Today’s painting is “Winter day’s work” 5 x 7 Watercolor $50.00. The first inquiry to my email debflood@debfloodart.com gets first dibs on this Very Special Painting!

Why is this painting so special you ask? It just so happens to be my Studio Holiday Postcard image for this year! This wonderful reference image hails from my archived photo files from the local horse shows. Hey, can you see the wrap of bullets around the withers of the horse? This boy is learning young, how to ride the weather and work hard. I’m sure he’ll understand what that means when he reads this. Yes, this is a very special painting indeed. And yes, his mom has seen it and ordered her print of it! So that means,,,the original is up for grabs!

Tomorrow is Veterans Day. I had thought about taking the day off from the Child a days, but realized I’ll be taking time off during the Thanksgiving Holiday, so I hope you can join me tomorrow for something very special. It is an image sent in by a follower/reader and I’m sure it will be appreciated to share it with everyone tomorrow.

Until then, enjoy the child a days and remember, you can always submit an image to the child a days, by sizing your JPG to 5 x 7 at 300dpi and send it on through to my email. I look forward to immortalizing your young one, with a favorite pet too!

As many of you know, I recently donated an original colored pencil painting, Park Pony, to a local benefit sale.

Park Pony, an original colored pencil painting, was chosen by a representative of The Kansas Christian Home Auxiliary for their 2009 holiday bazaar.

The Holiday Bazaar & Bake Sale was November 6 & 7, 2009. The painting brought in nearly $300 during the weekend.

I am very pleased to announce the Cedar Point, Kansas resident, Judy Wealand, is now the owner of Park Pony. Neal and I had the great pleasure of delivering the painting to Judy at her home on Sunday. It’s always a thrill to see artwork in good homes and Park Pony is certainly in a good home.

My thanks to Judy for visiting the KCH Auxiliary Bazaar this past weekend and for participating in the Park Pony raffle. Congratulations are in order, too!

Proceeds from sales and the raffle help support the Kansas Christian Home in Newton, Kansas.

As promised in my previous post I have finished my whimsical cat sculpture.

Meet “Dash”!

I had an absolute ball creating this guy. Even though he isn’t a ginger cat, he’s inspired by our new kitten. I started making him the day after I tried to photograph Pumpkin (aka Toots) running around the yard. All I got were these crazy pictures of flying back legs. So we have Dash, short for Dashing Through the Snow. He’s created in a whimsical folk art style out of paper clay. His base and support are wood and he’s got loads of diamond dust glitter on his snowflake blanket and base. The entire piece measures 14.5″ tall x 12″ wide. I haven’t decided what venue I will sell him on. Right now he’s making me quite happy. If you are interested in purchasing him, please let me know.

I also finished 6 Holiday horse pendants! I’m going to offer them for 2 days on my blog before I put them in my Etsy store. Price is $29 each and that includes first class postage in the US ($2 more for postage abroad). I’ll accept check, money order or paypal. Each pendant is signed, hand painted, comes with a toggle clasp, an approx. 20″ black satin cord, glass accent beads and comes in a velvety drawstring bag. Email me if you want one! jmacneill@hotmail.com First come, first served!

Notice how the eyes and the nose are wonky. Easy fix (phew!) and not a big worry at this stage as all is still in the “getting it just right” process.
I will ask you however to forgive the quality of the scan. This drawing is so big and getting it to sit on the scanner is pretty challenging. I will have to revert to my Eos’s help from now on.

Thanks for popping by.
More to come… soon. Tomorrow is another “no school” day.

Word of advise to artists, don’t try and take photos of paintings with a lot of black in them at night! It doesn’t matter what you do, you’ll get a glare. But I really wanted to post this one, so I went ahead even with the glare. I’ll have to take a better photo outside when the weather permits.

So, that’s the latest piece, a pumpkin, potato squash, and a little copper kettle I’d found at a bargain shop. It was pretty banged up, but still exquisite! I’ll be using it again since it’s once of those things that has so much charm.

I’m also glad to report that the 30 x 40 piece I donated to the Sudbury YMCA Art Auction sold! Yup! That makes me pretty happy since the money’s going to an excellent community cause.

Right now I’m working on a dog commission, and then I need to do another one, so I will share those as well. But I’ve got a couple of great still lifes cooking up in my head and in fact, once I’m done on the computer I’m going to start setting up.

Hope you enjoy this piece, even though it’s a dark photo with a lot of glare!
Granted, I do shoot year-round, but serious winter shooting is challenging and hard on hands and camera, so I’m quite content to carry on with what we’ve got for the foreseeable future.
I made a pilgrimage to the Gypsy cob farm on Friday, which was a ridiculously warm +17 C (about 62 F) albeit with an absolutely ferocious wind to temper things just in case we might actually start to enjoy ourselves. I love big winds so I was quite happy with the whole state of affairs anyway. Didn’t get quite the shots I hoped for as the stallions I wanted to shoot were not in their pastures due to construction work, but I had a great time nonetheless visiting the brood mare pasture and checking on the progress of the youngsters in the close-in turnouts. I think my best shots from that visit were of the young dogs, tussling and tugging on their pull-toy that I finally gave in and threw for them at the end of my visit. I’ve learned not to start a visit by throwing things for the dogs or I’ll never get as far as the horses. If you are interested in seeing one of the young mares in action, click here for the video of Violet’s debut at Spruce Meadows this past September. For a youngster with only three months of training, she came through like a trooper in surroundings that can intimidate even seasoned horses.
The unseasonably warm weather apparently brought out some unseasonable stinging insects, as when I got home that evening it was to discover that my poor dog Mickey had been stung by something and was having a nasty allergic reaction. This has happened to him before in the summer with bee stings, so that’s my working theory for this go-round as well. Odd though it is to think of bees being out in Saskatchewan in November, my brother-in-law reported seeing a bee in their yard that afternoon, so it does seem possible. Mickey’s neck and head were swollen and his head had lumps all over it. He was breathing OK, thank goodness, but couldn’t hold his food down (or the antihistamines that I had given him) and was generally a very pathetic creature. Luckily within twenty-four hours he was back to normal, but I did feel very badly for him in the interval.
Since the weather is holding for the moment, it seemed a good idea to make a repeat visit to the ghost town of the Hallowe’en day shoot, this time without the low clouds, wind, snow and freezing rain. A couple of indulgent friends came along with me for this outing, which we made today. We were able to get into several of the ghost town buildings, which for the most part seem sound enough underfoot and overhead, and in general had a good poke around. Second stop on our route was a return visit to the house down the road with the wonderful staircase and all the interesting peeling paint textures (it doesn’t take much to make me happy) to add to my collection. Since it wasn’t pouring rain this time, we made a third farm call to the one that we passed by totally last time.
This was an absolutely fabulous place for those of us interested in taking shots of old and decaying items. The workshop was full of stuff: tools, horse harness, bridles, metal things, you name it. The house was in really poor shape and not safe to enter (although my friend Donna *really* wanted to) but we could move around the outside and peer into windows. There were books and a child’s report card in one room, coats and sweaters hanging on the wall, tables and dishes in the kitchen, and in general it looked as if the family had just gotten up and left one day and never came back.
Then there was the machinery. All sorts of old grain trucks (every single windshield with multiple bullet holes), and one of the trucks with the keys still in the ignition. There were old wagons and wagon wheels, ancient combines, and many antique farm machines that were a total mystery to me (I am a city person, after all). There was even an ancient (relatively speaking) classic beetle-style Volkswagen out behind the henhouse. I don’t know how we would go about finding out the story of this place, but I’m sure there is one. As with our first two stops, this one definitely merits several return visits in other seasons and varying light conditions.
On to the shots for today. Now that the sun is setting so early (around 5 PM at present) I have been able to get some nice sunset shots on the way home from my afternoon rides at Ebon. Shot one was taken last week on my alternate route home from the barn. I was struck by the reflection of the sky in the water, showing around the edges of the ice in the middle.
The rest of the shots are from today. Shot two shows the back of the store with all its interesting roof angles. The orange snow fencing on the right of the building marks the open well. Good to know where it is!!
Shot three was taken from inside one of the houses (actually it might be the only house, as none of the other existing buildings seemed very house-like), showing classic “old farmhouse of the previous mid-century” decor, complete with an old TV in the corner.
Shot four shows a detail of some of the horse tack hanging in the shed of the last farm, and shot five is the interior of one of the old grain trucks, where you can see the keys still in the ignition. Poor exposure on the windshield, but not much to be done about that.
So far the forecast is for the weather to continue much as it is, so here’s hoping next week’s photos are still “late fall” ones, and not “early winter”, although we have had a taste of that already.

To cut a long week short: it was a great success on the art front. First three Christmas commissions approved and delivered safely (woot !), new orders come in (2x woot!), went to a great vernissage and have a diminishing stock of Christmas cards.
On the “mummy” front: sadly, been dealing with 2 sickly kiddies with sore tummies and grumpy dispositions.
Nursed, loved and entertained them as best I could. Seems to have done the trick: they’re back at school and up to all sorts of tricks.

With “normality” returned my pencils have been actively scribbling. Very happy indeed to be able to catch up on lost time.

In fact, have been working on Hurricane’s portrait (visual up-date tomorrow) with a very appropriate “A great day for Freedom” by Pink Floyd in the background.
Half my life since the wall came down …

I confess I’ve been watching a lot of videos on the internet the last few days.

It’s my habit to look at a few Thoroughbred races each weekend just to get my weekly horse fix. I had the pleasure of seeing some great racing from the weekend’s Breeder’s Cup series.

But with the predominance of harness racers on my current portrait worksheet, I’ve also been watching the trotters and pacers.

October 24 was Breeder’s Crown Day at Woodbine. The best freshmen and sophomore trotters and pacers were on display in those races, so it was a natural to watch them when I found a place offering videos. Not just clips, but the entire race, then a real-time replay of the stretch and then my favorite thing of all … slow motion replays! Oh boy!

But I’ve also discovered that a lot of the farms have videos of their sales yearlings for the viewing. These youngsters are put in paddocks, where they trot up a storm. The clips are then set to music and it is a delight to watch them.

Of course, the yearlings are on display, so they’re sleek and shiny. The light couldn’t be better and the result is enough to make me want to paint every single one of them.

Southwind Farms has some great videos. I found videos at Bonley Farm in Michigan, a place I’ve visited. So does Concord Stud Farm and Blue Chip.

I’ll tell ya, they’re better than a shot of vitamins when it comes to energizing me. Whew!

I’m in a magazine! Woo hoo!
I received a nice package from The Trail Rider magazine with several copies of their latest issue and a nice letter from them. I was so excited to see a little write up and picture of my Cafepress holiday horse ornaments!! It’s the first time I’ve been in a magazine so you can imagine my excitement.

Thank you Trail Rider!

I have a little time to work today and I’m trying to get some holiday horse pendants painted. I should have them finished in a day or so. Also working on a folk art cat sculpture I started a few weeks ago. He’s turned into a winter kitty and will have lots of glitter and whimsy. And, I will finally have some new blank signs coming in to start my holiday horse signs. Please check back soon for pictures and details! Some pieces I will be offering for sale on my blog before Etsy and Ebay.

Thanks for visiting my blog. If I don’t get back to you right away it’s because I am swamped in the studio!
