Jessica Simpson has dismissed speculation she's preparing to undergo cosmetic surgery. The singer was spotted leaving a Los Angeles medical centre on Monday, June 14 and insiders claimed she had been consulting a surgeon about beauty procedures.

But Simpson has laughed off the rumours, insisting she was merely undergoing a medical check-up. In a post on her Twitter.com page, she writes, "True - went to the doctor yesterday. False - plastic surgery."

Simpson has been the subject of beauty criticism ever since splitting from husband Nick Lachey. "When it comes to media criticism, that's just something I have had to train myself - literally train myself - to ignore," she said in an interview. South Africa pulled out all the stops for their FIFA 2010 World Cup kickoff concert in Soweto earlier this evening. The night before the first game of the biggest sports competition in the world, artists from around the world performed for thousands in a celebration of soccer, the Associated Press reports. Parts of the concert were also internationally televised.

After several hours of warm-up acts, South African artists, trumpeter Hugh Masekela and singer Lira, performed several international hits that originated in South Africa.

The Black Eyed Peas then took the stage and performed a medley of their hit songs. Watch their performance of 'I Gotta Feeling' after the jump.

Golden Girl Rue McClanahan dies at 76

US actress Rue McClanahan, star of TV show The Golden Girls, has died following a stroke at the age of 76, her manager has announced.

The award-winning performer played feisty Southern belle Blanche in the popular series.

McClanahan, who underwent heart bypass surgery last year, is the third of the main cast members to pass away.

Only Betty White remains, following the deaths of Estelle Getty and Bea Arthur, who died in 2008 and 2009.

White, 88, recently hosted Saturday Night Live, and fans are lobbying for her to present next year's Academy Awards.

"I treasured our relationship," she said. "It hurts more than I ever thought it would, if that's even possible."

McClanahan had a varied stage career before landing the role of Blanche Devereaux in 1985 when The Golden Girls hit the small screen.

The actress said of her seductive character: "She is in love with life and loves men.

"I think she has an attitude towards women that's competitive. I think basically she's insecure."

Blanche always referred to her father as "Big Daddy" and was the perpetual target of her housemates.

McClanahan won an Emmy for her role in 1987.

Five years later, after The Golden Girls ended, she co-starred alongside White and Getty in a short-lived spin-off called Golden Palace.

Earlier in her career, she had appeared with Arthur in the 1970s sitcom Maude as her best friend and sidekick.

In later years, she continued to appear on TV and on stage, playing the elderly mother of a drag queen in 2008 serial Sordid Lives, which included the filming of a sex scene.

The actress was recovering from knee surgery at the time, but still hung onto a window sill when the bed she was using broke.

McClanahan, who was born in Oklahoma, married six times and wrote a memoir in 2007 entitled My First Five Husbands... And The Ones Who Got Away.

'As the World Turns' matriarch Wagner dies at 91

NEW YORK – Actress Helen Wagner, who played mild-mannered Nancy Hughes on the CBS soap opera "As the World Turns" for more than a half-century and spoke its first words, has died at age 91.

She died Saturday, said the show's New York-based production company, TeleNext Media Inc., which didn't say where she died or what was the cause of her death.

Wagner opened "As the World Turns" when it premiered on April 2, 1956, with the words: "Good morning, dear." She held the Guinness World Record for playing the same role on television for the longest amount of time, 54 years, TeleNext Media said.

"All of us at 'As the World Turns' are deeply saddened by Helen's passing," executive producer Christopher Goutman said in a statement. "She is loved by generations of fans, and while we will miss her greatly Helen will always remain the heart and soul of 'As the World Turns.'"

While Wagner, who was born in Lubbock, Texas, was seen less often in later decades, no other network television performer came close to her run playing a single character.

She was still part of the cast, though with a small presence, in December 2009, when CBS announced that "As the World Turns" was being canceled and its last episode would air in September 2010.

Her final appearance aired April 5, in an episode in which Julianne Moore, a series regular in the 1980s whose two half-sister characters played Wagner's granddaughters, returned for a guest walk-on. The episode was taped in March.

"As the World Turns" was the first daytime TV drama to run a full half-hour rather than 15 minutes. It rose to No. 1 in the daytime ratings and, in the 1970s, was expanded to an hour.

In a 1968 New York Times interview, Wagner called Nancy "a tentpole character."

"Nothing ever happens to Nancy," Wagner said. "She's the one the others come and talk to."

The many fans who liked Nancy/Wagner came and talked to her, too. She told the Times in 1977 that a woman once ran up and kissed her as she shopped at a supermarket.

"She said, 'Oh, Nancy, I've loved you so long I really must kiss you again,' but at that point I managed to escape," Wagner recalled.

Real life intruded on the show in historic fashion on Nov. 22, 1963, when "As the World Turns" was still performed live on air. Wagner's character was talking about upcoming Thanksgiving plans ("I've thought about it, and I gave it a great deal of thought ...") when the broadcast was interrupted mid-sentence with a "CBS News Bulletin" sign.

Viewers then heard Walter Cronkite announcing that President John F. Kennedy had been shot in Dallas. The actors themselves weren't told at the time.

In a 1998 Associated Press interview, Wagner said she wished her character hadn't receded into the background in later years while most of the plot developments happened to the younger characters.

"I don't like the making of Nancy into only an extra figure at parties," she said. "She is too dynamic a person to be made into a ghost."

Still, she loved the storytelling of daytime television and remembered the maze of complex plots from decades earlier, including her own.

Don MacLaughlin, who played Nancy's first husband, Chris Hughes, died in 1986 at age 79, not long after the show celebrated its 30th anniversary with a special program devoted to Chris and Nancy Hughes' 50th wedding anniversary.

Chris' death was then written into the plotline, and Nancy later married a detective named Dan McClosky, played by Dan Frazer. McClosky's battle with Alzheimer's disease gave Wagner/Hughes a meaty problem on-screen for a few years, but the producers eventually killed him off, too.

Wagner, born in 1918, studied drama and music at Monmouth College in Illinois, graduating in 1938. She appeared on Broadway in the 1940s, including a small role in the musical "Oklahoma!" and in off-Broadway and summer stock productions.

In 2002 Wagner received a plaque on the Buddy Holly Walk of Fame in her hometown, TeleNext Media said, and in 2004 she was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

Before gaining her "As the World Turns" gig, she also appeared on early TV shows such as "The Philco Television Playhouse" and a series called "The World of Mr. Sweeney."

She married producer Robert Willey in 1954, and over the years he served as her manager and agent as well as producing some of her stage appearances.

Already, some Nigerians in South Africa are being partnered to prepare Nigerian dishes for those who will come for the concerts and those who might not get into the stadia to see some of the matches.

“The Nigeria Sports and Entertainment Village is a new way of rebranding Nigerian image through sports achievement.

It is a place where all aspects of operations will converge to heighten sports entertainment experience,” she said.

The award plaque and cash reward was received at the event by President Compaore himself, who described the Nigerian singers as the next African export as far as music is concerned.

He, however, presented the award to P-square at his Presidential Villa on Monday, April 5.
