Step 1: Decide What Products or Services Your Small Business will Offer

The first of the steps to starting a small business is to carefully consider these questions:

What do you have to offer?
What makes you an expert?
Do you have all of the education and skills you'll need to compete successfully in the marketplace or will you need to do some brushing up or retraining first?
Does the product or service meet a need?
Is this a seasonal product or service, or can you market it all year long?
How sensitive is marketing this product or service to general economic conditions? When the economy is weak, how do you think your business will be affected?
Will you be energized by going through the steps to starting this particular small business - is it something you'll love to do or sell - or are you just going through the motions of starting a small business to try to make some money?

The saying, "Do what you love, love what you do" should not be taken lightly. Your business is going to be your livelihood - you should have a good time doing it. If not, it will be difficult to get motivated at times.
If you are excited about your business, your customers will notice and it will be easier to get them excited, too. Plus, completing the steps to starting your small business will be fun and much more enjoyable.

Step 2: Know Your Market and Your Competition

When you are starting a small or home business, understanding small business marketing concepts, like getting a handle on the potential market for what you small business will have to offer and the value proposition of your small business is very important. Here are a few things to consider:

Who is going to buy your product or service?
Will you market to businesses, to consumers, or to both?
What traits do you think your "typical" customer or client will have?
Is the need for your product or service not currently being met or is it already saturated?
Is there something about what you have to offer that will allow you to beat your competitors?
How will you differentiate yourself from your competition?
What is your value proposition? What is your competitive advantage?

Step 3: Make Sure You Can Do the Tasks Needed Before Starting a Small Business

Before starting a small business, you need to understand and carefully consider that you'll have a lot of daily tasks that will need to get done. If you can't do them, who will? If there's no one to take care of these tasks properly, is it worth starting a small business?
Answer this question honestly. Can you handle the day-to-day general tasks that starting a small business requires, like:

setting appointments
ordering supplies
bookkeeping
marketing
filing
answering the phone
checking and replying to e-mail

If you'll have help, great. If you can afford to pay someone else to do some of these tasks for you, all the better. But a great majority of home businesses are a one-person operation starting on a shoestring budget, and most other small business are not much larger and don't have substantial budgets to hire help. That means there's a good chance you'll have to do everything or it just won't get done.
You'll want to think twice about starting a small business if you are going to be run rugged with the mundane tasks to the point that you won't have adequate time to do the things you love that will make you money.

Step 4: Make a List of What Needs to be Done to Prepare Your Home for Business

With the product or service you have in mind, can you handle the business from your home the way it is right now? If not, what do you need to do to get it ready?

Will you need space for inventory, supplies, records and/or equipment?
Do you already have an area you can use for your office or will you need to bargain with another member of the family to give up some space?
Is the nature of your inventory or equipment such that special climate needs must be accommodated?
Do you need to add a room, enclose a patio, convert a garage or basement, or stake out the attic?
What kind of power needs will you have and will you have to make any alterations to accommodate them?

As you determine what you'll need, keep track of your estimate costs because you'll need them later in this exercise.

Step 6: Review Your Small Business Insurance Needs

When you go into business, you'll potentially be exposing yourself, your home and your family to a variety of risks. You need to think about how you'll manage those risks and find out if you need small business insurance to help handle them before it's too late.
Consider this:

Will you need health insurance? If so, how can you get it and how much is it going to cost? When one spouse is still working, the ideal situation may be to get the other included on the working spouse's health insurance coverage if you can. If not, either the cost or the lack of availability, or both may prevent you from starting your business. More on health insurance...
If you're carrying inventory, need equipment or are storing hazardous materials what kind of property insurance will you need to avoid suffering financial hardship? Will you need a small business insurance policy for this purpose and how much will it cost?
Will you need liability insurance? Where can you get liability coverage under a small business insurance policy and how much is it going to cost? Will you need errors and omissions coverage?
What about your auto insurance? Will you be using your car for business?

Remember, your homeowners' and auto insurance policies weren't designed to cover your small or home business. Your best bet is to shop for small business insurance that can help you manage your exposure to loss, so do your small business insurance and health insurance shopping ahead of time to save aggravation and surprises later.
Small business insurance can be a major expense of doing business, but some coverages like General Liability may be quite reasonable depending on the nature of your business.
Record any small business insurance cost estimates for this step - you'll need them to determine your startup and operating costs.

Step 7: Learn the Risks and Benefits of the Legal Forms of Business Organization

Before you start a small or home business is the time to understand the various legal forms of business organization. Will you operate your business as a sole proprietorship, a limited liability company (LLC), an S corporation, a partnership, or a full blown C corporation?
You'll want to research issues surrounding the legal form of business organization carefully now, because your decision will affect your startup costs. It will also affect your tax situation and your personal liability for the actions and debts of the business. Take advantage of the IRS for free tax information on the various legal forms of business organization.
Finally, your decision on which legal form of business organization you will use will largely determine what steps you need to take in order to set up your business when you're ready to do so.

Step 8: Determine Your Startup Costs

Calculate your startup costs - the amount of money it's going to take to get up and running. At this point, many of your items are going to be nothing more than estimates, but do the best you can. By completing the previous steps you should have a much clearer picture of your startup costs than before you started this exercise. Here are some additional questions that may help you not to overlook something:

Will you need to hire specialists, like a lawyer or an accountant?
Will you need to buy some office furniture or equipment?
What supplies will you need on hand for Day One? Do you need to purchase a beginning inventory?
Are you going to buy a business or franchise?
Will you have construction costs, and if so, how much needs to be done by professionals and how much can you do yourself?
What can you do to lower your costs?

Take your time with this step. Do some price checking and look for legitimate bargains. You're bound to think of things and adjust your estimates all the way up to your opening day.
The closer you get to opening day, the more accurate your estimate will be.

Step 9: Consider Your Break Even Point, Your Cash Flow and Your Funding Options

There are several issues questions you need to consider with this step:

How much will you need to pay your bills until the money starts coming in from your home business?
Will you be keeping your full-time job or is there another breadwinner in the family that can help you until you develop an income stream?
What will your continuing outlays be for items like equipment, salaries and/or inventory?
How many products must you sell or how many hours of service will you need to provide before you reach the break even point?
Where will the money come from? Will you need to borrow or draw down a savings account or sell some investments and/or assets?
Will you need a silent partner to help provide working capital, especially until you reach your break even point and being making a profit?
Are you willing to use your home equity to finance your business?
Have you checked into SBA loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration?
Is there any possibility of getting a grant to start your business?

Knowing these answers will help you decide if you can act now. If not, it can also help you to plan to secure the money you need and help you set a target startup date.

Step 10: Gauge Your Family's Support for Your Home Business

Hopefully you won't leave this step for last, but doing so won't diminish its importance.
Members of your family, at least those still at home or any family members who may need to make sacrifices or lifestyle changes in order to accommodate your business, need to know what you're up to and how it might affect them. If you have a spouse or significant other or children living with you, your home business will be a big part of their lives too.
Communication is key to helping them understand. Ask for their support – you'll find that's much more effective than demanding it. Try to understand where they're coming from. If they have questions, issues, or objections, discuss them openly. Caring and open discussions now help you avoid problems later.
Couples who plan to operate a business together need to have a pretty good idea in advance if that will work for them. It's a good idea to discuss who will be responsible for specific tasks. If you can't agree on this now, there's a very strong likelihood you won't agree on it later.
Don't let your business damage your family relationships. We all need an occasional getaway and we all need to keep our priorites straight.

As more and more people start or consider starting their own business, it is important that they understand the core steps that are required to launch successful ventures. These steps include spotting, assessing, selecting and executing upon opportunities.

Spotting Opportunities:
The first step to entrepreneurship is identifying opportunities. The entrepreneur must be able to spot an unmet need. Oftentimes this need is seen through an inefficiency in the market - something that doesn't work quite the way the entrepreneur would like it to. As a result, the entrepreneur figures out a potential solution and the opportunity is born.

Assessing Opportunities:
Many entrepreneurs keep a journal that details the myriad of opportunities they come across each day. While it takes a creative skill set to identify opportunities, it takes an analytical skill set to assess them. Each opportunity should be assessed to, among others, determine its likelihood of success and the financial and human resources required to execute upon it.

Selecting Opportunities:
One of the biggest risks in selecting the wrong opportunity is opportunity cost; that is, the cost of having to forego another opportunity that may have been wildly successful. Entrepreneurs should assess their potential opportunities and come to a firm decision regarding which one to execute upon. Once selected, the entrepreneurs cannot second-guess themselves. To do so would lessen their focus and drive towards the selected opportunity, both of which are critical in achieving success.

Executing Upon Opportunities:
Execution, or the ability to generate the most value out of an opportunity, requires a unique combination of creativity, passion, persistence, focus, responsibility, intelligence, planning and energy. The entrepreneur needs to know what tasks must be accomplished and be the main driver in seeing that these tasks are completed in an appropriate manner. Having an expertly written business plan will allow the entrepreneur to see the outline of the actions that must been taken to ensure success.

Understanding the four steps to entrepreneurship enables entrepreneurs to better understand the path that they are embarking upon. It is a path filled with potential pitfalls, but also filled with tremendous excitement, satisfaction and potential to build enormous value.

Why Become an Entrepreneur?

What leads a person to strike out on his own and start a business? Perhaps a person has been laid off once or more. Sometimes a person is frustrated with his or her current job and doesn't see any better career prospects on the horizon. Sometimes a person realizes that his or her job is in jeopardy. A firm may be contemplating cutbacks that could end a job or limit career or salary prospects. Perhaps a person already has been passed over for promotion. Perhaps a person sees no opportunities in existing businesses for someone with his or her interests and skills.

Some people are actually repulsed by the idea of working for someone else. They object to a system where reward is often based on seniority rather than accomplishment, or where they have to conform to a corporate culture.

Other people decide to become entrepreneurs because they are disillusioned by the bureaucracy or politics involved in getting ahead in an established business or profession. Some are tired of trying to promote a product, service, or way of doing business that is outside the mainstream operations of a large company.

In contrast, some people are attracted to entrepreneurship by the advantages of starting a business. These include:

• Entrepreneurs are their own bosses. They make the decisions. They choose whom to do business with and what work they will do. They decide what hours to work, as well as what to pay and whether to take vacations.

• Entrepreneurship offers a greater possibility of achieving significant financial rewards than working for someone else.

• It provides the ability to be involved in the total operation of the business, from concept to design and creation, from sales to business operations and customer response.

• It offers the prestige of being the person in charge.

• It gives an individual the opportunity to build equity, which can be kept, sold, or passed on to the next generation.

• Entrepreneurship creates an opportunity for a person to make a contribution. Most new entrepreneurs help the local economy. A few – through their innovations – contribute to society as a whole. One example is entrepreneur Steve Jobs, who co-founded Apple in 1976, and ignited the subsequent revolution in desktop computers.

Some people evaluate the possibilities for jobs and careers where they live and make a conscious decision to pursue entrepreneurship.

No one reason is more valid than another; none guarantee success. However, a strong desire to start a business, combined with a good idea, careful planning, and hard work, can lead to a very engaging and profitable endeavor.

One Industry Solves its Healthcare Crisis--Will Yours?

With national healthcare reform a done deal, it's interesting to see how some industries are moving to solve the problem now instead of waiting until 2014. Last week, the restaurant industry made its bold move--the National Restaurant Association announced a partnership with United Health Group that will allow independent, small-restaurant owners to offer their workers affordable health insurance.

Obviously, we'll have to wait and see if restaurant owners bite on this offer. But 13 million people in the industry currently have no coverage, and the Restaurant Health Care Alliance, as the initiative has been dubbed, could ensure as many as six million of them, Nation's Restaurant News reports. It could be a game-changer for the whole restaurant industry, vaulting it out of the ranks of industries with the lowest rates of insured workers offering this benefit.
If the plan works for owners and they sign on, it could change the whole reputation of the industry and raise its cachet. One of the reasons it's generally considered a low-rent place to work is the lack of benefits.

We don't have a lot of details yet, but from what we've seen so far, owners may like the proposal. The plan appears to put most of the cost onto the workers, who could buy health insurance through the NRA plan for as little as $100 a month. No word on what, if anything, the employer would pay.

NPR reported employers could get further discounts on some United plans. It's not universal coverage--United Healthcare can still decline coverage to workers with pre-existing conditions, so it remains to be seen how many workers might gain coverage through the plan. So that limits United's risk in offering the plan.

The idea is to get out in front of healthcare reform with an option that the NRA thinks will be cheaper for owners and help them avoid any penalties for not providing healthcare. You may recall that the restaurant industry fought and lost a battle to have part-time workers excluded from headcounts that decide if you have enough workers to be required to provide healthcare. Instead, they were included in a two-to-one formula--two part-timers equal one full-timer. That means many restaurants will be required to offer it by 2014.

Hopefully, we'll see more creativity by groups in other industries to help their business-owner members solve the healthcare puzzle. Nice to see NRA at least make a stab at getting ahead of this problem. I'll be interested to see what restaurateurs' reaction is to the plan.

Motivating Gen X, Gen Y Workers

A primer on how to get the most out of younger employees

Traditional approaches to motivating employees have hit a snag; they don't seem to apply to the contemporary generation of employees, called Generation X and Generation Y (or Millenials).

Who Are the Generation Xers?Most writers agree that these approximately 50 million people were born between the mid 1960s and 1980--the offspring of the famous baby boomers. Many grew up as "latch key" kids, home alone after school while both of their parents worked, and/or they were raised by a single parent.

They saw their parents married to the workplace, often devoting long hours to factories, the office or on the road. Their parents sacrificed time at home with their families. In the economic downturn of the 1980s, many of these hard workers lost their jobs.

The result? The Gen X or Y kids learned to become more pragmatic and were often disillusioned with the lack of work/life balance in their home. In addition, they often looked askance at the lack of loyalty by employers to their employees.

Motivating Gen XersSo how does this information translate into working with and motivating this group of employees? Smart employers will need to recognize those characteristics mentioned above and provide some of the following:

Room to grow. Offer Gen X employees clear statements of goals, but allow them reasonable latitude on how to achieve those goals. Build on their interest in gaining new skills and knowledge by providing opportunities to grow on the job. Gen Xers tend to have a "work hard, play hard" mentality.
Opportunities to make choices. Since this generation has become accustomed to "fending for themselves," provide options--options for task selection, options for challenges, options to formulate new processes, and options to develop creative yet appropriate conclusions. You also want to allow them the freedom to use their own resourcefulness and creativity to achieve success.
Mentoring. Strong, relationship-oriented mentorships are a great value for young employees. Be careful not to micro-manage them or suggest rigid guidelines for completing projects. Spend time with them and offer clear and frequent feedback on their progress.

Who Are the Generation Yers or Millenials?
The approximately 70 million Gen Yers came next, born in the mid to late 1970s through the late 1990s. They have often been called the "Trophy Kids" because on sports teams and in school, each child, regardless of capability, when provided a chance to contribute and perform, was often given some kind of a certificate or award just for having participated. (Recall, in contrast, how previous generations received credit only when they won.)

These kids were praised lavishly by their parents and teachers, who had high levels of hope and expectations for positive outcomes. Often Gen Yers were involved in many activities concurrently with school: lessons, sports, social events, playgroups and teams. They can also be thought of as the "over-scheduled" generation.
Motivating Gen YersThere is a direct relationship between their experiences growing up and methods to motivate this group of Gen Y employees. To attain success with this population, you should consider these approaches:

Multitasking. Provide more than one task to accomplish at a time, but without overwhelming them. They are accustomed to multitasking and can most likely sort out what has to be done and when. What's more, they look forward to the challenges of having several tasks to perform at once.
Collaboration. Create work teams or partners to work with, where appropriate. They are accustomed to working in tandem with others.
Structure. Provide structure and clear guidelines, and at times, specific processes or approaches for achieving goals. While they appear confident, they still need input from management.
Technology. Encourage and allow them to use the latest technology in the work setting.
Challenges. Positively challenge their interests, abilities and achievements.
Relationship building. Create a bonding relationship with them so that they feel comfortable asking for input and direction and know they can rely on you as the authority figure when the need arises.
Positive reinforcement. Reward them frequently with positive feedback and citations for successful accomplishments and milestones on the road to longer-term achievements.
Engaged leadership. Set up specific and regular times to meet with and supervise them. Demonstrate your sincere interest in their professional growth and success.
Communication. Understand that they prefer using electronic means to communicate with you as opposed to face-to-face meetings. This generation is far more fluent and comfortable with technology than any other group.

As the economy continues along its unsteady path, many small-business owners have been asking me what they can do to keep their businesses financially healthy over the coming months.

I recommend you start by leveraging the tools you already have, and making sure you're using them as efficiently and effectively as possible.

Take your e-mail marketing, for instance. When you stay in touch with your regular customers and subscribers--and send them valuable information--they'll view you as a credible resource, an expert in your field, and most important, someone who's watching out for their best interests.

And they'll reward you with their loyalty (and continued purchases).

But first you have to get those e-mails opened.

With floods of e-mail arriving every hour, most people are ruthless about deleting anything they even suspect won't interest them. Not only that, they're also just as likely to report unwanted e-mails as spam as they are to delete them. So if you're not writing compelling subject lines that get the e-mails opened, all your hard work is lost.

Here are five tips for writing effective e-mail subject lines that can easily double the open (and click-through) rates on your next e-mail.

Tip #1: Use personalization for added attentionSending out an e-mail with a personalized subject line is the equivalent of calling someone's name in a crowd: It has that same power to grab his attention.

By now, using the recipient's name in your subject line is pretty standard. But that's only the start. You can take personalization further by adding another personal detail to the subject line, like the city your customers live in.

Start with a subject line that looks like this: "Janet, want to get out of the city this weekend?"

Then make it really compelling by adding personal details: "Janet, want to get out of Tucson this weekend?"

A DoubleClick survey found that the most important factor in generating a response was offering a product the recipients wanted at the time. You can accomplish that by segmenting your market, allowing you to personalize the offers or the information in your e-mails to make them timely and relevant.

That means collecting as much data as possible on each person on your mailing list. Then you can create separate campaigns that will appeal to each segment of your audience (e.g., subscribers; people who have purchased once; and people who have purchased more than once).

If your offer is highly personalized, your subject lines can be, too.

And the great thing is that there are plenty of tools out there that can manage and merge in your data to create targeted e-mail campaigns.

Tip #2: Keep your subject lines shortHere's a test: Take a look at the subject lines in your inbox. Are there any that stand out more than others? Any that you read first or get you interested in learning more? Chances are it's the shorter subject lines that grab you, right?

It's actually been proven that subject lines with 41 characters or under get higher opening and click-through rates than longer ones. So keep it short and sweet. You don't need to explain in detail what the e-mail is about in the subject line; you just need to give enough information to make people want to open the e-mail to read more. E-mails alerting recipients to a regular subscription product or downloadable information can be longer--test and see what works.

Make sure you put your benefit, offer or most important element in the first few words of the subject line, too. That way, if someone's e-mail program cuts off the end of the subject line (which is pretty common) you'll still get your main point across.

Tip #3: Keep the formatting simple and understated
If you sent an e-mail to a friend, would you type your subject line like this?

"Free Beer And Pizza -- You're Invited!!"

Or how about like this?

"FREE BEER AND PIZZA -- YOU'RE INVITED!!"

It's pretty unlikely, right? So why would your e-mails to your customers and subscribers have subject lines that were formatted like that?

The more your subject lines look like personal e-mails from friends, family members or business associates, the more likely it is that they'll be opened. The more they look like a hard-sell sales pitch, the less effective they'll be.

So avoid capitalization, exclamation marks and dollar signs, which can increase the chances of having your messages flagged as spam, and will be sure to set off warning bells with your recipients.

Tip #4: Use a compelling angle to get your readers interested
Of course, getting your readers to open your e-mails requires more than personalization and formatting. You'll still need to come up with an interesting angle that grabs your customers' attention and makes them want to open the e-mail.

Here are some ideas for subject lines that we've had success with in the past:

Make an announcement or share news: People want to be the first to find out new things, especially if your site covers a specific industry.
Make your reader curious: Suggest that the reader is missing out on an important offer or piece of information. When you use this technique, make sure you leave something to the imagination. For example: "Paul, are you making this common mistake?"
Create a sense of urgency: Consider creating a sense of urgency in your subject line by limiting time ("Frank, only three days left") or quantity ("Mary, only 250 copies available").
Emphasize benefits: Another powerful approach for your subject line is to state how your readers will benefit from your e-mail. If you can tell them how they're going to save money, save time, make their lives easier, etc., by opening and reading your message, you'll have the most success.

Tip #5: Make sure your subject line relates to the content of the e-mail
Nobody likes to be fooled or tricked, so make sure your subject line is related to your actual message--in fact, it's a legal requirement under the CAN-SPAM Act that the subject line be authentic and not misleading.

If your subject line says "Mary, three ways to save money," you need to make sure you actually are talking about that, and preferably within the first few lines. Otherwise, your visitors will feel cheated, and that will hurt your credibility.

And don't forget about the preview pane. Statistics from MarketingSherpa show that 26.6 percent of consumers read e-mails that way. And 69 percent of people reading e-mail at work do so with the preview pane turned on. You risk losing those readers if you don't follow up your subject line almost immediately in the body of the e-mail.

Are you willing and want to jump in the business world, now or later? The answer must be willing and wants. It seems the answer was enough to force you to start thinking about these phenomena.

If you are working on others, it is good if you are considering to continue his career to the top. But as a worker, you also must be retired.

Smooth Lander
They are the professionals who continue to hone his abilities, while developing career to pursue his full height. They are waiting for a golden opportunity where investors want to give them a chance to run a business.

If you've got a job working for someone else, and want to keep that job, here are ten essential techniques which you absolutely must follow in order to keep your job today:

1. Don't Excel
If you excel at your job, you'll get noticed. Your co-workers will notice that you are doing well and start talking to the boss about it. They'll gang up on you to try and take you down. They'll look for some evidence which poses you in some negative light, and use it as an excuse to get rid of you. Any excuse works in this climate. So don't excel. Excellence makes you different, and "difference" is a negative. Don't be different.

2. Don't Do Poorly
Don't let yourself slack off in any way either. They will use any excuse in a change in your job habits in order to red circle your position. Don't give them any kind of excuse. However, make sure that you also always follow rule one: don't do any more or less that what is expected of you, if you do you'll stick out, and that's the last thing you need right now. Keep on steaming at that exact same clip; don't vary your speed in any way.

3. Don't Complain
This is a sure job buster. Management is strung tight: stress is at an all time high. Money is barely trickling in, if at all. Now is not the time to complain. Bottle it all up, and never say a SINGLE word to anyone at work, or anyone who knows anyone at work, no matter how unfair or wrong things are. Management doesn't want to hear problems OR solutions. They'd like to hear NOTHING. Nothing is king. Silence is queen. They do like to hear keys busily tapping though.
WARNING: Don't be fooled by an "open door policy" or your boss asking you "How Are Things?" or "What's wrong". Always respond to the former with "Fantastic" and never, never respond to the latter with anything other than "Nothing! Everything's just great". In fact, don't ever give him the reason to say "What's wrong": see point 7

4. Use the mantra "I'm just happy to have a job"
Every day, when you get up, in the shower, while you're shaving, on your way to work, just repeat, again and again. "I'm just happy to have a job, I'm just happy to be working". When your boss cuts your salary, just say "That's OK, I'm just happy to be working". When your boss gives that hot sales lead to another sales rep, just say to yourself "It's OK, because I still have a job". When your boss ask you to work the weekend, just say "No problem", and think to yourself. "I'm just happy to have a job." When your boss goes to Hawaii but you have to stay behind and work, remember the mantra.

5. Take a salary cut gracefully when offered
If your boss cuts your salary in order to keep the company afloat (or for his new minivan purchase) just smile and say "I know that its all for the good of the company, that's fine, we'll just get by with less". Even better, offer to take a salary cut, if you know that the company is in trouble.

6. Get politically neutral
Always good advice, but even more so now. If you ally yourself with the wrong crowd, you could be in trouble. If you ally yourself too closely with your boss, you could be in trouble if he goes. At worst it's neutral, but never for long. Never, ever let down your work mask while you are at work, or while you are in the company of anyone from work, or anyone who knows anyone at work. Smile, be happy, and never give anyone a reason to say "What's Wrong". That, my friend, is the beginning of the end. You may as well get your resume out.

8. Work longer hours
You may think that this point conflicts with point 1, but its how you do it, not what you do. Make sure that you actually spend more time working, but not do more work. This may sound confusing but it's actually quite simple. Your boss doesn't usually care how much you produce, but they do care when you come in and when you leave (sometimes, they are simple creatures). Always, always come in before the boss and leave after. If you do leave before the boss, make sure that you send email to "the team" but copying your boss at 1am (or even better) 2:00 a.m. in the morning, so that he gets the impression that you are hard at work, even at 2:00 a.m. Even though you're really only working hard at keeping your job, 2:00 a.m. emails are still pretty damn impressive to the boss.

9. Sacrifice everything for your job.
Now is the time to stay at work long hours, keep your head down and shut up. Don't miss your wife, don't miss your kids. Don't miss the karate lessons, soccer games and Little League games. What you are doing is way more important than that right now. You are focused on keeping your job. That is all that matters. 10. Be a work-bot

A is for Alligator Farm. Why should Aunt Annie have all the fun? There are thousands of cowboys in Utah needing alligator boots, and no gatorculture in a 2000 mile radius. A great opportunity for someone who likes to work with state government. After all, if the state can stock Strawberry Reservoir with salmon, why can't you stock Utah Lake with lizards? And harvesting would be just about as easy as trolling with a poodle!
B is for banker. There is a pervasive myth that bankers can only say "no." In reality bankers are an important part of the entrepreneur's world and often say "yes." A simple experiment will prove the myth a lie. Just go in to your local loan officer and ask him if he thinks raising alligators in Utah Lake is loony. If he is too shy to say "yes" you will still be able to clearly read the "yes" behind his big friendly smile.

B is for Best Practices. In a business plan Best Practices means what you are doing now. Implementing Best Practices means you are going to write down what you are doing now and put it in a binder labeled Best Practices. Worst practices consist of taking another company's binder and applying it to your company.
B is for BS, short for business semantics.
C is for consultant. If you can use sizzle, buzz and paradigm in the same sentence you are probably a consultant. If you can fit them into an executive summary without blushing you have probably done this in a previous incarnation. It is so easy to make fun of consultants that even Dogbert became one, but consultants are as important as bankers in the entrepreneur's tool box. After all it was a consultant that introduced Eve to a new paradigm by encouraging her to think outside the box.
C is for Corporate Ladder. Why climb someone else's corporate ladder when as an entrepreneur you could start at the top? The reason that there is so much kicking, spitting, and gouging happening on the corporate ladder is that you can have all that fun without moving outside your comfort zone. And corporate infighting may be your most valuable talent.
D is for dot com. Thousands of dot com startups soon learned that bricks and mortars are dangerous weapons.
E is for e. As in e-commerce, e-banking, and e-coli. The e in e-commerce is supposed to stand for electronic, but really stands for empty-headed (try it, it works). At one point in time adding an e to any word was a sign of class like e-commerce and Towne Center. Now it just shows you don't know how to spell.
E is for execution. Venture capitalists insist that the plan be executed or the founder be executed, or preferably both.
F is for freedom. One of the great appeals to owning your own business is the freedom to work your own hours. This is in fact true. You can work any 100 hours a week as long as 40 of them are M-F 8-5.
F is for Full Disclosure. Politicians need to show that they are not unduly influenced by outside influences. This process involves filling out a form which lists any bimbos, diseases, hit contracts, or unregistered body parts that couldn't otherwise be covered up.
G is for garage, one of the best assets an entrepreneur can have. You can use it to start an electronics company, grow earthworms, or store 10,000 unsold pet rocks.
H is for H-Bomb, which is what the Federal Government invented to cause chaos and devastation. Soon afterwards they came up with the Environmental Protection Agency, which is so much more effective that they have given up on H-bombs.
H is also for half, which is an important part of the lingo of bankers and venture capitalists, as in half-baked, half-cocked, half-assed, half-truth, half wit, halfhearted, and halfway house. An important bill collection technique for entrepreneurs is the half-nelson.
I is for intrapreneurial. Corporations have long noticed how entrepreneurs are much better at getting things done, so they postulated that if they got the entrepreneurial spirit going in their corporations things would get done. So they took a prefix from the Latin meaning within, and added it to the Old French word for undertake and produced a word meaning "do-it-yourself undertaker." Intrapreneurs have the bureaucracy of the Roman Empire and the fire and drive of the French. Intrapreneurs learned that they got ahead quicker with intraoffice politics than they could by actually developing products. After all the reason that small companies work is empowerment and risk. The managers didn't want to empower anybody, and the workers weren't interested in risk.
I is for inhalation therapy. Useful for the entrepreneur afflicted with hyperbole-induced asthma and when hyperventilating at investors conferences.
I is for IP, or intellectual property. Intellectual property is the property that you think you have before the lawyers work you over. Often all the assets a company has is intellectual property, since it rents the building, furniture and computers. Since this asset can be rendered useless and unsalvageable if the company fails, IP is also for instant poverty.
J is for jalapeno. If you are looking for business ideas, what could be hotter than hot sauce? The problem with hot sauce is coming up with a good name. "Sudden Death" is already taken, so where could you go from there? Pets! It is known that birds are immune to peppers, but mammals aren't, so maybe a Tabasco-spiked bird feed to keep squirrels out of your bird feeder. Or pepper spray for tents to keep chipmunks from chewing a hole in your North Face. Have you heard about the man who bought a pit bull and in no time had him eating out of his leg? Maybe that will give you some ideas. . .
J is for just-in-time (JIT). During the high prime-rate days of the 1980s companies discovered this method to cut costs by not holding manufacturing inventory. Since interest rates have dropped it no longer makes sense, but like all management placebos it persists like mildew in the shower. Since the real cost of JIT is not being able to ship due to unpredictable problems in the supply chain it has been renamed to JITTGB, or "just in time to go broke."
K is for kissing booth. An oft-used source of high-risk capital.
L is for lateral thinking. Joe had great success with lateral thinking, but it had a painful side effect-- walking into door jams.
L is for limited partnership. Limited partnerships limit the risk of the partners. This is the form of partnership wherein partners are limited to settling their differences to with fists and teeth. This limits the risk of the partners to charges of assault and battery rather than attempted murder.
L is for Loop, if you are always well informed about matters necessary for the performance of your job you are "in the loop," otherwise you are a human being. Taxes have loopholes, so do nooses.
L is for Liquidity. You know you have achieved liquidity if all your assets can be poured down the toilet.
L is for Lost Opportunity Costs, another term for alimony.
M is for Mom. An entrepreneur can have no greater asset than an Angel mother.
M is for Makeover. Say you have a nice company, making steady money designing and producing widgets, and yet for some reason you are getting no respect from the stock market. Companies that have never made a cent are shooting to the stratosphere while your well-run company is left doing swirlies in the porcelain hydrosphere.
What you need is a makeover. Widgets were hot stuff in the 30's, but now they are boring. Hire yourself a new CEO with experience in makeovers. He will call a press conference announcing that the company is launching out into new fields, dropping a couple of buzz words like nanocommunications and biotribology.
Your stock value shoots up, and everybody is jazzed, except your management team who just saw the corporate ladder move to a new wall, the sales department who have built careers around selling widgets, your engineering department who perceive that their already meager R&D budgets are going to be cut completely, and your manufacturing line who get the message that their specialized skill no longer figure in the company's future.
So as your stock value soars as your morale, productivity and sales plummet. As soon as the stock value triggers the new CEO's bonus he heads for greener pastures, having another success on his resume. Did the remaining management team tank the company after he left? Well, he can hardly be blamed for that!
M is for Marketing. This is the section of the business plan where you show how to get the entire management team to Mazatlan without their spouses.
M is for Marketing research. This is what the dart board in the conference room is expensed as.
N is for Napkin--use it to write your business plan over breakfast. and hope it is big enough to clean up the orange juice spewed out by the venture capitalist sitting across the table from you. See "Spit-take."
N is for Negotiate. You can negotiate with a terrorist, you can negotiate with the bank, you can even negotiate with a judge, but you can't negotiate with a screaming two year old.
N is for Net, this is a prefix used with terms like net asset value, net book value, net cash balance, net worth, and net income. In the modern world this prefix has been replaced with the more useful prefix "not."
O is for organizational behavior. This is the class in business school where you learn why it is more fun to be a professor than a student.
O is for OWC, or "owner will carry." This indicates a last-ditch effort of an entrepreneur to sell his business. The normal response to this is to buy the company with nothing down, change its name, sell off the assets and then let him repossess. This is also known as a "turn around."
O is for Outsourcing. In order to avoid the pain of actually doing something you can pay someone else to do it for you. I am just about to close a deal to outsource accountability, responsibility, and blame.
O is for Over-the-Counter. This term applies to either drugs that are stocked at the market or stocks that are a drug on the market.
P is for Payroll. Most people look forward to payday, but if just the thought of payday sends you into a panic, you are probably an entrepreneur.
P is for Paper profits. These are profits that you can't spend, but you have to work like crazy if you want to avoid paying taxes on.
P is for Paradigm. You take the first dollar your company earned and mount it on the wall. When you have to take it down to pay a postage-due of eighty cents, what you have left is a paradigms.
Q is for Quarterly Report. This makes sure your venture investors have a stick to beat you up with every three months.
Q is for Quick Ratio. This ratio is calculated by dividing the amount of stock options a manager has vested by of time it takes him to flee.
R is for RSP, or reverse stock split. A stock split happens when the per-share price is so high no one can afford it. A reverse stock split happens when the stock exchange picks up a sword and offers to apply the wisdom of Solomon unless you do something about your low stock price.
R is for Rocket Science. Everybody knows that rocket science is hard. What they don't know is that as hard as it is to build a successful rocket, it is much harder to raise the money to build the rocket. So rocket scientists do always make the best entrepreneurs.
R is for Roll Up. When you spend so much time at your desk trying to grow your business that your fat moves to the middle, you have a roll up.
R is for ROI or Return on Investment. When you get a letter back marked "undeliverable," and it contains an invoice, and the postoffice didn't charge you for sending it back, that is called a return on investment.
S is for silicon. And also for silicone. Silicon is the stuff computer chips are made of. Silicone is the stuff breast implants are made of. The news media have never been able to keep this straight. This means that thousands of female journalists are still looking on the map for Silicone Valley, when it could have been right under their noses the whole time.
S is for Sole Proprietorship. A partnership where you have to fight with yourself.
S is for Supply Chain. Everybody uses suppliers. And those suppliers use suppliers, just like the poem "bigger fleas have little fleas upon their backs to bite'em. And little fleas have lesser fleas and so ad infinitum." The wonder of the modern world is how anyone gets paid. Each supplier in the supply chain gets paid in 30 days if every other supplier in the chain gets paid in 30 days, which is why there are such horrible curses called down on anyone who would break the chain.
S is for Solutions. This is a word that used to have a meaning. If a company calls itself a solutions company what does this mean? Chemical companies make solutions, but they call their solutions by a real name like "window washing fluid" which lets the customer know exactly what it does.
The other kind of solution is the answer to a problem. But that doesn't usually fit either. For example, I get calls offering me "enterprise solutions."
I run an enterprise, and I have problems, a lot of problems. So I say "Great, I need enterprise solutions. My secretary is out sick, can you come and answer the phone?"
"No, you misunderstand we are in information technology."
"OK, I have a big problem with my engineering team who spend so much time staring at the screen they don't have time to do any research and development."
"No you misunderstand , we sell sales solutions."
"OK, now we are talking. My sales manager is sobbing in the toilet and won't come out."
"On the other hand, maybe we don't have any solutions for you--click."
The moral to the story is to tell people what you do, after all, every company ever founded from the beginning of the world until now could describe itself as a solutions company, but they usually came up with something more descriptive.
T is for TLA. This is a three letter acronym meaning "three letter acronym." There are 17,576 possible three letter acronyms in English, every one of which has an already registered domain name, so I am sorry, but from now on you will have to be more creative when you name your company!
T is for tough. An entrepreneur needs to be tough, but tough cuts both ways. Remember when "Chainsaw" Al Dunlop took over Sunbeam? Wow, was he tough! When the smoke cleared Chainsaw Al had to pay a $500,000 fine and promise that he would never again work for a public company. That's tough!
U is for Utah Angels. A thirteen year old girl is a wonderful human being. A gaggle of ten thirteen year old girls is a powerful destructive force, sparing nothing in its path. The Utah Angels have taken this principle and applied it to angel capital.
V is for view. As in the Escalante National Monument, which brings up the question, how many million dollar views will you give in exchange for $300,000,000,000 worth of coal?
W is for WWW, a term invented by Al Gore during the Clinton administration. Short for Who's With Willie?
X is for Xtreme Sports Camp. Like a basketball camp but with real blood, usually sponsored by emergency rooms and health clinics during the slow season.
Y is for Yam Shakes. This is a medical condition first observed the first time Zuka Juice executives entered a Jamba Juice shop.
Z is for Zero. This is a nice round number which characterizes a lot of entrepreneurial concepts, for example spare cash, free time, and patience with deadbeat customers. I tell my kids "I started out with nothing and I still have most of it left

Experiential Learning

A wise man said: Experience is the best teacher the best. It seems that advice can not be refuted. Humans are tested are those who have undergone and passed a variety of experiences.
Tips were also inspired some experts to apply according to their competence. Then comes what in marketing called experiential marketing, which is a marketing concept which basically gives a unique experience to the customer so that he continues to recall the products offered.
Examples of experiential marketing is when we go to the mall Ambarukmo in Yogyakarta later dropped by the bakery BreadTalk. There, they were not just selling, but also shows how to make it. Kitchen them transparent so that everyone could see manufacturing techniques. We as buyers become like given the experience in making bread. Lightweight Building Product Has Heavy Potential

Five years ago Hartland entrepreneur James Jendusa, owner of Jendusa Design and Engineering, had an idea for a low-cost, energy-efficient framing product for use in construction of residential buildings with in-floor heating systems. Today he markets his innovative building product for not only residential use, but also for floor and wall framing of large commercial buildings through his company, Lightweight Structures LLC.

The Lightweight Structures framing system is a light gage steel and concrete floor decking and wall product that can knock down construction costs by as much as 15%. The system replaces a commonly used process of laying down reinforcing steel and then pouring concrete on form work.

“Typically those floors cost between $20 and $30 per square foot. We install for between $12 and $15 per square foot,” notes Jendusa. “We are able to use our product in those same buildings, except there is no form work needed. This product is delivered to the job site in panels, or we can deliver in pieces and put it together at the job site.”

By eliminating the shoring and reinforcing steel, the typical floor of a high-rise building can be completed in a day versus a week, cutting the time to completion by up to 30%, adds Jendusa.

There are additional cost savings because of reduced weight, which allows for smaller foundations and structural framework. Prepunched openings enable easy installation of electrical, HVAC and plumbing work .
This green building product uses 100% recycled steel, and the decking insulation, which adds energy savings throughout the building, is made of 15% to 90% recycled material. Using the same framing system, Lightweight Structures has also introduced a new super insulated wall panel.

“And the fact that we are able to produce it and fabricate it either right on site or very close to the project reduces the transportation costs tremendously,” says Jendusa.

Since the product can easily be manufactured and installed with low-skill labor, Jendusa hopes to someday see it used in developing countries. "All you need is a screw gun and concrete."

After completing rigorous testing, Jendusa turned to BizStarts Milwaukee, a partner in the Wisconsin Entrepreneurs’ Network (WEN), for advice on the best strategy to market his product. Through the BizStarts mentoring program he met David Linz, WEN southeast regional director.

“Dave actually came out to my office. I showed him the product, and he liked it,” recalls Jendusa. “He has been very helpful in providing resources for me to help launch this company. The first thing he did was recommend that I get a business plan done and enter the Governor’s Business Plan Contest. “

Linz helped Jendusa secure an Early Planning Grant, administered by WEN, to hire a consultant to help write his business plan. Jendusa ultimately earned a spot as a finalist in the 2009 Governors Business Plan Contest.

As more and more developers show interest in his product, Jendusa expects to take on larger projects and eventually expand his business nationally and internationally. Linz continues to assist Jendusa as he seeks investors in order to reach that goal.

After the market meltdown, the real estate bust and the worst recession in a generation, is this a good time to start a business? Minnesota entrepreneur Scott Litman thinks so.
“Recessions are great times to build a business,” he said. Difficult times drive necessity and innovation, and starting a business in a bad economy forces an entrepreneur to bootstrap his or her way in a tough environment, he said. “So you’re ready for it when the market improves.”
Litman, a managing partner at Minneapolis-based marketing firm Magnet 360, is also co-founder of the Minnesota Cup — a statewide contest designed to “find Minnesota’s newest and most innovative business ideas.”
The sixth annual competition was recently announced, inviting Gopher State entrepreneurs and college students to compete for a share of $130,000 in prize money across six divisions: biosciences, high tech, clean technology and renewable energy, social entrepreneurship, general and a student category.
This is only the second year that the Cup has expanded beyond business and student categories, Litman said. Creating the divisions “allows participants to have their business plan reviewed by a professional in their domain and space,” he explained. It’s a benefit he thinks is as valuable as the prize money. “It’s a heck of a reward,” he said.

Competition and entrepreneurship are familiar to Litman. As a student at the University of Minnesota, he placed third in a national business competition sponsored by Apple Computer. As a result, he met business people locally and nationally. He also “gained a bit of a reputation for success at a young age,” which he described as “incredibly important” when he launched his first business a few years out of college.
Inspired by that experience, he and business partner Dan Mallin launched the Minnesota Cup six years ago with initial support from the state of Minnesota and the U of M. The competition has grown steadily and attracted nearly 1,100 entrants last year. In addition to the two initial backers, this year’s event is also sponsored by Wells Fargo and the Arrowhead Growth Alliance.
Litman proudly points to the success of past participants. Even in the midst of the credit squeeze last year, 2009 competition finalists secured more than $8 million in capital financing. A 2005 finalist, HealthSimple, sold its business, which is based on nutritional advice for diabetics, to McNeil Nutritionals, a division of Johnson & Johnson. The 2006 winner, VAST Enterprises, has grown its composite paving brick business by partnering with Shakopee-based building components manufacturer Fabcon.
His biggest concern is not that the economy will discourage sponsors or participants but that individuals will hesitate to enter the competition because they think their ideas are not ready. “Far too many people self-select out ... find reasons not to join,” he said. Whether someone has an early idea, is in the middle of writing a business plan or already in the in the market, he sees advantages to the competition.
“The real advantage of the Minnesota Cup for participants is the experience of the contest itself,” Litman said in a prepared release. “We have built a strong program that connects budding entrepreneurs with the business community. All participants will emerge from the competition stronger than when they began, and those who are among the semi-finalists, finalists and winners are provided the tools and support needed to not only write a business plan, but to take that business plan and turn it into a viable business entity.”
The deadline for online applications is May 21 at www.minnesotacup.org. After a semifinal round of judging, the top three finalists in each division will present their ideas to a panel of executives, investors and entrepreneurs who will choose this year’s division winners. Each division winner will be awarded $20,000 - with the exception of the student division winner, who will receive $5,000.
The winner from each division, including the student division, will then compete for the grand prize of an additional $20,000 on Sept. 9 at the sixth annual Minnesota Cup awards event at the University of Minnesota’s McNamara Alumni Center.
The competition is open to Minnesota residents. Student entrepreneurs submitting their ideas must be between 19 and 25 years old and be enrolled full-time at a Minnesota college or university.

Defining your beliefs and guiding principles is important to running a successful bussiness . If you don’t define your beliefs, others--be it friends, associates or the marketplace--will do it for you.

By taking ownership of your own values and defining what’s important to you, you are setting up a system that will guide you through the rough waters of entrepreneurship.

Early in my career, I created a simple credo (Latin for “I believe”) to define my values as an entrepreneur. This credo has proven to be a powerful and flexible guide over the course of owning and operating more than 30 different kinds of businesses.

The real value in a credo is the act and process of developing one of your own. However, you can use the 14-point outline below as a template for deciding what principles will guide you in running your business .

Be Organized. Organized minds are clear, and clear minds take action towards clear objectives, so get as organized and as clear as possible in your life and business affairs. Start with your desk and work area, then with your plans and actions. Schedule a written plan of your activities and objectives and stick with it the entire day. Do this the night before and you’re ahead of 90 percent of the rest of the population--including your competitors.
Be Dedicated. Every day, do at least one thing you’ve been putting off. As the great Jim Rohn has said: “There are two types of pain you will go through in life--the pain of discipline and the pain of regret.” Each moment you can decide which you’d rather experience. Successful people know that the pain of discipline is the price of their success. Start making it the price of yours.
Be Confident. Feel as good as possible and achieve a sense of well-being by just being quiet and contemplative for 15 minutes every day. Also, find a way to exercise at least 15 minutes every day. Both will boost positive feelings about yourself, which translates into a confidence that is attractive to others--including new customers and clients.
Be Appreciative. Tell your family, friends and business associates how much you appreciate them. Be generous with praise and compliments--and find more things people in your world are doing right, rather than doing wrong.
Be Optimistic. Leave past failures in the past and focus positively on your future. If you are a glass-half-empty person, start seeing the glass as being half-full. Life--and business--is more enjoyable that way.
Get Educated. Read something that improves your mind every day. Keep yourself away from unproductive people, activity and news. Become a master and an expert in your industry, and more business will flow to you over time simply on the basis of your credibility and expertise in your field.
Be Thrifty. Never pay full price. Consume less and never pay more tax than absolutely necessary. Don’t be in business simply for tax reasons, but always recognize that the more resources you pay out to the treasury, the less you will have to put back into your business.
Be Sociable. Be charming and agreeable. Never speak badly of anyone. You never know if your next big client or customer is within earshot of something you have to say. Make it positive, and you’ll never have to worry about negative consequences.
Be Alert. Open yourself to new ideas, experiences and people who can teach you something new--and stay out of ruts and routines. This is one of the best ways to be aware and focused on new opportunities. Remember that some of the greatest product breakthroughs have come from people recognizing the value of interesting and unique innovations.
Be Dependable. Meet all of your business, social and moral obligations punctually, honestly and honorably. If you are the “go to” person or the “go to” business, you’ll never have to worry about having to generate extra leads or word-of-mouth referrals.
Be Decisive. Make a decision right now. My general rule is that if I’m 80 percent certain, the extra 20 percent of my indecisiveness is a mixture of emotions based on both excitement and fear. Be Tough. Demand only the highest and best standards of everyone you surround yourself with…and that includes setting, demanding and being accountable for high standards for yourself. Remember that as the leader goes, so goes the organization. And if you are truly leading, you have to be firm and consistent in setting, establishing and following your own “rules of the game.”
Give and You Shall Receive. Give the thing you want most and you’ll be amazed at what you get in return. See all opportunities as a way to give and share and add value, and you’ll see your efforts multiplied in ways you couldn’t have imagined, for the greater good of you, your company and your customers.
