Due to bad weather conditions during the weekend (remember the awesome downwind race we had at the Funglisse event !) they couldn’t start the trials on Sunday so they ran it on Monday which was perfect for me, being in the main event I had 1 day for training.
I havn’t been surfing much this winter, I’ve been paddling a lot on my raceboards and OC1 so I wasn’t expecting to do any good in the SUP surf contest, however I wanted to do my best.
My first heat was on tuesday morning, in very small waves… On my first wave I was wondering what I was doing here… unable to get any speed, feeling like a beginner…. No one was scoring high in those conditions but with my best score being a 3.9pt wave I’ve been sent straight to the repercharges !
On my repercharge heat there’s been a probleme with the scoring systeme and they mixed up the colors of our jerseys with our names, during the heat they were announcing the wrong scores to the wrong persons… Useless… they also forgot to mention us that they changed from 20mn heats to 15 heats…At the end I don’t even know my scores …I just know it wasn’t enough to go through to the 3rd round.. No worries, I can now focus on racing !
Wednesday and Thursday I chilled out and streched, I really needed this couple of days of relax after a full week of travel and competition.

Friday was the day of the long distance race, I was pretty confident I can win but I know that it is easy to make plenty of mistakes on the river course. The race turned out to be exactly what I expected to be, Kai Lenny took the lead from the start and I knew he wouldn’t make it to the finish. I am not very familiar with river currents so I decided to put all my trust on Gaetan Sene who is very good to find the best options.
It paid off and after several attemps we managed to create a good gap between us and Casper and Kai.
I won the race with only 7sec between Gaetan and I, he has been doing an awesome race !
Casper arrived 3rd and my friend Greg Closier arrived 4th just in front of Kai Lenny but he has been disqualified for not turning around the boat with the Naish flag at the finish… too bad…

I went to the party at night because the organisation told us there would be a presentation but Casper and Kai were missing so after waiting for a while we decided to go home as well…

On Saturday I woke up early to be ready for the heats of the beach race but when we showed up at 9 nothing was ready and we had to wait till 12 for the start.
I didn’t want to get tired before the final so I was just paddling relax in all my heats and won them without getting in troubles. In semi finals Casper was just behind me at the finish and I didn’t think he would try to sprint me out as this was wasting energy for nothing but he tried it, I played the same game and sprinted the last few meters on the beach to win the heat.
In the final Kai took the lead at the start and I followed him, I knew I had enough paddle power to pass him any time so I just waited for the right moment. I did my move and passed him. On the second lap I was paddling on the flat when a set wave came in and he could catch it from behind and caught up with me, when he arrived on me I got on the same wave and we arrived together at the bouy, it was a little bit critical to make the turn with the wave and Kai lost his balance and fell in, I took it easy and stayed on my board, I wasn’t too nervious as I knew that after that we had a good leg of paddling where I could’ve past him again. At the end I finished the race with a good advantage on Kai and Greg Closier finished 3rd.

Saturday we did a beach race “bop style” with a fun course close to the beach.
There was no race in the afternoon so we just went with some friends for a cruising along the coast that turned out to be a nice little downwind.

On Sunday the 10km long distance race has been an awesome downwind including strong wind and long glides , FUN all the way to the finish !
