Commemorations are being held across the world this weekend to mark the fortieth anniversary of the Stonewall uprising that launched the modern gay and lesbian rights movement. The uprising began in the morning on June 28, 1969, when New York City police officers raided a gay bar called the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village. As the police began dragging some of the patrons out, members of the gay community decided to fight back, sparking three days of rioting. On an early morning flight from Orlando, after appearing at the 19th Annual Gay Days at Disneyworld, I was “sirred” twice by a cab driver and flight attendant. All before 7 a.m. I would have thought the brand new faux leopard Croc flats I was sporting would have thrown them off. Or that the “Gay Day” banners everywhere would have heightened their threat levels to rainbow.

We had a great time at Andy’s Pub last night. There were nine of us who met to play pool, snack and have a couple drinks. We found out that there were no pool sharks among us, so if you “can’t” play pool, don’t let that stop you next time we have a “billiards night”. There were 9 of us show up, which was good for a mid week evening, and we had lots of fun and great conversation. It was good to catch up with what everyone has been doing since the last meeting. Two events next week. On Tuesday the 19th is the Erie Gay News Folding Party at 7 PM at the ZONE. It takes less the two hours and is always a good time. Good thing we can fold, talk, insert, talk, lick, talk and sticker and talk all at the same time. We are a remarkable group! Then comes the weekend when on Saturday the 23rd at 11am we will meet at Cappbell’s pottery in Cambridge Springs. Besides Thier beautiful glassware and pottery there will be a presebntation by a master glass blower. The demo is under the pavillion, so come rain or shine! I’d like to invite all of you to this event!

As the weeks pass, more and more guys from across the country and the local tri-state region are registering and making plans to attend Drenched Fur 5, Erie’s Bear Run Weekend. This year’s event weekend is coming up next month from Friday, April 3rd thru Sunday, April 5th, 2009. The DF5 Committee has been hard at work on preparing for the attendees this year. One important update is a new host hotel with Quality Inn and Suites near the Presque Isle Downs and Casino on Perry Highway (Rte 97). Just like last year, local guys are welcome to join us for our private event outing to Splash Lagoon Indoor Water Park Resort on Saturday night. Also, we’re bringing back some afternoon tours around the Erie region on Saturday including the ever popular Winery Tour. Prior to these events, we will be having a bar crawl on Friday night out to Craze and The Zone. We will be updating our website periodically with announcements and further information in the coming weeks. Since the launch of our on-line registration on January 1st, we have received over 100 registrations in the first month, and booked over 50% of our host hotel rooms. As 2008 wraps up and moves us into a new year, the Drenched Fur committee is back together again planning the next installment of Erie’s Bear Run Weekend. This year’s event weekend is scheduled for Friday, April 3rd thru Sunday, April 5th, 2009. We have some new things in the works including a new host hotel that is exclusively ours for the taking this year! We’ll be returning to Splash Lagoon Indoor Water Park Resort yet again at night like last year thanks to the rave reviews and and feedback we received. Students For Equality - Together As One on Jan. 27, 2009 - Equality on Campus Day - 1/27/2009 (Promo)

On January 27th, 2009, high school and college students across the country will wear the same shirt to school as a way to show unity within the community in the fight towards LGBT equality, particularly marriage equality. This is a visibility/fundraiser event geared towards achieving the following goals:

Get students more involved in the fight towards LGBT equality.
Raise the visibility of the LGBT movement towards equality by having everyone wear the same shirt on the same day. Students are encouraged to take group photos of everyone at their school wearing the Students for Equality t-shirt. Locations and time suggestions for group photos should be emailed to Eric Ross at eross@studentsforequality.com for better coordination. Students for Equality is encouraging students to submit the group pictures to their school yearbooks and newspapers.
Have the event one week after the inauguration to remind Obama that we are not going away. We are expecting him to address same-sex marriage, and LGBT rights in general.
Raise money towards fighting for the legalization of same-sex marriage in the courts. Students for Equality will be donating a portion of the proceeds to Lambda Legal since they are currently fighting the state of California to repeal Proposition 8. Lambda Legal has also fought for LGBT equality in many other cases, including overturning sodomy laws in the United States on a federal level. On Saturday, November 15 about 80 people stood at the Erie County Courthouse to protest Proposition 8.

The Erie event was part of a coordinated nationwide protest against the California ballot measure that would remove marriage rights for same-sex couples. Protests took place on the same day in over 300 cities, with an estimated 100,000 people taking part.

On Sunday, October 26, the Erie Gay Business Alliance held a candidate forum for US Presidential, US Congressional PA-3, PA State Senate District 49 and PA State House for districts that are in Erie County. We had about 60 people or so attend. In terms of candidates for Federal office, we had Jamie Citron, who is the Deputy LGBT Outreach coordinator for the Obama/Biden campaign, all three candidates for US Congress PA-3 - Kathy Dahlkemper (D), a representative for Phil English (R-Incumbent) and Steve Porter (I). For Pennsylvania state candidates, we had Cindy Purvis (D) for PA State Senate District 49, Jason Owen (R ) for PA State House District 3, and Rick Mitchell (D) for PA State House District 4. All of the PA state candidates who attended are the non-incumbents.

On the occasion of National Coming Out Day, Truth Wins Out released a video called “Ex-Gay = Ex-Wife.” The video features the stories of four courageous women whose families fell apart after their closeted husbands came out. This video highlights the harm of ex-gay programs from that of the spouse who gets left behind when the promised “cure” does not endure.

“Ex-gay programs love to show the wedding photos, but they never show you the divorce papers that result from such ill-conceived marriages,” said Truth Wins Out’s Executive Director, Wayne Besen. “These programs hold marriage up as the Holy Grail to heterosexuality, but the truth is, these marriages wholly fail, leaving shattered lives and broken families.”

Under warm sunny skies, the 15th Annual Pride Erie Picnic took place June 2 at the Rotary Pavilion at Presque Isle State Park. About 270 people representing many different aspects of the gay community and their supporters attended this year's event.
