PLASTIC POLLUTION

When we at English for Italy learned about the problem of plastic pollution we felt so strongly we have decided to do something about it and support the charity project kaisei (www.projectkaisei.org). We will offer new subscribers the option to donate 1 euro to the course price and we will match it donating 2 euros per student.

We are so used to being surrounded by plastics, the tv remote, food containers, water bottles, toothbrush, comb, watering can etc. etc. we don’t even think about it but plastic does not break down.

Every bit of plastic that has ever been produced in the last 100 years is sitting somewhere on our planet.

Scientists have confirmed that there are millions of tonnes of floating plastic floating around in our seas. In the North Pacific ocean . The currents of 4 seas meet here at a point called the North Pacific Gyre. An ‘island’ made of plastic rubbish larger than the size of Texas (which is 696,200 km2) has formed. It is having a devastating impact on marine life and is releasing toxins into our seas which not only harm marine life but also the people who consume it. This is the plastic we can see, there is obviously lots more under the sea.

Here are 6 things you can do to make a difference:

1) Recycle.

2) Use re-usable shopping bags. Just remember to take them with you before you leave home!

3) Whenever possible choose alternative packaging to plastic.

4) Use non-petroleum plastic.

Noi, qui a ‘English for Italy’ abbiamo sentito del problema dell'inquinamento da materiali plastici e ci ha colpito così tanto che abbiamo deciso di fare qualcosa sostenendo l'organizzazione www.projectkaisei (www.projectkaisei.org). Ogni pezzo di plastica che sia mai stato prodotto negli ultimi 100 anni è da qualche parte sul nostro pianeta.

Gli scienziati hanno confermato che ci sono migliaia di kilogrammi di plastica che galleggiano sui nostri mari. Nel Pacifico del Nord, dove le correnti di quattro mari si incontrano in un luogo che si chiama il North Pacific Gyre, si è formata "un'isola" fatta di rifiuti di plastica, più grande del Texas (cioe’ 696,200 kilometri quadrati). Ha un impatto devastante sulla vita sottomarina e sta rilasciando sostanze tossiche nei mari che nuociono non solo alla vita sottomarina ma anche alle persone che consumano pesce. Questa è la plastica che possiamo vedere, ma c’è ancora di più sotto la superficie.

On Sunday February 19th 2012 Whitney Houston's funeral took place in New Hope Baptist church in Newark, New Jersey, America. It was chosen for her funeral because he singing talent was discovered here.

It was a televised funeral with millions of people watching the famous troubled singer with her infamous voice. It was quite a dramatic funeral, Kevin Costner spoke a few words and Whitney's ex-husband walked out of the funeral mid-service. When asked, he said that Whitney's entourage moved him 3 times and didn't respect his wish to sit next to their daughter Bobbi Kristina at the front. He didn't want to cause a scene so he kissed her coffin and walked out.

Whitney Houston had failed a medical 2 weeks before her death. She wanted cosmetic surgery however, you have to be in good general health and she was not. Her medical result shocked her, she had always been in denial about her health issues.

During the 1990's she admitted she was addicted to crack cocaine during an interview with Oprah Winfrey, during her marriage to Bobbi Brown. These years of abuse ruined her voice. She also drank heavily and re-started a drug habit last year.

At the age of 48 she was found dead in the bath in her hotel. A very sad end to a life of a beautiful, talented singer and actress who found it impossible to lead a 'normal' life.

Prince William and Kate Middleton met at St. Andrew's university in Scotland about 8 years ago . She is a 'normal' girl whose family members include butchers, miners and builders, yet on 29th April 2011 she married Prince William and became the Duchess of Cambridge at Westminster Abbey in London.

They're breaking with tradition and not having a honeymoon yet, they had a weekend in a secret location in the UK but Prince William will be returning to work at the RAF (Royal air force) as a search and rescue pilot on Tuesday 3rd May. They will go later in the year overseas to a secret destination.

In the afternoon the Queen held a formal reception party with 650 guests and in the evening Prince Charles held a riotous party with 300 guests which finished around 2 o'clock in the morning. During the evening Prince William's younger brother Harry gave speeches, singer Ellie Goulding one of the couple's favourite artists sang some of her songs.

Mistakes were made during the marriage of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. The couple don't want them to be repeated and have decided to delay having children for the first year. The queen has told her family that it is important that the Duchess of Cambridge feels part of the family from the start.

Salmon and rice gratin

Ingredients

675 grams fresh salmon fillet

1 bay leaf

a few parsley stalks

1 litre water

400 grams basmati rice (soaked in cold water for 30 minutes)

175 grams cheddar cheese

40 ml fresh chopped parsley

3 eggs (hard-boiled for 7-8 minutes) and chopped

salt and black pepper

Sauce

1 litre milk

40 grams plain flour

3 tablespoons butter

5ml dijon mustard

Put salmon into a frying pan with the water, bay leaf and parsley stalks, bring to the boil and simmer for 12 minutes.

Lift the salmon out and put the liquid into a fresh saucepan. Remove any bones from the fish when cool.

Drain the rice from the cold water and put into the saucepan with the previous hot water, bring to the boil and simmer for 10 minutes with the lid on. Remove from the pan. Leave the lid on and leave to stand for 5 minutes.

Make the sauce: add the butter and flour and stir in a little of the milk at a time stirring continuously to make a smooth sauce. Stir in the dijon mustard and salt and pepper.

Stir the rice into the sauce along with half the cheese and fresh parsley. Gently fold in the chopped fish and chopped eggs.

Spoon into a shallow dish, add the remaining half of cheese and put under the grill until the topping is golden brown and bubbling.

English history – King Henry VIII

Find below an article about Henry VIII, the most famous English monarch.

Henry VIII - Born 1491 Died 1547

Henry VIII is the most famous monarch in English history, probably because he married six times. He wasn’t a great king however, he was cruel (one estimate claims he killed 50,000 people during his reign). He closed the monasteries in England during his reign and he seized their wealth. He wanted to appear all-powerful and suffered ill-health, he was very overweight especially during his later years.

He liked enjoying himself and had a lot of hobbies, hunting, dancing and music (he composed the famous song ‘Greensleeves’ ) rather than govern England which he left to his advisors.

Henry was born on the 28th June 1491 in Greenwich, London. He became king at seventeen years old after the death of his brother, Arthur.

The six wives

CATHERINE OF ARAGON
Shortly after he became king he married Catherine of Aragon. She had been married to Henry’s brother (Arthur) so had become a widow. They were married for 24 years but the problem was that Henry wanted a male heir. Catherine gave birth several times during their marriage but the only child to survive was a daughter, Mary. Henry wanted a divorce but the Pope refused him.

ANNE BOLEYN
In 1533 Henry VIII divorced her anyway and 4 months before the divorce was finalized he married Anne Bolyn with whom he had a daughter, Elizabeth. The pop banished Henry from the Catholic church. Three years later he accused Anne of adultery and treason. The marriage was annulled on 17th May 1536. Two days later Henry had her executed.

JANE SEYMOUR
Henry VIII and Jane were married only two weeks after Anne Bolyn’s execution. Jane gave birth to a son (Edward) but two weeks after the birth she died of blood poisoning. Henry was heartbroken.

ANNE OF CLEVES
Even though Henry had a son now, his advisors put pressure on him to remarry. Reluctantly he agreed to married a German princess, Anne of Cleves. He disliked her intensely and refused to consummate their marriage. They divorced after only six months.

Enrico VIII – Nato nel 1491 Morto 1547

Enrico VIII e’ il monarca più famoso della storia inglese, probabilmente perché si è sposato sei volte. Non fu però un gran re comunque, era crudele (una stima dice che uccise 50,000 persone durante il suo regno). Chiuse i monasteri in Inghilterra durante il suo regno e si impossessò delle loro ricchezze. Voleva apparire onnipotente e soffrì di cattiva salute, era molto sovrappeso specialmente durante gli ultimi anni.

Gli piaceva divertirsi e aveva molti passatempi, la caccia, il ballo e la musica (compose la famosa canzone ‘Greensleeves’ – clicca qui per ascoltarla) piuttosto che governare l’Inghilterra che lasciò ai suoi consiglieri.

Enrico VIII nacque il 28 giugno 1491 a Greenwich, Londra. Divenne re all’età di diciassette anni dopo la morte di suo fratello, Arthur.

Le sei mogli

CATERINA D'ARAGONA
Poco dopo che divenne re sposò Caterina d’Aragona. Lei era stata sposata col fratello di Enrico (Arthur) quindi era diventata vedova. Furono sposati per 24 anni ma il problema era che Enrico voleva un erede maschio. Caterina partorì parecchie volte durante il loro matrimonio ma l’unico bambino che sopravvisse fu una figlia, Mary. Enrico voleva il divorzio ma il Papa glielo rifiutò.

ANNA BOLENA
Nel 1533 Enrico VIII divorziò comunque da lei, e quattro mesi prima che il suo divorzio fosse definitivo sposò Anna Bolena dalla quale ebbe una figlia, Elisabetta. Il Papa scomunicò Enrico VIII dalla Chiesa Cattolica. Tre anni dopo egli accusò Anna di adulterio e tradimento. Il matrimonio fu annullato il 17 Maggio 1536. Due giorni dopo Enrico la fece giustiziare.

JANE SEYMOUR
Enrico VIII e Jane si sposarono solamente dopo due settimane dall’esecuzione di Anna Bolena. Jane diede alla luce un figlio maschio (Edward) ma due settimane dopo la nascita lei morì di setticemia. Enrico ebbe il cuore infranto.

ANNA DI CLEVES
Anche se Enrico ora aveva un figlio, I suoi consiglieri gli fecero pressioni per risposarsi. Con riluttanza acconsentì a sposare una principessa tedesca, Anna di Cleves. Egli la prese profondamente in antipatia e rifiutò di consumare il matrimonio. Divorziarono dopo soli sei mesi.

CATHERINE HOWARD
Era vivace e civettuola, il che all’inizio interessò Enrico, ma dopo causò gelosia. Sedici giorni dopo il divorzio da Anna erano sposati, ma meno di due anni dopo Enrico la fece giustiziare per adulterio e tradimento.

Lemon polenta cake

Vocabulary/Vocabolario:
almonds - mandorle
baking powder - lievito in polvere
unsalted - non salato
caster sugar - zucchero semolato/raffinato
zest/rind - scorza
bowl - scodella
to cream - mescolare/amalgamare
to stir - mescolare
to pour - versare
mixture - miscela
cake tin - tortiera
to preheat - preriscaldare
to bake - cuocere al forno
to cool - raffredare
topping - glassa
icing sugar - zucchero a velo
to puncture holes - forare/perforare (fare bucchi piccoli)
to soak - assorbire/penetrare

Ingredients

Cornmeal/polenta – ground 100 grams
Ground almonds – 200 grams
1 + half teaspoons baking powder
200 grams soft unsalted butter
200 grams caster sugar

4 eggs

zest/rind of 2 small lemons (or 1 large one)

1.Mix the polenta, ground almonds and baking powder in a large bowl.

2.Cream the butter and sugar together in a different bowl.

3. Add the lemon zest and a bit of the dry ingredients with each egg and stir gently.

4. Pour mixture in a cake tin.
5.Preheat oven 180 degrees and bake for 35 minutes
6.Take out and let it cool for 10 minutes before adding the topping.

Topping:
Juice of 2 small lemons or 1 large lemon
Icing sugar – 125 grams

7. Heat together the icing sugar and lemon juice.
8. Puncture (use a piece of uncooked spaghetti to puncture holes) and pour the juice over the cake so it soaks in the juice.
9. Store in a cake tin. Best eaten the next day.

L'omino di Pan di Zenzero

Dopo poco disse all’omino di pan di zenzero “La mia coda e’ stanca, saltami sulla schiena”, e l’omino di pan di zenzero così fece. Poi, la volpe disse, “la mia schiena e’ stanca, saltami sul naso” e l’omino di pan di zenzero così fece.

Quando arrivarono alla riva opposta la volpe lanciò l’omino di pan di zenzero in alto nell’aria. E in un’unico boccone la volpe mangiò il gustoso biscotto! L’omino di pan di zenzero non corse via mai più!

Dovrai anche essere in grado di usare lessico e grammatica nel modo corretto scrivendo un breve messaggio, e un testo o una lettera di circa 100 parole. In più dovrai svolgere un esercizio nel quale si cambia il significato delle frasi.

Ascolto: 30 minuti
Dovrai dimostrare di essere in grado di comprendere una varietà di registrazioni, compresi annunci e discorsi della vita quotidiana. Dovrai essere capace di capire gli atteggiamenti e le intenzioni di chi parla.

Conversazione: da 10 - 12 minuti
L’esame orale si svolge a coppie. Dovrai partecipare ad una conversazione, facendo domande e rispondendo, e parlare di quello che ti piace e non ti piace.

On 30th November a Russian snorkeller was killed by a shark in Naama Bay, Egypt. On 1st December another Russian snorkeller was killed in the same area. Local authorities closed the beaches for 3 days, re-opening them on Saturday 4th December. Sadly there was a third fatal attack one day after they re-opened the beach to swimmers. This time it was a 70-year-old German lady who was killed.

Experts cannot understand why the sharks are swimming so close to the shore.

Local people are worried it will affect tourism in the area.

Marine experts on Wednesday quizzed witnesses to shark attacks as beaches at Egypt's Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh remained closed after a woman was torn apart by a shark.

South Sinai governor Mohammed Shosha said authorities would announce later in the day whether they would reopen beaches which are visited each year by between three and four million tourists.

The beaches were closed on Sunday after a 70-year-old German tourist was killed when a shark ripped her apart as she was swimming in the popular Naama Bay.

Foreign and Egyptian experts were meeting with witnesses to the attacks in a Sharm el-Sheikh hotel and compiling data to understand what brought sharks so close to a so-called safe area near the shore, a conservation official said.

He told reporters that Egyptian authorities want to gather all the information possible about the killer shark before they resume their hunt for the animal.Experts have suggested that sharks have been lured to the shore by illegal feeding, while others blame their behaviour on changes in the ecosystem.

The German tourist was fatally mauled just metres from the shore, a day after beaches were reopened following shark attacks that injured two Russian snorkellers on November 30 and another one on December 1.

Authorities believe that at least two sharks were involved in the attacks, including one mako shark that was captured on Friday.

Marine biologists are puzzled by the attacks, which they describe as very rare.

George Burgess, a prominent shark expert and member of a team that flew in to Sharm el-Sheikh to help out with the probe, said they were working on the assumption something had altered the ecological balance in the coral rich coast.

"It is safe to say that the situation where you have a clump distribution in attacks, occurring after another in a limited geographical distribution, is very rare indeed," Burgess told AFP on Tuesday.

These rare cases are "associated with an attractive event that brings sharks into the area," he said, adding the event could be man-made or environmental. "There is something that altered the balance."

Red flags still fluttered on the beaches on Wednesday to signal to swimmers to stay clear out of the sea, although expert scuba divers were allowed back into some locations along the shore.

The government is keen to protect the tourism industry, a main source of foreign currency for Egypt which generated revenues of 10.76 billion dollars in 2009, according to official figures

Tomato soup

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons olive oil
1 onion
2 x cloves of garlic
800 grams (2 x tins or cartons) chopped tomatoes
2 tablespoons of tomato puree
1 handful of fresh basil leaves - washed
pinch of bicarbonate of soda (stops the soup curdling)
500 mililitres milk:

How to make:
1. Fry the onion and garlic in the olive oil.
2. Add the chopped tomatoes, tomato puree and basil leaves. Bring to the boil and turn the heat down low - let it simmer for 15 minutes
3. For a smooth soup whiz the mixture with a blender (hand held blender is fine)
4. Mix the bicarbonate of soda with a tablespoon of milk and add to the soup. It will froth a little but will go away. Add the rest of the milk and simmer for 5 minutes
