Pioneers of tourist development in Miches

The holiday and adventure complex  “Rancho La Cueva” is located at the heart of a palm grove, next to one of the most beautiful beaches in the Dominican East Coast. You  find us in the area of Miches, near the small village El Cedro at the beach Playa Limon, only 3 km from the highway Higuey-Miches (carretera 104).

In 1992 we have started to explore the natural attractions around Miches and decided to build a small ecotourism project on the beach of Playa Limon where we founded the place named “La Cueva“.

• 1999 we launched the first commercial activity trip to the pristine beach of Playa Limon. Tourists from Boca Chica, Juan Dolio, Bayahibe and Punta Cana was brought by Safari-trucks to enjoy a boat trip in the Cedro river , walking, swimming or relaxing on the beach of Playa Limon and a typical Dominican lunch with coconuts under the palm trees. Animated by the fantastic results of this simple trip, in 2001 we expanded the program and we brought the visitors to the summit of the mountain Redonda, we introduced horseback riding on the beach of Playa Limon and birdwatching in the lake Laguna Limon. Too the tourists came by bus and changed in a nearby “Colmado” to the Safari-trucks. After we created stops in a cock-fight place (gallera), a coffee and chocolate farm and a demonstration how to make cigars by hand.  Slowly, the new tour named “Laguna Limon vip” established in the market of the All inclusive hotels in Bavaro/Punta Cana and in the next few years we built at “La Cueva” a large dining room, a big stable for the horses and a Gift Shop.
• Through the tour we were able to establish at “La Cueva” a very good restaurant, specialized in fresh fish, seafood and pork from the grill. Since 2006 we are finishing rooms for visitors and tourists.

Miches, Dominican Republic – What started as a singular effort by a team from Columbia University to establish measures to conserve natural assets in the zone of Miches, today gathers force with representatives from local, national and international technical institutions, and experts with a long track record in development and conservation.

In addition to Columbia University, the third gathering, first of the year, took place with the support of the Diving Academy, Tropicalia Foundation, Miches Office of the Mayor, Agroindustrias Carlyle Sees SA, Fondesa, Dominican Sustainable Tourism Alliance, USAID, Environment Ministry and Rancho Laguna Limon.

The Work Group for a Sustainable Samana Bay identified high-priority goals to reach, including the design of a solid waste program, a territorial master plan and tourism development under a unified vision.

Among the speakers were Environment minister Jaime David Fernandez Mirabal, representatives from the USAID, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and from the Puerto Plata tourism cluster associations.
