12 Monster Planes That Dominate the Skies

Double decker, six engines, wingspans longer
than football fields—it’s amazing these monster
planes can even get off the ground.

The marvel of flight never ceases to amaze, and the spectacle is that much more unbelievable when the aircraft are longer than Olympic pools,
heavier than the biggest tanks, and taller than 5-story buildings. Here are the most monstrous planes flying today.

Antonov An-225 Mriya

By most metrics, the Antonov An-225 is the biggest plane in the world. Only one of these monster cargo aircraft was built by the

Antonov Design Bureau in Ukrainian SSR in the 1980s. It was designed to carry the Buran spaceplane, the Soviet version of the

space shuttle, as well as Energia rocket boosters, but the plane quickly found other airlifting work after being refurbished following the collapse of the Soviet space program.

It is the heaviest aircraft ever built, with a maximum takeoff weight of 710 tons. It holds the record for total airlifted payload at

559,580 pounds, as well as airlifted single-item payload at 418,830 pounds. It's has the longest wingspan of any plane currently

flying at 290 feet. It's got six freakin engines. The An-225 is a monster among planes.

Aero Spacelines Super Guppy

A guppy might be prey, but the Super Guppy is a monster. The bloated aircraft has been retired by every institution in the world

save one—NASA. The U.S. space agency finds the Guppy's wide dimensions perfect for transporting spacecraft and rocket components.

The first Super Guppy was constructed from a ballooned fuselage taken from a Boeing C-97 Stratofreighter, taking to the skies in 1965.

The turboprop cargo plane was largely replaced by the Airbus Beluga for large and awkwardly shaped cargo delivery, but as long as NASA still has a use for the Super Guppy, it will continue to baffle people in the sky—and NASA loves the Super Guppy.

Lockheed C-5 Galaxy

With a payload capacity of almost 135 tons, the C-5 Galaxy is the largest aircraft routinely operated by the U.S. military.

The Air Force announced that it was reactivating the monster air lifer in May 2017.

The C-5 has enough cargo space to carry two M1 Abrams tanks, 16 Humvees, 3 Black Hawks, or a variety of other vehicles.

Without cargo, the C-5 can fly up to 7,000 miles without refueling, making it the longest range military airlifter in the world.

When the Air Force needs a lot of tonnage moved quickly, the C-5 is what it turns to.

Boeing 747 Dreamlifter

In the 2000s Boeing found that it needed a cargo plane with an enormous amount of storage to transport components for the 787 Dreamliner,

which has parts made all over the world. The solution was to take its biggest plane, the 747, and build a custom cargo hold around it.

At 65,000 cubic feet, the Dreamlifter has the largest cargo hold in the world, capable of carrying three times the volume of a 747-400F freighter.

The four Dreamlifters Boeing made also use the longest cargo loader in the world and can haul payloads up to 125 tons.

Antonov An-124 Ruslan

McDonnell Douglas KC-10 Extender

Another monster designed and built by the Antonov Design Bureau in the Ukrainian SSR, the An-124 Ruslan, operated by the Russian

Air Force, is the largest military aircraft in the world. For almost 30 years after its introduction in 1984, the An-124 (NATO reporting name:

Condor), was the largest and heaviest cargo aircraft in the world other than the single An-225. The 747-8F overtook the An-124 in 2011.

With a reported payload capacity of 165 tons, the An-124 can haul even more than the C-5 Galaxy, though its range is not as long.

A surviving engineering triumph of the Soviets, the An-124 continues to fly airlifting missions for Russia.

Boeing B-52 Stratofortress

The B-52 entered service in 1955, and the first B-52H, the currently serving model, was introduced in 1961. B-52 bomber is the grandfather

of the air force, aging but still capable of delivering a serious punch.

The BUFF (Big Ugly Fat Fucker) can carry 70,000 pounds of weapons, from precision-guided conventional bombs to nuclear warheads.

While the B-2 stealth bomber and B-1 supersonic bomber could be retired when the B-21 is introduced, the Air Force wants to outfit the

reliable B-52 with new engines to improve efficiency and range. While the giant bomber enters its sixth decade of service, the technology

within its hold is ever-evolving, as the Air Force is also planning to equip the B-52 with the Long Range Stand Off missile, a stealthy nuclear cruise missile.

Airbus Beluga

Airbus Beluga

he Airbus A300-600 Super Transporter, commonly called the Beluga, was designed specifically to transport large and awkward aircraft parts,

similar to the Dreamlifter. Entering service in 1995, the aircraft largely replaced the Super Guppy, serving European needs for large air cargo.

Different parts of the craft were designed and built by Airbus engineers across Europe, in countries including the U.K., Germany, France, and Spain.

It's 124-foot long payload bay can carry almost 52 tons.

Boeing 747

The Dreamlifter is already on the list, but it only represents a small part of the accomplishments of the Queen of the Skies. Over 1,500 Boeing 747s

have been built, serving as one of the largest passenger and cargo aircraft in the world (the 747-8 is the latest model), as a military command center in the sky,

Air Force One, a space shuttle lifter and infrared telescope flier for NASA, and Iron Maiden even has one called Ed Force One.

The aircraft is being phased out of airlines in favor of single-aisle designs that can now fly with enough range to cross the oceans.

But as the only U.S. mass manufactured four-engine jumbo jet, the Boeing 747 has some years in it yet.

Boeing C-17 Globemaster III

The C-5 Galaxy may be the United States' biggest military plane, but the C-17 Globemaster is the primary workhorse.

The aircraft took its first flight in 1991, and 279 of Globemasters have been built since.

The C-17 airlifter can haul about 85 and a half tons into the sky, flying missions around the world to transport troops and cargo,

perform airlifts and medical evacuations, and fly airdrop routes.

Airbus A380

The Airbus A380 is the European 747, and the A380-800 is the largest passenger aircraft ever made, with room for 850 passengers.

It flies some of the longest routes around the planet, but like the 747 may be starting to get replaced with smaller planes with similar range.

A380 production continues as Airbus has built 222 and counting, 101 of those already delivered to the largest customer, Emirates.

The Airbus A380 is truly the world's flying bus, flying more people at a time than any other plane in history.

McDonnell Douglas KC-10 Extender

The largest fuel capacity tanker aircraft in the world entered service in 1981. The KC-10 Extender has a total fuel capacity of 52,250

gallons, or about 175 tons of fuel. It was designed to provide a more capable tanker than the Boeing KC-135, which was about 25 years old at that point.

The Air Force is in the process of acquiring a new tanker, the Boeing KC-46 Pegasus, which will be more efficient and have more advanced

avionics than the KC-10, but the trijet Extender will still have the Pegasus beat on fuel capacity by about 70 tons.

The KC-10 stores jet fuel in three main wing tanks as well as large fuel tanks under the cargo floor. It can alternatively be flown with a crew of 75 and

73 tons of cargo, or 85 tons of cargo in an all-cargo configuration.

Stratolaunch

Paul Allen's Stratolaunch has yet to fly, so we cannot say it dominates the skies just yet, but it certainly is a monster plane. T

he composite six-engine, twin-fuselage aircraft designed and built by Scaled Composites has the longest wingspan in the world, 385 feet from tip to tip.

If you placed Stratolaunch on a football field, the wings would extend through the goalposts an extra 12.5 feet on both sides.

The aircraft is designed to carry rockets up into the stratosphere and drop them, where they would then launch to space.

The alternative to conventional rocket launches could conserve some of the fuel needed to overcome all of Earth's gravity from sea level into orbit, and launch

small rockets at a rapid pace (Stratolaunch could carry as many as three small launch vehicles at a time). Virgin Orbit is working on a similar plan to launch rockets using a 747-400.

Stratolaunch recently conducted low-speed runway tests, the first time it moved under the power of its six Pratt & Whitney turbofans.

High-speed runway tests are next, and when this plane eventually takes to the skies, it will be the biggest monster of them all.

DIE PAD WAS LANK

As jy terugkyk na ŉ sekere tyd van jou lewe, mag jy miskien dink, "Sjoe, ek het darem ŉ lang pad gekom van toe af!" Die pad was lank, ja. Daar was diep valleie waardeur ons moes worstel, styl hoogtes wat ons moes uitklim.

Maar as ons terugdink sal ons sien dat dit juis deur hierdie tye van beproewing was wat ons nader aan ons Heer geleef het. Sy band was altyd daar om ons op te hef, Sy liefde om die seer te heel, en Sy krag om ons te vul met nuwe moed en krag.

Daar was tye wat Hy ons gedra het en daar net een ry voetspore in die sand was, en nou onthou ons net Sy nabyheid in daardie tyd, die seer is nie meer seer nie. Dit is die wonder van Sy liefde. Kom ons plaas dan nou weer ons lewe in en alles wat die toekoms vir ons inhou in Sy bekwame hande, en maak ons Hom ons Leidsman en ons weet, Hy sal ons op die regte pad lei.

Ice jam on the Ausable River in Au Sable Forks NY. Video starts at noon (17:00Z) and ends at 3pm (20:00Z). They happen fast!

Last week, a weather pattern known as a bomb cyclone set record low temperatures across the eastern part of the US and pounded

cities and countryside with inches of snow. Rivers across the northeast were also frozen solid by the chilly weather.

This week, the temperatures bounced back up to nearly 60 degrees in some places, melting the snow and defrosting the rivers rapidly.

When this kind of change in temperature happens, ice jams can occur, like this one in the Ausable River,

captured in a time lapse by the National Weather Service Office in Burlington, Vermont.

The video encompasses only three hours, and the ice begins to break apart and then flow down the river in only a fraction of that time.

Philippine Volcano Explodes in Column of Ash and Superheated Lava

The Philippines' most active volcano ejected a huge column of lava fragments, ash and smoke in a thunderous explosion Monday,

sending thousands of villagers back to evacuation centers and prompting a warning that a violent eruption may be imminent.

The midday explosion sent superheated lava, molten rocks and steam between 3.5 to 5 kilometers (2 to 3 miles) into the blue sky,

and then some cascaded down Mount Mayon's slopes and shrouded nearby villages in darkness, Renato Solidum of the Philippine

Institute of Seismology and Volcanology and other officials said.

From the crater, the deadly debris billowed about three kilometers (1.8 miles) down on the southern plank of Mayon toward a

no-entry danger zone.

There were no immediate reports of deaths or injuries, officials said.

The explosion was the most powerful since the volcano started acting up more than a week ago.

Due to its relatively gentle eruption last week, thousands left emergency shelters and returned to their communities in Legazpi city outside the danger zone.

But Monday's blast sent nearly 12,000 fleeing back to evacuation centers, raising the number of people in those shelters to more than 30,000, Yucot said.

Authorities on Monday raised the alert level to four on a scale of five, which means an explosive eruption is possible within hours or days.

A danger zone around Mayon was expanded to 8 kilometers (5 miles) from the crater, which means thousands of villagers will have to leave their homes.

Airplanes were ordered to stay away from the crater and ash-laden winds and several flights were canceled.

Volcanic ash fell in about a dozen towns in coconut-growing Albay province, where Mayon lies, and in nearby Camarines Sur province,

with visibility being heavily obscured in a few towns because of the thick gray ash fall.

"It was like night time at noon, there was zero visibility in some areas because the ash fall was so thick."

More than 30,000 ash masks and about 5,000 sacks of rice, along with medicine, water and other supplies, were being sent to evacuation centers..

Mayon lies about 340 kilometers (210 miles) southeast of Manila.

With its near-perfect cone, it is popular with climbers and tourists but has erupted about 50 times in the last 500 years, sometimes violently.

In 2013, an ash eruption killed five climbers who had ventured near the summit despite warnings.

Mayon's first recorded eruption was in 1616 and the most destructive, in 1814, killed more than 1,200 people and buried the town of Cagsawa in volcanic mud.

The belfry of Cagsawa's stone church still juts out from the ground in an eerie reminder of Mayon's fury.

This stone church is actually built for the Christians affected during the volcano eruption. I believe that the stones used even came from Mayon herself. Sous:
     1 1/2 eetlepel canola olie
     1/2 ui, blokkies gesny
     1/2 eetlepel fyn gemaalde vars gemmer
     2 knoffelhuisies, fyngekap
     1/4 teelepel rooi peper
     1/8 teelepel swartpeper
     1/2 koppie asyn
     1/4 koppie water
     3 gram tamatiepasta
     1/4 koppie soya sous
     2 eetlepels sesame olie
     1 koppie suiwer esdoornstroop
     1 1/2 eetlepel druiwe asyn
     1/8 teelepel gedroogde tiemie
     1/2 eetlepel sout

Rub:
     1/4 koppie(soet) paprika (gebruik 1/2 pimento as jy lus is vir 'n rokerige geur)
     1/2 koppie bruinsuiker
     1 eetlepel swartpeper
     1 eetlepel knoffel poeier
     2 teelepels komyn
     2 teelepels sout
     2 teelepels rooi peper
     1 teelepel droë mosterd
     1/2 teelepel gedroogde oregano
Meng alles en hou eenkant

Metode:
Verhit die olie oor medium hitte.
Voeg dan die ui, knoffel, gemmer, rooi peper en swartpeper by.
Kook tot die ui deursigtig is, voeg dan die asyn, water, tamatie pasta, sojasous, sesame olie en esdoornstroop by.
Klits goed om die tamatie pasta goed in te meng.
Voeg die tiemie, mosterd en 1/2 van die sout by.
Smoor vir lae hitte vir 30 minute.
Verpulp die sous met 'n stokblender.
Gebruik dadelik of plaas in 'n lugdigte houer.

Smeer die ribbe met die rub en laat in die yskas vir 5-6 uur om te marineer.
Verhit die oond tot 106C of 225 en plaas die ribbe in die middel van die oond.
Bak vir 3 1/2 tot 4 uur, draai ŉ paar keer om te seker te maak dat dit alkante mooi gaar word.
Wanneer dit ribbe gaar is, stel die oond op gril.
Smeer die ribbes aan weerskante met die sous en braai tot die sous borrel, ongeveer 4-5 minute.

Een van die groot gevare en aantrekkingskragte van virtuele geldeenhede
is reeds anonimiteit.
Die waarborg van anonimiteit laat die verbruikers van virtuele geldeenhede toe om onwettige transaksies soos die
koop van dwelms anoniem en redelik veilig te kan doen.

Maar daar is ook meer edele voordele aan anonimiteit soos om geld internasionaal rond te skuif sonder die beslommernis en nuuskierige
oë van die "owerhede".
Verder is virtuele geldeenhede baie nuttig wanneer dit kom by die "bestuur" van 'n oordadige belastinglas.

Hoe die toekoms met virtuele geld daar gaan uitsien is nie heeltemal duidelik nie, maar 'n paar dinge lyk seker.
Die bankwese sal verander en daar is geen waarborg dat banke deel daarvan gaan wees nie.

Sentrale banke sal deel hiervan moet wees - of irrelevant word.

Hoe dit ook al sy, ek is opgewonde oor 'n toekoms waar die "owerhede" baie minder mag oor my en my finansies sal hê.
As ek wel dwelms wil koop is dit tog my saak en ek het geen burokraat nodig om my te beskerm nie, ek is verantwoordelik vir myself.
In elk geval is die vooruitsigte van minder belasting baie aantreklik.

Coffee may seem harmless, but its historical rap sheet is a mile long.

1. Mecca
Coffee was banned in Mecca in 1511, as it was believed to stimulate radical thinking and hanging out—the governor thought it might unite his opposition.
Java also got a bad rap for its use as a stimulant—some Sufi sects would pass around a bowl of coffee at funerals to stay awake during prayers.

2. Italy
When coffee arrived in Europe in the 16th century, clergymen pressed for it to be banned and labeled Satanic.
But Pope Clement VIII took a taste, declared it delicious, and even quipped that it should be baptized.
On the strength of this papal blessing, coffeehouses rapidly sprang up throughout Europe.

3. Constantinople
After Murad IV claimed the Ottoman throne in 1623, he quickly forbade coffee and set up a system of reasonable penalties.
The punishment for a first offense was a beating. Anyone caught with coffee a second time was sewn into a leather bag and thrown into the waters of the Bosporus.

4. Sweden
Sweden gave coffee the ax in 1746.
The government also banned “coffee paraphernalia”—with cops confiscating cups and dishes.
King Gustav III even ordered convicted murderers to drink coffee while doctors monitored how long the cups of joe took to kill them, which was great for convicts and boring for the doctors.

5. Prussia
In 1777, Frederick the Great of Prussia issued a manifesto claiming beer’s superiority over coffee.
He argued that coffee interfered with the country’s beer consumption, apparently hoping a royal statement would make Prussians eager for an eye-opening brew each morning.
Frederick’s statement proclaimed, “His Majesty was brought up on beer,” explaining why he thought breakfast drinking was a good idea.

COFFEE THROUGH THE AGES

Originally the coffee plant grew naturally in Ethiopia, but once transplanted in Arabia it was monopolised by the Arabs.
The Turks were the first country to adopt it as a drink, often adding spices such as clove, cinnamon, cardamom and anise to the brew.
Coffee was introduced much later to countries beyond Arabia whose inhabitants believed it to be a delicacy and guarded its secret as if they were top secret military plans.

The spread of coffee was started illegally as the transportation of the coffee plant out of Muslim nations was forbidden by the government.
Pope Vincent III enjoyed coffee so much he baptised it, saying “coffee is so delicious it would be a pity to let the infidels have exclusive use of it.”

In the 15th century, Muslims introduced coffee in Persia, Egypt, northern Africa and Turkey.
From the Muslim world, coffee spread to Europe, where it became popular in the 17th century.
Dutch traders were the first to start the large scale importation of coffee into Europe. In the 1700’s, coffee found its way to the Americas by means of a French infantry captain who nurtured a single plant on the Atlantic journey.
This one plant, transplanted to the Caribbean Island of Martinique, became the predecessor of over 19 million trees on the island.
The coffee plant found its way to the rest of the tropical regions of South and Central America.
Coffee was declared the national drink of the then colonised United States by the Continental Congress, in protest of the excessive tax on tea levied by the British crown.

Espresso, a recent innovation in the way to prepare coffee, obtained its origin in 1822, with the innovation of the first crude espresso machine in France.
The Italians perfected this wonderful machine and were the first to manufacture it.
Espresso has become such an integral part of Italian life and culture, that there are presently over 200,000 espresso bars in Italy.

1. Shepherds discovered coffee in Ethiopia circa 800 A.D.
Legend has it that 9th century goat herders noticed the effect caffeine had on their goats, who appeared to "dance" after eating coffee berries.
A local monk then made a drink with coffee berries and found that it kept him awake at night, thus the original cup of coffee was born.

2. Coffee is the second most traded commodity on earth.
According to the Global Exchange, there are approximately 25 million farmers in over 50 countries involved in producing coffee.
The number one commodity? Oil.

3. In Italian espresso means "when something is forced out."
This refers to the way espresso is made — forcing boiling water through pressed coffee grounds.
And, although espresso has more caffeine per volume than coffee, because it's consumed in smaller quantities, it has about a third of the amount of caffeine as a regular cup of coffee.

4. Coffee was the first food to be freeze-dried.
The process of freeze drying — when fresh foods are placed in a dryer where temperatures drop to negative 40 degrees F — first started during World War II to preserve foods.

5. There are two types of coffee beans: Arabica and Robusta.
Seventy percent of coffee beans are Arabica.
Although less popular, Robusta is slightly more bitter and has twice as much caffeine.

6. The majority of coffee is produced in Brazil.
Brazil produces 40% of the world's coffee, which is twice as much as 2nd and 3rd place holders, Colombia and Vietnam.

7. Hawaii is the only state in the U.S. that commercially grows coffee.
Kona coffee is the United States' gift to the coffee world.
Because coffee grows best in climates along the equator, Hawaii's weather is optimal for harvesting coffee beans.

8. Coffee was originally a food.
Coffee berries were mixed with fat to create an energy-rich snack ball. It was also consumed as a wine when made from the pulp of coffee berries.

9. Coffee is actually a fruit.
Coffee beans as we know them are the pits of a cherry-like berry that are grown on bushes.
Even though coffee is a seed, it's called a bean because of its resemblance to actual beans.

10. The world's most expensive coffee is $600 a pound.
And it comes from the feces of a Sumatran wild cat.
The animal — called a Luwak — is unable to digest coffee beans. In the process of digesting the beans, they are fermented in the stomach.
When the beans are excreted, they produce a smooth, chocolaty coffee.

11. There have been five attempts to ban coffee throughout history.
Coffee was first banned in Mecca in 1511 because leaders believed it stimulated radical thinking.
And, 16th century Italian clergymen tried to ban coffee because they believed it to be "satanic." However, Pope Clement VII loved coffee so much that he lifted the ban and had coffee baptized in 1600.
But Ottoman leader Murad IV took it even further when he ascended the throne in 1623 by creating the first punishments for drinking coffee, which included beatings and being thrown into the sea.

In 1746, the Swedish government made it illegal to even have coffee paraphernalia, including cups and dishes.
And finally, in 1777, Frederick the Great of Prussia issued a manifesto declaring beer's superiority over coffee because he believed it interfered with the country's beer consumption.

12. You can overdose on coffee.
However, you would need to drink over 100 cups to consume the lethal dose of caffeine.

13. New Yorkers drink almost seven times as much coffee as the rest of the U.S.
However, Finland is the most caffeinated country, where the average adult consumes the equivalent of four or five cups of coffee a day.

14. Coffee drinkers have a lower risk of Alzheimer's disease.
Researchers found that older patients with elevated levels of caffeine in their blood were more likely to avoid Alzheimer's.
Studies have also shown that caffeine has positive effects on type 2 diabetes and Parkinson's disease.

Coffee with added cream cools about 20% slower than plain black coffee.

16. But when you add milk, it weakens the effects of caffeine.
Our bodies absorb coffee much slower when it has added fat milk content, which decreases the stimulants.

A group of scientists reported that simply inhaling the aroma of coffee can alter the activity of some genes in the brain, reducing the effects of sleep deprivation.
And when you do drink that cup of coffee, caffeine reaches your blood fast, like 10 minutes fast.

21. Dark roast coffees have less caffeine than lighter roasts.
Even though the flavor is often stronger, roasting burns off some of the caffeine.

22. Decaf does not mean caffeine-free.
An eight-ounce brewed cup of decaf coffee has two-to-12 milligrams of caffeine.
In comparison, a regular cup of coffee has anywhere from 95 to 200 milligrams.
(Twelve ounces of coke only has 23-35 milligrams of caffeine.)

23. In the United States, 80% of adults consume caffeine every day.
According to the Food and Drug Administration, the average intake is 200 milligrams, or about two five-ounce cups of coffee.

Controversial Studies Suggest Coffee Drinkers Live Longer

Coffee drinkers, rejoice.
Two new studies are linking our favorite hot beverage to a decreased chance of being
killed by heart disease, cancer, a stroke, and more.
So, does this mean we can start drinking coffee with reckless abandon?
We spoke to the experts to find out, and not surprisingly, the answer is complicated.

People who drink coffee appear to live longer, according to a pair of studies published
today in the Annals of Internal Medicine.
The studies—which involved hundreds of thousands of participants across a diverse set
of ethnic groups—showed that folks who drink at least one cup of coffee a day were
12 percent less likely to die of diseases such as heart disease and cancer.
This effect jumped to 18 percent among people who consumed two to three cups per day.
Importantly, these associations held true for participants who drank either caffeinated or
decaffeinated coffee,
which would seem to imply that caffeine has nothing to do with it.

But to say that these studies close the case on coffee, so to speak, would be taking it too far.
The researchers weren’t able to identify a causal relationship, nor were they able to explain
why coffee appears to confer these health benefits.
And importantly, some experts are challenging the conclusions reached in these two studies,
saying the results were misleading, and that blanket statements about coffee consumption
ignore the fact that, for some, caffeine is dangerous.

Regardless, the new studies offer substantial findings given the stigma associated with coffee
consumption, and the fact that an estimated 2.25 billion cups of this delicious beverage are
consumed each day around the world.
Coffee has previously been linked to bladder cancer, increases in the risk of heart disease,
stomach ulcers, and heartburn—yet little evidence exists to support these largely debunked claims.
And in fact, quite the opposite appears to be the case.

One recent meta-study linked coffee consumption to a reduced risk of liver and uterine cancer.
Evidence is also mounting that coffee may protect against heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and Parkinson’s.
These findings sure seem promising, but skeptics have argued the jury’s still out on coffee, pointing to
deficiencies in the research methods, such as a focus on specific ethnicities, or failing to follow-up with study participants.
The two new analyses provide some of the most compelling evidence yet in support of coffee’s purported health aspects.

In the first study, a research team from the University of Southern California found that higher coffee
consumption was linked to lower risk for death in both white and non-white populations—an important
finding given that different ethnicities have different lifestyles and disease risks.
Coffee consumption amounting to two to three cups a day, for example,
was associated with a reduced risk of death due to heart disease (21 percent decrease),
cancer (8 percent decrease),
stroke (27 percent decrease),
diabetes (23 percent),
and respiratory (10 percent) and
kidney disease (41 percent).

Crucially, these findings were generalizable across cultures, including African-Americans, Japanese-Americans,
Native Hawaiians, Latinos, and whites.
Health effects were observed in all of ethnicities studied.

Data came from the Multiethnic Cohort Study, a collaborative effort between the University of Hawaii Cancer
Center and the Keck School of Medicine that involves more than 215,000 participants.
Every five years, participants fill out questionnaires about their diet and lifestyle, along with family and personal
medical history information.
The average follow-up period is 16 years.
When analyzing the data, the USC researchers adjusted for age, sex, ethnicity, smoking habits, education,
pre-existing disease, physical exercise, and alcohol consumption.

“This study is the largest of its kind and includes minorities who have very different lifestyles,” said Veronica Setiawan,
lead author of the study, in a statement.
“Seeing a similar pattern across different populations gives stronger biological backing to the argument that coffee is
good for you whether you are white, African-American, Latino or Asian.”

Among coffee drinkers, reduced mortality rates were present regardless of whether participants drank caffeinated or
decaffeinated coffee.
So, whatever is causing the added longevity appears to have nothing to do with caffeine.

Or should I really call it a lapghan?
It is only made for one person to sit and cuddle up underneath.
Someday I will venture into making a bigger one, but seeing that this one took me a month to make.... I can't imagine a bigger one!

But... IT'S FINISHED!!!!!! I am so happy and so excited for how this turned out!

The original pattern came from here. But modifications had to be made on it. Either my stitches were off, or I just made grannies different than they do.
I just couldn't figure out for the life of me how the pattern could only go so many sts across.

I started with a row of "green grannies" in the middle.
I then worked the rows off each side in a symmetrical pattern.
Attached the two rows of "beige grannies", continued working on both ends until I attached a new row of "green grannies" and finished off both ends.

Grannies and Ripples Afghan
You'll need: worsted weight yarn or various colors, size H (5mm) crochet hook, yarn needle to sew together the grannies to the blanket.
Gauge is not critical for this project.

Granny Square Strip:

First Granny Square

To Start: ch 4; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), 2 dc in ring, [ch 1, 3 dc in ring] 3 times, ch 1; join with sl st in top of beginning ch—12 dc and 4 ch-1 sps. Fasten off.
Round 2: Join with sl st in any ch-1 sp, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in same ch-1 sp,

Make and join more granny squares in this manner, making a strip of how many granny squares long that you'd want it.

Work on one side of the granny, then when it's at a desired length, work the same amount of rows on the other side.
To Start: With RS one granny square strip #1 facing, join with sl st in corner ch-1 sp beginning of first full granny square, to work across top of strip from first
full granny square across to half granny square.
Row 1: Ch 3, dc3tog over next 2 dc, *dc in next 13 dc, 5 dc in next ch-1 sp ("peak"), dc in next 13 dc, dc5tog over next 5 sts ("valley" -
the next 5 sts will be 2 dc, the join between 2 squares, and the next 2 dc); repeat from
* across to last slope down, dc in last 13 dc, dc3tog, dc in next dc, turn.
Row 2: Ch 3, dc3tog, dc in next 13 dc, *5 dc in next dc, dc in next 13 dc, dc5tog over next 5 dc, dc in next 13 dc; repeat from
* across to last 4 sts, dc3tog over next 3 sts, dc in top of turning ch, turn.

Continue working the same row pattern until desired length. Work on both sides of this granny strip.

When you're ready to add another granny strip, work in the same fashion as the granny strip above.
You'll have to add on half grannies to each end of the strip to fill voids.

Half Granny Square
To Start: ch 4; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Row 1: Ch 4 (counts as dc, ch 1 here and throughout), (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in ring (corner made), ch 1,
dc in ring; do not join—1 corner, and 1 ch-1 sp and 1 dc on each side of corner. Fasten off.
Row 2: Join with sl st in 3rd ch of beginning ch-4, ch 4, 3 dc in beginning ch-sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in last ch-1 sp, ch 1, dc in last dc—1 corner,

Once your new granny strip is attached, you may begin adding a new ripple row.

Ripple Pattern #2

To Start: With RS one granny square strip #2 facing, join with sl st in first dc at top of half granny square.
Row 1: Ch 3, 3 dc in same sp, dc in next 13 dc,
*dc5tog over next 5 sts ("valley" – the next 5 sts will be 2 dc, join between squares, and next 2 dc), dc in next 13 dc,
5 dc in next ch-1 sp ("peak"), dc in next 13 dc; repeat from
* across, 3 dc in same sp, dc in last ch-1 sp, turn.
Row 2: Ch 3, 3 dc in next dc,
*dc in next 13 dc, 5 dc in next ch-1 sp, dc in next 13 dc, dc5tog over next 5 sts; repeat from
* across, 3 dc in next dc, dc in last ch-1 sp, turn.

Continue attaching rows of grannies and rows of ripples until your afghan is at a desired length.

Edging {If desired - I did not, only because I ran out of the color yarn I wanted to use, and didn't want to buy a whole skein just for the edging}

Poeierhol. Dis nou ‘n oulike woord wat vandag sy weg tot by my gevind het.
Dit word gebruik om ‘n aanstellerige persoon te beskryf.
Julle almal weet waarvan ek praat: daardie mense wat dink hulle poep parfuum… duur, ingevoerde, eau de parfum.

Die manne wat staan met ‘n Heineken in die hand om die braaivleisvuur, want Black Label
is mos kommin en nes die klein tekentjie van ‘n mannetjie op ‘n perd op sy bors, moet die
bier in sy hand ook die finansiële klem op sy welvaart lê.
Hulle is selferkende boerseuns, maar dra net Guess en Polo hempies.
Die huis op die gholflandgoed is eintlik net vir sekuriteit, want hy is so
besig dat hy lanklaas sy TaylorMade drywer gaan swaai het.
Hy het nog nie eers die Tiger Woods putter, wat hy laasjaar ingevoer het, gebruik nie.

einde van hul eerste week op aarde sien dat die kind talentvol en slim gaan wees. Nou goed… ek hou ook van my klein luukses.
Ek bederf my soms met ‘n lekker handeroom of duur parfuum, maar dit beteken nie dat ek nie
kaalvoet en bra-loos in die sitkamer kan lê en Lays vreet uit die pak nie.
Ek hou ook van ‘n mooi glas, ‘n blink dingetjie in die oor en ‘n komper wat my kop verstaan,
maar helaas, drink ek ook kondensmelk uit die blikkie uit, lek ek ook die lepel af voor ek die
pot roer en vloek ek te veel. Ek is eerder kommin as ‘n poeierhol.

Tyd vir aansit en fiemies het ek nie.
Ek is wie ek is.
Ek hou van wie ek is.
En basta met die res.

Liewe snob, as u egter weer op die troon gaan sit om Candy Crush op jou IPhone te speel of
die De Kat te lees, onthou tog maar dat ek weet dat u nie regtig u neus daarbinne poeier nie.
Jou toilet is dalk van diamante en goud gesmee, maar eindelik gaan jy nes die res van ons… stink.

A new island that has appeared off the coast of North Carolina is exciting water-loving locals and tourists alike.

It's being called Shelly Island.
And thanks to the changing tides of the Atlantic Ocean, those enjoying Cape Hatteras' Cape Point can now trek to this newly formed island.

"It's a dynamic area. Because of the two different currents -- the Gulf Stream and the Labrador Current -- the sand is always shifting and moving,
" Mark Dowdle, the deputy superintendent of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, which oversees the island, told ABC News.

"A large sandbar has formed off the tip of Cape Point and essentially created a new island," he added.
"It could continue to grow or soon it could be completely gone. We don’t know."

For now, those visiting have been enjoying the new island, which measures about a mile long and several hundred yards wide, according to Dowdle.

Those visiting have been collecting sea shells along with enjoying long walks on the beach.

Bill Smith recently used a kayak to trek to the island.

"It's fun to go out there. It's a great place to shell," Smith, the president of the North Carolina Beach Buggy Association, told ABC News.
"Historically, that area is a very good place to fish too."

Still, Smith warns that because of that, it's probably not best to walk over to the island at low tide when the water may appear shallow.

In fact, the park service has several warnings for those trying to enjoy the long summer days on the new island.

"If someone were to go out there, use the buddy system. Do not go alone," Dowdle said, noting that the water is particularly
rough near the island thanks to strong currents and riptides.

He added that if you do attempt to swim out there, use flotation devices such as paddle boards or surfboards along with a life jacket.

Dowdle continued that there could be various "marine life," such as jellyfish.
"There could be other marine life too and because the water's agitated from the waves, you can't always see."

Dowdle had one more piece of advice he'd like to give to those visiting. "The island is new and it’s drawing a lot of interest ...
but there are many other beaches to enjoy at Cape Hatteras including three life-guarded beaches," he told ABC News.
