We believe far more small businesses can be successful than the statistics suggest. This can happen if small businesses share in the tools and insights it usually takes decades to learn.

For 3 years I have held my vision in front of me, focused to almost the point of insanity. The days, weeks, months and now years are flying by so quickly it takes my breath away. Churning through each one of my milestones, I have been able to control my need to follow the next shiny object, or brilliant biz idea. Matter of fact, I have been rather proud of my ability to focus!

A year ago, I developed a rash that quickly spread across my chest. It didn’t hurt, so it didn’t stop me at all. In the fall, it changed texture, color and started spreading. Brushing my teeth each morning I would stop thinking about business long enough to wonder what it was, and the minute I left the bathroom, I forgot about it. My husband made me go to the doctor last month, alarmed by how it all looked.

Each medical professional I visited with was alarmed, perplexed and ordered tests. Asked when I had last tested for this or that, I laughed, saying that I had never had one, or it was too long ago to remember. I was chastised severely in each case. I have always told my husband that I don’t go to doctors because all they do is make you do a lot of tests, charge you a bunch of money and send you home with aspirin. I have also told him I just want to be healthy, healthy, healthy, healthy, healthy, dead.

But, I did catch some of their alarm. And the night before all the test results were to be presented to me, I had a very restless night. How would a shhhh… cancer diagnosis…. effect my ability to get to my goals and accomplish my vision? I whiled away the night thinking about how I could multi-task through this next challenge. Got it all figured out and went to sleep.

Fortunately, each test result came back – definitely no cancer. They didn’t know what it was, but they definitely knew what it wasn’t. Big sigh of relief. I told one doctor that thanks to his breast biopsy test, he has forever dashed my hopes of being an exotic strip club dancer. No sense of humor that one. So then I thanked him for doing a lot of tests, charging a bunch of money and I declined the aspirin.

As I drove home, I realized that the doctor visits were the first breaks I had had in my work life for quite some time. This was pathetic. I also figured that the rash was a blessing in disguise, a time for me to change my ways. As I edit the videos prepared by ECO life coach Cassie Parks, I actually started listening to them. She is doing a series on balance for the entrepreneur. I started to follow her suggestions and to actually do the exercises that come with each video. I resolved to take one day off a week from then on. Memorial Day weekend, I even took 2 in a row! Woo Hoo! Lately, each Monday, I pop out of bed, head full of ideas, energy and excitement. I am thinking it is from taking days off!

Taking days off led to something else – I started sleeping more than 2 hours a night! Who would a thunk it! Then, I figured I would go for broke and try to eat right too – too soon to tell on that one, bad habits are hard to break. And finally, I started working out and dancing again. Wow! Now the endorphins are flowing again.

Long story short – to all you super focused entrepreneurs out there – it is really true what they say, really. You really do need time off, for many, many, many reasons. Try it, you will like it! Onward and upward!

How Website Owners Drop Can the Ball in their Search Engine Marketing Efforts.

There are many steps to successful search engine marketing. Proper keyword research and web site optimization are just a part of the equation. Where many entrepreneurs drop the ball, is that they lose site of the end goal. The end goal is to sell more products, get more leads, or grow the web site revenue stream. However, when these web site owners begin the process of search engine optimization, they focus on getting higher rankings in the search engines, so they can get more traffic… and that’s where it usually ends.

Many times, the web site owner sees all of the traffic they get to their web site, and end up scratching their heads because they haven’t made any additional sales, or picked up new clients. The reason for this is the Internet strategy equation was never completed. Other factors need to be taken into account in order for the SEO and SEM to make a difference in the bottom line. Some of the issues with not getting new sales and leads include:

- The traffic sent to your web site wasn’t motivated to take an action at that time.
- The traffic is motivated, but the web site isn’t set up in a way that will encourage the action you desire them to take.

This can be due to:

o The page the SEO/SEM traffic is landing on doesn’t maintain continuity from the ad, or referral link. (many times, all of the traffic is sent to the home page, and that page is usually generic and not product or service specific.
o The copy on the web page just doesn’t inspire the visitors to take action. There is nothing there connecting the visitor to what you do, or what you are providing them.

Driving traffic to the web site is only part of the picture. A whole strategy needs to be developed in order to fully take advantage of the increase in traffic, or you are just wasting your money and resources. You need to look at the sequence that your visitors experience as they land on your website from a search engine, or and continue to go through your web site. Does the sequence make sense? Does each step build upon the last? If the momentum is being dropped anywhere along the way, you have increased your chances of losing your visitor. A proper Internet Development Strategy is needed to grow your web site business for the long term.
