Mezada is an ancient fortress on top of a lone cliff in the east side of the Yehuda Desert. its peak reaches 63 meters above sea level and 450 meters over the level of the dead sea, which is underneath it.
The cliff was chosen by King Herod, to be used as a getaway and a royal fortress. On its flat top palaces and public buildings were built. Fortifications surrounded the compound and Water collection and storage systems were placed to ensure a steady and constant flow of water all year long. The dramatic historic events that occurred in Mezada during the great rebellion are described thoroughly in the book of Yosef Ben Matityahu,- “The war of the Jews”. according to Yosef Ben Matityahu, before The Second Temple, Jewish rebels took Mezada from the Sicari sect during the Great Rebellion and didn’t give in to the Roman rule. The Roman Emperor came and besieged Mezada in 8 separate besieging camps and after desperate battles on the walls of the fortress and when the hope of the rebels was broken and there was no escape, the rebels decided to commit suicide rather than end their lives as slaves.
Mezada, as a place of legacy, is a controversial place. In the Talmud Bavli we see that we are not to learn from the rebels ways, because of the suicide.
From afar we can see Mezada, which has been atop the pillar for thousands of years.

For around seven hundred years, until the Six Day War in 1967 Jews were not allowed to enter Mearat Hamachpela (The Cave Of The Patriarchs) in Hebron and were allowed only up to the Seventh step leading to the entrance (today the entrance is on the other side of the structure)

This was the ruling of the Mamluke Muslim regime that ruled the region of Israel. Jews prayed for years to be able to enter the magnificent structure of The Patriarchs Tombs.

But we knew how to make lemonade out of lemons…To be honest the Tombs of our ancestors Avraham, Yitzchak, Yaacov, Sarah, Rivka and Leah are very close to that Seventh step for they stand across the lower area of the structure that according to tradition is where they are buried.

Therefore that Seventh step left a room in the heart of Am Yisrael and still today on the way to pray many people stop on that very step.

On our tours to the Cave of machpela we can actually stand on that spot and Thank God also enter the structure.

In ancient times the tree was the border between the Judeah region and the Bethlehem region.
Before the war of Independence near the tree was the main junction of Gush Etzion.
During the war of Independence the Jordan league conquered Judeah and Sumaria and destroyed the Gush Etzion settlements.
Some of the people protecting the Gush died in battle and another 130 or so were massacred while in captivity.
The women and children that were evacuated before hand became refugees. The Lone Oak was always seen from the Israeli border and stood as a reminder and longing for the return to the Gush. Between the Independence War and the 6 Day War the refugees and their families watched the tree from Nes Harim and Mevo Beitar and wished for the day they’ll return to their lands.
After the 6 Day War and the loss of the Arab armies, The Oak Tree was a symbol of the lands restored to Jewish ruling. “Keren Kayemet Le’Yisrael” built a monument near The Oak Tree for the Gush Etzion settlers. Oak in Hebrew means Alon, the name of the settlement near the tree was named “Alon Shevut”.
The symbol of the Gush is that same Oak tree.
