Thanks to all our Fort Worth and North Texas members who emailed Mayor Moncrief and all Fort Worth City Council Members to request an independent investigation of the raid by Fort Worth Police and TABC officers. Equality Texas members and supporters have sent thousands of letters to the Mayor and City Council Members.

Next Steps: With the Fort Worth Police Department and TABC conducting internal investigations of the raid on Sunday, June 28, 2009, and Mayor Moncrief asking the US Attorney to review the police investigation, it is critical that citizens of Fort Worth continue to demand a separate and independent investigation.

We are asking our Fort Worth and Tarrant County members, families, and friends to attend the Fort Worth City Council Meeting on Tuesday, July 14th. We need a show of support and solidarity from the Fort Worth/Tarrant County community to demand accountability and action.

Action: Show up to support the call for an independent investigation of the Fort Worth Police Department's Raid on the Rainbow Lounge.

Arrive by 6:00 pm to secure a seat or standing room.

Dress appropriately for a city council meeting.

Look for organizers wearing "Fairness Fort Worth" t-shirts or buttons. They will ask you to sign in with them.

It will be a long evening as there are 77 agenda items. Be prepared. "Fairness Fort Worth" spokesperson Jon Nelson is scheduled to speak under the "Public Comment" part of the agenda. (With respect to parents wishing to bring their children, please arrive and stay for the first hour or so and then leave if children need to eat or go to bed.)
It will not be required or necessary for everyone to speak, but it is important to have a large number of supporters present. We encourage families, parents, friends, faith leaders, and straight allies to attend to reflect the diversity of support.

As a Fort Worth constituent and citizen, your presence alone will affirm to Mayor Moncrief and to each City Council Member that you are concerned about your community and that you want action.

YOU make equality happen!

We will continue to update you on events and plans. Please visit our website and blog at www.equalitytexas.org.

We thank all of the activists and supporters in North Texas that are on the ground demanding action!

<ga:textBody>Equality Texas Releases Statement of Senator Wendy Davis and Representative Lon Burnam on Rainbow Lounge Raid

Equality Texas has been working with Fort Worth activists and elected officials, and community, state and national leaders to ensure that a complete, accurate, and honest review takes place of the actions of the Fort Worth Police Department and the Texas Alcoholic and Beverage Commission before, during and after the Saturday night raid on the Rainbow Lounge in Fort Worth.

Texas State Senator Wendy Davis and Representative Lon Burnam have met with representatives of the TABC regarding this raid and have prepared a joint statement concerning the raid and that meeting. As a courtesy to our members and a recognition of the importance of the GLBT community, Senator Davis and Representative Burnam, have asked Equality Texas to release their joint statement to our members prior to its release to the press.

Their joint statement is below:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CONTACT: Bernie Scheffler

July 1, 2009 512.463.0110

Today State Senator Wendy R. Davis and State Representative Lon Burnam issued the following joint statement.

From: State Senator Wendy Davis and State Representative Lon Burnam

Re: Incident at Rainbow Lounge, 651 Jennings Ave., Fort Worth on June 28, 2009

We want to provide you with an update of our response to concerns raised about the actions taken by City of Fort Worth Police officers and Texas Alcohol and Beverage Commission agents on the early morning of June 28, 2009 at the Rainbow Lounge, which is located in the Fort Worth portion of the districts that we represent. We are deeply concerned about eye witness accounts of the events that occurred that morning and intend to activate all possible investigatory methods to learn the truth about those events.

As part of learning as much information as possible about the incident at issue, we requested a meeting with Texas Alcohol and Beverage Commission. As a consequence of that request, today we met with TABC representatives Joel Moreno, Chief of Field Operations, and Carolyn Beck, Public Information Officer. In that meeting, we made a very detailed request for information regarding the factual events that occurred at the Rainbow Lounge on both June 25, 2009, when TABC agents first conducted investigation activity at that location, and on June 28, 2009, when TABC agents returned to that location. Additionally, we requested detailed information with regard to the TABC agents' compliance or non-compliance with procedures and policies of TABC as those are expressed in the TABC Enforcement Division Policy, Procedures &amp; Forms manual.

It is our hope that through a thorough investigation and analysis of the events that occurred at the Rainbow Lounge, particularly in the early morning hours of June 28, our community and those outside our community who have raised concerns, will be able to get the answers they need to their valid questions. Most importantly, Chad Gibson and his family, for whom we are deeply concerned, deserve answers.

To that end, we intend to make a written request to TABC for answers to the questions raised in the meeting that we held today. Tomorrow, we will issue a joint letter detailing that request.

Additionally, in order to assure that we and the community at large receive the answers deserved regarding the events of that morning, it is our hope that an objective, outside investigation be made which would examine internal investigation reports of both the Fort Worth Police Department and the TABC, as well as eye witness accounts. Through such an independent review, truth will be best assured. Our community deserves to know whether unacceptable actions were taken at the Rainbow Lounge, and, to the extent they did, that the persons responsible for those actions will be held accountable.

###

We appreciate their work and concern on this issue, and we continue to ask for an immediate independent and public investigation of the raid on Rainbow Lounge.

Continue to Ask City Officials for an Independent Investigation

Background: Late Saturday evening, June 27th, Fort Worth Police Officers and Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC) officers entered into the Rainbow Lounge in Fort Worth for an alcoholic beverage code inspection. What resulted was the arrest of seven (7) patrons, one being critically injured during the raid.

With the raid happening on the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Riot, we are reminded that we need to advocate for the equal treatment of all citizens and this case, we call for an immediate and public investigation into the circumstances surrounding this raid, including the apparent large number of police and TABC officers and paddy wagon. With one patron currently in ICU as a result of injuries sustained during the raid and arrest, the investigation needs to cover the use of excessive force and whether these injuries were the result of excessive force or were incidental to the arrest.

Paul E. Scott, Executive Director

YOU make equality happen!

Continue to Ask City Officials for an Independent Investigation

Equality Texas has called on its North Texas members and supporters to contact Mayor Moncrief and the Fort Worth City Council Members to demand an immediate and independent investigation.

If you have not participated, go to www.equalitytexas.org and click on Advocacy Campaigns. (http://eqfed.org/campaign/Investigate_RainbowLounge_Raid)

We will continue to update our members. Please visit our website and blog at www.equalitytexas.org.

We thank all of the activists and supporters in North Texas that are on the ground making demanding action!

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Chad Gibson and the supporters who will honor him this evening at the Candlelight Vigil at Rainbow Lounge.</ga:textBody>

Fort Worth on June 28, 2009</P>
<P align=left>We want to provide you with an update of our
response to concerns raised about the actions taken by City of
Fort Worth Police officers and Texas Alcohol and Beverage
Commission agents on the early morning of June 28, 2009 at the
Rainbow Lounge, which is located in the Fort Worth portion of
the districts that we represent.&nbsp; We are deeply concerned
about eye witness accounts of the events that occurred that
morning and intend to activate all possible investigatory
methods to learn the truth about those events.</P>
<P align=left>As part of learning as much information as
possible about the incident at issue, we requested a meeting
with Texas Alcohol and Beverage Commission.&nbsp; As a
consequence of that request, today we met with TABC
representatives&nbsp; Joel Moreno, Chief of Field Operations,
and Carolyn Beck, Public Information Officer.&nbsp; In that
meeting, we made a very detailed request for information
regarding the factual events that occurred at the Rainbow Lounge
on both June 25, 2009, when TABC agents first conducted
investigation activity at that location, and on June 28, 2009,
when TABC agents returned to that location.&nbsp; Additionally,
we requested detailed information with regard to the TABC
agents' compliance or non-compliance with procedures and
policies of TABC as those are expressed in the TABC Enforcement
Division Policy, Procedures &amp; Forms manual.</P>
<P align=left>It is our hope that through a thorough
investigation and analysis of the events that occurred at the
Rainbow Lounge, particularly in the early morning hours of June
28, our community and those outside our community who have
raised concerns, will be able to get the answers they need to
their valid questions.&nbsp; Most importantly, Chad Gibson and
his family, for whom we are deeply concerned, deserve
answers.</P>
<P align=left>To that end, we intend to make a written request
to TABC for answers to the questions raised in the meeting that
we held today.&nbsp; Tomorrow, we will issue a joint letter
detailing that request.</P>
<P align=left>Additionally, in order to assure that we and the
community at large receive the answers deserved regarding the
events of that morning, it is our hope that an objective,
outside investigation be made which would examine internal
investigation reports of both the Fort Worth Police Department
and the TABC, as well as eye witness accounts.&nbsp; Through
such an independent review, truth will be best assured.&nbsp;
Our community deserves to know whether unacceptable actions were
taken at the Rainbow Lounge, and, to the extent they did, that
the persons responsible for those actions will be held
accountable.</P>
<P align=center>###</P>
<P align=left>We appreciate their work and concern on this
issue, and we continue to ask for an immediate independent and
public investigation of the raid on Rainbow Lounge.&nbsp; </P>

<ga:textBody>Equality Texas Calls on Fort Worth Members and Supporters to contact Mayor Moncrief and Fort Worth City Council Members for Immediate Investigation of Rainbow Lounge Raid on Saturday, June 27th.

We ask Mayor Moncrief and all Fort Worth City Council Members to request a Public Investigation and to make a public statement. City Council member Joel Burns, District 9, has already issued a joint statement requesting an investigation. Statement on Equality Texas Blog HERE - http://equalitytexas.typepad.com/blog/2009/06/fort-worth-rainbow-lounge-raid-time-to-act-is-now.html and below. Equality Texas is in contact with Representative Lon Burnam's and Senator Wendy Davis' offices, and they have scheduled meetings with TABC to address these issues as well.

Fort Worth City Council Member - Joel Burns - District 9 - Statement

"I want all citizens of Texas and Fort Worth to know and be assured that the laws and ordinances of our great State and City will be applied fairly, equally and without malice or selective enforcement. I consider this to be part of "The Fort Worth Way" here. As an elected representative of the city of Fort Worth, I am calling for an immediate and thorough investigation of the actions of the City of Fort Worth Police and Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission in relation to the incident at the Rainbow Lounge earlier this morning, June 28, 2009.

It is unfortunate that this incident occurred in Fort Worth and even more so to have occurred on the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall protests. Unlike 40 years ago, though, the people of this community have elective representation that will make sure our government is accountable and that the rights of all of its citizens are protected. We are working together with our Mayor, Police Chief, the City of Fort Worth Human Relations Commission, and our State Legislative colleagues to get a complete and accurate accounting of what occurred.

Rest assured that neither the people of Fort Worth, nor the city government of Fort Worth, will tolerate discrimination against any of its citizens. And know that the GLBT Community is an integral part of the economic and cultural life of Fort Worth.

Every Fort Worth citizen deserves to have questions around this incident answered and I am working aggressively toward that end."</ga:textBody>

<ga:subjectLine>Going to Dallas Black Tie? - How You Can Help Equality Texas Foundation</ga:subjectLine>
<ga:textBody>Equality Texas Foundation 2009 Beneficiary of Black Tie Dinner, October 3rd

NEW TABLE SELECTION PROCESS - Black Tie Dinner Table Selection Process Changes - Moves ONLINE Today - June 15th

Volunteer for Black Tie Dinner on October 3-4, 2009

Equality Texas Foundation's Programs and Outreach Benefit from Black Tie Dinner (http://blacktiedinner.org/).

Equality Texas Foundation is once again a beneficiary of the Black Tie Dinner that supports 18 local beneficiaries and HRC, its national beneficiary.

The support from Black Tie Dinner is instrumental in continuing our work in North Texas with our Equality Project trainings, Pride in Faith programs, and our collaborative work to educate Texans about the critical importance of education and advocacy to achieve equality in Dallas, Fort Worth, Plano, Denton, and across the entire state.

If you attend Black Tie or know someone that does, then you can directly impact the work of Equality Texas Foundation as we continue to expand our outreach and make equality happen here in Texas!

Simply, being a table captain for Equality Texas Foundation or designating your table and its seats means that your locally designated funds will support our mission directly. We could not continue to do our work without your support and the support of Black Tie Dinner.

Thank you for being a table captain. Please let us know if you intend to intend to be a table captain for us or if you intend to designate your seats to Equality Texas Foundation - HERE - http://eqfed.org/eqtx/events/blacktiedinner_2009/details.tcl

Black Tie Dinner Table Selection Moves Online June 15, 2009 as new process implemented.

The 2009 Online TABLE CAPTAIN Process launches Monday, June 15, at 10:00 am. Table Captains register by creating a log-in account and either they, or their guests, can make payment for their seats or the full table through the secure online system.
Table Selection Site - https://tables.blacktie.org/Login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fdefault.aspx

As in the past, the number of Table Captain tables is subject to availability. The key difference this year is that Table Captain table selection is based on the table payment completion date*; and as in prior years, after Sponsor table selection. Table Captains are encouraged to register and organize their tables quickly to obtain the best table selection position available.

Table Selection Information - http://www.blacktie.org/content.asp?id1=Table+Captains

Send email invitations to your guests and have them purchase their ticket directly online OR
Pay for your table in full when you logon. Note: Once paid in full, your position to secure your table is established.

Don't want to pay for your table online? You can fax and/or mail your completed forms with payment to 214.279.7557 or BTD, 3878 Oak Lawn Ste 100B #321, Dallas, TX 75219. Time and date on fax or postmark will be considered in the payment in full process.

By late August, Table Captains who have completed this process and paid in full will be notified by email to begin table selection process after the Sponsor Table Selection process is complete. Tickets will be mailed by September 7, 2009.

Equality Texas Foundation educates and engages the public about policies and their effect on Texans of all sexual orientations and gender identities and expressions.

Volunteer For Black Tie Dinner on October 3rd or 4th

All beneficiaries are required to provide volunteers for the event to qualify to be eligible for funds raised at the Dinner.

These much-needed funds are used to conduct research, educate Texans about issues of equality, and to coordinate efforts of LGBT and allied organizations across the state.

Sign up now and we'll contact you about specific shift times and the different duties before, after, and during the dinner.

SIGN UP NOW - http://eqfed.org/eqtx/events/btdvolsignup_October3_2009/details.tcl

There are a number of different ways to help:

Early set-up during the day on Saturday before the dinner;
During the event auction assistants and greeters are needed;
After-party monitors (for the night owls!);
Day-after (Sunday) office assistance is needed.

Many LGBT organizations in Texas rely on the funds generated by the Black Tie Dinner, and the Dinner relies on dedicated volunteers to successfully generate these funds. Your help is needed! Sign up - http://eqfed.org/eqtx/events/btdvolsignup_October3_2009/details.tcl

A volunteer orientation for the dinner will be held the week of the event. All volunteers are strongly encouraged to attend this meeting to get a general overview of their responsibilities/obligations. Please email EvaLe@equalitytexas.org for location and directions. (Orientation Date will be posted when it is announced by Black Tie Dinner Committee.)</ga:textBody>

2009 Pride Texas Sunrise Brunch
This Sunday, June 7, 2009 at 11:30am
Chateau Bellevue at the Austin Women's Club
708 San Antonio Street, Austin
----------
Presentation of Equality Leadership Award to Mason Marriott-Voss
Mason Marriott-Voss is a young activist known for his strong voice and leadership on many social justice issues. Most striking is that he is only 10 years old and already made an impact on the equality movement.

Mason first appeared at a legislative committee hearing when he was an infant, spoke at a rally at the Capitol when he was four, and this spring addressed a crowd of 3,000 at Austin City Hall to protest California's Proposition 8.

During this Legislative Session, Mason testified before the House Committee on Public Health in support of HB 2080, which would provide for accurate birth certificates for children with same-sex parents.

The Equality Leadership Award is given to Mason for his outstanding and courageous activism on behalf of equal rights.
-----------
Remarks on the 81st Legislative Session

Rep. Elliott Naishtat was elected to the District 49 seat in November, 1990. He has been re-elected eight times and serves as a member of the Human Services Committee and the County Affairs Committee.

Representative Naishtat carried HB 861 this session which would provide competitive benefit plans for faculty and staff of the University of Texas and Texas A&amp;M systems.

Rep. Mark Strama was elected to the District 50 seat in 2004. He serves on the Technology, Economic Development and Workforce Committee.

Representative Strama was the author of HB 1323 -Anti-Bullying and Harassment Bill - that defined cyber bullying and provided for the reporting of incidents by school districts, including incidents based on sexual orientation and gender identity/expression.
-----------------------
Keynote Address by the Honorable Annise Parker

This year we are honored to have Annise Parker, Houston City Controller and Houston Mayoral Candidate as our keynote speaker. Before her election as City Controller, Ms. Parker served six years as a Houston City Councilmember, improving city government and focusing on quality of life issues. She distinguished herself by creating Houston's $20 million Rainy Day Fund, imposing tighter regulations for inner city development and establishing Houston's non-discrimination policy.

CA Supreme Court Rules on Constitutionality of Prop 8

Also Rules on Validity of Marriages Performed from June through November 2008

Austin, Texas (May 26, 2009) - The California Supreme Court today issued its decision on the constitutionality of Proposition 8, the November 2008 ballot measure that rescinded marriage equality in California. The Court ruled that Proposition 8 is constitutional, while also upholding the validity of approximately 18,000 marriages of same-sex couples performed between June and November, 2008.

Equality Texas will participate Wednesday morning in a briefing hosted by Equality California and the National Center for Lesbian Rights to discuss the effect of the court's ruling on Californians and possible next steps to reinstate marriage equality in California.

What is the impact of the California ruling on Texas law? The ruling has absolutely no effect on Texas law. California is no longer a leader on the issue of marriage equality. Despite this ruling, the tide is turning across the country as more and more states provide equal access to marriage. At the time of the ballot measure on Proposition 8, California and Massachusetts were the only states to allow equal access to marriage. Iowa, Connecticut, Vermont and Maine now provide for marriage equality, and lawmakers in New York, New Jersey, and New Hampshire are considering marriage equality legislation.

"We will support our friends in California when they go back to the ballot to overturn Proposition 8," said Paul Scott, Equality Texas Executive Director. "We know they will ultimately be successful because more people now understand how harmful it is to take away equal rights from families," Scott added.

With six (6) days left in the 81st Regular Session, Equality Texas remains focused on the Texas Legislature. "All politics is local," said Paul Scott. "Our legislators care not about San Francisco, but about San Antonio. They care not about Fresno, but about Los Fresnos. We have had a very successful legislative session - with zero anti-equality bills and 17 pro-equality bills filed. But, there is so much more work to be done in Texas. If people want to get teed off about the California decision, I would ask them to get more involved in Equality Texas and our efforts to win equal treatment under the law in Texas," Scott concluded.

Groups around the state have planned "Day of Decision" events in Austin, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. Additional information about these events is available at http://www.dayofdecision.com/

Equality Texas advocates and lobbies for the elimination of discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity/expression. Equality Texas envisions a state where all Texans are treated equally, with dignity and respect.
