Aaron Sorkin To Write Sony's Steve Jobs Biopic Script

Sony picked up the rights to the Steve Jobs biography written by Walter Isaacson (well worth a read) and now they've announced that they've signed up Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network, The West Wing) to script it.

So we know that Jobs will come out of this sounding very snappy and clever indeed. Whether Sorkin will manage to stay a bit more faithful to the book this time is still to be seen. The Social Network was a good movie, but a poor biography.

Verizon Killing Off Grandfathered Unlimited Plans

Well I was half expecting this. There's been a clear move away from unlimited data plans from the biggest carriers and sooner or later they were going to want to get rid of the grandfathered plans.

Still with the new shared family data plans, I might actually come out okay on this one.

Review: Anathem by Neal Stephenson

Neal Stephenson writes about big ideas. Frequently very big ideas. It can be a little off putting at times.

Certainly the first few chapters for Anathem were a struggle. Stephenson threw me head first into a new world with a new language and very little explanation. It was frustrating.

But perseverance sometimes pays off and it did in this case. Once I started to get a feel for the setting, the richness of it and some of the ideas that Stephenson was playing with started to shine.

Personally I found this a much more compelling story than Cryptonomicon. Admittedly at least half of it is people standing around and telling each other things, but Stephenson has a knack for making that seem interesting.

He's always had a fondness for playing with language and he gets to take that to the nth degree here. There's an impressive logical consistancy to the evolution of language displayed here and it's actually one of my favorite parts of the book. I'm not quite so keen on some of the more out there ideas that are introduced later on.

There are some sections that really weren't entirely necessary. Parts of the road trip seemed to serve very little actual purpose and at 900+ pages I'm pretty sure it could have benefited from some editing. But over all I think it's one of his stronger works.

This is exactly the sort of thing that people are worried about happening when you have companies that are both internet providers and huge entertainment providers as well.

After all if the quality of the Xfinity broadcast is better than that from Netflix or Amazon, where is the customer likely to spend their money?

Assuming you mean it's about the same as Twitter that is.

I would guess the studies numbers for public activity on Google+ are about right. I think a lot of people do post once or twice and then give up. I also think most posts don't get a lot of plusses or comments.

But you know what? The exact same thing is true of Twitter. And yet strangely no one in the tech press is rushing around calling that a failure.

It's one of science's holy grails. A way to ward off the effect of aging. And it seems that gene therapy may in fact be able to do that. Well it works in mice at least. Which is a credible start.

A 24% increase in lifespan is pretty significant I think. The current world average life span is 67 years so in theory (yes it's all wildly speculative) that would bump it to 83. And in Japan where they live to 81 on average, they could expect to get to 100 on a regular basis.

Google Planning To Market Multiple Nexus Devices This Year?

If this Wall Street Journal report is true, this is a radical departure from Google's Nexus strategy to date and suggests they've finally had enough of trying to play by the cell phone carriers rules.

So long as they don't get too carried away I'm all for this. We don't need a Samsung style device explosion, but four different Nexus phones from different manufacturers, all pure Google might be a great way to resurrect the brand.
