SHOPPING
Last weekend I posted my Saturday pick up from the Bountiful Baskets food co-op, and lots of my friends on Facebook and off asked about it. I realized it has been a couple of years since I brought it up so I am bringing it up again. When you join the co-op you get the opportunity to buy in on the week's pick up of fruits and vegetables plus additional items that you can purchase. You can sign up for a 50/50 fruit and vegetable combination or go for an organic basket (I usually just stick with the regular). In addition, there are opportunities to buy large quantities of other items like breads, tortillas, coconut oil and more. The site is very easy to navigate and there is participation spots all over Arizona from Anthem to Yuma and in between. You order between Monday afternoon and Tuesday evening and pick up on Saturday at the location required. Learn more by going to the website. Follow this link to learn more. FREE EVENT
Friday, May 10th is free National Public Gardens Day. Now this may not sound amazing to you, but if you took a good look at the gardens you can visit, for free on this day, you just might change your mind. Visit the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix or Tohono Chul in Tucson. The free admission tickets are thanks to Better Homes and Gardens and the American Public Garden Association. Follow this link to get your link to participating gardens and your tickets. It looks like you can get up to ten tickets. Not a bad way to maybe spend a day with the home-school group.

MOTHER'S DAY
Treat mom to a free breakfast at IKEA on Mother's Day from restaurant opening until 11:00 am. Hey, I'm a mom, and if I don't have to cook, I'm happy. I'll take a free meal anywhere.

Dad's, teachers, grandparents or even older siblings can help fill out this sweet All About Mom printable from Tip Junkie. It provides mom with a great snapshot of life with her little ones.

Coupons are also a pretty awesome gift for mom. I recently relocated some that my son gave me and although I haven't used them all yet, they have no expiration date so I intend to. :) There is a great printable at Homemade Gifts Made Easy. Just scroll down a bit at this link.

Can't set up a getaway for mom on Mother's Day? You can give her that feeling with breakfast in bed and a room service order. Set up a menu for mom to choose her breakfast treats and print out this cute door hanger for her to write her choices on and hang on the door when she heads to bed. So very sweet!

The kids can also make a really cute felt flower pot via this tutorial. Felt is very inexpensive and these flowers will last a good long time.

A week or so ago, I was moaning to my husband about how badly I wished we had an app for our phone that could keep us on top of our grocery needs. An app that could keep track of what we needed and also share that information with whomever we chose. Grocery iQ is a perfect app for that. TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK GIFTS
Next week is Teacher Appreciation Week. Help your children share some appreciation for their teachers with these inexpensive gifts.

Pom pom yarn book marks are seriously cute. All it takes is some inexpensive yarn, scissors and a wee bit of patience. So simple, I could do it. I found this tutorial at Design Mom.

I found a great Back To School gift that can easily double as a teacher appreciation gift. A small jar of dipping caramel and an apple wrapped up all cute. This sweet gift is completely explained at Random Thoughts of a Supermom.

It doesn't get much easier than the gift of Fanta soda with the tag "You are a FANTA stic teacher." The printable and tutorial is available at the blog 4 Men 1 Lady.

Bake your teacher some tasty cookies and pick up some take out boxes at the craft store. There is a great printable and tutorial at Make Bake Celebrate (the cookies are awesomely decorated but any baked cookie will be just as sweet). The printable tag that says "Thanks to you, I'm one smart cookie" is sweet as can be.

Plan on getting some flowers for the teacher? Mom in Time Out has a great printable to go with flowers or put together a little garden kit like you will see at the website. Very cute.

If you have kids, you probably have crayons around. If you don't have crayons around, they are easy to pick up and use to make a simple crayon frame. Follow the tutorial at Mom It Forward.

Other quick ideas:
-Fill plastic lidded drinking glasses with single serve powdered drink mixes that they can add to the glass. Perfect for the teacher to quench their thirst with a treat at any time. You can also fill that plastic cup with a couple of snack treats as well as drink packets.
-If you can locate an old Scrabble game at the thrift store, you can combine the tiles to spell the teacher's name, glue it to the tile holder and give your teacher a creative desk plate.

MORE WAYS TO SAVE WHEN TRAVELING
One of my favorite sites for finding that ideal location when traveling is Airbnb. Airbnb hooks you up with locals who are renting out their homes to travelers. These homes could be condos, apartments, houses or even simply a room. The bonus is the prices are right, the places belong to locals, and you are in the thick of things rather than in a hotel. It is terrifically easy to navigate. Another bonus, you can even rent your own place or rooms via Airbnb.

SIMPLE TIPS WITH PETROLEUM JELLY
Okay, the fact is even if it is petroleum jelly many of us just call it Vaseline. It can be a money saver. Here's a couple of tips.

-To make candle wax cleanup easier, lightly rub petroleum jelly inside the candle holder.
-Get a clean looking at home manicure by dabbing a light layer of the jelly around your fingernails before polishing. Excess will wipe away cleanly.
-A light layer of the jelly around the mouth of the polish bottle will also make it a breeze to open.
-If your door has a squeak, apply a little jelly to silence it.
-Remove water stains from wood tables by applying the jelly to the stain and let it set over night. Buff the stain out in the morning.

Some Thrifty Tips 4/11/2013

PLANTING FROM THE FRIDGE

A while back I shared that I was planning on doing some gardening this summer and I was looking for tips to have some success. One of the tips shared with me was that there are several produce items that you can regrow. I shared in the past how you can keep green onions on hand by simply placing them in a jar of water and that they will grow and grow and grow (LOVE THAT!), but I thought it would be cool to share these others.

-Romaine lettuce - My mom shared this one with me. Whenever she buys Romaine lettuce, she cuts off all the leaves as far as she can and then cuts the bottom with a cross shape and places it in water. Within days it begins to root. Once they grow a bit she pots them up and lets them continue on growing until she is ready to enjoy the lettuce and start it all over again.

-Celery - A listener shared this with me. Cut a store-bought celery down to about 2 1/2 to three inches from base. Place in water for ten days. As it begins to show regrowth you can cut some of the older stalk away (not all just the outer ring) after ten days and decent growth and root it should be ready to plant. It sprouts in weeks and is definitely quicker than seed. I saw some people do this with water, but I was told that soil is the way to go with the celery because when you move it to soil it kind of freaks out if it has only been in water.

-Ginger- Ginger is great for the tummy and easy to plant. Buy a ginger root with lots of nubs. Plant it (nub side up) in a pot and let it grow. It should be ready to harvest in 4-6 months (yes it isn't fast but it is cool).

-Garlic - It is rare that you need the entire garlic head. Soooo what you are going to do is pull off a couple of cloves to plant. Peel off the garlic's paper skin and plant it point up in soil. Each one will grow you another head.

-Pineapple- I am not sure what you do once the plant gets going but I understand that you can grow a pineapple plant from the crown of the pineapple. Here's the skinny - Remove the bottom leaves from the crown (about an inch or two) and put in a container of water. It should grow some good roots in 3 to 4 weeks. Once that happens plant in soil and let it grow. Apparently this takes a while but a pretty plant is still a pretty plant and these are supposedly ready to harvest in 11/2 years. That is a nice payback for something you already bought.

-Potatoes and Sweet Potatoes - Both of these can be grown because of the eyes. If you are like me and occasionally lose the opportunity to use all your potatoes, try cutting the potatoes into chunks with those long "eyes." Whey do they call those eyes? They really look more like feelers. I guess feelers is just a bit too creepy. Anyway make sure your chunks have one or two eyes. Let them dry a bit and then plant in soil about four inches deep with "eyes" facing up. A good compost will help these grow. You can grow sweet potatoes by placing their ends in water and letting shoots grow. Once they grow like the eyes do, you can separate and plant.

RECIPE AND TIP
I was so excited several months ago when I finally had enough room in my freezer to purchase some pizza dough from Sam's Club. For under $20 I bought one case (20 balls of frozen pizza dough). I can make my own dough, and it will be cheaper BUT not so much cheaper in time and yeast that it is really worth it to me. For less than $20 I can buy a case of dough (split it with someone even) and have pizza on hand with very little notice. Here's the trick: Double wrap the dough when you get home and freeze. Pop the dough in the fridge a day or two before you plan to make pizza to thaw out. It usually takes a day. This dough is great for pizza and calzone.

Now as much as I do appreciate having pizza dough at the ready, I do like a homemade sauce. This recipe tastes amazing, makes enough sauce for two pizzas, doesn't contain weird preservatives that you can't pronounce, it is totally easy (my favorite part) and is pretty inexpensive.

INGREDIENTS
1 - 28 oz can of crushed tomatoes
1/4 cup of extra virgin olive oil
1/2 teaspoon ground pepper
3/4 teaspoon minced garlic (I usually buy this by the jar so I always have it on hand for recipes)
3/4 teaspoon dried oregano
1 Tablespoon of Pecorino Romano cheese or regular Romano (I prefer Pecorino)
1 Tablespoon of sugar

DIRECTIONS - No joke here. Mix it all together. Let rest while prepping your dough. Super easy, massively tasty.

TEA TRICKS

Tea is not just a wonderful beverage both hot and cold. Tea has a multitude of uses which makes it extra thrifty.

-Polish furniture with a small amount of brewed tea on a cloth. It will help clean the wood and shine it up too. It also works great on wood floors as a follow up to your regular cleaning. Use small amounts and let air dry.

-Fill a spray bottle with some brewed tea and use it to clean glass and mirrors around the home. This works really well on greasy fingerprints. How do fingerprints get so greasy anyway?

-If you fill that spray bottle with black tea, it is supposed to also work wonders on killing dust mites by lightly spraying around. Definitely check that it will not stain by testing areas.

-Used tea bags placed in a small bowl or open container can assist in removing refrigerator odors.

-Just like cucumber, cooled tea bags work wonders on swollen eyes and are calming and soothing. It is always nice to put used ones in the fridge just in case.

-Smelly feet can be relieved with a bath in tea. The tanins in the tea work wonders in taking the smell out.

-Tenderize tougher cuts of meat by letting it marinate in black tea.

-Help heal plantar warts by placing a used tea bag on the area for 20 minutes a day.

-Take the ouch out of razor burn and help healing by placing a wet tea bag on the area.

EDUCATIONAL SAVINGS

I was reading the other day that college tuition costs are going up and the assistance that students can get are going down. It is a great time to look again at where you can look into sending the kids to college perhaps for free. The colleges below are free but some will also have additional room and board and others specific requirements for living in the area, but it is worth a good long look.

The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York City has programs in Art, Architecture, and Engineering. Their merit based scholarships are full scholarships for all their enrolled students.

Webb Institute in Glen Cove, New York was named to the Princeton Review's list of 50 "Best Value" Private Colleges for 2009. Their major is Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. Students live and study on the shores of Long Island Sound.

If music is your child's thing, you might want to check out the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. The Curtis Institute of Music is one of the world's leading music schools and offers merit based full-tuition scholarships to the college. Competition is high as they only accept about 160 students a year apparently even more competitive than Juliard. The education is very individualized. They also have free online classes.

Berea College in Kentucky is a liberal arts college where students work on campus instead of paying tuition. The work study is mandatory. All students are awarded a four year tuition scholarship.

Barclay College is a Bible college located in Haviland, Kansas. Barclay College has bachelor’s degree programs in Pastoral Ministry, Youth Ministry, Christian Elementary Education, Sports and Recreational Leadership, Business Administration, and other fields. Associate’s degrees are available in Biblical Studies and General Studies. Barclay College currently offers free tuition to all on-campus students as posted here.

Deep Springs College is a two-year college whose two-year scholarship is valued at $50,000. It is very prestigious and highly competitive as they only accept about 10 to 15 students a year. This is a male only college located in California on a cattle ranch and alfalfa farm. The students often transfer to very high profile schools upon completion of their two year program.

College of the Ozarks is in Missouri and is another college where tuition is taken care of through work programs. It is a conservative and Christian college. Their focus is also on students with financial need and specifically in the Ozarks area, though they will accept students from outside that area, but priority is given to those students from the area first.

A college with a similar goal for providing a higher education for the students with lower income is Alice Lloyd College in Kentucky. It is a liberal arts work college. Tuition is guaranteed to full-time students residing in Alice Lloyd College’s 108-county Central Appalachian service area and their mission is to educate mountain people for positions of leadership(from the college website).

Okay...so here in Arizona, your child would not qualify for the two colleges above, but considering how many of us have moved here from elsewhere, you might want to share this information with someone who might qualify.

United States Military Academy in West Point, New York Tuition again is free, but there is a service requirement upon graduation. This is a wonderful school and a fabulous opportunity, but not one to be taken lightly. From the website: A West Point cadetship includes a fully funded four-year college education. Tuition, room, board, medical and dental care are provided by the U.S. Army. As members of the Armed Forces, cadets also receive an annual salary of more than $6,500. This pay covers the cost of uniforms, books, a personal computer, and living incidentals. By law, graduates of West Point are appointed on active duty as commissioned officers and serve in the U.S. Army for a minimum of five years.

Lastly, Harvard has many scholarship opportunities but in particular, they have something pretty cool in that they will waive the parental contribution for families who earn less than $65,000 (as of 2012 it was $60,0000) and home equity will no longer be considered a resource when determining family contribution. COOLEST THING EVER
Now this is not going to be pretty, but I have heard time and time again how you can take green onions (or scallions) and put them in a jar of water and just keep cutting the green part to use in cooking. I tried it out when I could purchase a small bunch of green onions for 50 cents, and I have been able to use the green part (chives?) over and over again. It just keeps growing. Every penny saved helps. :)

Are you a Diamondbacks fan? Why not head over to Chase Field for the 9th annual Arizona Diamondbacks FanFest. I am really trying to eat more healthfully so I looked for some great recipes for you that are low in calories but also nice on the budget.

Get paid back for items you buy anyway. I've mentioned it before, and I am mentioning it again. If you haven't yet, sign up for Savingstar.com. Register your store loyalty cards (I have my CVS and my Fry's card signed up), pick the available savings that you want to upload to your card and when you buy those items, the savings goes into an account. Once you have saved at least $5, you can cash in with an Amazon gift card, Pay Pal, a bank deposit or donation to American Forrests. Does it add up? Yes. I pick almost everything and if I buy the item great. I do not buy anything just to get the cash back. So it has taken some time, but I have received almost $18 for just doing what I normally do...grocery shop for what I normally buy. Check them out at this link.

Now that the new year is in full swing, I thought it would be cool to find things that we can make this year rather than buying in order to save some extra money.

CLEAN
Natural Disinfectant - This recipe is from the frugal life.
1 Quart of water
20 drops of tea tree oil
20 drops of lavender essential oil
10 drops of lemon essential oil
Yes essential oils can cost a bit when you first buy them but nothing crazy and they last for a long time and have many uses.

COOK
Stop Stop Stop buying broth and stock and start making your own.
Here is an easy recipe in a nutshell. All you need is a crock pot.
1 Chicken carcass - I bake a lot of whole chickens and then take off as much meat as possible. Whatever is left will be used to make stock. Your leftover rotisserie from the grocer works too! Take the carcass and place in the crock pot. Add an onion and whatever else you may have. I like to save excess veggies and use them for this. If you don't have any veggies or even onion, no problem just put it in the pot anyway. Fill the crock pot up with water covering the chicken and filling the pot up a little over 3/4 of the way. Put pot on low and let it go. This is a great thing to do when going off to work. The stock is ready when you get home! Strain the stock and freeze portions for cooking. The stock will be thick and gelatinous. You can make a similar stock with left over beef bits (you know the ones that you simply wont eat).

COOK 2
In my house we use butter. My parents bought margarine when I was a kid, and that was one thing that I decided I would not do even if I had to make butter myself. This is a great recipe which can be fun for kids too.
1 Quart Mason Jar
1 Quart or larger bowl
1 Strainer
1 pinch of salt
1/2 Pint of Heavy Whipping Cream (I like to use half for whipped cream and the other half for butter)
1 marble (yes a marble)

Directions: Chill jar and marble in the fridge for about an hour. This will really help your butter set quickly. Pour cream into the jar, drop in the marble, close the lid tightly and shake. As you shake the cream will get thicker and coat the jar. Eventually you wont really hear the marble because the cream will muffle it, but keep shaking, because you will hear the marble again when the cream starts to clump up into butter. Give it about another 15 minutes and then pour the contents into the bowl with the strainer. This separates the butter from the buttermilk. Pour the buttermilk into a container and put in the fridge (you can use this for a great salad dressing base). Now clean out your bowl and put the butter in. Pour cold water over and cover the butter. Strain water from butter again and again and again (don't save this water) until the water comes out clear (you want to remove any remaining buttermilk so it wont sour your butter). Stir and press your butter against the bowl with a wooden spoon until all the buttermilk and water is worked out add the salt at this point. Once you definitely have the water out, put it in the fridge to harden up for an hour. Now the cool thing about this is you can get the kids into the activity so they can learn how to do it, have a little fun, and see what goes into making something so simple. It is also something you can do while enjoying some television without feeling guilty, because you are being productive.

Facial cleanser and moisturizer.
This one is so great! You don't even have to make anything! It is another minor investment with some serious staying power. Spanish Extra Virgin Olive Oil (for a time saver we will call it SEVO) is an amazing facial cleanser and moisturizer. Since all you need is to put some in a small container to keep at the ready there is little direction other than how to use. So here we go:
Pour about a palm full (like a tablespoon size) of SEVO out and massage gently into your face for two minutes. Then take a wash cloth and hot water (sink hot not stove hot). Wring out the cloth and place on your face for a minute. Follow that by wiping face with the cloth. Go to bed. I started doing this about two months ago, and it has been amazing. I have not had any winter dry skin on my face. Make sure you use the Spanish and no other kind. It is the best for your face because of the way it is prepared. It cost me a little over $6 for a 17 oz bottle and I have used less than a quarter of the bottle so far. If you are worried about blemishes, look it up. Lots of people have used this and their skin has gotten even better not oilier.

Now I was thinking about learning how to make vinegar and sharing that, but it is a LONG process and probably not so much a money saver as it is just really cool. I plan on looking for the materials I'd need to do it, and if I go for it, I'll be sure to post all about it.

Can you believe it is already 2013? I love the beginning of a new year. There is simply an excitement in the air. Truly I feel like there is just so much opportunity. Like the opportunity to look at things in a new way. That is one of the things I'll be doing this year with leftovers. Looking at them differently to see what kind of options I can come up with from them. This leftovers idea also extends into repurposing things around the house before we simply get rid of them. Of course, we never just get rid of anything. You never know who can make a treasure out of what you no longer use. So let's get started and see what we can come up with today for thrifty tips.

SAVINGS THAT ADD UP
Don't forget to load up the latest Saving Star coupons to your Fry's and CVS loyalty cards. They are great ways to get extra money without even giving it much though. Just save coupons to your card, and as you buy the items those savings will load into an account that you can cash in for paypal, Amazon gift cards or even deposit into your account.

GREAT RECIPE USING THIS WEEK'S SALES
Tilapia is on sale at Albertson's this week, and it is the perfect ingredient for fish tacos, and fish tacos are super easy. I have two great recipes to try. The first recipe uses panko crumbs to make your tilapia nice and crunchy (Kikoman has a great panko for a great price almost any time Albertsons). The second recipe is a grilled recipe. Oh, and I totally recommend soft corn tortillas for either. They work great with fish tacos and last a long time in the fridge & freezer. Another great option too is to make the fish in either way and make a salad with some lettuce and crunchy tortilla chips. Either way, they are a great way to take advantage of a good white fish sale.

CLEAN HOUSE
Spring cleaning doesn't just have to be done when the weather starts warming up. Cleaning up and cleaning out is a great thing to do after Christmas. Even if you do a pretty minimal Christmas, you can usually locate some items that you no longer use that you can donate or find other uses for. If you do some serious closet cleaning, you might just find some great shirts that you no longer where, but you would like to still hold onto in another way. Now that the weather is chilly, maybe you could make some cute scarves from your old t-shirts. Check out Kevin & Amanda for a great tutorial for a ringlet scarf. I love this one, because you don't have to sew just cut and tie.

Do you have a lot of books at home, and you are finally at that point where you realize you will not be reading them all again and again? Trade them out through PaperbackSwap.com. My favorite book trading site. List the books you would like to trade. With your first ten listed, you will even get free credit for two books. Make your wish list for books you would like, and when they are available, you can request them with your credits, and the other book owner will send them to you. You only pay when you send books out which is at an average of about $2.47 for media mail. It is a great way to get some good reads and clear out those shelves. You can also do the same thing with your movies and music with SwapaCD & SwapaDVD.

FREE ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS

Lowe's has a surprise Build & Grow Clinic on January 12th. They don't say what the clinic will be, but these are always a great time for the kids and of course totally free. Follow the link to sign up for the clinic in your area.

Lego builds happen each month at your local Lego store. Here in AZ, we only have one in Chandler and Glendale, but these are a great opportunity for your kids ages 6-14 to build a great toy and have lots of fun for free. According to the Lego website the build will be on Tuesday, January 8th.

RECIPE

The weather is officially on the cold side which means it is a perfect time to start making lots and lots of soup! I think my husband looks forward to winter just for the opportunity to eat lots of chili. Soups can be a huge saver on so many levels. Soup can save money because you can totally utilize leftovers. They save time because you can toss almost all the ingredients in a crock pot and just go. Oh and back to saving cash, a crock pot uses much less energy than cooking on the stove. With ground beef on sale this week at Albertsons, chili in the crock pot is a great cooking option. Make tacos the night before and use the left over already seasoned taco meat in your chili. I stretch the protein with beans and add just about any veggie I can think of. This recipe is more of a chili soup.

Chili Soup
Ingredients
1 lb ground beef
1 bunch celery chopped
6 cups of water
1 large can of whole peeled tomatoes (I'm not sure of the size just make it big you know the kind that look almost like a coffee can)
1 can of tomato soup (any brand)
1 green bell pepper chopped (or buy a bag of Kroger frozen chopped bell pepper)
1 yellow onion chopped (or half a bag of Kroger frozen chopped onions)
1 large can of red kidney beans (rinse and drain)
1 large can of pink beans or pinto beans (rinse and drain)
1 regular sized can of black beans (rinse and drain)
2 Tbs chili powder
1 Tbs cumin
1 tsp salt
1 tsp cayenne pepper
1 tsp pepper
1/2 tsp garlic
1/4 cup of corn flour (will mix with water to use as a thickener)

Directions:
Chop celery and add it and about 4 cups of water to the crock pot, follow with beans, tomatoes, tomato soup and all spices. In a frying pan, fry onions and peppers for about five minutes before adding ground beef. Brown ground beef and add spices. Once the meat is fully browned, add it to the crock pot mixture. Set on low and let it go. Six hours later or more mix corn flower with water to create a thickening mixture. You will want it to look thick like a gravy, not watery. Mix this well into your chili and add it to the crock pot. Let cook about 25 more minutes.

CRAFTY GIFTS

Today I have some foodie related crafty gifts to share.

Cookie Jar Recipe - Cherry Hooty Creeks

I got this recipe from Allrecipes.com, but I changed it from cranberry to cherries, because that is what I had on hand. Cranberries add a nice red color to the cookie recipe. In addition to some pics, check out this link for the recipe and instructions to be printed out with the gift.

What you need: 1 quart sized jar, measuring cups and funnel (makes it easier to direct the ingredients as you pour them into the jar)

INGREDIENTS (layer the ingredients in this order)
-5/8 cup flour
-1/2 cup rolled oats
-1/2 cup of flour
-1/2 teaspoon baking soda
-1/2 teaspoon salt
-1/3 cup packed brown sugar
-1/3 cup white sugar
-1/2 cup dried cherries
-1/2 cup white chocolate chips
-1/2 cup chopped pecans

Using a funnel can really help get all the ingredients to layer nicely. You can use the spout kind of like a hose.

It gets really pretty quickly. I used the funnel for all the powders and the white sugar. I spooned out the brown sugar.

The cherries make a good substitute for cranberries.

The recipe calls for chopped pecans. I just broke them up by hand.

Easy as can be. Of course you can doll it up more, but really it is just a great treat.

Spices & Rubs

Another great gift is a gift of spices and rubs. You can make batches as large or small as you would like. Here are the recipes that I used but modified as the recipes were for large batches. This l ink takes you to the originals. I picked up two from Real Simple.

Some of the spices I had on hand already. The rest were extremely inexpensive and left me with extras. Now I just need a few more jars for the spares.

BBQ Rub-
-6 tablespoons of light brown sugar
-7 tablespoons of paprika
-5 tablespoons of oregano
-3 teaspooons of instant coffee (I don't buy instant coffee, but I save my free samples for recipes)
-2 teaspoons of kosher salt
-1 teaspoon of garlic
-1 teaspoon of black pepper

Combine in container, stir with knife and seal.

Mediterranean Herb Rub
-8 tablespoons of oregano
-3 tablespoons of dried thyme
-1 tablespoon dried sage
-1 tablespoon fennel seeds
-1 tablespoon kosher salt
-1 tablespoon black pepper

Combine in container, stir with knife and seal.

Cajun Blackening Spices (Recipe from About.com)

- 2 tablespoons paprika
- 1 tablespoon ground dried oregano
- 1 tablespoon ground dried thyme
- 1 tablespoon cayenne pepper
- 1 teaspoon finely ground black pepper
- 1 teaspoon finely ground white pepper
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder

Combine in container, stir with knife and seal.

CRAFTY GIFT

Make a tie key chain. This is a super simple craft that is really so easy, the kids can do it. So easy I can do it. :) I started this tie key chain with one tie and then made some more.

What you need:

Key rings
Old ties

1 -Take the narrow end of your tie and pull it through the key ring with the tie's seam facing down.

2 -Fold the tail of the tie (the narrow end) under so you can see the seam.

3 -Wrap the tail over the top of the tie covering the key ring.

4 -Wrap the tie around to the other side so you again see the seam and it looks like a tie's knot.

5 -Push the tail through the ring and then under and through the tie knot.

6 -Tighten the tie.

7 -Snip the end of the larger part of the tie. You can now glue it to keep it from fraying and can also pin it with an earring stud to make a tie tack.

CRAFTY GIFT - For Guys!
It took me FOREVER to figure out a decent guy crafty gift. I have a few planned now, but we'll start with a duct tape wallet. :)

I have never made one of these before so truly anyone, yes anyone can do it. Here's what you need:

Roll of duct tape. I used Duck brand.
Scissors
Ruler
Clean surface that the tape wont get stuck to. I used a wooden TV tray.

Explaining this can be a bit difficult. I am going to do my best but also include a link to the WikiHow page I found in order to make my wallet.

1 - Pull off a strip of tape about 8 inches long and lay it face up.

2 - Pull another strip off and place it face down along the strip covering roughly half of the strip.

3 - Fold the sticky part of the bottom strip over the top and flip the strip over.

4 - Add another strip face down covering the sticky half of the bottom strip and repeat process several times.

5 - When you have a large enough rectangle fold remaining sticky tape over the shiny side and fold lengthwise. At this point you can determine your wallet size. If it is too large you can cut it down and refold until it looks good. The tutorial says to not go beyond 6 inches by 8 inches. Tape the ends together to make a pocket.

6 - Make another rectangle by following the steps 1 to 4. Go about half the size as your last one. Cut this in half to make two squares. Tape these squares into the inside of the wallet and secure by taping to the inside pocket and outsides of the wallet while leaving open pockets facing the inside fold of the wallet.

7 - Make credit card holders by following steps 1 to 4. This time make a long strip. Cut this strip in half and use it to make credit card holders by staggering inside the wallet and taping the sides and bottom areas. Use a credit card or driver's license as a guide so you make sure it fits right.

8 - TADA!!!!!

CRAFTY GIFT

I am on the hunt for a good gift to make a guy...as of yet, nothing is screaming out to me. But I loved making these epsom salt bottles and votive holders. They are super easy too!

What you need:

Glass jars and bottles (I used an old relish jar, two Snapple bottles and a Christmas tree candy jar that I got for cheap at Walmart. I save up jars all the time, because you never know what you can use them for. Mason jars would work well for this too.
Modge Podge
Epsom salts
Food coloring (not necessary but it can make a nice effect)
Paint brush
Spray Gloss

1- Take clean jar and paint on a thick coat of Modge Podge (not so thick that it is drippy).

2- Pour epsom salts onto a plate or wax paper and roll Modge Podge coated glass into the salts or pour salts over the jar.

2A- If you want you can add food coloring to the salts to make a sea glass effect. Just add a few drops and stir.

3 - Set coated glass to dry for a few hours. Follow drying with spraying the coated glass with spray gloss (I used Krylon). Spray and let rest for 20 minutes before respraying 3 to 4 times.

4 - Put votive candle or LED votive inside for a pretty effect.

THANKSGIVING
Now this is not your typical thrifty tip, but there are several community Thanksgiving celebrations that I found out about here in Arizona that I wanted to share with you. This is by no means every place, but these are the ones I have located. If I find more, I will definitely list them here:

Queen Creek - November 17
Central Christian Church's Queen Creek campus and Canyon State Academy are offering an annual community Thanksgiving dinner to the Queen Creek area on Saturday, November 17th from 3 to 5 pm at Canyon State Academy located at 20061 East Rittenhouse Road. This dinner is free.

Chino Valley - November 20

Chino Valley Word of Life Assembly Church will host a free community Thanksgiving on Tuesday, November 20th from 4 to 7 pm. Chino Valley Word of Life Church is located at 490 West Road 1 North in Chino Valley.

Tucson - November 21
Thanksgiving dinner and Community Blood Drive at Picture Rocks Community Center at 3:30 pm located at 5615 North Sanders Road. The blood drive will run from 1 to 4 pm.

Payson - November 22
Free Community Thanksgiving at 1206 North Beeline Hwy in Payson. There will be three seating times: 11:30 am, 12:30 pm, and 1:30 pm. Dinner is free but tickets can be picked up so they can better prepare for how many will be attending. Volunteers can help out by calling 928-476-2151. Volunteers will also deliver a Thanksgiving meal to the homebound. Call by November 19th to arrange that delivery by calling 928-474-2151

Prescott - November 22
Community Thanksgiving meal - Salvation Army held from 10:30 am to 1:00 pm at Prescott Mile High Middle School located at 300 South Granite Street in Prescott

Sedona - November 22
Sedona Elks Lodge at 110 Airport road will host their annual free community Thanksgiving dinner with live music. Dinner will be served from 11 am to 3:00 pm. Volunteers are welcome call 928-282-7571. They served 1086 meals last year!

Tucson - November 22
St. Demetrios Greek Orthdox Church will host the Salvation Army Thanksgiving Community Dinner from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. St. Demetrios is located at 1145 East Fort Lowell Rd in Tucson.

CRAFTY GIFT
Because I love all things beauty related and because I have lots of canning jars, I thought that it would be fun to make a yummy sugar scrub. You can make a sugar scrub with just about anything you have on hand. I happened to have some lemon on hand so the choice was easy. Here is a recipe for a simple, pretty sugar scrub. Homemade sugar scrub, homemade bath salts (yes we'll probably go there too), some nice bath scrunchies or sponges and maybe a towel or bath pillow can make a nice gift basket this Christmas. Here is the ridiculously simple recipe.

1 Cup of sugar
1/2 Cup of oil (I used coconut oil. You can use extra virgin olive oil, but I find it can overpower your scents)
3 teaspoons lemon juice
Zest of one lemon

DIRECTIONS:
Combine sugar, oil, lemon juice to make a sugary paste (feel free to add more sugar or oil depending on desired consistency).

Add in lemon zest and stir well.

No joke...that is it! Easy as can be and usually there is enough left over to add to any little container you may have at home for you. Make batches however you like by just doubling up.

THRIFTY GIFT

Christmas is coming soon. In fact it is about 46 days away. I thought a fun thing to do up until then is share some tips and tutorials on gifts that you can make for Christmas. There will be a new gift each week

Today's gift...Moonsand or Cloudsand. Same stuff really just different names. Moonsand and Cloudsand are great for sensory tables for kids. They are fun for molding and shaping, and really just feel pretty awesome. I used two different recipes and they were both really easy and under $10 to make. I followed two recipes for this. Here's what you need:

Four cups of sand
2 cups of corn starch
1 cup of water

OR

9 cups of flour (I bought two 5 lb bags for $1.50 each and used part of one)
1 1/4 cups of baby oil (I already had the generic baby oil)
(No need for another pic of ingredients)

Sand Directions: This could not be easier. Measure out sand (I picked mine up at the craft store for $2.99 a bag- I bought 2) and corn starch (the corn starch was on sale for 16 oz for $1.50 perfect measurement), mix together thoroughly.

Slowly pour in the cup of water and stir thoroughly.

At first it clumps up big time, but it is broken up and mixed easily.

Pros - Molds nicely. Can re-energize it for molding with some water spritzing.

Cons - The sand I used was a bit stinky, BUT this would definitely keep one from popping it into their mouths.

Flour Directions: Super simple. I measured out a half recipe of four cups of flour and 3/4 cup of baby oil. The recipe mixed really quickly. The oil balled up a bit, but it really molded nicely and it felt soft like a cloud.

Pros - Molds nicely, mixed quickly, smelled lovely.
Cons - None that I can think of really.

I made both batches in plastic shoe boxes that I picked up at Goodwill (50% off sale so they averaged 75 cents each). The boxes make nice storage and packaging for the gift. Both sands were easy to break up and remold again and again. Both were very inexpensive. Give it a try.
