciplines, and the likely directions of its future development. The Oxford Handbook of Applied Linguistics addresses a broad audience: applied linguists; educators and other scholars working in language acquisition, language learning, language planning, teaching, and testing; and linguists concerned with applications of their work. Early applied linguistics was predominantly associated with language-teaching. While this relationship continues, the field has long since diversified, becoming increasingly inter-related and multi-disciplinary. The volume addresses the diversity of questions facing applied linguists today: What is the place of applied linguistics in the architecture of the university? Where does applied linguistics fit into the sociology of knowledge? What are the questions that applied linguistics ought to be addressing? What are the dominant paradigms guiding research in the field? What kinds of problems can be solved through the mediation of applied linguistics? What aspects of linguistics can be empirically applied to language-based problems, and what spaces resist such application? What will new students of applied linguistics need to know in the coming years? Systematically encompassing the major areas of applied linguistics-and drawing from a wide range of disciplines such as education, language policy, bi- and multi-lingualism, literacy, language and gender, psycholinguistics/cognition, language and computers, discourse analysis, language and concordinances, ecology of language, pragmatics, translation, psycholinguistics and cognition, and many other fields-the editors and contributors to The Oxford Handbook of Applied Linguistics provide a panoramic and comprehensive look at this complex and vigorous field.

language sentence processing, sociocultural selection device, overall test design, language spread policy, bilingual word recognition, language spread studies, affect lexical selection, sentence processing research, language contact research, large recognition vocabulary, language learning potential, language planning activities, language learning motivation, interlingual homographs, nonselective access, second language writing, language revitalization, reversing language shift, second language research, language planning efforts, interactional modifications, interlingual identifications, second language acquisition, language learning strategies, preverbal message

An Intercultural Approach to English Language Teaching (Languages for Intercultural Communication and Education, 7)

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" Cooperative Learning in Second Language Teaching is a comprehensive overview, suitable for MA TESOL programs and for in-service teachers. Part I provides a grounding for collaborative/cooperative learning by discussing the educational research, issues that surround its implementation, and how it relates to theories of second language learning. Part II is a series of six narrative chapters written by teachers from around the world. These teachers share their experiences using cooperative learning in their classrooms, demonstrating the effectiveness of this approach, in both second and foreign language contexts, for elementary, secondary and post-secondary levels of instruction. An appendix outlining the techniques in these chapters is also included.

Book Description
In this original text, case histories demonstrate the effectiveness of the cooperative learning approach in both second and foreign language contexts for elementary through post-secondary levels.

Advocating for English Learners: Selected Essays

Advocating for English Learners: Selected Essays (Bilingual Education & Bilingualism)

Product Description
A collection of 18 essays addressing the policy and politics of educating English language learners. As we battle spiritually the enemy, this book helps give us practical verses to cling to from the Bible to help in our feelings so we can claim and SPEAK the Word of God outloud.

I like in the beginning of her book where she says the Bible is a double edged sword: one edge cuts the enemy and the other cuts open the blessings of heaven. What a neat illustration.

I'm finding in my daily walk those verses very helpful for the often tough situations I am in. It helps me in my faith.
