Kindle Lending Library - for Prime members

Amazon brought Kindle book lending to thousands of libraries this year, and now they bring it to Prime members too. This is great news for those of us who 1) don't have a local library that lends ebooks, and 2) already use and love Prime membership.

First, what is prime membership?
- This costs $79 per year (approx $6.59 per month). You get free 2-day shipping on millions of products, and $3.99 for overnight shipping on those items. That alone saves me around $300 per year because I use my account for lots of shopping for home and work.
In addition, you get free streaming from PBS, Fox, Disney/ABC.

Now, Prime Members get to choose one book per month from the Lending Library. Not ALL books are in the library, but they are not all rejects either ;) The ever-popular Hunger Games series made it in.

If you borrow a book, any Kindle device on your account may read it, but not on free apps.

There is no return date. You can take 3 months to read it if you like, but you cannot borrow the next book till you return the last.

Do you have to join Prime if you own a Kindle?

Amazon back up personal documents for Kindle

We've been able to send personal documents to Kindle for a long time. Until now, we had to keep a back up on our computers of those documents, so if you bought a book on another site, you'd want to save it somewhere in case you lost your kindle.

Now, Amazon are providing 5 GB of 'cloud' storage for those personal documents! If you send books to your Kindle email address, they will now be backed up for you on the Amazon server! (You can turn this option OFF if you don't like it). You don't have to save this service for books - you can use it for all sorts of documents!

If you have more than one kindle, example, a multi-kindle family
You will now have one main kindle address for emailing documents. At first, only your main kindle will be on it. You have to manually add the others. Why? Well you might not want your kids receiving some of your personal documents so better that it's you who decides that, not Amazon!

To manage these settings, visit your Manage your Kindle page (sign in required). Visit Manage Personal Documents, and see the various options.
Spam is avoided by you managing which email address can mail you documents! You can add your boss, if he/ she wants to email reports to your Kindle. You can add your mom if she wants to email you a letter in word format! You can simply keep it as you and no-one else.

The great thing about all this? If you get a new Kindle, you will be able to add it into the loop and forward all these documents - with bookmarks & annotations, straight to your new device!

Kindle Clip - for Hinged covers

I wish I had one of these when I had a hinged cover for my old Kindle. One problem I experienced with hinged covers was that if someone else picked it up carelessly, or I dropped it (oops), the Kindle would flap on the hinges and it would risk cracking. I had it for a couple of years and found a tiny crack at the end - nothing that upset me or damaged it, but it could have been worse.

Kindle for PC - Organizing and IMPORTING collections

Kindle for PC now has the ability to sort by collection and import collections.

This means, if you have a Kindle and Kindle App for PC, you can transfer collections from one to the other. For a long time people have wanted a 'drag and drop' method to organize books, that would be easy to use and could be transferred to their Kindle. Now we have it.
In theory, I can drag and drop all my books into various collections, then send it to my Kindle and have it all nicely organized. It's pretty good and with some patience and practice, it's become a great tool for me.

However, it is not perfect and has limitations. And it sometimes throws out a couple of bugs & you need to be methodical. With a little bit of methodical step-by-step organizing, this can work well.

For this guide, I will call PC for Kindle "PC App", and will call the Kindle device "Device".
As far as I know, it will not work for apps on anything other than PC at this time.

There are 3 options for starting off:

1) Import from Device to PC App
if you have many books already sorted, you might want to import them to PC App, edit them and send back to your device.
Pros - can save a lot of time, many books may already be in collections that you wouldn't want to change
Cons - can end up with duplicate collections with different quantities in each.
If you delete anything from them in PC APP, it won't affect your Device. Only ADDING to the collection has any affect on the Device.

To do this method, go to PC App, click File, Import Collections, select the device. Your device collections will appear. You may now add to them.

2) Clean Slate Organization on PC App.
Pros -
Cleaner, less likely to have unexplained differences in collections
You don't need to wipe your whole Kindle (as I did) - just delete the collections. Collection, Right Click, Delete collection

Cons - time consuming if you have a lot of books that need to go back into collections.

or 3) a bit of both. My recommended method.

You can delete collections that you know are completely disorganized on your device but leave alone any that you are happy with, like if you have a To Be Read collection with 400 books and you want to add to it but not remove from it.

So, delete the bad collections (not books!) on your Device. Do a Sync.
Then go to PC App and import collections from Device. It will bring in the collections that you left alone. Now create some new ones and start organizing books.
Try not to 'delete' anything from a collection that still exists on your device because deleting is what causes issues.

Syncing
After any method, do a sync. I don't know if this helps or not but it cannot hurt. When I am happy with the collections on the PC App, I do a sync. Click Tools > Sync and check for items.
Then go to the Device, Menu > View Archived Items, click Import collections from other devices.
Selec the PC App. Import.

- Some things to remember.

** Order in which to do things **
When you get a new Kindle, you must download the books BEFORE you import the collections from your old device or from PC App. Otherwise you will still have to manually add the books to collections.
If anything is in archives and you want it in the new collections, download them to device FIRST.

Samples do not always cross over in the import, but they sometimes too. Since samples are unprotected, you can USB save them to your hard drive of your computer, and then copy them back over in the future.
This can mess up your numbers when you are comparing your device to your PC App, so I like to transfer them out of my device onto my hard drive.

Books out on Loan:
If you have loaned out books with the Lending feature, then they appear in archives only. That means, in PC App you can add it to a collection, but it won't be in the collection on your Device. You must wait until the book is off loan and you can download it again.

Games/ Active Content/ Main dictionaries such as Notepad and Calender do not transfer - you have to manage those on your device.

Clean Slate: If you do a 'clean slate' re-organize, you do NOT need to delete all your books. You just need to delete your old collections. This will keep the books on your device but they won't be in a collection.

Back up your collections to Amazon by turning on annotations back up. Menu > Settings, scroll to Annotations Backup. If you are starting this process by importing your Device collections to PC App, you will want to do this so Amazon has your most up to date collections.

Ghosting... I don't know why but when you delete an old collection, there's a ghost of it somewhere, so when you import, you may find it re-appearing with books in it. Simply delete the collection, and you won't lose your books.

Archives
On PC App, all books in the archive can be seen on your screen, and you can put them all into collections. On your Device, you only see the downloaded books. So a collection on PC App might show 20 books but the Device version shows 17. Maybe those 3 missing books are in archives and not on your Device.

Imported Collections compliment not replace your current collections
This is important. Let's say you put 20 books in a To Be Read collection on your Device. Then you import to the PC App.
On PC App, you remove 3 of them and add 4 others, so PC App shows 21 books. When you import that to Device, the 4 new ones will be added but it won't delete the 3 old ones. So PC App still shows 21, but now the device shows 24 (the original 20 plus the 4 new ones).

Likewise, if I delete a collection called "Thrillers" in the PC App but leave it on my Device, then when I import it will still be on my Device. I would have to manually delete it from the Device too.If you think you will be deleting books from an EXISTING collection, then I recommend either a) deleting the entire collection if it is not too big, or b) if you are just deleting a few books form a large collection then do it manually on the Device. Don't try the Device-to-PC-to-Device-Shuffle and expect to be able to delete a bunch without getting into a mess.

Stragglers:
Even when all is done, and you have dragged all your books into a collection, then imported it to the device, you may still have the odd book that won't co-operate. First, go back to PC App and check, yes it is in a folder. If not, assign it to a folder. If it is, try importing again. Sometimes it then behaves. If not, you might just have to assign it manually.

PC App sort by:
PC App lets you sort books by Title, Author or Most Recent. Keep in mind, most recent applies to the APP not your device. Just because you read a book last week on the device, doesn't mean App will see it as recent.
On App, you see ALL books or Downloaded books. You cannot tell which ones have been put into collections without physically clicking it. Bit of a pain.

Duplicate collections
If you import back and forward, you can end up in a pickle with alsorts of duplicate collections going on. Example. You create one on Device called "Thrillers". Then - without importing - you create one on PC APP called Thrillers. When you import one to the other, now you have TWO collections called Thrillers. With different books in.
To avoid this: pick a method, be systematic. If you end up with dud collections, delete the collection. It won't delete the books, just the shelf they are on.

I deleted books from a collection on PC App, but they are still in the collection on my Device.
Importing from another Kindle only compliments your collections, it doesn't replace them or remove anything.
This is because if you have your books organized and you want to add your spouse's collections, you won't want to UN-do yours, just add to them.

Bug reports/ Feedback to amazon - On PC App, click Help > Send Feedback

This guide is very new and open to lots of suggestions to make this process better. I got there through trial and error. Would appreciate feedback.

Kindle for PC - Updated

I am LOVING the updated Kindle for PC.

Kindle for PC has been updated so that you can now:

- Copy and paste, Add Notes. Highlight, Google It, Use Dictionary
    Just highlight a word within a book to get options. We have this with Kindles but it's new to the app.

- Look up Book Extras of Shelfari
   This is reader added information that tells you what's next in a series, whether or not it's suitable for kids, who are the main characters etc

- Report errors
   Oooo! I love this. I often highlight misprints or typos and send them off to publishers or authors. This makes it real easy! Again, highlight, right click and select More > Report error.

- Import collections from your Kindle
So why would you do this if you don't like to read on a computer? For one, it makes a great visual library so browsing what to read next is very easy. What I really like too is that it doesn't download the library unless you want to read the book. You can look through your library, even move a book to a different collection, but it's not downloaded and index until you tell it to do so.

I particularly like this because I download a lot of books that are free or in sales, and by the time I come to read them, I have forgotten all about them.

New Import Collections feature

None of these benefits will make me ditch my Kindle device, but they are great to use. I have Kindle for PC at work so we can all read some work-related books from one account. Other than that, I didn't bother with it until now. Now I think I will be syncing it and using it for a few things on a regular basis.

If you have Kindle for PC already, you need to download again to get the update. You won't lose any books you have on there.

First, you need to sync the most up to date system.
If it's your PC, click F5 or Tools > Sync.

On Kindle, Menu > View Archived Items. At the top, click "Add Other Device Collections".

Renting Kindle Textbooks!

The great thing about Kindle books for students is how they greatly reduce the weight a student has to carry around on their backs. Unfortunately they are not always much cheaper than paperbooks, and that's not always because publishers are greedy. Especially in subjects were research is always changing, text books can be very expensive to write and produce. That means the ebook edition isn't necessarily going to be very cheap. In some cases, an older text book might need some special formatting for Kindle and early release of it in Kindle format might even seen a price hike to cover these new costs.

In addition to that, a downside of ebook editions from Kindle/ Nook etc is that students cannot sell their ebook when they have finished the course as they could with a paper book. So aside from lighter book bags and a built in dictionary, where's the good news for our students?

Well, Amazon have introduced textbook rentals! You can rent a textbook from Amazon for a period as short as 30 days up to a year, saving a lot on the cost of the book. You can still make notes and highlights - and even after the book is returned, you will still have access to those electronic notes on your Kindle!

Pricing varies of course and it's not available for every text book (even if there is a Kindle edition) though I suspect, like all the other Kindle editions, the numbers will grow.
I noticed that prices seem quite high for the first 30 day rental, but don't jump as high if you rent for longer. Example. 30 day rental on one was $35, but 120 day $55, only $20 more for an extra 3 months rental.

Harry Potter to come to ebooks!

Watch this press release filmed by JK Rowling on the new site Pottermore. Rowling announces a new online reading experience as well as the long awaited and much cried for release of Harry Potter in ebook form!

Rowling has resisted ebook form for some years, with rumors claiming she hated the format or didn't want her books pirated - though they've become one of the most pirated ebooks on the internet.

The ebooks will only be available for sale on the Pottermore site later this autumn - more details to come.

Kindle Tip! Using Kindle for Geocaching - part 2

Last year I posted that I used my Kindle's 3G feature when I was geocaching. By logging into the GC website, I could view GC logs and also log my finds.

However, I just found this handy tutorial that 1) makes 3G geocaching easier, and 2) gives an option to people who don't have 3G and you can have the geocaches loaded right on your Kindle. Woot!

Kindle Tip: Use of Tagging to improve bookmarking!

Until sometime in Spring 2010, Kindles didn't have the option of collections, so people with large ebook libraries struggled to manage their book content - wanting to sort by genre, or their favorites or separate the books they'd read from the books they wanted to read again or hadn't read yet was difficult.

We had a system of tagging whereby, at the start of a book, you could write a note within the book (just start typing and save; it appears like a footnote). The tag could be anything but we added a letter to the front to make it a 'nonsense' word that wasn't in any other books. I used the letter k/ so my tags were things like k/fave, k/classic, k/scifi. You get the idea.

Along came collections and tagging went out the window. Or did it?

I was at a meeting the other day, when someone told me he didn't enjoy his Kindle that much as it was too limiting. *Gasp* Whatever did he mean? He explained that he reads a lot of reference books for his work, and with real books he has a highlighting/ sticky note system. Red means go back and read. Orange, green, blue etc mean something else. This was something that the Kindle's bookmarking and highlighting cannot do, so it means either changing is tried-and-true method of referencing, or giving up on Kindle.

Hmmm. I was stumped for a moment, and felt sorry that someone didn't get to enjoy the Kindle as much as millions of others do! It wasn't until my drive home that it hit me. Tagging. I tested it out, and sure enough, it worked as I'd imagined. He could use the nonsense word system to still tag his red, orange, green and blue - but instead of using real colors, he'd type a note: kred, korange, kblue, kgreen.

At a later date, he could find these tags again, from a simple search:
- within the whole library, Home > Search
- within a book, click the book, Menu > Search this book. (Or from home, scroll to the book, right click, search)

Each brings up an index of where that tag is located (in the whole library search, it will also name the book and tell you how many times it appears). Scroll to what you want, click - and go straight to the reference.
And on top of that (there's more??) - if you have Kindle apps on other devices such as PC, iPad, Android phone etc, you can access those books and the tagging from there too.
