How to Enable Hidden Options in Windows’ Disk Cleanup Tool

The Disk Cleanup tool has been around in Windows for years. It offers a quick way to remove temporary, cache, and other non-essential files to help you free up some disk space. You can even use it to remove old versions of Windows after an upgrade to Windows 10. Disk Cleanup also has several hidden options that you can only access if you run it from the Command Prompt or a custom shortcut.

Start by opening the Command Prompt with administrative privileges. Press Windows+X and choose “Command Prompt (Admin)” from the list of commands.

At the Command Prompt, type the following command and then press Enter.

cleanmgr /sageset:65535 /sagerun:65535

Note that where this command uses the number 65535, you can actually use any number between 1 and 65535 as long as you use the same number in both places. The reason for this is that the cleanmgr command offers some other customization and automation features. Disk Cleanup remembers options, so you could create batch files or scripts that ran cleanup in different ways based on the set number you use. Here, we’re just exposing the hidden cleanup options, but if you’re interested, Microsoft has some good information about automating Disk Cleanup.

After you run the command at the Command Prompt, the Disk Cleanup interface will load. Unlike when you run it the regular way, it will not ask you which disk you want clean up. Instead, options you choose will apply to all disks. As you can see, the tool now offers several options that are unavailable if you run Disk Cleanup normally.

If you want to run Disk Cleanup this way regularly, you can also create a shortcut. To do this, you’ll first need to run the command using the Command Prompt as we just discussed. This creates a configuration entry in the Registry using the sageset number you chose (we’re still using 65535). Then, you’ll need to create the new shortcut. Just right-click on your Desktop (or any folder where you want to save the shortcut) and choose New > Shortcut. In the Create Shortcut window, paste (or type) the following text into the “Type the location of the item” box and then click Next.

Give your shortcut a name and then click Finish to save it.

Now, all you have to do is double-click that shortcut to run Disk Cleanup with advanced options against all the drives on your system. It won’t necessarily save you a huge amount of extra space, but sometimes every little bit helps. It also offers a nice way to run Disk Cleanup against multiple drives at once.

follow the steps as given below :

1) Select any file or folder.

2) Right click on it, select ‘Rename’ or simply press ‘F2’.

3) Press and hold the ‘Alt’ key. While holding the Alt key, type numbers ‘0160’ from the numpad.

NOTE- Type the numbers ‘0160’ from the numpad, that is, the numbers present on the right side of the keyboard.

Don’t type the numbers which are present on top of the character keys.

4) Press Enter and the nameless file or folder will be created.

REASON- The file or folder that seems nameless is actually named with a single space.

Step 1: Create the shortcut for the folder or tool for which you need to create the shortcut.

Right-click on your Desktop and select New -> Shortcut.

Then type any name for the shortcut.

Step 2: Open the run command and goto \Windows

Step 3: Paste the shortcut to that folder and change the name of the shortcut to run command as we want.

Syskey launched: Click “Update”

Choose “Store Startup key on floppy disk” and click “OK”

You’ll be prompted to enter your diskette. Make sure your USB drive is inserted and writable.

Restart and have fun. Don’t lose your USB disk! Also, to revert this, you can run syskey again and choose to store it locally instead of “on a floppy disk”.

Under the lnk file key, in the right pane delete a String value named Is Shortcut.

2.TO DISABLE RIGHT CLICK ON THE DESKTOP AND EXPLORER.

STEPS:

Open regedit.exe file.

Scroll down to create the following registry key:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies]

In the left side pane, right click on the Policies key and create a new key called Explorer.

4.TO DISABLE WINDOWS HOTKEYS.

STEPS:

Open regedit.exe file.

Scroll down to create the following registry key:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]

Under the Explorer key, in the right pane create a new DWORD value named NoWinKeys within the above registry key and set its data value to 1 to disable

the windows hotkeys, and to 0 to enable it.

NOTE: You may want to completely delete the DWORD value NoWinKeys when you want to enable hotkeys.

5.TO DISABLE THE CONTROL PANEL.

STEPS:

Open regedit.exe file.

Scroll down to create the following registry key:

6.TO DISABLE THE FOLDER AND SEARCH OPTION.

STEPS:

NOTE: Now when you right click on your desktop, a new menu item called Paint has been added to the context menu.

Seeing what Chrome is like without spending a penny is easy on Windows, Mac or Linux with a virtual machine.

I like to tell people that they should try a Chromebook. I think it's simply the best platform for a laptop for most home-users, and the price-point is perfect. But saying something is easy — it's the believing part that is a little harder. Taking a gamble by spending $200 or more based on what other people think can be difficult. I feel you because I'm a bit of a tightwad myself and while I'm not from Missouri I usually need to see something for myself before I make a decision.

If that sounds like you, too, this is something you'll need to try.

The picture above is Chrome OS (technically Chromium) running on top of Windows 10, and it was as easy as downloading two free files and opening them. Using VirtualBox — software that creates a virtual machine on Windows, Mac or Linux — and a build of Chromium from the folks at NeverWare you really can see what using a Chromebook is like. You'll need a computer with an x86 processor (if you don't know what this is, then you have one) and enough RAM to run your normal operating system while reserving 2GB for the Chromium virtual machine. You'll also need an internet connection to download the files and to connect your virtual Chromebook with your Google Account.

NeverWare is part of CloudReady. They are a cloud software company who happens to provide builds of Chromium — the open source software that is used to build Chrome OS. Think of Chromium as AOSP for Android. The code is what Google maintains and uses to build their software. Step 2: Block Macros in Office Files that came from the Internet

Microsoft had recently unveiled a novel method by implementing a new tactical security feature to limit the Macro execution attack in MS Office 2016, ultimately preventing your system from hijacking.

The new feature is a group policy setting that lets enterprise administrators to disable macros from running in Office files that come from the Internet.

The new setting is called, "Block macros from running in Office files from the Internet" and can be navigated through the group policy management editor under:

User configuration > Administrative templates > Microsoft Word 2016 > Word Options > Security > Trust Center

It can be configured for each Office application.

By enabling this option, macros that come from the Internet are blocked from running even if you have 'enable all macros' in the Macros Settings.

Moreover, instead of having the option to 'Enable Editing,' you'll receive a notification that macros are blocked from running, as the document comes from an Untrusted Source.

The only way to run that particular Office file is to save it to a trusted location, allowing macros to run.

Pixabay has some of the best stock images I’ve ever seen, even when compared to the handful of paid stock image sites I’ve used. And in addition to photos, you’ll also find illustrations and vector graphics. It’s a must-bookmark site — perhaps even better than MorgueFile.

4. Unsplash

Unsplash adds 10 new photos every 10 days, and every image added is absolutely stunning. There’s no overall theme here, but the cool thing is that if you make anything using an image from Unsplash, they may feature you on the Made With Unsplash catalog.

5. RaumRot

Despite the strange name — it means “room red” in German — you’ll love this site if you hate how most stock sites have images that have that weird but distinctive “stock photo” look to them. RaumRot aims to be the exact opposite of that: non-comformist and 100% free.

Negative Space is a great place to go if you want images that feel like traditional stock photos but aren’t as sterile and soulless. There are hundreds of selections across a dozen or so categories, and new images are added every week.

What Do You Use Stock Photos for?

Free high-resolution images are hard to come by, and when you do find them, they tend to be poorly composed, low quality, or otherwise boring. None of the sites above will disappoint in that regard. Never again will you need to pay for stock imagery.

Just to be safe, make sure you brush up on the Creative Commons license that all of these sites use. Also, if these aren’t enough, supplement with direct-to-email stock image services. If you’re still unsatisfied, you may need to subscribe to a paid stock image site.

Puppy Linux

For the longest while, Puppy Linux has been seen as little more than a curiosity. Designed to be used on the most austere of hardware, it could comfortably chug away on early Pentium machines without breaking a sweat. But it wasn’t that practical. Many installed it on their antique hardware to see how little ‘oomph’ it needed, and then forgot about it.

But it never went away. Updates and new versions are still regularly released. Sure, it’s still stripped down; it can run on low-end and underpowered hardware. But you can now use it to get stuff done.

There are three different versions of Puppy. One, called Slacko Puppy is based upon SlackWare, which is one of the longest established Linux distributions. People continue to use it as their day-to-day operating system. People understand it. Another is built around Ubuntu 14:04 LTS, called TahrPup.

The third version of Puppy is the mainline project, originally founded by Barry Kauler. The recent versions, codenamed Quirky, have been built with the express goal of running on a USB drive. Although I’d still err on the side of caution and use TahrPup, in order to mitigate any potential hardware compatibility issues.

Elementary OS

I know that people have their own preference when it comes to what Linux distribution they want to use. It’s for this reason why I’m reticent to just talk about desktop operating systems. But please, indulge me just one more. After that, we’ll talk about how you can use Linux and USB sticks to accomplish specific tasks, like resizing hard drives.

In recent months, I’ve come to really take a shine to Elementary OS.

It’s often overlooked, especially by its larger brothers like Ubuntu and Linux Mint. I’ve never understood that, because in addition to being fast, and built upon the sturdy foundations of Ubuntu LTS, it’s also a pretty (and massively customizable) face.

Since it shares a lot in common with Ubuntu, you can be confident you won’t have to deal with any hardware compatibility gremlins. Plus, it proves to be buttery-smooth, even on low-end hardware, like laptops and cheap Atom and Celeron-powered machines. This is important when you’re also dealing with the inherent performance bottleneck that comes with booting your operating system from an USB drive.

For Managing Your Hard Disk: Gparted Live

Hard drives are divided into chunks called ‘partitions’. Your computer’s hard drive might have just one partition for all your files and folders. Or it might have a partition for your programs, and another for your documents and files. From time, you might need to modify these partitions to either resize them, or wipe them entirely.

There’s a common Linux tool used to manage these partition called Gparted. Many distributions come with this pre-installed. But there’s also a distribution which is centered around this tool.

It’s called Gparted Live. Burn it to a CD (or, better yet, a USB flash drive) and you’ll be able to reshape your hard drive as you require. Be careful though, as one mistake could potentially render your hard drive unbootable.

For Removing Viruses: AVG Rescue CD and BitDefender Rescue CD

When malware strikes, it can often be game over. Your machine will run slowly, or perhaps not at all. Your files and folders will be held to ransom. Everything you do on your computer could be monitored. Worse, many viruses and Trojans are designed to actively fight removal. They’ll prevent antimalware programs from updating their definitions, or even running. But you have alternatives.

By booting into a special Linux distribution, you can scan your system for problems, and resolve them. There are two worthy of note, each produced by a major security company you’ve probably heard of. Here’s what you need to know.

AVG Rescue CD

Over the past twenty years, one of the biggest names in computer security has been AVG. The Czech-based firm has produced one of the first free antivirus programs to hit the mainstream. Now it’s available as a Linux distribution.

You probably haven’t heard of it though. AVG have chosen to market it at their enterprise customers. But although they’re not marketing it at home users, you can still download it from the AVG website.

It’s also worth noting that although it’s called the “AVG Rescue CD”, you can still burn it onto a USB flash drive. Instructions can be found in the video above.

BitDefender Rescue CD

Another big name in computer security is Romania-based BitDefender, who boast an array of premium and free antivirus and antimalware solutions. Like AVG, they too offer a Linux live CD.

In terms of sheer effectiveness, BitDefender’s products tend to rank quite highly. Which is why I’d personally lean towards BitDefender’s offering. Antivirus is the type of thing where you want to pick a product and commit to it, so as to avoid causing problems.

Like AVG’s Rescue CD, you can install this on an USB stick. BitDefender have some helpful instructions, where they explain how you can use the Windows tool Stickifier to create one.

Possible, Sure – But is it Practical?

But how does this actually work in practice? You might have concerns that running a desktop operating system on a USB flash drive would be an exercise in frustration. But actually, it isn’t too bad.

This is partly due to the proliferation of newer USB standards, including USB 3.0, which is an increasingly common feature on laptops. This standard offers vastly improved read-write times, which are essential if you’re running an operating system.

Then, there’s the fact that prices have crashed, while storage quantities have soared. You can easily get a 64GB drive for less than $50. USB drives that stretch into the hundreds of gigabytes still remain an expensive proposition though.

Never10 Prevents Windows 7 and 8.1 from Automatically Upgrading to Windows 10

Microsoft really, really wants you to upgrade to Windows 10, but if you’re a happy Windows 7 or 8.1 user, you shouldn’t be forced to upgrade. Never10 gives you control over whether Windows will upgrade itself.

The free utility from security researcher and developer Steve Gibson couldn’t be simpler to use. Run the 81k program and click either “Disable Win10 Upgrade” or “Enable Win10 Upgrade.” Never10 modifies the GWX (Get Windows 10) registry settings to prevent or enable automatic OS upgrading.

You’ll need to be running a non-Enterprise edition of Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 for this to work. For some systems, you might need to get a Windows Update to be able to use Never10, but the utility will also figure that out for you and also install the update if necessary.

You can read more about the technical details behind Never10 here. Unlike GWX Control Panel, another tool used for the same purpose, Never10 doesn’t install any software on your computer. It just works.

For our inaugural post, we thought we would share some proof of concept ideas regarding potential reactions and responses to ransomware outbreaks. We have been tossing around some ideas and scripts, that we think can buy the victim back some time when their machine is being infected by ransomware. The hope being that this additional time allows the victim time to react to the infection and hopefully provide the victim an opportunity to remedy the situation.

As an incident responder, we all know that ransomware cases can be overly damning to a victim and an organization, so reacting to them as quick as possible is crucial. Since protections in place, such as AntiVirus are constantly in a rat race, that is usually one step behind, it puts everyone at a disadvantage. One thing you can say about ransomware is that it isn't hard to spot a successful infection. Forensically speaking, it is overly noisy and riddles the host with artifacts of its execution.

Knowing that there are numerous artifacts and infection actions you can bank on, things such as file overwrites, an infection order, known extensions targeted and potentially persistence, what would happen if you reacted on those events specifically and not the malware itself. If we reacted on these events instead of looking for a stage1 or stage2 drop, the majority of ransomware infections could be delayed, buying back some time for the victim and incident responder to react and hopefully stop the infection.

File Canaries:
Take for example the standard scenario where the user receives a malicious email and then unknowingly acts on the attachment, allowing the ransomware to start the initial stages of infections. Once all the pieces are in play and the ransomware starts the encryption process, it will usually target files of a known type, files such as office docs, audio files, video files, images and in some cases script file extensions. Besides targeting files of a specific type, it will also start the encryption process by beginning the process down the root of C:\ or beginning by encrypting the files within the running user's profile. Once the local drive has been encrypted, the malware can then move on to targeting mapped drives and begin encrypting the mounted share's content.

So knowing these elements of the attack, we wondered if we could setup a canary file or a canary directory and then automatically respond when one of these files are written to, aka overwritten by encryption. Of course, we want to respond in the safest manner possible, so we would need to be careful about creating these canaries. Knowing that multiple tools and programs comb through your files regularly, you want to ensure your permissions are right.

What type of non-intrusive reactions should we implement

Notify a responsible party via email

This is likely the lowest level of reaction we thought was appropriate. It does nothing for protection, just simply alerts someone.

Disconnect all mapped drives

This action will at least protect any mapped shares or devices, containing the infection to the single endpoint.

Slow down the malware and attempt to kill the process

Later in the post we will illustrate some interesting techniques that can be performed to slow ransomware down. Some of these techniques are fairly aggressive and could cause problems if triggered by a false positive.

Below is a short Powershell example that could be used as a base to monitor for canary file changes. The script creates a single canary file, enables monitoring the file for LastWrite changes and responds when the file is written to by sending an email and unmounting any mapped drives.

This is a passive measure aimed at detection and containment. This is a very non-invasive way for companies to confine outbreaks of ransomware within a particular endpoint and prevent network resources from being affected. One of the big down sides of this example is that we aren't actually disrupting the course of the malware and we still have a mess to deal with on the local endpoint.

Below is a C# example that works in conjunction with Object Auditing and Audit Rules. When Object Auditing is enabled to audit Write Data, we can monitor for those security events and then react. Most applications installed or resident on the system will potentially read or access these file canaries, so you want to ignore those read events and only focus on the writing of the file. When you create your canary files you want to enable Create Files/Write Data, Create Folders/Append Data NTFS permissions. Object Auditing can be enabled in your Local Security policy or via GPO or via .Net but given most likely use a Global Policy it may not be worthy of including in your script. See Example 3 for some code examples for the Audit Rules.

In this example, the script will monitor the event logs for Security-Auditing events that contain the filename or directory name you picked. Since it will only trigger when data is written to the canary file, this example script will then kill the process that wrote to the canary. Depending on your needs you can combine actions, so you could also unmount any mapped shares and send an email, or whatever action you feel appropriate.

The first few examples create file canaries in our honeypot folder to give us the time to find, alert on, remove mappings and or kill the malicious process. But depending on where you place your canary folder or files and what you name them, the malware might be able to encrypt hundreds files before it hits your canary files. Most ransomware uses relatively simple cryptographic methods that computationally take almost no time at all and present us with a hefty challenge on reacting quickly. We needed a way to keep the malware busy doing something harmless, before it got to our actually files.

So why did Example 3 use '$' as the canary directory? Say you create a mountpoint called '$$'.

So what happens when you browse to that directory? You'll quickly notice you hit a recursive loop.

How does this actually help? If the ransomware iterates from the top of the volume, this seemingly infinite loop of folders infinitely increases the "distance" to get the files we want to protect.

Let's take a look at the difference in ProcMon.
Here is an example of Teslacrypt enumerating through a Windows VM without a sinkhole:

In the picture above, we can see that the C:\* is queried and $Recycle.Bin folder is the first one returned, so it starts recursively searching for files.

So what does it look like when Teslacrypt hits our mount point.

This ransomware is not able to recurse the drive because of the mountpoint we created. It just goes on and on hitting C:\$$. You may be wondering "What if it doesn't start recursing at the top of the volume?".

In order to crack that nut, you could create multiple sinkholes, for example putting an additional sinkhole in a user profile.

If the ransomware hits the Users\username\Documents\$GoDirectlyToJail "folder", it will get sent back to the top of the volume where it will be sinkholed by the C:\$$ "folder".

The example below uses the file canaries and the sinkholes concepts together. The script creates plain text canary files using the extension list, creates the sinkhole mount point. This script will force the ransomware into a loop, so it perpetually encrypts the same canary files over and over again.

While this file system is okay for USB flash drives and other external media, you won’t want to use this for an internal drive. It lacks the permissions and other security features built into the more modern NTFS file system. NTFS

exFAT

exFAT was introduced in 2006, and was added to older versions of Windows with updates to Windows XP and Windows Vista.

Like NTFS, exFAT has very large file size and partition size limits.
