Back from Uganda

I am back from Uganda and I thought I would share a photo. Part of the St. James and St. Johns mission was to present bibles to Batwa Pygmies who were on their way to literacy. Remember, they have lived in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest for thousands of years and have been kicked out with no land, no shelter and only their survival skills to live on. The Anglican Communion ( Church of Uganda ) has rushed in and bought land for them, setup schools and is trying to get others involved. What is the first passage they read from their new bible? Romans 8:28-31"What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us?"

Black and single: Is marriage really for white people?

A good article from CNN: Why are you still single? I hate that question. Yet I am forced to confront it.One reason: personal responsibility. Among the men I have dated, there were definitely some who were ready for something a little more significant than I was willing to give. Did I drag my feet because I wasn't ready? Or was it because those men weren't right for me? It's debatable and probably a combination of the two.

Americans Identify What They Consider "Holy" Books According to Barna.org

Americans Identify What They Consider “Holy” Books

July 7, 2008

(Ventura, California) - As the United States becomes a more pluralistic nation, it would be expected that a broader base of books would be accepted by increasing numbers of adults as "sacred literature" or "holy books." A new survey by The Barna Group discovered that about two-dozen such books were listed by a national sample of 1003 adults. However, only four books were listed by at least 1% of the public, and just one book was deemed to be sacred or holy by at least 5% of the public.

The Bible Stands Alone

The only book listed by at least 5% was the Bible, which was named as a holy book by 84% of the public. Although the same percentage of respondents (84%) described themselves as Christian, one out of every 14 of them (7%) did not consider the Bible to be sacred literature, while nearly two out of every five adults who do not consider themselves to be Christian (38%) categorized the Bible as holy.

Three-quarters or more of most subgroups of the population listed the Bible as a holy book. The only exceptions were Asians (just 54% mentioned the Bible); people associated with non-Christian faith groups (59% of whom listed the Bible); atheists and agnostics (30%); and people who describe themselves as "mostly liberal" on social and political issues (69%).

Get to Know the New Guy!

Exciting News from St. Michael & All Angels Episcopal Church in Dallas, Texas. They have hired a director for college and young adult ministries. - Web Elf

Here's the scoop:

Greetings from your new "Director for College and Young Adult Ministries"
(a.k.a. "the new guy")

Hello, my name is Nate Bostian. I am very proud to be on board at Saint Michael and All Angels as your new director for college and young adult ministries. I have attended one really wonderful "GAP" (Graduates And Professionals) meeting in June, and I have heard wonderful things about how vibrant and active the GAP group is.

I look forward to building on the strong foundation that has already been established, and supporting the development of young adult ministries in any way I can.

To that end, I would love to meet as many of you as I can. Diana Bowen and I would like to invite you to GRAB LUNCH with us after the 11am Service on SUNDAY, JULY 20th. We will meet in the narthex outside of the main chapel, and decide where to go from there!

Theology Live! is back in June

I have fond memories of Theology Live at the Gingerman from 5 years ago. I spent several Monday nights with friends over great ale discussing theological issues with interesting theologians. I learned a lot about my friends, and gained insight into Christian thinking.
And really what church denomination is open to talking theology over a beer?

Theology Live starts June 2nd on the back patio of the Ginger Man Pub, 2718 Boll Street in Uptown Dallas with Dr. Billy Abraham speaking on Faith and the Public Square. Dr. Billy Abraham is a professor at Perkins School of Theology, and grew up protestant in Ireland.
