Refined Electric Bikes

2011-05-03T23:04:00.000-07:00

Electric bikes are beginning to improve in power and efficiency and no longer appear obviously electrified. The NEO family of bikes represents an evolution that’s rugged, easy to operate and for the most part, driven by technology transparent to the rider. The battery and control mechanism have been moved to the down tube improving center of gravity and looking less conspicuous. Easily removable and can be recharged at home.

Monster On Rescue Mission

2011-05-03T23:02:00.001-07:00

Monash student Damien believes that by 2025 our urban infrastructure is going to be under considerable strains, which is why our streets are going to be jam-packed with traffic most of the time. Providing speedy Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to victims will require funky reconnaissance and first aid vehicles like the Re:Veive. Agile and nimble, its soft silicon body houses a quadrapedial hydraulics system that allows it to navigate through traffic by literally standing up and walking thru.

Thanks to the hydraulics system, it can even traverse dividers and operate under flood conditions. The in-house communication set up allows it to coordinate with ambulances and other essential services. The modular interior design allows medical supplies to be quickly, sterilized, refitted and easily tailored to any EMS task.
The car looks super awesome, but my question is…are we still going to have killing traffic in the future? Have we not learnt anything from our infrastructure mistakes now?

When Riding A Bicycle Just Isn’t Green Enough

2011-05-03T23:01:00.001-07:00

If you’ve ever felt the urge to attach a fender to your bike just so you can wrap it in environmentally-aware bumper stickers, then you might like the Green Shadow. Developed by Mr. Onuff Studio for a video game, the bicycle still stands as an interesting study in form and function, presumably tracking mileage, heat rate and calories through the handle-bar mounted LCD. While only intended as illustrative work and not for actual production, I can only imagine a real version would incorporate fresh ivory, baby seals or endangered pandas to help snag that valuable pro-earth, anti-animal demographic.

Locksit – Bicycle Security by Jack Godfrey Wood

2011-05-03T23:00:00.001-07:00

Locksit is a design-against-crime influenced saddle that immobilizes the bicycle and avoids the need to carry your saddle around with you. Cyclists now only need to take one lock with them (to secure the frame and front wheel) making cycling and parking easier, quicker and more convenient.
1: Unlock lock to release U-bar. 2+3: Push pins inwards to allow seatpost to pivot about the hinge. 4: Place U-bar around the tyre and rim of the back wheel. Insert U-bar into its socket and lock using the key. The bicycle is now immobilized and the saddle secure. 5: Lock the frame and front wheel to an immovable object. Bicycle is now secure.

Lighting The Oceans With Wave Power

2011-05-03T22:54:00.000-07:00

The Wavelight concept coverts mechanical energy captured by ocean waves into electrical energy to illuminate a series of LED lamps. Each lamp is tethered to its neighbor with a weight anchored to the sea floor. The lights are designed to attract attention for rescue operations or to warn passing ships to steer clear. A very intriguing design but are LEDs powerful enough? What happens if the anchor isn’t long enough to reach the sea floor?

In 2020 We Can Wear Sony Computers On Our Wrist

2011-05-03T22:52:00.000-07:00

profound that secondary devices like the Nextep Computer are bound to happen. Developed to be worn as a bracelet, this computer concept is constructed out of a flexible OLED touchscreen. Earmarked for the year 2020, features like a holographic projector (for screen), pull-out extra keyboard panels and social networking compatibility, make the concept plausible. Ten years from now is not too far away, so how many of you think we’d be buying such gadgets?

Think before you act

2011-02-09T05:29:00.000-08:00

A Young lady was waiting for her flight in the boarding room of a big airport. As she would need to wait many hours, she decided to buy a book to spend her time. She also bought a packet of cookies. She sat down in an armchair, in the VIP room of the airport, to rest and read in peace.

Besides the armchair where the packet of cookies lay, a man sat down in the next seat, opened his magazine and started reading. When she took out the first cookie, the man took one also. She felt irritated but said nothing. She just thought: “What a nerve! If i was in the mood i would punch him for darling!”. For each cookie she took, the man took one too.

This was infuriating her but she didn’t want to cause a scene. When only one cookie remained, she thought: “ah.. What this abusive man do now?”. Then, the man, taking the last cookie, divided it into half, giving her one half.

Ah!

Thats was too much! She was too angry now!.

In a huff, she took her book, her things and stormed to the boarding place.

When she sat down in her seat, inside the plane, she looked into her purse to take her eyeglasses, and, to her surprise, her packet of cookies was there, untouched, unopened!

She felt so ashamed!! She realized that she was wrong…..

She had forgotten that her cookies were kept in her purse. The man divided his cookies with her, without feeling angered or bitter.

…While she had been angry, thinking that she was dividing her cookies with him. And now there was no chance to explain herself ..nor to apologize.

Burn 300 calories in 10 minutes

2010-12-21T04:34:00.001-08:00

Use this workout to drop weight around a hectic schedule
Time poor and flab rich?

Finding the time to exercise is rarely easy, which is why we at Men’s Health provide you with a selection of 15-minute workouts to suit all training goals. But if you can’t even squeeze in quarter of an hour at the gym, what’s the best way to sear off fat in the shortest possible amount of time? Sports scientist Christian Finn presents a simple three-move no-equipment routine which should allow you to burn up to 300 calories over a 10-minute period.

1 Jump squats
Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and your arms at your sides. Start by doing a regular squat and then jump up as high as you can while reaching for the ceiling. Upon landing, lower your body into the squat position and repeat. Resist the urge to scream “Yippee!” upon takeoff.

Beginner 10 reps and 30 secs rest before the next exercise
As you improve Gradually increase the reps and decrease the rest time until…
Superfit 30 reps and 10 secs rest
2 Spider-Man press-ups
Start in the regular press-up position. As you lower yourself, bring your knee up outside your body to hip level. Return to the starting position and repeat using the other leg. These aren’t as fun as upside-down tongue tussles with Kirsten Dunst, but they will get you in shape faster.

Beginner 10 reps and 30 secs rest before the next exercise
As you improve Gradually increase the reps and decrease the rest time until…
Superfit 25 reps and 10 secs rest
3 Sprints
Use the Borg Scale to monitor your intensity. Developed by Swedish scientist Gunnar Borg, this rating of perceived exertion is your inner feeling of how
hard you are working. “It isn't a measure of how tired your legs are or how hard you are breathing, but rather your total perception of effort,” explains Finn. On the Borg scale, the perceived effort is assigned a rating between 1 and 10, with 10 as maximum effort and 1 as no effort at all. During the sprints, aim for a rating of 8.

Beginner Sprint for 10 secs and rest for 30 secs before the next exercise
As you improve Gradually increase the sprint time and decrease the rest time until…
Superfit Sprint for 20 secs and rest for 10 secs
Everything in its right place
Sequence the three exercises in the following way, advises Finn:

Jump squats
Spider-Man press-ups
Sprints
Spider-Man press-ups
Repeat

“You're alternating upper body dominant and lower body dominant exercises in order to maximise the amount of work your body can physically manage,” says Finn. “Trying to do ‘all out’ sprints followed by jump squats would leave most people totally wiped out.” Sounds a bit like a challenge, that…

Top 10 Leaks of WikiLeaks

2010-12-06T02:03:00.001-08:00

We all like to assume our e-mail is private, but Sarah Palin learned the hard way that it’s not always the case. In September 2008, someone hacked into the then vice presidential candidate’s personal Yahoo! account, gov.palin@yahoo.com, and posted some of her messages, her password and contact list to WikiLeaks. Though the messages quickly made their way around the Internet, the e-mails turned out to be little more than goofy family photos and a few letters to political colleagues.

The hacker was found to be 22-year-old David Kernell, the son of a Tennessee legislator (and Democrat). Kernell was found guilty on April 30, 2010, of obstruction of justice and unauthorized access to a computer, but was acquitted of the greater charge of wire fraud. He is due to be sentenced Sept. 24 and will likely face up to 21 months behind bars.
Leaking her identity to the press was no small act — it compromised her work with the agency and was seen as a slap on Wilson’s wrist for speaking out of turn. It also led many observers to believe that the White House had rushed to war using only the most politically expedient snippets of intelligence. An inquiry into the leaks went all the way to the upper echelons of the Bush brain trust — eventually, Lewis “Scooter” Libby, aide to Karl Rove, was found guilty in 2007 on counts of perjury, obstruction of justice and making false statements. President Bush commuted Libby’s 30-month prison sentence.
On Nov. 28, WikiLeaks released a massive cache of secret diplomatic cables divulging private conversations between world leaders. Lets looks at other famous leaks that were often as damning as they were sensational.

9. Lil Wayne’s The Leak
Most musicians get upset when their albums leak to the Internet, but not Lil Wayne. When several tracks off his then upcoming album Tha Carter III surfaced on the Internet in 2007, the rapper responded by pushing back Carter’s release date and issuing the leaked tracks as their own separate album, appropriately titled The Leak. The album’s cover art even incorporated the phrase “Lil Wayne Approved.” At least someone in the music industry still has a sense of humor

8. The Apache Helicopter Shooting
WikiLeaks has had a pretty notable year, starting with the airing in April of footage from July 2007 that showed a U.S. Apache helicopter shooting and killing Reuters photographer Namir Noor-Eldeen in Baghdad. Noor-Eldeen’s driver and 10 others were also killed after soldiers mistook his camera for a weapon and the men for insurgents. The Iraqi Journalists’ Union and the New York City–based Committee to Protect Journalists have called for an investigation into the actions of the troops on board the copter. While an early inquiry found no wrongdoing, U.S. military lawyers announced they would review the video once more, though no formal report has been released yet. The military whistle-blower responsible for releasing the classified video to WikiLeaks — 22-year-old U.S. Army intelligence analyst Bradley Manning — was arrested in May and later charged with 12 counts of illegally transferring classified data onto his personal computer and then providing it to an unauthorized source. WikiLeaks has hired lawyers to defend Manning but claims they have not been allowed access to him.

7. McChrystal’s War Plan
Eight months after taking office, President Obama ordered General Stanley McChrystal, his new commander in Afghanistan, to review the entire war. From McChrystal’s report, Obama learned that without more troops and a drastic change in strategy, the war would be lost. The only problem is, we all learned that too. Watergate legend Bob Woodward proved he still had it by penetrating yet another Administration, obtaining 66 pages of the report and posting them on the Washington Post website. Caught between a rock and a hard place, the President approved nearly all of McChrystal’s requests, proving that you can bring hope and change, but keeping a lid on it all is another challenge.

6. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo Scandal
In 1848, news of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo — the document that would conclude the two-year Mexican-American War — was leaked to John Nugent, a reporter with the New York Herald. After its publication, an infuriated Senate had Nugent called in for questioning; the Irish-born journalist refused to disclose his source, saying only that the informant in question was not a member of the Senate. That didn’t seem to endear Nugent to any of his interrogators and he was kept under veritable house arrest in the Capitol building for a whole month.
But Nugent didn’t crack and the exasperated Senate released him, according to the institution’s own official history, on “the face-saving grounds of protecting his health.” He’d soon venture west and become editor of the San Francisco Herald. In 1858, Nugent was given a high-profile commission by then President James Buchanan to investigate developments in New Caledonia (now British Columbia). It was a fitting reward — evidence suggests it was Buchanan who, as Secretary of State, revealed the treaty’s terms to Nugent.

5. Cablegate
It’s been quite a year for whistleblowing website Wikileaks. Its latest info dump, a treasure trove of diplomatic cables spanning the world, has caused an international uproar. U.S. politicians like Hillary Clinton and New York Congressman Peter King (pictured) called the leak a threat to global security, with King going so far as calling for Wikileaks founder Julian Assange to be prosecuted under the Espionage Act and for his site to be deemed a foreign terrorist organization.

4. Plamegate
In selling the 2003 invasion of Iraq, the Administration of George W. Bush made a lot of claims — that U.N. inspections weren’t working, that al-Qaeda had Iraqi links, that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. Most of these ended up not being true. One of the more suspect allegations voiced by President Bush was that Iraq had sought supplies of uranium from an African nation, understood to be the West African republic of Niger. This was refuted in the summer after U.S. troops had rolled into Baghdad by Ambassador Joseph Wilson, a career diplomat who had been sent earlier to Niger to investigate rumored sales of yellowcake, a form of uranium powder. Not long afterward, right-wing commentator Robert Novak published a column outing Wilson’s wife, Valerie Plame, as a CIA operative.

3. The Pentagon Papers
On June 13, 1971, the New York Times ran the first of a nine-part series of excerpts from a classified study of U.S. military involvement in Vietnam completed by the Department of Defense. The papers were turned over to the Times by military analyst Daniel Ellsberg, who had surreptitiously photocopied them starting as early as 1969. U.S. Senator Mike Gravel, a Democrat, also entered 4,100 pages of the study — which came to be known as the Pentagon Papers — to the Senate record, thus making their later publication in book form constitutionally sound.
So what was in the Pentagon Papers? Oh, you know, just proof that the U.S. secretly bombed Cambodia and conducted coastal raids on North Vietnam, and that four Administrations — from Truman’s to Johnson’s — had deliberately lied to the public. Ellsberg was put on trial for theft and conspiracy under the Espionage Act of 1917, but a series of legal missteps and dubious evidence-gathering tactics led the judge to dismiss all charges.

2. Watergate’s Deep Throat
After five men were arrested for breaking into and trying to bug the offices of the Democratic National Committee in June 1972, Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein began their investigation into what would become the country’s biggest political scandal. Soon Watergate came to stand for far more than just the burglarized building and would lead to President Richard Nixon’s resignation in 1974. Aiding Woodward and Bernstein as they connected the dots between the break-in and the White House was an informant whose identity remained a secret for a good 33 years. In 2005 — decades after the journalists won Pulitzers and All the President’s Men won Oscars — former deputy director of the FBI Mark Felt revealed that he was the mysterious “Deep Throat.”

1. The WikiLeaks War Logs
On Oct. 22, Internet-based watchdog organization WikiLeaks posted 391,832 classified U.S. military documents on the war in Iraq, the largest such leak in history. As he did with the July release of 77,000 secret documents related to the war in Afghanistan, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange shared the documents with several newspapers — including the New York Times, the Guardian and Der Spiegel — in advance of making them public. Among the major revelations were many instances of the U.S. military deliberately ignoring detainee abuse by Iraqi allies and an increase of the civilian-casualty count by 15,000. The July Afghanistan papers consisted primarily of secret reports from troops in the field covering local intelligence and recounting clashes — including a number of missives that detailed civilian casualties at the hands of coalition forces. Another important (though not altogether surprising) revelation was that members of the U.S. military suspect what others have long assumed: that Pakistan’s military intelligence agency has secretly assisted the Afghan Taliban insurgency.
