It is estimated that over 100,000 Americans discover that they have colon cancer annually. Many of these cases include those who have been diagnosed with cancer that has metastasized (metastatic colon cancer). Most of us already know that at this stage, treatment may become more complicated and difficult. Some cases though still have some hope for a few years’ survival.

Once colon or colorectal cancer has metastasized, it is no longer restricted to the tissues of the colon. It has already moved beyond to other organs of the body. The lymphatic system may be affected first. The cancer cells can then be transported through this same system to other organ cells in the lungs and liver. Other organs may ultimately be affected too.

Those who have been diagnosed metastasized cancer should still consider undergoing treatment. Proper treatment can improve one’s chances of extended survival compared to those who do not undergo treatment. Most patients treated for metastatic colon cancer have a 20% to 30% chance of surviving for five more years after diagnosis. Those who do not have cancer cells that have spread to the lungs or liver, have an even higher rate of survival.

Preventing Cancer

It is unfortunate that many people have very mild or no symptoms at the initial stages of cancer during which treatment is most effective. A number of people therefore do not find out about their condition until it is at an advanced stage. The best way to save yourself from the possibility of developing this kind of cancer is to simply prevent it. Although it can strike anybody, you can take precautions against it.

The first aspect that you should check is your lifestyle. There are some lifestyle habits and preferences that could increase a person’s chance of developing colon cancer. This includes smoking, eating a lot of fatty foods, not eating enough fibrous and nutrient rich foods and being overweight - all are considered cancer risk factors.

You can also help prevent the advancement to metastatic colon cancer by regularly scheduling yourself for screening. You should always consider this if you have any of the above-mentioned risk factors. Regular screening is also usually advisable for people over 50 years old.

What to Look For

Aside from modifying your lifestyle and regular screening, you can help ensure proper and prompt treatment by watching out for the signs and symptoms of possible colon cancer.

Clear colon cancer symptoms often appear only when the disease is at an advanced stage. There may be some clues though in the initial stages that may tell you that a visit to the doctor should already be scheduled. Consider asking for a doctor’s opinion if you have increasingly irregular bowel movements, blood in the stools, and abdominal pains. You can have some other digestive problem but it is better to be sure.

If the cancer cells have metastasized, you could experience a variety of symptoms that will depend on the area that is affected. If the metastatic colon cancer cells move to the lungs, a patient will have evident breathing problems. At this point, stomach bloating and various bodily pains may also emerge.

In the United States, it is estimated that 1 in 17 people will develop colon or colorectal cancer, which could ultimately lead to metastatic colon cancer. Knowing colon cancer warning signs could prove vital to a better prognosis.
Colon cancer is very rare regions were peoples diet are mainly vegetables, and gain. It’s more common Western nations and the US where a large part of their diet is meat.

A diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables, beans and whole grains help prevent colon cancer. The American Cancer Society recommends at least five servings of these foods each day.

It’s very hard to determine exactly what components of a healthy diet are protective. Some research has zero in on several possible. Low Fats - Dietary fats and colon cancer have clear links. Fats boost the body’s production of bile acids, which promote rapid cell growth.

High fiber - The indigestible part of plant-based foods, fiber moves food through the bowel quickly, reducing its contact with carcinogens and bile acids.

Oat bran has little help in colon cancer risk. But, Wheat bran helps more then vegetables and fruit fiber.

If you can get 25 grams of dietary fiber per day from vegetables, fruits, beans, whole grain cereals, and breads.

Calcium - studies show that calcium protects the colon by neutralizing bile acids and fatty acids. You should consume at least 1,000 Milligrams of calcium each and every day.

Antioxidants - not enough vitamin C and E and beta-carotene seem to increase the risk of colon cancer. You should eat a lot of fruits vegetables because these are the best sources of antioxidants.

Exercise - If you are not very active your chance of colon cancer increase. Physical activity reduces your risk by hastening the passage of waste through the body. It also stimulates blood flow to the colon. Try to stay as active as possible, do exercise at least 30 minutes a day.

Natural Cleanse opens the door to weight control, healing and rejuvenation. Colon cleansing is the process of eliminating impacted waste from the colon, and clearing the colon to allow for proper absorption of vitamins and minerals. Colon cleansing can be a safe and valuable process for eliminating toxins from the body and restoring normal muscular activity in the colon.

We all know that a, strong and well functioning colon is quintessential to maintaining the best possible health.

If you have been diagnosed with colon cancer, then your next step is to think about treatment. Treatment options vary and will be determined by the stage of colon cancer and the location of the cancer. Your oncologist will be able to give you the best advice on which treatment option is right for you. This article is going to explain three of the most common treatments for colon cancer. Keep reading to gain a valuable education.

Surgery is a Standard Treatment for Colon Cancer

Surgery to remove all sections of the bowel that has been affected by cancer is a common treatment in all stages of colon cancer. There are three types of surgery that can be used to remove the cancer. They are:

Local excision. This is reserved for cancer that is found in the early stages. The doctor will simply insert a tube into your rectum and advance it into the colon. He will then be able to cut away the cancerous part of the colon. If a polyp is involved, he can remove the polyp this way also. This is a fairly simple surgery and requires no incision.

Resection. This is used if the cancer in the colon has become quite large. The surgeon will make an incision into the abdomen and remove part of the colon that is affected by the cancer. He will also remove small sections of healthy tissue that surrounds the diseased section of the bowel. Lymph nodes near the colon may be removed so they can be examined to determine if the cancer has spread. The surgeon will then sew the two healthy ends of the bowel together.

Resection and colostomy.Depending on the what part of the colon is affected and how much of the colon is involved, the surgeon may be unable to sew the healthy ends back together. In that case, one end of the bowel will be brought through a hole that is made in the abdomen. This is called a stoma. The patient will then need to wear bag over the stoma because the waste is now being expelled through the stoma. This is called a colostomy. Many people are able to lead normal lives after a colostomy.

Radiation to Treat Colon Cancer

Radiation can be high energy x-rays or other forms of radiation that is used to kill off cancer cells or to keep them from growing. Radiation may be given externally or it may be given internally through needles, seeds or catheters that are placed near the cancer. The way radiation is used is determined by the location and the size of the cancer.

Chemotherapy Treatment for Colon Cancer

Chemotherapy drugs can be used to kill cancer cells or to stop them from spreading. Chemotherapy can be injected through the vein or ingested through the mouth in the form of pills. It can also be injected directly into the area that is affected by the cancer such as the abdomen or the spine.

All of these treatments may be used alone or in combination with each other. A lot of patients that have surgery to remove part of the diseased colon will have chemotherapy or radiation to kill of any traveling cancer cells.

Colon cancer can be cured if caught early enough and contained. Stay in tune to your body and get regular check ups.

Whilst every opportunity has been take to ensure that all information is correct and up to date at time of writing, it is not meant to be used to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Please always consult your doctor or health care specialist if you are in any way concerned about your health.

Colon Cancer is the third most common form of Cancer. A knowledge of the treatment of Colon Cancer could save your life or that of someone close to you. Treatment of Colon Cancer is very effective if started early enough.
If you are concerned about contracting colon cancer, then there are a number of steps you can take to reduce the risk. Diet and exercise play a huge role in prevention of colon cancer and other health related problems. It is no secret that the typical diet today can be more damaging to our bodies than it is helpful. Fast food and other high fat foods contain very little of the necessary nutrients that our bodies need to function at top performance.

Foods that are high in fat and low on fiber play havoc on your digestive system. When your digestive system is not able to function properly, it is unable to rid your body of toxic wastes. As these toxic wastes accumulate in your body, they will begin to do damage.

The best way to keep your digestive system functioning at maximum performance is to eat the right foods. Eating healthy, high fiber foods can reduce your risk of getting colon cancer. A healthy diet will also make you feel better and give you more energy and it will help you keep your weight under control.

Best Foods to Prevent Colon Cancer

Fruits and vegetables. The best are the ones that contain anti-oxidant properties. Red, yellow, green and orange colored fruits and vegetables are reported to have a large amount of cancer fighting anti -oxidants. Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cabbage have been reported to reduce the risk of colon cancer also.

Fiber. Foods high in fiber can keep you from developing constipation. The fiber builds bulk in your bowel which can contribute to regular bowel movements and good colon cleansing.

Calcium. This common mineral is important for a multitude of the body’s chemical processes. In fact, in animal studies a lack of calcium has been proven to lead to excessive cell growth in the colon.

Lean meats. There have been studies performed that have proven a high concentration of fat in the diet can be responsible for the development of certain types of cancer. Read your food labels carefully and reduce the amount of saturated fat in your diet. Choose only lean meats such as chicken, pork or fish.

In addition to eating a healthy diet, getting more exercise can help prevent colon cancers. The increase in physical activity will have your digestive system functioning better and will lead to an overall state of better health. There have also been studies that suggest taking an aspirin once a day can prevent colon cancer. And it goes without saying that if you smoke or engage in other high risk behaviors, you should stop to decrease your risk of cancer.

So it you are concerned about colon cancer, change your diet. Start eating a healthy, high fiber diet. Get plenty of exercise and drink more water. If you do these things, chances are your risk for colon cancer will decrease significantly.

Colon Cancer is the third most common form of Cancer. A knowledge of simple changes you can make in your lifestyle and diet could save your life or that of someone close to you.
Colon cancer surgery is a very normal procedure that is done in hospitals on a daily basis. Although some of the numbers seem to be grim, such as it being the second leading cause of death that is cancer related, the fact of the matter is that many people have this surgery and are able to overcome it without any additional problems.

Whenever your doctor decides that colon cancer surgery is necessary, you are going to have to prepare yourself in order to make the surgery go as smoothly as possible. This will not only include preoperative procedures such as emptying the colon of all waste but will also include getting your insurance papers in order ahead of time. It’s difficult enough to go in for such a serious operation without having a last-minute glitch cause you stress which you don’t need.

There are several different types of colon cancer surgery that may take place. Most of them are fairly noninvasive and can be done in the form of laparoscopic surgery. Depending on the type and invasive nature of your cancer, however, it might be necessary for your doctor to remove part or all of your colon. It might also be possible that your doctor will discover additional problems whenever he goes and to do the surgery in the first place. Discuss all of these possibilities ahead of time with your doctor to help put your mind at ease.

The final part of your colon surgery will be the postoperative recovery period. It is possible that you will have to stay in the hospital for up to a week, depending on the invasive nature of the surgery that was performed. After that time, you will be able to continue your recovery at home until you’re strong enough to lead your normal life again.

By Sandy Griffin

Any kind of cancer is almost synonymous with disease and death and colon cancer, also referred to as colorectal cancer, is another such dangerous disease. It develops innocuously, often without any forewarning and very often there is an absence of any obvious symptoms. Give the prevalence of this disease it is important that every individual, especially those who are high risk, should arm themselves with adequate knowledge about the signs of colon cancer as well as the treatment options available.

Symptoms of colon cancer include presence of blood in the stools and bleeding of the rectum. Some of the other signs of colon cancer could include change in bowel regularity, benign polyps in the colon, a decrease in stool size, cramps, unexplained weight loss, vomiting, the existence of pain in the stomach and continuous fatigue. These are the signs you should look for if you suspect that you could possibly be developing colon cancer.

But the unfortunate truth is that an individual can have colon cancer and not exhibit any of the mentioned symptoms. Unfortunately, this happens way too often. A physical exam usually doesn’t show any problems and the doctor only suspects colon cancer and calls for a screening if a routine exam reveals a mass of tissues that is usually felt through the abdomen. Currently a screening of the colon, or a colonoscopy is the only way of getting a view of the entire colon and determining the extent of the abnormality.

Even then, polyps within the colon are not always suggestive of cancer. Colon cancer’s symptoms are further ambiguous as even blood in the stool isn’t always suggestive of colon cancer. It is thus reasonable for the medical industry to assign risk factors to certain events in an individual’s life. One of these events is an individual’s age. A person’s age is the major risk factor even though colon cancer doesn’t only occur for those over fifty. It is just that one’s chances are higher at that age when most signs and symptoms of colon cancer tend to appear.

Individuals who are high risk for colon cancer include those who have a family history of cancer, irrespective of the kind of cancer. Polyps that are in the colon are also signs of colon cancer, but must be properly diagnosed by a health professional.

If you are above the age fifty, and wish to know more about colon cancer, the Center for Disease Control has a program for those individuals who are more than fifty years of age and who have little or no health insurance. The number to call for any help, is 1-800-4-CANCER. Since colon cancer is such a widespread problem, the program helps to offer screenings for the disease. There are estimates that over 52,000 people lost their lives to colon and rectal cancer in 2007 in the United States alone. Learning to recognize the signs of colon cancer is the best cure against this killer disease.

The typical colon can hold bacteria and be a host to numerous parasites and toxins. If left alone, these toxins can create an environment that is conducive to cancer. Colon cleansing can effectively remove these bacteria, parasites and toxins so that the colon functions properly. Keeping the colon clear and free of debris can help the body dispose of waste quickly and thus help reduce the chance of cancer.

Colon cleansing can be a great start to a clean and healthy colon. Once you cleanse your colon you need to make dietary changes that will help keep the colon working properly. This includes avoiding processed foods and those with additives as well as increasing the intake of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

1. Removing bacteria from the colon.

Cleansing helps to eliminate the host of bad bacteria that often accumulate in a colon. When waste is not eliminated quickly it can turn putrid and become a breeding ground for bacteria. The bacteria can then be re-absorbed into the system causing health problems and possibly cancer.

2. Removing toxins that accumulate in the colon and are absorbed back into the body.

Toxins come from many dietary sources. One of the most common ways is through eating processed foods and those with chemical additives and preservatives. Colon cleansing washes away these toxins to prevent them from remaining in the system where they can cause problems and lead to cancer or other colon disease.

3. Removing mucous buildup.

Mucous can build up on the inner lining of the colon. This mucous can make it impossible for nutrients to be properly absorbed through the colon lining. Mucous can also contribute to improper colon function. The colon cannot properly expel waste when thick mucous is blocking it from working well.

4. Removing parasites.

The colon can be home to many toxins, bacteria and even parasites. Parasites and their eggs and larvae are often present in the human colon. While this doesn’t pose a problem under normal circumstances for those with weakened immune systems or those with other diseases the parasites can cause disease.

5. Allowing for frequent bowel movements.

By quickly eliminating waste from the body it does not stay stagnant allowing toxins and bacteria to build up. Instead, frequent elimination keeps the colon clean and healthy and protects it from waste that stays too long in the system.

Colon Cancer also known Colorectal cancer. Colon cancer 2nd most deaths for cancers in the US. Colon cancer is cancer that starts in the large intestine (colon) or the rectum (end of the colon). The colon is the part of the digestive system where the waste material is stored. The rectum is the end of the colon adjacent to the anus. Together, they form a long, muscular tube called the large intestine (also known as the large bowel). Tumors of the colon and rectum are growths arising from the inner wall of the large intestine. Benign tumors of the large intestine are called polyps. Cancer of the colon or rectum is also called colorectal cancer. In the United States, it is the fourth most common cancer in men and women. It is the third most common form of cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the Western world. Colorectal cancer causes 655,000 deaths worldwide per year. Many colorectal cancers are thought to arise from adenomatous polyps in the colon. These mushroom-like growths are usually benign, but some may develop into cancer over time.

Colon cancer often causes no symptoms until it has reached a relatively advanced stage. Thus, many organizations recommend periodic screening for the disease with fecal occult blood testing and colonoscopy. It is common in the Western world, and is rare in Asia and Africa. In countries where the people have adopted western diets, the incidence of colorectal cancer is increasing. Most cases of colon cancer begin as small, noncancerous (benign) clumps of cells called adenomatous polyps. Polyps of the colon and rectum are almost always benign and usually produce no symptoms. They may, however, cause painless rectal bleeding or bleeding not apparent to the naked eye. There may be single or multiple polyps. Polyps greater than 1 centimeter have a greater cancer risk associated with them than polyps under 1 centimeter. Polyps with atypia or dysplasia are also more likely to progress on to colon cancer. The risk of cancer is much higher in sessile villous adenomas than in pedunculated tubular adenomas. Cancer is found in 40% of villous adenomas, as compared to 15% in tubular adenomas.

Chemotherapy is also used to treat patients with stage IV colon cancer. Surgery remains the primary treatment while chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy may be recommended depending on the individual patient’s staging. High-fiber foods help move waste through your digestive tract faster, so harmful substances don’t have much contact with the lining of the intestine. High-fiber foods are also rich in phytonutrients, which appear to protect against several forms of cancer. Calcium and vitamin D also seem to help protect against colorectal cancer. There is certainly just as much buzz about folate and colorectal cancer prevention as there has been about calcium. The jury is still out on antioxidants and the prevention of colorectal cancer. Taking antioxidants, such as vitamin C or carotenoids, may reduce cancer risk but other studies have failed to back up these results. Vegetables high in folate, like leafy greens, seem to offer particular protection from colon cancer, especially for those who drink alcohol. Cruciferous vegetables, like broccoli and cauliflower, also contain phytochemicals that may prevent damage to colon cells.

Colonoscopy prep is the time that leads up to the actual process of “colonoscopy’. Since this process involves the cleaning of the bowel, this time is very crucial in the entire colonoscopy treatment. It is due to the fact that with the colonoscopy prep, there are chances for the occurrence of problems during the treatment and also proves helpful for the physician in gathering the information needed while performing the treatment and thus various possible problems can be kept at bay. Thus, it must be prepared as directed because its absence would mean unclean bowel which in turn would lead to inaccurate test results.

Usually needed colonoscopy prep time can be anywhere between 10 and 36 hrs depending on the test type one is having. However, the preparation for the process initiates a week before the beginning of the actual procedure. It is one or two days prior to the procedure that one is required to start the bowel cleaning process.

One Week Prior to Colonoscopy Prep

A week before the actual procedure of colonoscopy takes place; one is forbidden the use of any kind of aspirin or NSAIDs (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like naproxen, ibuprofen. In addition to this, one is also asked not to drink during this time.

In a case, one is having some medicines, do not stop taking them on their own rather ask for the advice of cardiologist about stopping the use of these medicines 3 to 5 days prior to the colonoscopy.

Be sure that the health care practitioner is well aware in case one has:

* Tendency to develop latex allergy

* Sleep apnea

* Internal defibrillator

* Gone through hip/knee replacement previous year

* Been using Sinemet

Also make sure that the health practitioner is also informed beforehand if one has antibiotics before visiting the dentist or has problem of diabetes.

To be able to view the inside of the colon i.e. large intestine constitutes an important part of colonoscopy. So, if there will be too much food in the intestine; the physician will not have clear view of the colon. To avoid this problem, one is required to take some medicines to clean the bowel which is known as “bowel prep”, it is essential for the procedure thought is done usually just a day prior to the procedure.

Other Reminders about Colonoscopy Prep

The most important thing to know is that the medicines one has during the colonoscopy can make him/her absent-minded, so it must be ensured that anyone going through the procedure is accompanied to the healthcare facility so that he/she could listen and note down the important information provided by the health professional. One should not go alone during the process.

After colonoscopy is done one should avoid operating or driving heavy machineries for at least about 24 hours at minimum. Moreover, alcohol consumption and the use of any prescription tranquilizers must also be avoided as the medicines used in the colonoscopy are tend to remain in the system for about a day.

To conclude, to have the colonoscopy done successfully, it is essential to get colonoscopy done properly which proves helpful in knowing about the health of colon.
