Once Upon In AT Taqwa Orphanage

It is two months I do not write anything in this blog because sometimes writing is so hard to do so I try to force my self and my friends club to write about anything they know. Sometimes I think what about if member of this club have custom to write and it would be great for this blog because every week the club has activity and what about if I and others write about the activity it self, maybe it could be about discussion summary or just activity report, I think and guarantee that this blog is gotta be full of writings. Wow what a wonderfull. But the reality is not easy because not everyone can write like writer or journalist and if they can write, sometimes the intensity of writing it self is not sustained day-by-day or week-by-week. Can you see the intensity of this blog?. The last activity we write about Gambian and Bangla student visited us and it was six months ago.

Actually this time I do not write about how to be good writer and constantly, because I admit that I am not good one in writing and moreover the writing that I wrote before is in English form. What I wrote was because this club is English club so I have to write in English. But this time what I want to write is about information, information about what we did in 11 may 2009, we did social work in AT Taqwa and Nurul Qura’an Orphanage.

The activity in orphanage itself was started at 10 am. Firstly we introduced our club and members’ name and then we encourage them (children) to speak in English even though they have poor grammar we don’t care. The point is we have to speak. If they speak and blend to Bahasa or Javaness language we still don’t care because our club have one principle: “if you want to be a good one in speaking English the first one you have to do is just speak up, no matter poor grammar you have”. The fact was they want to speak even they don’t know how to use grammar correctly but we felt happy. They ask anything, such as how to speak and tips to speak. We gave our experience to share like Keyko is friend of mine shared how to speak with foreigner.

The activity didn’t stop in introduction but we made some games to them and if they could answer our question we would gave some souvenirs to them, the souvenir it self is book, pen and new edition of KangGuru Radio English Magazine as a form of our supports to them in learning English.

But there was something touched right over there when we encourage them to write letter in English to us and read it in front of all of us. They write about their sadness of losing their parents, and how hard this life for them. They struggle for their life, for their study, for living, for their dreaming and we can’t say anything when we listened their experience. What we can do is sharing about what we have. That is why we were in orphanage yesterday.

A truck driver was driving 100 penguins to the New York Zoo when his truck broke down on the freeway. The driver got out of the cab and was looking at the engine when a second truck driver stopped in front of him and asked if he needed any help. The penguins' driver explained that he is taking the penguins to the zoo and asked if the other man would take the penguins there. He agreed. Some hours later, the second truck driver drove past the first one, who was still waiting on the freeway for help to come. The penguins, however, were still on the truck! "I thought I asked you to take those penguins to the zoo," shouted the first driver. The second replied, "I did, but I had some money left, so we're going to the cinema now."

A meteor, as everybody knows, is a falling star. Funny as it may seem, though, the word meteorology has nothing to do with falling stars. The definition of meteorology is; the scientific study of the processes that cause particular weather conditions. So, the keyword seems to be weather rather than falling star. Now, a lot of things have to do with the weather, such as the wind, clouds, moon, sky, and sun. In Commemoration of Meteorology Day on March 23. we want to talk about English Idioms that focus on these weather words. Who knows, maybe you can use them to sound really cool.

Weather

Be under the weather = to be sick, unwell.

Ex, Having missed several nights of sleep, the reporter seemed a bit under the weather.

KangGuru Culture On Tour With ESC

Wow.., this month was so great for English Society Club (ESC). It was caused by many activities that we had done and still having plan to do at the end of this month. We was visited PPPPTK Seni dan Budaya Jogyakarta to meet some of the new students of Darmasiswa Foreign Exchange Students 2007/ 2008. We – English Society Club (ESC) – promoted KGRE and invited them to join in my program for this month. Thank God we made it. And right after that we visited some school in Semarang and Temanggung and doing cultural exchange. And these were our activity:

“KangGuru Culture on Tour 2007”
November 17 – 19, 2007.

/First Day/

1. SMK PALEBON SEMARANG

We started at 11 am and finished at 5 pm. There were some Darmasiswa Students, which are Mr. Reaz Khan from Bangladesh, Mr. Gibriel Badjie, Mr. Ebrima Sarr, and Mr. Pa Modou Soy from The Gambia, West of Africa.

It was really great surprised for us when the students of SMK Palebon Standing in front of the gate and singing a joyful welcome song for us. They also made really nice postures that showed about their hospitality for the Darmasiswa Students. And it was great meeting because school committee and the chairman of Wiyata Tama Organization attended the program. We were so proud of that.

We started by promoting the KGRE and ESC. I was enco

uraging them to be brave on learning English. Beside that we gave them a great experienced to meet with the foreigners and they asked to foreigners about their country, culture, education system, social, and etc. The Bangladeshi and The Gambian felt surprised with many questions they got from SMK Palebon students and commented about how brilliant they are. And then we gave them the souvenirs as a reward for students who have a brave to ask the question.

Then The Gambian, Mr. Mo dou, Gibriel, Ebrima talked about their country and their culture. And it was so interested for us when they said that polygamy is common thing and legal there. It’s also like part of the culture there, not only that, they also performed their nationality song too.

Mostly students interested to know about the meaning of their flag colour.

Red has a meaning of the sun. The Gambia has a beautiful country with many tourist destinations.
White means peace. Because most of the Gambian are Moslem and Islam always teach us how to live in love and peace.
Blue means river. Because many river surround Gambia and it is very important for the Gambian who lived in their country. They also realize that the river is one of their natural resources.
Green means agriculture.

Beside The Gambia was presented by Gambian people, the students felt curious about Mr. Reaz country, which is Bangladesh. Mr. Reaz talked about many things of his beloved country such as culture, history and character of his people but most of them he talked about culture. One student asked the question to him whether he had family blood with Sahrukh Khan, the famous Indian actor?. Then he said with a little bit jokes that certainly he’s a brother of Sahrukh Khan. Students and the others were lau

ghing out loud when they knew that he lied about.

He talked about Bangladeshi foods, such as: Chicken Curry, Mogli, Porata, Pulau and many more. He told us that he got problem with the Indonesian food because most of the tastes of Indonesian food are sweet especially Javanese food.

When his friends from The Gambia explained about their national flag, he was also didn’t miss to explained about the meaning of his flag colour. He told that Bangladesh National flag consists of a circle red throughout its area, rested on a green rectangular background. The length to

width ratio of the rectangle is 10 : 6 and the circle has a radius of one of fifth of the length. Its centre is placed on the intersecting point of the perpendicular drawn from the nine-twentieth port of the length of the flag and the horizontal line drawn through the middle of its width. Prescribed sizes of flag for building are: 305 cm x 183 cm, 152 x 91 cm and 76 cm x 46 cm and for cars: 38 cm x 23 cm and 25 cm x 15 cm.

Then he also sang his nationality anthem: Amor Sonar Bangla. Everybody stood up and listened carefully, then its time for me and also students and teachers san

g our nationality anthem: Indonesia Raya. After that the chairman of wiyata Tama Organization that coordinate SMK Palebon gave placards for our guests from Gambia and Bangladesh before finishing our first program at SMK Palebon Semarang.

Next, in the same day, some of teachers of SMK Palebon took us to visit their student on their job-training place. We also had a little discussion with the assistance manager of Matahari Dept. Store, Simpang 5 Semarang. He took us to meet their students. So SMK Palebon cooperates with many companies for their dual education program (magang kerja). It’s great ya..!!!.

From the Matahari Dept Store in Simpang 5 Semarang, me and Darmasiswa students preparing for our broadcast in RRI pro 2 FM Semarang, English Time K2K Show. We discussed about about Darmasiswa program, KGRE and of course cultural program. They also interested in our interactive program. It was so great experienced for the Gambian and the Bangladeshi, because that was their first experienced to broadcast on the Indonesian radio.

After dinner we went again to Ar-Rohman Orphanage wit

h some of ESC members. We gave the donation and danced with the kids there. Some of the kids played Arabian music and then Darmasiswa and ESC members dancing with the kids together.

/Second Day/

After our experiences in first day with The Gambian and The Bangladeshi we had our cultural exchange program in our second day, which was located in RRI Sema

rang, Jl. A. Yani 144 – 146 Semarang. At 18 November 2007, started at 8am – 7pm. Participans were ESC members, MA Hasyim As Ari Students from Bangsri - Jepara, Darmasiswa Students, and Paguyuban Sekar Budaya Muda.

We made interactive conversation with participants each other. ESC and MA Hasyim As Ari asked to The Gambian and The Bangladeshi about their country, culture, food, and their people in their country itself. The Gambian and The Bangladeshi did not only answer our question but they asked us back about what Indonesian have, such as our country history and our culture which they li

ke so much, thruthly.

This meeting was not only talking each other but some participants had performance to present too. ESC performed about our interest in singing some songs such as Can’t Take My Eyes Of You. And everybody came and joined with us in singing too, at the time. After that, MA Hasyim As Ari from Jepara also had a performance, a short comedy, which was so cheerful comedy because they entertained many participants and they made everybody laughed together. And next Javanese traditional game dance called Cublak-Cublak Suweng by ESC members.

After all these activities that we did, Paguyuban Sekar Budaya also presented their performance, it was Jaran Kepang or Kuda Lumping. Many attractions they played, such as: ate the glass with mouth, ate the glass, fire and drink the gasoline, dancing with Warog Mask, and the last action was opened the big coconut that they ate with teeth. It was so amazing for us because it was a dangerous attraction and something like not normal action, but it is a culture.

Our next activity at the time was City Tour. We had

City Tour because we also wanted to promote some of tourist destination in Semarang and not only that, because we tried our skills being a tour guide to our guests but we much more like to be called a friend than a tour guide because we like to make a friendship. Our route at the time, it were Sam Po Kong, House of 1000 doors (Lawang Sewu), Semarang Old Town, and Central Java Grand Mosque. Wow…. It was a hard day, right!

/Third Day/

We start trip at 8am from Semarang by Bus. And we visited SMU Negeri 1 Temanggung. We were so surprise, when we saw many students were so aggressive and active. They made the foreign students tired to answer their question, and they also asked me about KGRE. We gave the souvenirs for the students and CD for the school. Unfortunately there is no English club yet in SMUN 1 Temanggung, so we told them how to apply for KGCC and the benefits join it. We had great story when we were in that school because many student had great enthusiasm to learn and speak in English. The one who still have a great enthusiasm is Infra, one of SMUN 1 Temanggung students. She is a young broadcaster in school radio. She conducted the Sunday Fun at noon in OFA FRA (radio school). It is an interactive program. She hope we can come and visit her again because she loves to make conversation to us.

That was the end of KangGuru Culture on Tour 2007. We’d like to say Thank to Allah SWT, none has the right to be worshipped but You, and also some friends from ESC members, Darmasiswa Students, SMK Palebon Students, MA. Hasyim As Ari from Jepara and SMUN 1 Temanggung. Those people had made this world so lovely to us, even though what we made is a conversation only, off course in English language or some social works. Thanks a lot, mate.

A Story With KGRE, UMY, and Darmasiswa Students

KGRE visited clubs in Java, Sulawesi and Lombok. Kevin, Sue, and Cheryl brought back stories about active clubs and energetic club leaders and members; one of another is English Society Club in Semarang.

Kevin’s visit was to a special event at Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY), home of Student English Activity UMY. Members of this club and English Society Club from Semarang organized a cultural day, with students and other guests from Slovakia, the Philippines, South Africa, Bangladesh and Australia. Guest students are all studying under a scheme called Dharma Siswa From the Indonesian Departement of Education. These scholarships are available to students in Australia and many other countries such as Bangladesh and South Africa.

The international students then began giving information about life in their countries and accepting questions from the audience. A few of them even sang traditional songs from their own countries. Sabbir from Bangladesh began the session with two songs – one was a love song and the other a religious song from his home country of Bangladesh. He was terrific. Three of his friends then joined him to answer questions. They certainly informed everyone about life in their home country.

Keyko, the newest KGRE Champion, and the leader of public relation of ESC in Semarang, then talked about traditional food from Semarang and in particular, lumpia made with baby bamboo shoots – a Semarang delight she said.

There were also cultural performance from the Indonesian participants including dances, role-plays and vocal performances.

Three visitors from South Africa also spoke about life in their country. That was fascinating as they were very keen to explain that the view of South Africa is being full of elephants and lions was not quite true. In fact it became obvious as people listened to the visitors that other countries are not always as we think.

Stereotyped impressions of other cultures and other people are generally wrong or at the least, misleading. Information about lifestyle and culture of other countries is revealed when different cultures get together and discuss, compare and enjoy their differences.

It was very successful and a good example of language clubs working together. Congratulations to the members of both clubs.

ESC has a very active social work program. Sometimes this involves visiting a local orphanage where the club members teach the children English through fun activities such as songs and games.

However, after the May earthquake the club went to Jogjakarta area to help with the clean up. They worked alongside other volunteers from Wahid Hasyim University and Pondok Pesantren Sunan Kalijaga. They spent time in Sleman and then in Klaten, helping the local people in man ways. They divided themselves into four teams: the reconstruction team, the medical team, the psychological team and happy team. They also did live radio reports from the site for the interactive English program on RRI Pro 2 FM Semarang and helped with fund raising.

Here’s what Keyko – PR Division of ESC - from the English Society Club commented to KGRE ‘Through this disaster we would like to say our gratitude to all the victims of Central Java earthquake since they have taught us to be grateful, accept the condition whether it is good bad and how to handle it. Here, we also learn how to share with others as although all the survivors were in such a terrible condition, still they share food with another place, which was in worse condition and out of reach from government’s help and also for us. Even though they were in difficult moments they still have time to think of others. What wise people’.

ESC Activities

Regular activities :

Play creative games such as ‘Supermarket Games’, Throw the Bottle, and Dance, Play and pause (usually with foreigners) etc.
Gossiping and chatting: For fun we sometimes try to ‘match-make’ for the members because we have some couples and some of them have even married.
Discussion topics: environment, politics, love, teen’s problem, latest music, the future etc.
Discuss and understand English through listening to KGRE, completing ‘listening and reading class set’ materials, singing, etc.
Lunch: we often have lunch together as a group too.
Celebration: we also make a celebration such as; birthday members or helping to make up marriage party of members.

Special Activities:

Monthly: Invite a guest from abroad we call ‘Londo of The Month’ (if available).
Every three months: Outdoors meeting (excursions, KGRE and club promotions, KGCC Get Together).
Yearly: New Years Eve party, Valentine’s Day party, Thanksgiving (sharing gifts), Lebaran (Halal Bi Halal) and Christmas party.
Social work: Teaching English in the orphanages for a month, giving donations for orphanage or voluntary services, helping the Red Cross, helping other clubs with local work such as in Yogyakarta for the earthquake victims.

English Society Club is located at, and supported by, RRI Semarang. Members meet every Sunday at 10 am in the Karawitan Room of RRI Semarang or in front of RRI’s mosque. ESC has about 10 – 50 active members including senior high school students, college students, workers, and even housewives. Besides the core committee we have three other committees – public relations, the education division (discussion division), and general affairs (administration division).

The club is closely aligned to RRI’s English language interactive program, which broadcast every Saturday night at 6pm to 7pm on FM 95.3 MHz. Members under guidance of leader Mr. Toto as an ESC Chairman, Ms. Keyko as a leader of public relation, Ms. Tanti as a leader of administration division, and also be assisted by Mr. Ade, Mr. Henry, Ms. Anin, Mr. Agung as a discussion team, are interested in social works and conducting outdoor meetings such as excursions.
