Dear Brother,

As you know, the Epsilon Mu Chapter House was built in the 1950s. Since the 1970's very little capital investment has been made in the structure. From 1973 until 2003 no capital campaigns were conducted. This trend was reversed in 2002. Initially, the investment was small. New couches in the living and TV room and a lawn sprinkler system. In 2003 a capital campaign was commenced. Approximately $135,000 was raised and invested in the Chapter House. We installed a sprinkler and integrated smoke detection system, remodeled the showers and bathroom upstairs, replaced the floors throughout the first floor, repaired extensive wood rot on the exterior, repainted the exterior trim, and installed a new roof.

	Dear Family, Friends and Alumni

Each year, as part of our core principles of Leadership, Fellowship, Scholarship, and Service, the men of Kappa Sigma host a fun filled week of fundraising benefiting a deserving charity. We call this week the Kappa Sigma Olympics, and this year it will benefit the Little Light House of Tulsa.

The Little Light House has been serving children since 1972. The Christian organization provides specialized educational and therapeutic services to special needs children through the age of six. What makes the Little Light House truly special is the fact that the charity provides all of its services tuition free. Moreover, as a 501 C3 organization the Little Light House takes no state or federal funds.

Our week consists of multiple events and begins on April 11, continuing until April 17. On Monday we host an all you can eat dinner with all proceeds going directly to the Little Light House. We will visit the Little Light House in person on Tuesday to directly interact with the special needs children. Thursday will host a special brotherhood event. And, on Saturday we hold a series of “Olympic” sporting events followed by our famous dance competition. Throughout the week we will rely on the assistance of the campus community; but more importantly we rely on you, our friends, family and alumni, to make the week a success.

Although we raise money through all of the aforementioned activities, we also hope to raise significant funds by selling raffle tickets from now until April 17. Several runners up will win small gift cards. The second place winner will receive $500 in savings bonds. And, the first place prize is a 46” 1080p HDTV. All prizes have either been donated or paid for in full by the Kappa Sigma fraternity. Proceeds from ticket sales go directly to the Little Light House. We would really like your support in our efforts to help this wonderful cause. Tickets cost one dollar, but are discounted in bulk.
You can purchase tickets below:

	Brothers,

I am very happy to announce that the Epsilon Mu chapter has returned to the rolls of FACE award recipients. It was made possible through the hard work of our outgoing officers and incoming officers focusing on the different elements to ensure our success. We also have to thank Brother Rick Kelly, the AA who spent countless hours testing brothers for ritual proficiency and the many other things he does for our chapter.

The FACE award recognizes Kappa Sigma's top chapters who excel in rush, community service, grades, and leadership. I spoke with our current GM, Brother Daniel Tarr who indicated they are already planning on what they can do this next year to ensure another FACE award and many others!

Congratulations to our hard working undergraduates-- we have a lot to be proud of!
Brothers,

I wanted to let everyone know what Kappa Sigma plans for homecoming 2009. Kappa Sigma will have a golf tournament on Friday October 30th. KE alumni Walt Petitt is putting Friday's golf together. You will be informed about location and start time as soon as we have it completed. This year's game is Saturday, October 31st at 2:00 PM. We will have a BBQ at 12:00 noon at the Kappa Sigma Fraternity house. It will be sponsored by the Bologna Society. Hotel rooms will go fast. I suggest you call the Double Tree at 61st and Yale and reserve your rooms now.

I would like to get an idea of how many alumni and family will be attending the BBQ at the Kappa Sigma house at noon on Saturday the 31st. It will help me plan the food and drink purchase.

Please respond to Rob Souzzi at robsuozzi@aol.com.

If you plan on playing golf you can reach Walt Petitt at his E mail: walt.petitt@rcbins.com

The coin displays the Star and Crescent on a red back round. The reverse side reads the 67th Biennial Grand Conclave, San Antonio, Texas and has past SEC members on a green back round. The coin is raised and has a nice weight. All raised portions are in gold. The crest is all gold and displays the keys, skull, bones and swords. The star is white and has red and green ruby colored points around KE with a black back round. The coin is dated 1869 to 2009. This is a must for every Kappa Sigma and makes a great collectible. Every Kappa Sigma alumni that has seen the coin has asked me for one. There are only 150 coins to be given away.

	Brothers:

It is my esteemed privilege to report that the Epsilon-Mu Chapter of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity has yet again dominated formal recruitment at The University of Tulsa. This afternoon, 31 young men have accepted bid invitations to join Kappa Sigma and continue to make Epsilon-Mu the largest Greek organization at TU. This marks the SIXTH consecutive year that Kappa Sigma has had the largest pledge class on fraternity row. We have continued to build upon the solid foundation that has allowed us to be at the pinnacle of Greek Life at Tulsa. No fraternity at TU comes close to matching the size of Kappa Sigma.

Within the class of 31 men, two are Epsilon-Mu legacies: Joey Moppert, son of Phil Moppert (initiated in 1971); and Luke Weitkemper, brother of Sam Weitkemper (class of 2010).

The breakdown of the rest of the fraternities at TU are: Pi Kappa Alpha - 23, Sigma Chi - 21, Kappa Alpha - 13, and Lambda Chi Alpha - 12.

Thanks for your continued support and more great news is to come soon!

Walt Pettit organized his umpteenth golf tournament and we had a great time. The actives had the house looking terrific and put in a lot of time setting up and breaking down. It is a good thing to get back in touch with those who have followed the same path. I am grateful to all those who participated in these events.
Brothers,

Buy now you should have received the end of the year holiday E-mail from the University of Tulsa. It explains that you can donate your tax deductible contribution to the University of Tulsa. If you would like your tax deductible donation to be passed on to the Kappa Sigma Fraternity at Tulsa just earmark it for Kappa Sigma and all the funds you donate will be put into a special fund for use at the Kappa Sigma house. It is a great way of donating to the University and having the local chapter benefit. This has not replaced the Bologna Society.

You can still go on line at www.epsilonmu.org and donate to the Bologna Society.

 Brothers:

I am glad to announce a reception honoring Epsilon Mu Alumni Roger “The Jet” Jarvis (’72) and his wife Jamie will be held at the Epsilon Mu Chapter House on April 22st, 2010 from 2:30 – 4:00 p.m. in recognition of his induction into the University of Tulsa Engineering Hall of Fame. Refreshments will be provided. You are invited to attend and see our friend and brother. So you can catch up on Roger’s recent accomplishments, the following is a short summary of recent work:

	Roger Jarvis (BSPE ’76)

Entrepreneur Roger Jarvis (BSPE ’76) has an exploration track record that is the envy of the energy industry. In 2001, Ernst & Young named Jarvis its Entrepreneur of the Year for his three successful start-ups to that point. In May, of the same year, Worth named him as one of the nation’s top 50 public CEO’s while running his then-current company Spinnaker Exploration and in 2005 Jarvis completed a sale of Spinnaker to Norwegian major Norsk-Hydro for $2.6 billion.

Graduating from The University of Tulsa in 1976 with a petroleum engineering degree; Jarvis enjoyed his first success – good timing – and received more than 20 job offers from a then talent-short oil and gas industry. At 22 years old, he joined Amoco (Standard of Indiana) in the Denver division. With the Overthrust Belt in its infancy and activity at a cyclic peak; Jarvis received great experience and exposure early in his career. At 25 years old, he struck out on his own, co-founding the first of four successful oil and gas start-ups.

As CEO of King Ranch from 1988 to 1995, he guided the turnaround of the 150-year-old Texas institution’s oil and gas business and was the architect of strategies that helped expand, integrate and improve its operations in everything from cattle to farming to real estate. During his tenure there, King Ranch became the largest producer of citrus, cotton and fine grains in the United States while continuing its tradition as the nation’s largest beef operation.

In 1997, Jarvis founded Spinnaker, an independent exploration company on the concept that huge new volumes of three-dimensional seismic data would change the way successful independent oil and gas companies would explore in the Gulf of Mexico. Jarvis’s emphasis on technology and integrated analysis led to Spinnaker’s assemblage of one of the finest technical staffs in the region and to an impressive track record: 90 oil and gas discoveries in eight years; an average of nearly one discovery per month. Powered by its decisive information advantage, Spinnaker built interests in 1.5 million acres – much of which was in the prolific deep water plays and held the highest ratio of assets to employees of any company listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 2005. In that same year, Norsk Hydro bought Spinnaker for $2.6 billion.

Jarvis’s entrepreneurial drive is now behind Common Resources, which has quickly become one of the most successful independents in the domestic gas shale plays. Common Resources was one of the first companies to be active in the Haynesville Shale; extending the play a distance of 75 miles to include the Shelby Trough of East Texas. In less than one year after that dramatic success, Common helped open the Hawkville field in the Eagle Ford shale of south Texas. That play is now one of America’s fastest growing and most economic and Common’s appears very well positioned.

SAN ANTONIO, TX July 26, 2009 This past weekend at the 67th Biennial Grand Conclave of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity, the Epsilon-Mu Chapter at The University of Tulsa was recognized as being one of the top chapters nationally within the Fraternity. The Founders Award for Chapter Excellence (FACE) is the benchmark award in Kappa Sigma and recognizes outstanding chapter management, achievement, and program development in all areas of operation. Since the awards inception in the late 1980s, Epsilon-Mu has won a total of 18 FACE awards which is the most held by any chapter in the nation. This is the second consecutive year the chapter has won this prestigious award.

Along with the FACE award, Epsilon-Mu returns to Tulsa with six additional awards. The last time the chapter won this many awards at Conclave was 2004. Past Grand Master Max Hogan was recognized as an Outstanding Grand Master for his two terms of service in that position. Current Grand Procurator Tyler Caldwell was acknowledged as an Outstanding Grand Procurator. Tyler has served in that position for two terms so far and begins his third term this fall. Epsilon-Mu received a Champion Quest Recognition Award for being the largest fraternity at The University of Tulsa and for its recruitment results this past year, including the fifth consecutive year of having the largest fall recruitment class.

Two awards were won for Epsilon-Mus communication programs. The Outstanding Communication Program Award recognizes chapters that excel in all areas of communication with the chapter members, alumni, parents, and the university. The Outstanding Single Communication Award was received for the monthly newsletter published by the chapter for its past alumni and parents. This is the second time Epsilon-Mu has won this award for their newsletter.

The final award received named Epsilon-Mu as One of Jacksons Chapters for the number of contributions received by the Kappa Sigma Endowment Fund from members of the chapter. The award is named for Steven Alonzo Jackson who is credited with creating many of the programs that launched the Fraternity into the twentieth century. Each member who has contributed at least $1,000 to the Kappa Sigma Endowment Fund is credited as being One of Jacksons Men and because of the large number of these donors, the chapter received the award.

One of the greatest achievements for Epsilon-Mu though during the Grand Conclave was the election of Brother Hugh M. Robert to the Kappa Sigma Supreme Executive Committee as the Worthy Grand Master of Ceremonies. Brother Robert is the first Epsilon-Mu initiate to be named to the SEC and will serve in this position for the next two years. Brother Robert was joined by ten members of Epsilon-Mu to celebrate his achievement at the Kappa Sigmas Finest Hour banquet.
