All The Holy Ones Would Inherit The Kingdom

Background

At the end of the age, the holy ones, would inherit the kingdom of God.

Daniel 7:18
But the holy ones of the Most High shall receive the kingdom, and possess the kingdom unto the age, and unto the Age of ages.

The False Teaching

The holy ones who followed the Way of the Flesh would inherit the kingdom. Holy ones who were women, children, slaves or who followed the Way of the Spirit would not inherit the kingdom.

New Testament Response

Paul says that all the holy ones would inherit the kingdom:

May he strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all his holy ones.

False Teachers

Who Were the False Teachers?

The false teachers that had come to Ephesus were most likely like those who came to Antioch in Acts. They placed a heavy emphasis on Old Testament Law and circumcision:

Acts 15:1
Some men came down from Judea and taught the brothers, "Unless you are circumcised after the custom of Moses, you can't be saved."

Their teachings were theologically sophisticated and they used Old Testament Scriptures to support their arguments. Given the anti-Pharisee view of the New Testament Scriptures, I think it is safe to assume the false teachers were Pharisees or some type of teachers of the Law.

Paul and the Truth

Was Paul Lying?

The False Teaching

Paul was lying because he only taught the Way of the Spirit and not the Way of the Flesh. He didn't want the Gentiles to be saved on the Day of Destruction.

Faith and Works

Who had faith and who had works?

The False Teaching:

Those who followed the Way of the Spirit, relied on their faith in the Spirit of Christ for salvation from torment in Hades. Those who followed the Way of the Flesh, relied on their works of the Law for salvation from torment in Hades and salvation from the Day of Destruction.

New Testament Response:

Those who had faith in Christ would be saved in both ways and that both faith and works have a role in the Christian life.

James 2:18
Yes, a man will say, "You have faith, and I have works." Show me your faith without works, and I by my works will show you my faith.

The Afterlife

What would happen to those in the Church when they died?

The False Teaching:

When those who followed the Way of the Spirit died, they would go to the good side of Hades. They would not be resurrected at the end of the age . Those who followed the Way of the Flesh would also go to the good side of Hades but only holy ones would ascend to heaven and would be resurrected at the end of the age.

New Testament Response:

Those who had faith in Christ would go to heaven when they died and would be resurrected when Christ returned.

1 Corinthians 15:12-14
Now if Christ is preached, that he has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there is no resurrection of the dead, neither has Christ been raised. If Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain, and your faith also is in vain.

New Testament writers respond to the idea that only holy ones ascended to heaven by saying that one one had ascended into heaven.

No one has ascended into heaven, but he who descended out of heaven, the Son of Man, who is in heaven.

Not even King David made it into heaven.

the fullness of him - Paul uses the word "fullness" to describe the expansion of God's favor from the Jews to the Gentiles and anyone who would believe in Christ.

who fills all of us in every way - False teachers were saying that the Spirit of Christ filled those of the Way of the Spirit but Paul says he fills everyone in every way.

He put all in subjection under his feet - Paul alludes to Psalm 110:1 again to show that all have been put under the Lordship of Christ.

in heaven - The false teachers maintained that the Spirit of Christ was not in heaven. Paul refutes that position.

The False Teaching:

The Christ in the Flesh would not be Lord over those who ascended to heaven.

Matthew 22:41-45
Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, saying, "What do you think of the Christ? Whose son is he?" They said to him, "Of David." He said to them, "How then does David in the Spirit call him Lord, saying,'The Lord said to my Lord, sit on my right hand, until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet?' "If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?"

Since the Pharisees believed that David was in heaven, they believed that the Christ would not rule over him. However, in Psalm 110:1, David refers to Christ as Lord. The Pharisees were not able to refute that.

Peter quotes the same Psalm and uses it to prove that Christ is Lord over all of Israel.

Acts 2:33-36
Being therefore exalted by the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this, which you now see and hear. For David didn't ascend into the heavens, but he says himself, 'The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit by my right hand,until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet."' The power and strength of God's might was expected to destroy the Gentiles during the Day of Destruction but Paul says that those who believe (those who follow the Way of the Spirit), including Gentiles, would experience God's might as a good thing.

having the eyes of your mind enlightened - Paul may have Psalm 13:3 in mind here:

Psalm 13:3
Behold, and answer me, Yahweh, my God. Enlighten my eyes, lest I sleep in death;

Regardless, the theme of light/dark in the Old Testament is a metaphor for those under God's judgement and lacking His favor. Paul has already stressed that they have God's favor in previous verses. It is not that kind of enlightenment that they need but rather enlightenment of their understanding.

that you may know - Paul wants them to know, in contrast to the false teaching of secret knowledge

what is the hope of his calling - It was Israel who had been called by God, but Paul is saying here that they have all been called by God and he is the hope of there salvation just as He was for Israel.

what are the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the holy ones - Some Jews were looking towards the riches and glory that would come in their inheritance. Paul points instead to God's inheritance. The more holy ones who believed in Christ, the larger was God's inheritance. In Isaiah, God's glory is the light that brings Israel out of darkness, so Paul uses the term "glory" to tie in with "enlightened".

Favor and Judgement

Background:

To the Jew, being in darkness meant not having the Lord's favor and to be under His judgment. Isaiah makes use of the darkness metaphor and by extension, the blindness metaphor.

Isaiah 59:9-10
Therefore is justice far from us, neither does righteousness overtake us: we look for light, but, behold, darkness; for brightness, but we walk in obscurity. We grope for the wall like the blind; yes, we grope as those who have no eyes: we stumble at noonday as in the twilight; among those who are lusty we are as dead men.

Isaiah prophesied that God’s salvation would come to Israel and they would no longer be in darkness. God’s light would shine upon them and they would be a light to the Gentiles.

For, behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the peoples; but Yahweh will arise on you, and his glory shall be seen on you. Nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising.

The False Teaching:

Those didn't follow the Way of the Flesh were in darkness and were blind.

that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ - Paul corrects the idea that the God of Jesus was different than the God of Israel. There was one God for the Church.

the glorious Father - Paul corrects the idea that there was more than one father.

may give to you a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him - Paul corrects the idea that secret knowledge was only for some in the church. Everyone in the Church had the same spirit to know Christ. Paul stresses the importance of the knowledge that salvation is in Christ and their secret knowledge of other things was not important.

The Holy Spirit and the Spirit of Christ

The False Teaching:

Those who followed the Way of the Spirit did not have the Holy Spirit but had the Spirit of Christ. The Holy Spirit was exclusive to the Jews.

New Testament Response:

Luke shows that the Holy Spirit was given beyond the Jews:

Acts 10:45
They of the circumcision who believed were amazed, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was also poured out on the Gentiles.

Paul explains that everyone should have the Spirit of Christ.

Romans 8:9
But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if it is so that the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if any man doesn't have the Spirit of Christ, he is not his.

The idea of different spirits was causing division in the Church. Paul says that the Church was given one spirit.

1 Corinthians 12:13
For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether bond or free; and were all given to drink into one Spirit.

Philippians 1:27
Only let your way of life be worthy of the Good News of Christ, that, whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of your state, that you stand firm in one spirit, with one soul striving for the faith of the Good News;

1 Corinthians 12:4
Now there are various kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit.

There was a false teaching that promoted the idea that one should not pray for Gentiles who reject the Way of the Flesh. Paul, being a Jew, would not have been expected to pray for them either, but Paul corrects this idea by saying that he also prays for them.

For this reason - "This reason" is that they believed the "Good News". See Eph. 1:13.

I also - Paul "also" prays for them. See Eph. 1:16.

having heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus - The false teachers would have instructed others not to pray for those whose faith was in Jesus, but Paul says that this is the reason that he does pray for them. Paul also confirms Jesus' lordship by using the title "Lord".

and the love which you have toward all the holy ones - False teachers taught that those who followed the Way of the Flesh should not love those who followed the Way of the Spirit. Paul commends them for loving "all" of the holy ones.

Ephesians 1:14

who is a pledge of our inheritance The Holy Spirit acts as a down payment of our inheritance. This is not to be confused with God's inheritance.

to the redemption of God’s own possession As mentioned in Eph. 1:13, the Holy Spirit marks believers in Christ as God's inheritance. They are His possession.

to the praise of his glory The false teachers thought glory would be brought to the Jews when they received their inheritance in the new age. Paul explains that the expansion of God's inheritance beyond Jews only, brings glory to God.

Ephesians 1:13

in whom you also - By saying "you also", Paul includes Gentiles with himself (a Jew).

having heard the word of the truth - Paul says this in response to accusations that he was lying about his message of salvation.

the Good News of your salvation - Paul applies "The Good News" to Gentiles as well as Jews.

in whom, having also believed - This is in contrast to the false teaching that one could achieve salvation through works, according to the Way of the Flesh, and faith wasn't needed.

you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise - The Holy Spirit has a role in two different inheritances. One is our inheritance. See Eph. 1:14 for the Holy Spirit's role in our inheritance. The other inheritance is God's inheritance. In ancient times, when something was purchased, a deed of purchase was kept sealed as proof of ownership. An official seal was marked in clay in order to seal the document. Those who believe in Christ are sealed with the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit that is the identification mark that shows that we are God's possession. Paul is saying that not only are the Jews God's inheritance but all those who believe in Christ are as well.

Sealed Deeds

Background:

When the Babylonian army laid siege to Jerusalem. God instructed Jeremiah to buy land currently occupied by the Babylonian army as a sign that God would redeem Israel to the land.

Jeremiah 32:8-15

So Hanamel my uncle’s son came to me in the court of the guard according to the word of Yahweh, and said to me, Please buy my field that is in Anathoth, which is in the land of Benjamin; for the right of inheritance is yours, and the redemption is yours; buy it for yourself.

Then I knew that this was the word of Yahweh. I bought the field that was in Anathoth of Hanamel my uncle’s son, and weighed him the money, even seventeen shekels of silver. I subscribed the deed, and sealed it, and called witnesses, and weighed him the money in the balances. So I took the deed of the purchase, both that which was sealed, containing the terms and conditions, and that which was open; and I delivered the deed of the purchase to Baruch the son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah, in the presence of Hanamel my uncle’s son, and in the presence of the witnesses who subscribed the deed of the purchase, before all the Jews who sat in the court of the guard.

I commanded Baruch before them, saying, Thus says Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel: Take these deeds, this deed of the purchase which is sealed, and this deed which is open, and put them in an earthen vessel; that they may continue many days. For thus says Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel: Houses and fields and vineyards shall yet again be bought in this land.

When Jeremiah redeemed the land, there were two copies of the deed: one open and one sealed. The sealed copy was to be opened if there was any dispute regarding the open one. The sealed copy was marked by an official seal in clay.

Background:

When God Redeemed His people from exile, this was “Good News” or “the Gospel” to all Jews.

Isaiah 52:7
How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace, who brings good news of good, who publishes salvation, who says to Zion, “Your God reigns!”

Paul declares that everyone who believes in Christ is redeemed and this "Gospel" applied to them too.

Redemption

Background:

When an Israelite become poor and sold himself into slavery, he or a blood relative could redeem them out of slavery. This is explained in Old Testament Law:

Leviticus 25:25-28
If your brother becomes poor, and sells some of his possessions, then his kinsman who is next to him shall come, and redeem that which his brother has sold. If a man has no one to redeem it, and he becomes prosperous and finds sufficient means to redeem it; then let him reckon the years since its sale, and restore the surplus to the man to whom he sold it; and he shall return to his property. But if he isn't able to get it back for himself, then what he has sold shall remain in the hand of him who has bought it until the Year of Jubilee: and in the Jubilee it shall be released, and he shall return to his property.

When the Israelites were exiled to Babylon, they are described as being sold into slavery by God.

Isaiah 52:3
For thus says Yahweh, "You were sold for nothing; and you shall be redeemed without money."

Psalm 44:12
You sell your people for nothing, and have gained nothing from their sale.

Isaiah 50:1
Thus says Yahweh, "Where is the bill of your mother's divorce, with which I have put her away? or which of my creditors is it to whom I have sold you? Behold, for your iniquities were you sold, and for your transgressions was your mother put away.

The Jews waited for the Year of Redemption, which was to take place at the same time as the Day of Vengeance (aka Day of Destruction).

Isaiah 63:4
For the day of vengeance was in my heart, and the year of my redemption is come.

The False Teaching:

The only people that God was going to redeem was His people the Israelites.

Paul refers to all believers in Christ as being redeemed - not just Jews.

so that we should be to the praise of his glory - This is opposed to the idea that certain Jews would be praised for their glory and riches.

we who hoped before in Christ - The word used for "hoped before" in the Greek is proelpizō and mirrors the word protithēmi (See Eph. 1:9). It raises the question, hoped before what? The false teachers were waiting for the Christ in the Flesh to come in order to put their hope in him but Paul says that Christ already came in the flesh and we should put our hope in him before the Day of Destruction.
