Visit To Universitas Airlangga, Surabaya, Indonesia

From the 4^thto 7^th of February 2012, Persatuan Mahasiswa Fakulti Farmasi (PMFFAR) organized a visit to Universitas Airlangga, Indonesia. The theme for this memorable visit is “Menglobalisasi Ilmu dan Budaya”. A total of 18 students including the committee involved in organizing this visit and 9 representatives from Badan Eksekutif Mahasiswa (BEM). Two lecturers who went along were Dr. Mohd Makmor Bakry and Dr. Norazrina Azmi. This was the very first time PMFFAR organized such an event to this university. This visit had fulfilled the desire of UKM to have an internationalization programme between Malaysia and Indonesia.

On the first day of the program, they had an ice breaking session in order to get to know each other better. Other than that, they had a meeting regarding the community service that will be held the following day. During the meeting, everyone took part actively in brainstorming ideas and finally they came out with survey questions about proper procedures on medicine disposal.

On the second day, they did the community service at Kelurahan Gubeng Surabaya. Gubeng is a village situated in Surabaya. They did a one-to-one interview between the students and the villagers. The villagers who joined in this interview was about 30 to 50 people. After the interview, they had a small tour around Surabaya such as Jembatan Suramadu, Tugu Pahlawan, Masjid Kemayoran, House of Sampoerna, Pasar Oleh-oleh Ji.Genteng and other places.

On the last day of the visit, they had “Pharmacy Tour” which they went around the faculty buildings in the campus such as the laboratories and lecture halls. Then, they went to campus C where the hospital also known as “Rumah Sakit Pendidikan” is situated. There was also Tropical Disease Centre (TDC) where all research about diseases are carried out. At night, closing ceremony was held which featured nice cultural performances from Malaysia and Indonesia. A great dinner at that night was provided!

Participants headed back to Malaysia on the next day. Through this event, UKM pharmacy students learnt a lot of new things and experience the life of being pharmacy students in Indonesia. They had fun and build strong rapport with the pharmacy students of Airlangga University. "It was a great and wonderful moment being there!", a participant said. PMFfar hopes that such visit can be held annually but to different universities in different countries. It will allow our students to gain more experiences, learn new things and apply them in our faculty.

2nd University Kebangsaan Malaysia – Mahidol University Joint Scientific Conference

Under the main theme of :“Advancing Pharmacy for ASEAN Community’’, MUPY (Faculty of Pharmacy, Mahidol University) hosted the 7th Indochina Conference on Pharmaceutical Sciences (Pharma Indochina VII) in conjunction with the 2nd University Kebangsaan Malaysia – Mahidol University Joint Scientific Conference. Besides Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, this conference was also participated by two other universities which are the Faculty of Pharmacy, Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine & Pharmacy and Hanoi University of Pharmacy. With the topic 'Pharmaceutics and drug delivery system', this year we saw a total of more than 300 lecturers, students, and scholars from various countries taking part in the two-day event including the lecturers, students and scholars from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

The conference focused on recent advances in all disciplines of pharmaceutical sciences and pharmacy practice and also the impact of the establishment of ASEAN Economic Community on ASEAN pharmacy circle. Among the activities organized in the conference were talks, open discussion and forums by top leaders both in science and practice aspects of pharmacy, oral and poster presentations and also cultural performances.

Representatives from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia have received awards in the category of pharmaceutics and drug delivery system. Dr. Shiow-Fern Ng had won the best oral presentation award while both Dr Haliza Katas and Attique ur Rahman Mufti had won the best poster presentation award.

A Date with Green Lung

UKM Green Lung, formerly known as Tobacco Control Team recently organised “A Date with Green Lung event”. The aim of the event is to expose the new member of Green Lung about the importance of smoking cessation and also to train the members of Green Lung in giving the right information to the public about the tobacco control and smokes free environment.

The event received large turnouts from students not only from Faculty of Pharmacy but also from other faculties in KTSN as well. The event kicked off by featuring an enlightening talk on tobacco control by the UKM Green Lung President, Ms Low Hui Sin and multimedia show. Afterwards, the atmosphere was filled with fun and excitement when interactive ice breaking session and station games were carried out. The participants were then given the chance to show their creativity and teamwork with other group members by presenting a sketch drama which conveyed the message of the importance of smoking cessation towards our health.

The event came to an end with the prizes awarding ceremony to all the participating groups. The president of the programme, Ms Thum Jing Wen hopes that the participants will gain insightful information about the organisation and raise their awareness on the importance and benefits of a smoke-free environment to our health and daily life through this programme.

Interaction Day 2011

Theme: Interaksi Farmasi, Integrasi Direalisasi

This annual program was consisted of all years of pharmacy students, lecturers, and pharmacy staffs. We were divided into four groups: Amaranth (Red), Indigo (Blue), Tartrazine (Yellow) and Chlorophyll (Green). The programme aims to strengthen the bonds among participants of the Faculty of Pharmacy and instill culture of excellence in terms of social skills among students. Several interesting activities were held in order to ice break the relationships between participants of different races, identities and backgrounds.

At 7.15a.m, the participants assembled and registered according to their group at the respective places. Firstly, we had an aerobic exercise which was led by a group of 20 students. All participants showed their exciting interest in this warm up exercise. The programme was carried on by the opening ceremony which was officiated by our Dean of Faculty of Pharmacy, Prof. Ibrahim Bin Jantan, and then it was followed by the speech presented by chairman of Interaction Day, Muhammad Munzir Bin Sidi Omar. Later, everyone enjoyed the Choir performance which involved the newbie of Faculty of Pharmacy.

Next, exciting matches between participants officially started on the battlefield. At the same time, kid’s games such as drawing competition were also started and it was specially organized for the lecturers’ and staffs’ children. In the field, all participants enjoyed the games organized and put their efforts in winning the various activities like puzzle, netball, as well as brick game which were carried out simultaneously. Participants were cheered and applauded by the remaining team members who showed support to their beloved team in order to win the matches. Our beloved Dean also involved in the Futsal match and showed his energetic power in the game. The finale match: Tug of War was the highlight and anticipated part of the today’s matches. All of the team put in their maximum level of effort to win and supporters also shouted their lungs out to support their respective teams. Everyone strived as much as possible and utilized their energy fully in order to ensure their team to win the match. It was then the time for the prize giving ceremony after determining the winner for each match. The winner of the overall events belonged to Chlorophyll, followed by Tartrazine, Amaranth and lastly Indigo.

At the end of the program, everybody was exhausted but yet we enjoyed to the fullest on this meaningful interaction day! Winning or losing is not important as we all have tried our best and achieve the aim to unite and strengthen our faculty family by working together and integrate the social skills as well.

According to the chairman of Interaction Day, Muhammad Munzir Bin Sidi Omar said, “I think Interaction Day is among the best day in my life in UKM. I am satisfied with the program held even though some lecturers are not able to attend. I am happy as Interaction Day had achieved its objective and made the students know and interact well with each other.” All in all, we cannot deny Interaction Day is one of the sweet memories in our life. See you next year!

79 Pharmacy Students Graduated!

Theme : Apresiasi Melestari Kecemerlangan
Aim : To uphold the name and image of University Kebangsaan Malaysia in the eyes of local community

A lot of programmes were conducted during this event such as Malaysia Book of Records, Explore Race and Upin Ipin In The House. The closing ceremony was officiated by Chancellor of University Kebangsaan Malaysia at Pentas Utama. Exhibition was also held which involved all of the faculties and each had their own booth for the exhibition. Faculty of Pharmacy was in charged of conducting an exhibition on asthma and tobacco control. The exhibition was held at Dewan Gemilang. Both undergraduate and postgraduate pharmacy students were responsible for the exhibition. During exhibition, we presented medications on asthma as well as promoted our faculty to the public. Besides, the way on how to administer the medication and the way of preparing emulsion were demonstrated by those on duty. Green Lung members were there as well to explain on smoking cessation.

The Convocation Day of our faculty fell on 27^th of September 2011, which was a memorable Tuesday to our beloved seniors. All of the lecturers and seniors gathered at UKM’s Dewan Canselor Tun Abdul Razak (DECTAR), waiting for award of certificates. On that day, all the graduated seniors had broad smile on their face and not to forget a must to-do-thing during convocation was that they threw their mortar board highly up to the sky. That day would become the last page of seniors’ UKM life.

To seniors who graduated year 2010/2011: Congratulation on your success! All the best in your future undertakings and May God Bless You All!

New Pharmacy Student Oath Taking Ceremony

On the 22nd September 2011, an oath taking ceremony was held specially for the new students. The ceremony took place at TIBE hall. This event was also an event to welcome the newcomers and it involved students, lecturers as well as staffs of Faculty of Pharmacy. Besides, a representative from Malaysian Pharmaceutical Pharmacy (MPS) attended the event too with the purpose of supporting, encouraging and welcoming the new pharmacy students. Persatuan Mahasiswa/si Fakulti Farmasi (PMFFAR) organized this ceremony in collaboration with the Pharmacy Faculty to make this ceremony a sweet success. It started off with opening ceremony and a speech by our Dean, Prof. Dr. Ibrahim bin Jantan. The leader for the oath taking ceremony was Aminur Anuar bin Abd. Rahman. The Oath Taking Ceremony was held to make sure the new students remember the promises they made to themselves, lecturers and families. According to the oath :

The students promised to become a knowledgeable, good-mannered and professional student.

They promised to obey the God and take care of their behaviour.
They will increase their knowledge all the way through their studies as a pharmacy student to serve the community in the future.
They will always alert about the current issues happened to increase their professionalism efficiency.
They will obey the law that control the pharmacy profession and will support the law.
They will take responsibility to serve the best services after they succeeded.

At the end of the event, Prof. Ibrahim also passed a laboratory coat to the class representative of the new students, Syafiq Basyar. It was a symbol of the promises by the new students to equip themselves well from the four year course in order to be outstanding pharmacists in future. This event was a meaningful for every new students as it was a baby-step for themselves to start their lives as pharmacists. Best of luck!

Pharmacy Career Talk in UKM

A Career Talk especially for the new students of Faculty of Pharmacy, UKM was held on 8th September 2011 (Thursday), at Lecture Hall 4, UKM Kuala Lumpur Campus. It was organized by the faculty as one of the many activities for the new students during orientation week. The main objective of the talk was to expose all the job opportunities in the market for Pharmacy students.

The invited speakers were :

Mdm. Wan Hwei Yen, a Community Pharmacist from Guardian Pharmacy.
Ms. Sivakami Janahiraman, a Pharmacist from Kuala Lumpur Hospital.
Mr. Ananda Prakash, a Senior Manager from YSP Industries Sdn. Bhd.
Pn. Asniza Alias, a Pharmacy Officer from Pharmaceutical Services Division, Federal Territory Kuala Lumpur Health Department.
Dr. Mohd Makmor Bakry, a Senior Lecturer from Faculty of Pharmacy, UKM.

All the speakers shared their experiences as pharmacists, in the different fields. Besides, the invited speakers did explain about the job prospect, including the advantages of their job in order to attract students. After that, it was the ‘question and answer’ session. Many students grabbed these golden opportunities to ask the speakers on their confusion towards pharmacists' future.
