Helms Happy To Party On In 'Hangover 2'

Stars Return For Sequel To 2009 Blockbuster Hit

Even though it's been two years since he starred in "The Hangover," Ed Helms says he's still hasn't quite adjusted to the whirlwind of attention and praise the blockbuster comedy has earned worldwide.

In a way, Helms described, trying to wrap your head around the success of the highest-grossing R-rated comedy of all time is like, well, waking up with a hangover (minus the blackout, of course).

"My head is spinning for sure -- and it may never stop for the rest of my life," Helms said with a laugh during a recent interview.

Lucky for Helms, he got the opportunity to party on with his fellow cast mates and crew members for "The Hangover Part II," the hotly-anticipated sequel to the 2009 blockbuster that opens in theaters Thursday. Helms admits that he and the other members of the original movie's so-called "Wolfpack" -- Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis and by proxy, director Todd Phillips -- approached the idea of a sequel gingerly, knowing that if they were going to wake up with another "Hangover," it had to be unique.

"When we were considering on doing a sequel, it came down to a couple things. We all loved each other and we wanted to work together again -- that we knew for sure," Helms said. "But we were also proud of the original 'Hangover' and didn't want to tarnish it with some kind of half-witted effort of a sequel just to put a few more dollars in everyone's pockets. We agreed to do it only if the material was there and actually delivered something worth doing that we could all be proud of as actors and creatives."

Helms said that it didn't take long for the team to realize that moving forward with a sequel was the right thing to do.

"When the first draft of the script came in, everyone was just electrified," Helms recalled. "The feeling was just, 'Hell, yes! Let's do this.'"

Helms said the biggest change that had to be made was in location, which is why "The Hangover Part II" relocates from Las Vegas to Thailand. It's there were Stu (Helms) is supposed to marry his fiancé, Lauren (Jamie Chung), and where he, Phil (Cooper), Alan (Galifianakis) and Doug (Justin Bartha) are supposed to avoid having a bachelor party.

But the decision to have just one beer (and in sealed bottles, no less) finds the wolfpack waking up in the seedy underbelly of Bangkok with no memory of the night before -- and this blackout has bigger implications than any of them could ever have imagined.

Helms said Bangkok was the perfect locale for "The Hangover Part II," mainly because there's something that feels dangerous about the city.

"It provides one of the few options where you can go and heighten the world that these characters are in," Helms explained. "'The Hangover' goes far pretty far in Las Vegas. It's a pretty bawdy, out-there movie, but with the sequel, Todd wanted to really find a location with as much if not more personality that Las Vegas. He sure found that in Bangkok."

Upping The Action

Helms is also thrilled that "The Hangover Part II" distinguishes itself from the first film by virtue of having much more action.

"In every way the action is ramped up," said Helms. "The stakes of the story are a lot higher. In fact, it's much more intense in terms of the action and the comedy -- they're both out there farther than anything seen in the first movie. "

Helms, who also stars on the hit NBC sitcom "The Office," is also jazzed that there's more character development in "The Hangover Part II" -- one of the big benefits for an actor doing a sequel.

"The character arcs are more extreme. It's a lot of fun, but it's also kind of a 'Holy s---' experience," Helms said, laughing.

Stu Gets His

In the first film, Stu, of course, took a huge amount of abuse -- verbally from his fiancé, Melissa (Rachael Harris), and physically by getting a tooth knocked out (a painful irony, given that his character is a dentist). The parade of misfortune unfortunately continues for him in "The Hangover Part II," including a new Mike Tyson-inspired face tattoo -- and that's the least troublesome incident he experienced during the disastrous night.

"Poor Stu, he just has no say in the matter," Helms said with a laugh. "He gets beat up worse than anybody."

But then again, there is an upside to being the character. After all, Stu attracts Heather Graham in the first "Hangover" and Jamie Chung in the sequel -- and there's no arguing that both of them are drop-dead gorgeous.

"I actually really like the idea (of Stu marrying Chung's character) because as much abuse as he gets heaped on him during the course of the movie, it's clear that he's a good guy and there's something winning about him," Helms said.

Beautiful women notwithstanding, making "The Hangover Part II" complete for Helms -- if not for everybody -- is the return of Ken Jeong, who reprises his role of whacked-out mobster Mr. Chow. Watching Jeong transform from a person into the character during filming is a sight to behold, Helms said.

"Ken is so out of control in the best way," Helms said. "He's the most sweet, benevolent and wonderful guy, but then when you set him loose in front of a camera, he just goes berserk. Absolutely nothing is off-limits for him. He is absolutely a true champion of an actor."

No eager crowds for The Beaver

MEL Gibson's long-delayed first movie since he was embroiled in a messy domestic dispute with his ex-girlfriend flopped at the weekend box office in North America.

The Beaver, an offbeat comedy-drama directed by and co-starring his close friend, Jodie Foster, earned just US$104,000 (S$128,100) during its first three days of limited release in 22 theatres, its distributor said on Sunday.

Its per-theatre average of US$4,745 ranks at No 62 among the 139 limited-release movies tracked this year by Box Office Mojo.

Among recent prestige debuts in a similar number of theatres, Black Swan opened to an US$80,000 per-theatre average last December and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo to US$9,900 in March last year.

The US$21-million film will expand across North America on May 20, coinciding with a screening at the Cannes Film Festival, said distributor Summit Entertainment.

Gibson, 55, stars as a suicidal businessman who finds salvation in a furry hand puppet he has salvaged from the trash. Critics were enthusiastic about his performance, pointing to eerie parallels between his character's alcoholic haze and the actor's own real-life problems.

"If you can get past your feelings for the troubled Gibson, you get to watch a high-wire performance of the highest calibre," said Rolling Stone critic Peter Travers.

Filming was completed more than a year ago, but the release was put on hold after audio tapes were leaked last summer of an angry Gibson threatening the mother of his baby daughter as their brief relationship hit the rocks. REUTERS

Korean reality TV show films in Hawaii

Those in the tourism industry hope a Korean reality television show filmed in Hawaii can attract more visitors to the state.

Korean soap opera station KBS is filming "Challenger," a reality game show at locations on Oahu and the Big Island.

Toby Tamaye, president of Asia consulting firm AT Marketing told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser in Monday's editions that the show is an opportunity to showcase Hawaii for the growing Korean market.

He says 15 percent of Korea's TV viewers are expected to tune in.

Irene Lee of Hawaii Tourism Authority's South Korea contractor tells the newspaper reality shows are Korea's latest entertainment trend and a big draw for the show is popular actor Jung Jin-young.

The show is to air in Korea sometime between June and September.

Ashton Kutcher’s “Two and a half men” salary

Making his return to the television realm, Ashton Kutcher will replace Charlie Sheen on “Two and a Half Men,” though his salary won’t compare with that of his predecessor.

The “Butterfly Effect” star will bank less than $900,000 per episode, rather than Sheen’s reported $1.25 million paycheck!

A source revealed that after Charlie added in his profit participation, he was clearing roughly $2 million per episode.

Still, Ashton is on board for the gig, in which he will play a new character. Apparently Kutcher and producer Chuck Lorre have really hit it off and get along very well.

Beyonce insists there’s no bad blood between her and her father Mathew Knowles after she dispensed with his services as her manager.

The music boss has been behind his daughter ever since she broke through with Destiny’s Child, but the pair parted ways earlier this year.

Speaking out about the split, Beyonce says there was no big falling out between father and daughter.

She says, “It’s not that anything bad happened between us. My family has my support always, and they support me, but when you’ve been working with the same people for 15 years, it’s natural to eventually have your own ideas.

“I believe that parents prepare their kids for the moment that they’re on their own (and), at this point, I’m taking everything my dad and my mother have taught me, and I’m able to do things my way.

Meeting America & the World with Mr. Simon or “Here I Am, The Only Living Boy In first Ave”

There is a slightly dangerous feeling around seeing your childhood musical heroes perform for the first time, the potential for deflation and disappointment, or, from a writers stand, that it will be just about everything you hoped for and your happy blubbering infantile soul won’t be able to form a coherent sentence around the experience. (Case in point, last months Bright Eyes concert, which left me a flattened wreck and so I guess I’ll just keep that treasure to myself, thank you very much.) But with Paul Simon and his wonderful band, packed onstage as they were, first Avenue was alight with joy as he pulled songs from across his career and kept a two-hour-long set alive and vibrant.

Simon wasn’t particularly effusive from stage, a nominal greeting and a “thank you” here and there, but he did quip “Man, it’s great to play in a club,” which had the same timbre as the line “It’s great to play a neighborhood concert,” from the legendary 1981 Simon & Garfunkel Concert in Central Park. It was one of those little things, that to a fan of Simon’s body of work, resonated throughout the night- that some things really haven’t changed that much for Simon, he remains wry and understated and very human, which gives him so much staying power. Opening up with “The Boy in the Bubble”, it took a second for Simon’s vocal mic to get going, but after, that, it was on a roll and his incredibly tight band kept the backing rhythms pulsating and driving throughout. It is one of my personal favorite things about Simon and his music that he has pushed his own rhythmic sensibilities throughout his career, borrowing heavily of course from Africa, South America and the Caribbean, but it’s a beautiful thing to hear songs from Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M. to still Crazy After all These Years to Graceland and The Rhythm of the Saints to the new So beautiful and So what with the same writerly voice comfortably positioned in a shifting and expanding sonic landscape.

It is, of course a testament to the band that they kept the dynamics different as the songs shifted tone and shifted into eachother. The tender “Mother and Child Reunion” became the dynamic zydeco of “Rewrite” with a little tempo shift and “Rewrite” also gave everyone a chance to solo and take deserved spotlight turns. The contemplative “Heart and Bones” featured that lost embellishment of American rock music, the saxophone solo (a couple weeks ago, 30Rock made a joke about sax players being put out of work in the modern era, along with travel agents) and I swear to you, cheesy and deadly earnest as it may be, the sax in rock is glorious, graceful thing. Plus, Simon has always walked a line between effectively and cheesily earnest, but last night, he and the band nailed that moment of sweet release. The second half of the main set continued to feature hits well-placed in between newer songs. Simon moved straight from “The Obvious Child” into “The Only Living Boy in New York” and although the wear on his voice caused him to totally miss the note in the first falsetto shift of “Living Boy”, he pulled it back together and made that gorgeous, goosebump-raising tune about the never-ending search for meaning fill up the room and envelop the crowd. “Diamonds on the Soles of her Shoes” also got roars, obviously and going straight from that into “Gumboots” was a powerful, driven way to close out the show, not that anyone was going to go anywhere for a good long while.for the first encore, Simon came out solo and stood in the spotlight to deliver a chilling, gorgeous arrangement of “The Sound of Silence”. Sung with a slightly clipped, minor-key bent, the elegiac tune carried a thread of resonance of the protests against Vietnam, malaise, the backlash against cut-throat capitalism and all the way up to the fractured digital age- “all the people bowed and prayed/ to the neon god they made” has a specific irony in the glow of smartphone screens. The song, which pleads for listening, got its wish in the Mainroom as there wasn’t a breath audible in the room until the whoops at the end. Then the band re-joined for a killer four song medley, including a cover of The Beatles’ “Here comes The Sun”, such an apropos for a beauty-and-light starved Minnesota winter crowd.Wrapping it up with a final encore of “still Crazy After all These Years”, Simon introduced the full band and thanked the audience profusely. The crowd, for their part, resolutely refused to leave, cheering on the little man and his huge music. I had this review half written, closing out with a pun about “still great after all these years,” when I was made aware of the Gimme Noise post griping about the sound quality and calling the show a “monumental pity”. from up in the front, from the room-wide roars for encores and from the fact that there wasn’t a bigger crowd pressing desperately up to the front to hear, it was a wonderful experience personally and I thought for the audience. The concert wasn’t transformational and it didn’t have to be, it felt really well-executed and did justice to the ideal developed through years of listening to the music. Maybe the monumental pity is that Simon doesn’t get to play clubs more often, or that people who only read the Gimme Noise review will use it to shrug off that they missed out, and they did. Maybe the pity, also, is that a reviewer who feels like he isn’t in the best position to hear the music wouldn’t move around to find a better spot. European Court of Human Rights rejects limiting news on celebrity indiscretion

Strasbourg, France (AHN) – The European Court of Human Rights rejected a bid by a known car racer to limit news on celebrity indiscretions.

The ruling comes at a time that bloggers are circumventing super injunctions issued by British courts in favor of celebrities by posting a list of notorious celebrities on Twitter.

The ECHR decision is an offshoot of a case filed by Max Mosley, former president of the governing body of Formula One auto racing. Mosley asked the court to require news organizations to inform the subjects of their article before publishing stories about celebrity indiscretions.

Mosley filed the lawsuit because of a 2008 article in the British tabloid “The News of the World” which bannered a story about him having a Nazi orgy with five prostitutes, based on a video shot secretly by one of the orgy participants.

Mosley said the newspaper did not check the story with him prior to publication. A British court favored Mosley and fined the paper almost $100,000 (GBP 60,000) because the story failed to provide evidence of Nazi behavior in the orgy.

But the ECHR rejected Mosley’s claim that British media law breached the European Convention on Human Rights by failing to protect him from intrusion into his private life. The court said Britain has sufficient privacy protection laws in place. Mosley plans to appeal the court’s decision to the Grand Chamber.

Celebrities often resorted to court orders to secure injunctions against publications that run stories on extramarital affairs or sexual liaisons of public orders. The injunctions even prohibit media from reporting the issuance of the court gag order.

But even British Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt admitted that technology and social media networking sites such as Twitter are making a mockery of the country’s privacy laws. However, Hunt agreed with an earlier comment by British Prime Minister David Cameron that it should be the parliament who will decide where to draw the line on the country’s privacy law, not the courts.

Hunt said he would discuss a review of the country’s regulatory environment with Minister of Justice Ken Clarke.

Zac Goldsmith, a Tory MP who secured a gag order, spoke in favor of super injunctions because of the alleged failure of newspapers to distinguish between public interest and prurient interest to some members of the public.

Goldsmith favored a new privacy law that would allow media to perform its duty without fear, but would protect people’s privacy, unless there is a good reason to expose their indiscretions. He admitted the super injunctions were overreaction from celebrities.

UFC fighter Brock Lesnar suffers from a debilitating digestive disease called diverticulitis — which doctors and patients suffering with both report causes extreme stomach pain. Lesnar was hospitalized back in 2009 due to his medical condition — and had to reschedule his fight against Shane Carwin. Lesnar whooped Carwin’s ass when they fought a few months later. Lesnar is currently being treated at the famous Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.”

Revamped 'Spiderman' Previews Hit Broadway

After weeks of revisions to address safety concerns, a retooled and injury-free version of 'Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark' premiered its first preview performance Thursday night in New York City.

According to E! Online, the show's overall concept, script, and music were all revamped in an effort to make the Broadway musical both entertaining and safe -- two things the original show reportedly lacked.

Julie Taymor, who originally sat in the director's chair for the seemingly cursed show, has been replaced by relatively new Broadway director Philip William McKinley to make some necessary changes. And one of those changes is -- wait for it -- adding flying sequences.

The flying stunts may come as a surprise to some, especially after several actors were injured trying perform them late last year. One stunt actor, Christopher Tierney, took a 20-foot plunge during a show, landing him in surgery with several broken bones. The injuries, plus cast departures citing safety concerns, eventually led to the musical's overhaul after the opening was continually delayed.

In addition to the script and action changes, Bono and The Edge have been hard at work adding new songs into the mix.

"What was great about 'Turn Off the Dark' 1.0 was unusual and rare: magic, a pop-up Pop-Art opera with a bit of rock 'n' roll circus thrown in," Bono wrote in an email to the New York Times. "What was not right about it was a catalog of commonplace problems -- story knots, bad sound and finally a failure to cohere, meaning that the whole was not greater than the sum of the parts, as wonderful as some of those parts were."

Those behind the $5 million overhaul of 'Spiderman' have their fingers crossed that it was worth it. Though Thursday night's preview was less than sold out -- empty seats were reportedly very noticeable -- there's enough time for positive buzz to bring in the crowds in time for its June 14 opening night.

Prince William and his new bride, Kate (a.k.a Catherine), Duchess of Cambridge, have snuck away to enjoy a private honeymoon, St. James Palace confirmed to Us Weekly on Tuesday.

"They have gone [on honeymoon]," a palace rep says. "We are not confirming locations or commenting on any speculation on where they may be going for their private honeymoon, but we can confirm that they have left."

"We are asking for their privacy to be respected during their honeymoon," continued St. James Palace.

The Daily Mail speculates that the royal couple may have retreated to a private island in the Seychelles. Other speculated honeymoon locales have included Australia, Mustique, Jordan, Kenya (where William proposed) and elsewhere.

One trip that's not so under wraps? Their official North American overseas visit, which begins in late June with a tour of Canada, wrapping up with a much-anticipated stop in California. It will be Kate's very first visit to the United States.

The couple's secret escape comes a week and a half after they swapped vows in a historic April 29 ceremony at London's Westminster Abbey. Following the nuptials -- attended by 1,900 guests -- William and Catherine spent a private weekend at home in their native U.K.

In the meantime, the couple -- who received a new surname, Cambridge, on their wedding day -- are still basking in newlywed glow.

"For day-to-day life, they are the Cambridges," a source tells Us of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. "But behind closed doors they are calling each other Mr. and Mrs. Wales. It's cute."

TMZ has learned ... the person who is suing an internationally famous celebrity for intentionally transmitting herpes has multiple videos of the sex acts that allegedly transmitted the disease -- and now there's a bidding war for the tapes.

TMZ broke the story ... an unnamed plaintiff has sued "an A-list celebrity of substantial fame internationally," claiming the celeb came on to the plaintiff in Las Vegas and swore he was STD free.

The suit claims the celeb actually had herpes, and the pair engaged in "mutual oral copulation, mutual self-gratification, rubbing and massaging each other, play-wrestling, licking and (unprotected) intercourse."

The plaintiff -- who is unnamed and unidentified as either a man or woman -- claims the celeb transmitted the herpes virus and wants more than $20 mil in damages.

Now we've learned ... since we broke the story ... several porn companies have already offered the plaintiff -- through the lawyer, Keith Davidson, a fortune. Youporn.com has offered a cool $1 million, sight unseen, while another company is offering even more.

And get this ... a prominent niche website is also willing to ante up beaucoup bucks -- specifically to entice "bug chasers" to watch. For the uninformed, "bug chasing" is the act of knowingly engaging in sex with someone who has an STD.

Finally ... as for why these alleged Las Vegas sex acts were videotaped, the lawsuit claims, "as the [celebrity] expressed, so they could relive the magic over -- and over -- again."

“Hello Kitty” musical heads to cinemas in 3D

The popular “Hello Kitty in The Magical Land of Oz” musical is going 3D. The musical has been performed at Sanrio Puroland since 2009, but fans of the iconic character will soon get a chance to experience it in 3D on the big screen in Warner Mycal Cinemas throughout Japan.
The “Wizard of Oz”-themed musical was launched in 2009 to celebrate Hello Kitty’s 35th birthday. It is produced by well-known stage director Koike Shuichiro, with costumes and music produced by top staff members of the Takarazuka troupe.
The footage for the cinematic version was shot using six 3D cameras, though part of it was shot in 2D.
Warner Mycal Cinemas will begin screenings on June 18, 2011.

Indian Photographer Wins 2011 Sony World Photography Awards

LONDON – Indian photographer Amit Madheshiya has been named ‘Arts and Culture Photographer of the Year’ at the prestigious Sony World Photography Awards 2011.

Mumbai-based Madheshiya was one of 13 professional category winners presented with an award held at the ceremony at the Odeon in Leicester Square, London, April 27 night.

His winning series of photographs, entitled People Watching Cinema at the Nomadic Talkies, was shot in the remote villages of Maharashtra. It documents people attending night-time film screenings held by a travelling cinema.

The nomadic cinemas travel to the villages, which are located far from fixed-site theatres, once a year and show an eclectic mix of films.

The Sony World Photography Awards is the world’s largest and most comprehensive photography competition.

Amit Madheshiya works as an independent photographer.

For his work on the nomadic cinemas he received an Arts Research Grant from the India Foundation for the Arts, a fellowship from the Cluster of Excellence at Heidelberg University and the Goethe Institute 50 Year Anniversary Grant.

In 2009, his vibrant and thoughtful images on the project won the Sony World Photography Award for Arts and Entertainment, as well as the Grand Award in the Humanity Photo Awards.

In the same year Madheshiya was also declared Emerging Photographer of the Year in India. (PTI)

4th ‘Pirates’ adventure sails to cinemas in 3D! [Philippines]

A larger-than-life Jack Sparrow, in his three-dimensional swashbuckling glory? Get this and more when Walt Disney Pictures’ “Pirates of the Cariibean: On Stranger Tides” sails to theaters in full, immersive 3D.

“On Stranger Tides” is the first “Pirates” flick shot with digital 3D cameras. The filmmakers make good use of the 3D imagery in action sequences, which include a shot where Penelope Cruz’s character, Angelica, tries to stab Depp’s Capt. Jack through a closed door, her sword leaping off the screen right at the audience.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Rob Marshall were interested from the start in doing the movie in 3D, which can boost revenues since fans pay a few dollars more than they do to see 2D versions.

“But the technology scared us a little, only because, you saw ‘Avatar,’ that was all done on sound stages. Nobody had ever taken these cameras out into the jungles and did a big adventure picture,” Bruckheimer says.

“Rob did an enormous amount of research with the cinematographer, and we finally went to Disney and said, ‘Look, we really think we can do this.’ And they thought about it for a while, because it increases the costs, but in the end, they agreed with us and said, ‘Let’s go for it.’”

Meanwhile, Johnny Depp’s tour guide on his “Pirates of the Caribbean” voyages is plotting the course for a fifth installment even before the fourth movie voyages into cinemas.

Bruckheimer says he has a screenplay in the works for a fifth “Pirates” tale after May’s “On Stranger Tides” comes out. Based on the Disney theme-park ride, the original three “Pirates” blockbusters ended up as a trilogy continuing the same key characters and story line. Bruckheimer says “On Stranger Tides” and future “Pirates” flicks will be stand-alone stories continuing the adventures of Depp’s woozy buccaneer Capt. Jack Sparrow.

Bruckheimer and Marshall showed off footage recently at CinemaCon, a Las Vegas convention of theater owners. At test screenings of “On Stranger Tides,” “the audience told us what they loved about it is that it was fresh, it was new, it was a whole new story,” Bruckheimer said in an interview alongside Marshall. “So that will carry over into the next one, too, to give it something fresh and different. As long as the audience embraces this one, we’ll certainly try to make another one. It’s really up to Johnny. He loves the character.”

Geoffrey Rush reprises his role as Jack’s rival, Barbossa, who has switched sides, no longer a pirate but a privateer sailing on the orders of the British monarchy. Penelope Cruz co-stars as the fiery daughter of the pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane).

Marshall popped the question about co-starring in the “Pirates” sequel over dinner with Cruz while he was directing her in the musical “Nine.”

“She jumped out of her chair and said, ‘Oh, my God. I’d love to. I’ve always wanted to do an adventure like this.’ So it was perfect,” Marshall said. “I had mentioned her to Jerry and Johnny, and immediately they said yes, that seems exactly right. Because there are not that many people that really can match him. He’s so unique, and he has so many different characteristics. Charisma and sex appeal. He’s funny and he’s athletic and he’s a strong actor. So who can match that?”

One of the strongest reasons people visit Las Vegas is to experience some of the great entertainment that exists there. And while entertainment used to be secondary, or rather the icing on the cake, to the gambling and gaming opportunities at the luxury casinos, the city has developed into one of the biggest performance scenes in the country. With that in mind, it’s interesting to consider the history of the Vegas performance scene and its subsequent rise.

3D is a fantastic tool to get it right and you expect all the major brands in the world have already begun filming 3D TV commercials and films such as car ads, for example, which seems justified.

But we are ashamed of the major film studios, that a film that is not right to make in 3D in a 3D movie, is for more money to earn at the box office would. The glasses are inconvenient at best, as they steam for the projection and only damage the movie experience, even though the technology is used with the new 3DS Nintento very interesting for us is not a thorn in. Toy Story 3 and The Green Hornet are only two films among the masses shamelessly use these bats, except as a spectator you to you take a lot of LSD, which requires, therefore, that you wear glasses at all, but we should not know that during Films like all films of Robert Zemeckis and Alice in Wonderland by Tim Burton, which are fully justified, I would add that modern Pablo Picasso for his visionary genius. Imagine the educational value of technology as demonstrated in Iron Man
