2D/1N Backpacking Athens Without A Tour (Part 2) : An Unexpected Strike In Athens & A Generous Greek Lunch at Boston Cafe

Being trapped in a middle of an ongoing strike is not something we had in our minds when we arrived in Athens, Greece. We got to know about the situation at the airport when we took a public bus (X95) from the airport to Syntagma.

A Strike Downtown Leaving Many Stranded

The bus driver told everyone on the bus that the bus will not be able to drop its passengers off at Syntagma due to the ongoing strike. Thanks to the strike, the public transport in the city was crippled, leaving many locals and visitors stranded. The metro was temporarily down and only a handful of taxis were willing to ferry passengers into or out of the city centre.

Syntagma Square was literally closed and cut off from public access. My sister and I had no other options but to take the bus and drop off some 5 km away from our destination. From there, we were told that we can either travel to Syntagma Square on foot or if we are lucky, flag down a taxi that will take us there without being charged exorbitantly.

Many people were left frustrated by the situation especially visiting tourists. We were caught off guard, but felt lucky to be able to experience a Greek strike nonetheless. After all, it was not a life-threatening but an eye-opening experience. It is not often that we get to experience such an experience.

Friendly & Helpful Greeks in Athens

From where the bus dropped us off, my sister and I along with several tourists made our way to Syntagma Square on foot. We were being over confident that we could easily walk our way to the city centre.

The one thing we noticed about the people in Athens, Greece is they are very friendly and helpful. At one point, we looked lost and an elderly man who happens to walk by stopped in his track and asked us if we needed help.

Although he spoke little English, he pointed out the way and made sure that we understood his directions before bidding us goodbye. Halfway through the journey, we got tired, felt hungry and decided to stop for lunch at the first café that caught our attention.

For some reason, we decided to stray off the main street and ventured into a smaller street (Pontoirakleias Street). At the end of the street, we came across a charming little café with a lemon tree named Boston Café. My sister and I agreed to have our light lunch at the café.

The café serves a variety of sandwiches, salads, pizzas, coffee, donuts and crepes at reasonable prices. We ordered our foods and drinks at the counter and seated comfortably in the café. The café has excellent free WiFi which we used to go online and stay connected.

My sister had the banana choco crepe with orange juice while I had Caesar salad and peach tea. Both were delicious! To our delight, the owners of the café, Mr. Manoli and wife treated us a traditional dessert – a huge serving of delectable Greek custard pie (Galaktoboureko) and even gave us two bottles of chilled mineral water. We were very thankful for their generosity and kindness. This further strengthens our observation that the Greeks in Athens are friendly, helpful and kind.

My sister and I spent 2 days and 1 night exploring the historical city of Athens, Greece before flying off to the beautiful island of Santorini. Despite our short time in Athens, the city is by far, my favourite European city or travel destination apart from Santorini. Before going to Athens, I managed to search for the types of tourist scams to look out for when in Athens and have compiled a list. The flight to Athens, Greece was as charming as its city. We flew over mountains, across a bed of white fluffy clouds and across the sea before finally laying our eyes on the beautiful country and city several thousand feet below. It was such an amazing view! As always, my sister and I got ourselves the window seats to enjoy the view.

Athens International Airport (ATH)

Athens International Airport (Ελευθέριος Βενιζέλος) is Greece’s busiest airport. It is the main international airport that serves the city of Athens and the region of Attica. The airport has two terminals – the main terminal and the satellite terminal accessible by an underground link from the main terminal.

The main terminal building handles the all intra-Schengen flights, as well as several non-Schengen flights. The airlines’ check-in counters are located in the Main Terminal and it has three separate levels; one for arrivals, one for departures and a food court level complete with a view of the eastern runway.

Public Transportation To/From Athens International Airport (ATH) – Syntagma Square

The city of Athens, Greece has excellent public transportation ranging from the buses, metros and taxis. As a result of that, getting from one place to another in Athens is relatively easy and convenient.

However, during a strike, the metros, buses and even the taxi service will be crippled and visitors will be left stranded in the city unless they are able to find other alternatives. My sister and I were lucky enough to experience a strike on the day we arrived in Athens and I will share our experience in the next blog post.

Public Bus

From Athens International Airport, we made our way to Syntagma Square by bus because not only is the fare cheap, we get to enjoy scenic views of Athens city too. Besides the bus, one can also take the metro or taxi to the city, but naturally those will cost slightly more.

From the Arrivals in Athens International Airport, we followed the signboards and made our way towards the Transit/Busses area. The signboards are written in both Greek and English, therefore we did not encounter any difficulties finding our way through the airport.

At the Transit/Busses area, there are several designated bus stops. We bought our bus tickets at the bus tickets sales booth (ΠΩΛHΣH EIΣITHPIΩN ΛEΩΦOPEIΩN). After that, we waited at the bus stop numbered X95 AEPOΛIMENAΣ AΘHNΩN – ΣYNTAΓMA (Syntagma)

The trip to/from the airport – Syntagma is €5 per person, per journey. We validated the bus tickets at the ticket validation machine on the bus (strictly compulsory, failure to do so will result in a hefty fine or imprisonment)

The journey from Athens International Airport to/from Syntagma Square takes about 60 minutes, depending on the traffic conditions.

Take Metro Line 3 (Aghia Marina – Douk. Plakentias - Athens International Airport) which connects Athens International Airport with the city centre. The trains run every 30 minutes, 7 days a week from 6:30 am to 11:30 pm. The trip to/from the airport to Syntagma station (Athens centre) takes about 40 minutes. The metro ticket fares are as follows:

One-way ticket for one person: €8
Return ticket for one person: €14 (valid within 48 hours)
One-way ticket for 2 persons: €14
One-way ticket for 3 persons: €20
One-way half price tickets (for students younger than 25, youngsters 6-18 or people older than 65): €4.00
Children under 6 years : Free

Taxis are available at the designated taxi waiting area at Athens International Airport and around Athens city. A taxi to/from the airport to Syntagma Square costs a flat rate of:

€35 from 5:00 am to midnight
€50 from midnight to 5:00 am

Do take note that the charge/fare is determined by the time of arrival at the destination and includes all applicable surcharges and extras.

After the long walk in Kata Tjuta, our group headed back to our camp site to pack our belongings and move to a new camp site – Kings Creek Station, stopping by Curtain Springs along the way.

A Pit Stop At Curtain Springs

Located just 100km east of Ayers Rock or 360km southwest of Alice Springs, most visitors to Ayers Rock and Kings Canyon will make a pit stop at Curtain Springs to refuel, replenish their supplies, have a warm meal and/or a good night’s rest.

The establishment offers a choice of ensuite and budget rooms as well as powered and unpowered campgrounds for rent. The powered campsites start at $40 per night whereas the unpowered campsites are free of charge. However, there is a charge per person per shower for everyone using the campgrounds.

The price for the ensuite rooms (dated 2015) is as follows:

Ensuite double/twin room ($170 a night)
Ensuite triple room ($200 a night)
Ensuite quad room ($240 a night)
Ensuite family room ($270 a night, additional $25 per bed for the use of the fold out beds)

The price for the budget rooms with shared bathroom (dated 2015) is as follows:

A Shop & Outback Cattle Station

There is a small shop in Curtain Springs where visitors/guests can buy reasonably priced souvenirs, sandwiches, soft drinks, ice-creams, foods, basic groceries, tea and coffee as well as alcohol both to drink in or takeaway.

Curtain Springs also happens to be a cattle station, supplying quality beef and good steak to its guests/customers. Initially, the station started with 1,500 head of cattle but the number has grown through the years.

A Close Encounter With An Emu

I have seen the picture of an emu on the sides of the Emu Run Tours' van and was not expecting to see a live emu in the outback, but I did – I saw a live emu in Curtain Springs! Rhea told us that there is a pair of emus in the area and we were supposed to look out for them, so we did.

One of the emu was in an enclosure located not too far away from the entrance. The other was left to roam the surrounding area, but we were not lucky enough to see it. It must have hid itself from us, fearing that we might catch and eat it.

Safari Tents at Kings Creek Station

We continued our journey and arrived at Kings Creek Station in the evening to see rows of safari tents lined up neatly on the land. The station lies 36km from the magnificent Kings Canyon (Watarrka) and is set amongst majestic desert oaks.

At our station, Rhea distributed swags to everyone. A swag is made from strong canvas, sewn like a large sleeping bag with a comfortable sponge mattress and a sleeping bag inside – providing warmth, comfort and security. It was my second time sleeping in a swag. The first time was at Emu Run Tours Outback Station 1. Read the story here.

This time, we had the option to either sleep in the comfort of a safari tent or under the blanket of stars. Do not get me wrong, it is safe to sleep out in the open. Daphne and I chose to sleep in a safari tent just for the sake of the experience.

Scrumptious Outback BBQ & Roasting Marshmallows Over The Bonfire

While we were busy settling in our safari tents or setting up our swags under the shady desert oaks, Rhea prepared our dinner. This time, we had a scrumptious BBQ dinner! It was not long before the aroma of grilled savoury sausages and slices of marinated camel meat and beef lingered the air.

Some of the group members were kind enough to offer their help while the rest of us waited patiently for the food to be served. Besides grilled meat, we had generous servings of fresh salad and fruits too. Cold orange juice complimented the dinner perfectly.

In the end, everyone was busy eating and no one took photos of the food. After that, with our stomachs full, we sat by the bonfire and had a bonding session. Encouraged by their grandmother, the children sang ‘Kookaburra Sits in the Old Gum Tree’ song – I love that song! Everyone cheered and happily sang along. The fun part, we roasted marshmallows over the fire too! It tastes good!

Stargazing The Southern Night Sky

The Australian outback is one of the best places to explore the galaxy of stars in the night sky. The clear night sky and minimal light pollution allows us to view the stars and planets like we have never seen them before.

In the dark, Rhea gave us an insightful astronomy tour – she pointed out the location of the Southern Cross and the constellations in the sky. We spotted Libra, Orion and Scorpio. She also talked about the Milky Way. I personally saw a shooting star and made a wish. It was truly a remarkable sight, an unforgettable experience! After that, all of us retired for the night in preparation for a busy day tomorrow.

3D/2N Uluru Camping Tour With Emu Run Tours (Part 5) : Breathtaking View At The Valley of the Winds & Karingana Lookout, Kata Tjuta

The Karingana Lookout through the Valley of the Winds walk offers a magnificent view of the landscape of Kata Tjuta. Although the walk was a little challenging, we managed to overcome it. We walked at a comfortable pace and drank at least 1.5 litres of water to keep the risk of dehydration at bay. Other warnings, safety precautions and the do’s and don’ts can be found in my previous blog post available here.

The Formation Of The Domes Of Kata Tjuta

The sandstone domes of Kata Tjuta are formed approximately 300 million years ago. When the huge slab of rock that is Kata Tjuta was being folded and faulted, fractures cracked through the rock. Water then seeped down the cracks and eroded the rock to form valleys and gorges that spilt the rock slab into blocks.

Through time, weathering and erosion wore away the rocks above the cracks to produce the rounded domes we see today. Hence, the Pitjantjatjara name Kata Tjuta which means “many heads” was given to the unique rock formation.

The Valley Of The Winds

From afar, the domes of Kata Tjuta looked relatively small in size but as we got closer, its massive size is revealed. After crossing the flat and wide open terrain, we came to an opening between two domes known as the Valley of the Winds.

Like its name, the Valley of the Winds is a very windy geological area. We endured constant blow of strong winds as we made our way through the valley. It made walking difficult especially if one is going against the wind’s direction.

The howling of the strong winds passing through the valley echoed throughout our journey. Whether we enjoyed or loathed it, it was indeed an unforgettable experience – uniquely at the Valley of the Winds, Kata Tjuta. I happen to enjoy the strong winds as long as it does not send piles of dust and debris flying straight into my face and eyes or knock me off track.

A Steep Climb To The Top To Reach Karingana Lookout

The most challenging part of the walk I would say is the steep climb to the top of the valley to reach Karingana Lookout. I remember having to keep my balance as I walked carefully across the hundreds of loose rocks on the steep trail, besides battling the strong gusts of wind.

After much effort – huffing and puffing along the way, the group and I made it to the top in one piece. We finally reached the scenic Karingana Lookout in Kata Tjuta! There, we took a 15-minute break to catch our breaths and enjoy the panoramic view.

Rhea, our Emu Run tour guide distributed a fruit (an apple or orange, I cannot remember) and an energy bar to everyone in the group to munch on. While some were snacking, others were busy taking photographs of the impressive view in front and all around us.

Awe-Inspiring Towering Red Rocks & Outback Plant Life

Standing in front of the towering red rocks of Kata Tjuta, I was made to realise how small we are on this planet, and in the universe. I felt a huge sense of gratitude for being able to experience first-hand the indescribable beauty and wonders of the Australian outback and desert landscape in Kata Tjuta.

After that, we continued our walk downhill and made our way back to the parking lot. Along the way, we passed by interesting-looking desert plants that provide shade for us from the blistering heat. Once again, we walked on a stony, rugged and isolated path littered with loose rocks of all shapes and sizes.

In the end, all of us made it back to the parking lot slightly past noon. We felt tired, but happy to have completed the 5.5 km Karingana Walk in Kata Tjuta, Central Australia. We took nothing but photographs as our souvenirs in an effort to preserve the land for the generations to come. As a Native American quote goes, "We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children."

Athens Travel Guide & Tourist Scams That You Should Know

My love for Greek mythology began when I was young. I remember watching the cartoon ‘The Odyssey’ on television that sparked my interest in Greek mythology and history. Through the cartoon, I had insights about ancient Greece, Greek gods and goddesses, Odysseus’s (also known as Ulysses in Roman myth) epic voyage, and the mythical beings he encountered such as the Sirens, Cyclops and the lonely Circe.

As I grow up, I became familiarised with Greece’s history. National Geographic history channel and varsity history lessons introduced me to the city of Athens and Sparta, great Greek philosophers such as Plato, Aristotle and Socrates, Greek gods and goddess Zeus, Poseidon, Aphrodite and Athena, and ancient historical sites like the Acropolis of Athens.

But, seeing documentaries and pictures in the pages of books and magazines is not enough for me. I wish to be there and see it with my very own eyes. So, when the opportunity came, I did not hesitate to book a flight ticket to the beautiful city of Athens in Greece – a decision I have not regretted at all.

Athens Travel Guide & Top 7 Tourist Scams That You Should Know

Practically every touristy destination on this planet, including Athens has its own set of tourist scams that we should be aware of. The following are the 7 tourist scams that you should know when in Athens, Greece:

1. Buying A Drink For The Girl(s) At The Bar Scam

This scam usually takes place in a bar. Their modus operandi goes like this: An unsuspecting man enters the bar. A friendly man approaches the man and starts a small conversation with him. He is then introduced to a pretty girl at the bar. The pretty girl asks the unsuspecting man to buy her a drink.

The drink is priced exorbitantly, ranging around €50 - €100. When the unsuspecting man buys her a drink, he is slapped with a whopping bill afterwards. If the unsuspecting man argues over the bill, the men in the bar swell up in size and use the threat of violence to convince the unsuspecting man to pay.

Another version is where a man will approach an unsuspecting man on the street, make small talk and cordially invite him over to his bar for a drink. He will then execute the same scam onto the unsuspecting man.

2. Cruise & Hotel Trick Instead Of Ferry Tickets Scam

This is a variation of the scam mentioned above. A friendly stranger approaches an unsuspecting man/woman on the street. He makes small talk in an effort to get the man/woman’s attention and trust. He then offers to take the man/woman to his friend's or sister’s travel agency to buy ferry tickets to a quiet island.

At the travel agency, they tell the unsuspecting man/woman that the tickets are sold out or not available and try to sell or convince the unsuspecting man/woman to buy a fancy hotel stay on one of the Cyclades islands or a pricey cruise package instead.

3. Pickpockets

Athens, Greece is a hotspot for pickpockets thanks to the huge number of tourists and illegal immigrants in the city. The easiest places to get pick-pocketed are at the metro, public buses, in a waiting line at the Acropolis, and even while looking at the flights board at the airport.

Pickpockets are opportunistic preys. A moment of negligence is all they need to strike. If someone stumbles into you in a crowd, chances are they have your belongings – a phone, purse, wallet or camera. So, watch out for your surroundings and keep an eye on your belongings.

In the Metro trains, besides looking out for the average-looking pickpockets, do look out for three or more well-dressed men in suits, slacks and good shoes standing together between you and the door. They will purposely block the way so that you need to push through them to pass. When you do, you will be pick-pocketed by one of them. Be careful and avoid passing through these group of men.

4. Common Thieves

In Athens, thieves are known to watch and follow unsuspecting victims withdrawing money from the ATM machines in or near the metro stations, especially in Omonia, Metaxourgio, Monastiraki and Syntagma.

Then, they will wait for an opportunity to strike – usually just before the doors of the metro closes, when they will grab the victim’s belongings before they know what is happening and exit just before the train's doors closes, leaving the victim on the moving train.

5. What’s The Time? Mobile Phone Snatcher

A lot of people in Athens have also had their mobile phones stolen by scammers asking what time it is. When the unsuspecting victim takes out his/her mobile phone to look, they snatch it and run away.

If a stranger comes up to you and ask for the time, just tell that person that you do not know the time. Most people wear a watch or own a mobile phone these days, so they would be able to tell the time. When asked this question by a stranger, there is a good chance that you are being scammed. Just ignore that person for your own good.

6. Taxi Ride Scams

Although there are honest taxi drivers in Athens, it is not uncommon for taxi drivers to take advantage of tourists not knowing their way around the city. They will overcharge, take on another person while driving or take one to a hotel, tour operator or restaurant where they get a commission from.

To avoid this, ask the locals how much the fare will cost from one place to another and board a taxi that charges the same amount of fare. Also, demand the taxi drivers to turn on the meter. Do not board a taxi that does not use a meter. Refuse their suggestions and firmly insist that they take you to your intended destination.

In Athens, all taxis are required to provide, upon request, a receipt. The receipt should indicate the taxi fare, registration number and the driver’s name. Be sure to report errant taxi drivers to the police.

7. Bogus Policemen

These plain-clothes police impersonators will stop unsuspecting tourists on the street. They will then identify themselves as policemen by briefly showing a fake police badge. After that, they will ask to see your passport or identity card.

Next, they will ask to see the money you have on you. The reason they will give is there are many counterfeit money around and they want to see if you have any. After checking, they will return your passport and money and leave with some money they have taken from you.

To avoid being a victim, ask to see their police badge again and ask which police station they belong to. Inform them that although they can check your passport or identity card, they do not have the right to check your money. Be firm and warn them that you will proceed to call the police or stop a police car. If you are a victim of such scam, make a police report as soon as possible.

The morning after we visited the Black Sand Beach of Perissa, my sister and I packed our belongings and checked out of our room before 12pm. Read my review of our Captain’s Budget Studio for 2 at Maryloujohn Villas (Part 1) here and (Part 2) here. John was kind enough to allow us to store our belongings at the villa for several hours while we went for a walk around the area.

One Last Stroll In Peaceful, Beautiful Oia

We were scheduled to take the night flight back to Athens, therefore there was still time for us to take one last stroll and enjoy our remaining time in Oia. We even took the opportunity to pose and snap some pretty amazing photos for memories.

As mentioned in my earlier blog posts, Santorini receives the least visitors during the cold autumn-winter months. For that reason, we had an enjoyable time taking photographs without being photobombed by anyone or anything. It was something we were grateful of. To read my travel guide to Santorini, click here.

The good thing about visiting the island during summer is that all hotels, guesthouses, tour operators as well as restaurants and cafes will be open for business. So, generally one will have more options to choose from as compared to during autumn when Santorini island is quiet.

The not so good thing is the island will be overcrowded with people and donkeys too! Weigh both situations and choose when you would like to travel to Santorini wisely as it will either make or break your holiday. The following are the remaining photos of Oia for memories. Delectable Dessert In Fira – A Serving Of Chillbox Greek Frozen Yoghurt Ice-Cream

Greek yoghurt is something to die for – it is simply delicious! It has a creamier, thicker texture than the average yoghurt. For that reason, it tastes better too and what better way to enjoy it than frozen, topped with generous amounts of fresh fruits and other delectable toppings?

That said, there is no better place on Earth to enjoy Greek frozen yoghurt ice-cream than in Greece. Greek frozen yoghurt ice-cream can easily be found all over Greece, even on the Cyclades islands. A serving of frozen yoghurt ice-cream could easily beat the scorching heat of the day or turn a frown upside down.

While sightseeing in Fira, we came across a shop called Chillbox that serves Greek frozen yoghurt ice-cream with a wide variety of toppings. Since it was a hot day, we could not resist the urge to eat something cold to bring down the heat. Therefore, we decided to order and share a generous serving of the Greek frozen yoghurt ice-cream – a decision we did not regret at all.

The cold dessert is charged by weight, about €2.40 for every 100g. We had both the natural and banana flavoured Greek frozen yoghurt ice-cream topped with slices of kiwi, candied raspberries, colourful chocolate sprinkles, and more. I admit, we kind of went overboard with the toppings, but it tasted so good!! We are officially fans of Chillbox Greek frozen yoghurt ice-cream!

Good Bye Dreamy Santorini, See You Again In The Future!

We happily explored the town of Fira while enjoying mouthfuls our delicious Greek frozen yoghurt ice-cream. The town is busier than Oia or any other towns in Santorini. There were more people in Fira as compared to Oia due to its central location and facilities.

After that, we bid good bye to Fira and boarded the local evening bus from the central bus station to Santorini National Airport (JTR). The bus fare was €1.80 per person. At the airport, we patiently waited for the arrival of our Ryanair plane to Athens International Airport (ATH) and we had a safe flight back to Athens, Greece. That marked the end of our 3D/2N Backpacking Santorini Without A Tour journey – a dreamy getaway of a lifetime! To sum it up, we had a wonderful and memorable time on the island paradise. Although the island was slightly deserted when we were there, we enjoyed the undisturbed peace and quiet very much. May the information shared here benefits travellers out there. Perissa is famous for its black sand, crystalline waters and wooden deck chairs with straw umbrellas lined up neatly along the beach for visitors to enjoy. The beautiful beach paradise is one of the must visit beaches in Santorini. Other notable beaches on the island are the Red Beach, Kamari, Perivolos, Vlychada, Agios Georgios, Cape Columbo, Monolithos, the White Beach, and Vourvoulos.

The Ancient City Of Thira

Mesa Vouno is the name of the enormous rocky mountain that rises from the sea in the background of Perissa. The mountain lies in between of the beach of Perissa from Kamari, separating the two unique beaches from one another. Visitors are left spellbound by the stunning view of the rocky mountain especially when it shines in the dark.

On the top of the mountain lies the ruin of the ancient city of Thira, said to have originally been a colony of the Spartans. Visitors can climb up there from Perissa in about an hour, following a gravelly trail that zigzags its way up the barren slope to the Sellada Pass that joins Mesa Vouno to the biggest mountain on the island, Profitis Elias.

The entrance fee to the archaeological site of Ancient Thira is €2 per person. If one has the time and energy to spend, the historical site is well worth a visit. My sister and I decided to visit Ancient Thira at another time due to the lack of time and improper attire.

Local Bus Ride From Oia To Perissa (Via Fira)

The beach paradise is situated 15 km southeast of Fira, extending for 7 km on the south-eastern side of Santorini. Visitors can easily get there by car, quad bikes or like us, by bus – taking the local bus ride from Fira to Perissa.

I mentioned in one of my earlier blog posts that there is a well-organised public bus service on the island of Santorini, connecting the airport to Fira (where the central bus station is located) and various destinations on the island. Read the info and get the respective timetables plus bus fares for the busses here.

That said, my sister and I made our journey from Oia to Perissa, happily changing busses at the central bus station in Fira. The scenic journey from Oia to Fira, then to Perissa took about an hour. The bus ride from Oia to Fira costs €1.80 per person (one way), whereas the bus ride from Fira to Perissa costs €2.30 per person (one way).

In Perissa, the local bus dropped its passengers at the bus stop located across the road of The Blue Flag Restaurant. The establishment also happens to be a boat station offering boat rides to the Red Beach and Kamari. At the seafront of the restaurant lies the famous Black Sand Beach.

The Black Sand Beach – Of Fine Black Sand Grains & Smooth Colourful Pebbles

It was our first time being in Perissa, and standing on a black sand beach. So naturally, my sister and I were very excited to be at the Black Sand Beach and cannot wait to explore the area, soak our feet in the water and play in the sand! Like little girls, we hurried across the road towards the beach.

On the beach, we spent an entire minute standing in awe of the beautiful scenery before us; breathing in the fresh air, enjoying the cold sea breeze and basking in the peace and serenity surrounding us. We felt as if time stood still when we were there.

The sandy beach, like its name, is black in colour. The black sand grains are fine and smooth to the touch. However, we were in for a surprise! As we walked further down the beach, the fine sand grains are replaced by smooth pebbles of a variety of colours, shapes and sizes. It was a one-of-a-kind sight – uniquely Perissa.

Now, although those pebbles are fun to watch and play with, they are not fun to walk on barefoot at midday, especially during hot summer days where the pebbles are scorching hot to the touch. Do take note of that especially when one plans to visit the Black Sand Beach during summer months.

The Little Mermaid Rock & The Warm Aegean Sea

My sister and I visited Santorini during the late autumn where it was cold but surprisingly, the crystal-clear waters of the Aegean Sea was relatively warm! We thought it would be cold, but a dip into the sea proved otherwise. Needless to say, we had a splashing time at the beach.

Unfortunately, no mermaids were spotted during our visit to the Black Sand Beach. The Little Mermaid Rock is actually a name I gave to a cluster of big rocks lying on the black sand beach. Since it looks like the spot where The Little Mermaid would sit and sing her heart out as she admires the beauty of the sea, I decided to gave it that name.

Whether there are mermaids or not, it is undeniable that the cluster of rocks make a wonderful spot for photography – featuring the Black Sand Beach on the foreground and a glimpse of Mesa Vouno rocky mountain and the beautiful Agean Sea in the background. The photos taken at the The Little Mermaid Rock serve as a wonderful memento of our amazing time at the Black Sand Beach, Perissa.

Beautiful Blue Domed Churches, Lavish Greek Restaurants / Taverns & Sunset By The Beach

There are many restaurants and taverns that serve good traditional Greek and international cuisine to visitors of the beach in Perissa. Sadly, I could not recommend any particular restaurants in the area for my sister and I did not patronise any of the establishments there.

We did however, explored the surrounding areas of the beach that lead us to the discovery of an interesting blue domed church located at the corner of the road / junction. It is the Church of Holy Cross, among the largest churches in Santorini. Unlike the churches that I have seen in Oia and Fira, this blue domed church in Perissa looks slightly different; it has an interesting-looking bell tower / minaret that captured my attention.

Since it was getting late, we did not stay long at the church and hurried back to the Black Sand Beach to watch the sunset. It was a priceless experience, one that we will remember for life. After that, we made our way towards the bus stop and took the second last bus back to Fira (5.30pm). At the central bus station in Fira, we took a bus back Oia (6.50pm) where we had a simple dinner and a good night’s rest.

3D/2N Uluru Camping Tour With Emu Run Tours (Part 4) : 5.5 KM Karingana Lookout Walk At Kata Tjuta Through The Valley Of The Winds

Kata Tjuta (also known as The Olgas) means 'many heads' in Anangu Aboriginal language. Kata Tjuta’s extraordinary landscape encompasses 36 sandstone domes rising out of the desert plain of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park in Australia’s Red Centre. The highest dome (Mount Olga) rises 546 m above the plain, 198 m higher than Uluru.

Kata Tjuta’s ancient rock formations are believed to be around 500 million years old. The site is sacred under Tjukurpa and Anangu men’s law and many of the legends surrounding the site are kept secret. Uluru and Kata Tjuta are the two major landmarks within the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park.

Kata Tjuta Walks & Warnings

For your info, there are 4 types of walks to choose from at Kata Tjuta and they are:

Walpa Gorge Walk (Grade 3 – Moderate) 2.6 km
Karu Lookout Walk (Grade 3 – Moderate) 2.2 km
Karingana Lookout Walk (Grade 4 – Difficult) 5.5 km
Full Circuit Walk (Grade 4 – Difficult) 7.4 km

Please bear in mind that all walks in Kata Tjuta cover long distance trails over stony, rugged and isolated terrains. Heat exhaustion and dehydration risks are common at Kata Tjuta even in mild weather. Therefore, it is wise to drink plenty of water, stay cool and walk safely at all times.

During hot weather, try to finish the walk by 11 am. For safety reasons, the track beyond Karu Lookout is closed from 11 am when the forecast or actual temperature is 36 degrees Celsius or above. In case of an emergency, use an emergency radio alarm to contact a ranger for help during park opening hours.

The 5.5 km Karingana Lookout Walk

After watching the sunrise over Uluru and having a glimpse of Kata Tjuta’s extraordinary landscape from the Kata Tjuta dune viewing boardwalk / platform, we were ready to take on the challenge of the day – the 5.5 km Karingana Lookout Walk at Kata Tjuta!

Unlike the 10 km base walk we did on our own in Uluru, this time we were accompanied by our tour guide, Rhea throughout the entire trail. This is because it is a difficult Grade 4 walk, covering a distance of 5.5 km over stony, rugged and isolated terrains.

After a brief safety briefing, we embarked on our journey as early as possible to make full use of the cool and comfortable morning condition. The first part of the walk was easy – over relatively flat and wide open terrain. We walked past interesting-looking desert shrubs and plants, similar to those in Uluru. In the background were the spectacular sandstone domes of Kata Tjuta. It looked impressive!

A Physically Challenging But Greatly Rewarding Scenic Trail

The level of difficulty of the trail elevated as we got closer to the Valley of the Winds, Kata Tjuta. The second part of the walk was over tight, uneven, rocky terrain littered with loose stones and boulders of all sizes and shapes. Do take note that proper walking shoes, plus strong ankles and knees are needed for this part of the walk.

As the sun rose higher, so does the temperature. We made sure we drank plenty of water or isotonic drinks along the way to stay hydrated. Some of us wore sunglasses, long sleeves and a hat to protect us from the sun’s harmful UV rays. All of us applied generous amounts of sunscreen lotion to reduce the risk of getting sunburn or skin cancer at the end of the day.

Despite the difficulty of trail, the view was simply amazing – better than Uluru! Kata Tjuta offers its visitors a different and unique desert landscape to enjoy. At one point, the desert landscape looked like those on planet Mars. We made several short stops to rest and enjoy the moment; be in awe of Mother Nature’s beauty.

What better way to enjoy Santorini’s breathtaking caldera and Aegean Sea view than to savour delicious authentic Greek dishes? During our exploration on the terraced cliff in Oia, my sister and I came across several restaurants and taverns that serve good Greek foods with an accompanying breathtaking view for guests to enjoy.

Charming Skala Restaurant (Σκαια Εστιατορια)

Among those, one particular restaurant caught our attention – Skala Restaurant (Σκαια Εστιατορια). What makes Skala Restaurant slightly different from the rest is the restaurant is perched on the edge of a steep cliff that drops down 800 feet into the Aegean Sea, giving the dreamy illusion that the restaurant is floating above the clouds.

Besides having one of the best views in Oia, Santorini, the restaurant also happens to be sitting on the site of the village’s old bakery, with the entire restaurant compound built around an old brick oven that adds a touch of history to the setting and ambience of the restaurant.

Our Beautiful Greek Food Affair

Greek cuisine is influenced by the Mediterranean culinary that makes wide use of olive oil, lemon juice, fresh vegetables and herbs, various grains and bread, wine, seafood, and various meats such as lamb, poultry, and rabbit.

My sister and I fell in love with Greek cuisine after having a taste of it in Athens, Greece and Fira, Santorini. Since then, we try to enjoy as many authentic Greek dishes as we can during our time in Greece. Cooked with love and using the freshest ingredients the land and sea has to offer, Greek cuisine is one of the healthiest and mouth-watering.

The menu at Skala Restaurant is varied, offering a wide variety of authentic Greek dishes from hors d’oeuvres, salads, pastas, seafood, grilled meat and desserts to choose from, at a reasonable and affordable price. On top of that, the service was fast and friendly too.

A Scrumptious Greek Lunch For Two

At the restaurant, we were seated at the corner of the restaurant that offers not only a breathtaking view of the caldera and Aegean Sea, but the charming terraced cliff of Oia too. With recommendations from the waiter, we ordered a serving of the chicken fillet with cream, masticha and pistachios served with rice (€16) and grilled sea bream served with fresh vegetables (€16). 2 glasses of iced tea costs €6.

While waiting for our food to arrive, we happily enjoyed the cool sea breeze while soaking up the soothing ambience around us. We were the first to arrive for lunch, but it was not long before more and more guests arrived and filled up the restaurant. Do take note that Skala Restaurant will usually be fully booked/full house during lunch and dinner hours, especially during summer.

The chicken and fish was perfectly seasoned and cooked; the meat was moist and flavourful. My sister enjoyed the chicken with rice dish very much. I can say the same for myself. I love and enjoyed the grilled fish, de-boned by the chef and served with fresh vegetables – capsicum, onion, cucumber, tomato, olives and capers. It was scrumptious!

Dining at Skala Restaurant in Oia was an unforgettable experience for us. Not only did we get to enjoy a picturesque view of Santorini, we savoured mouth-watering, authentic Greek dishes too while soaking up the good vibes around us.

3D/2N Uluru Camping Tour With Emu Run Tours (Part 3) : Sunrise Over Uluru & Our First Look At Kata Tjuta's Extraordinary Landscape

The next day, we woke up as early as 5am in the morning to get ready and made our way to Kata Tjuta dune viewing boardwalk to watch the sunrise over Uluru (Ayers Rock). The journey took us about 30 - 40 minute.

From the parking area, we walked on the designated trail towards the boardwalk / designated viewing platform to watch the sunrise over Uluru (Ayers Rock). There was a huge crowd of people gathering at the viewing platform when we arrived, all eager to witness the sunrise.

Everyone tried to get a good spot on the viewing platform to watch and enjoy the sunset in peace. Thanks to my petite build, I managed to slip through the crowd standing at the front, sat on the edge of the platform and waited patiently for the sun to rise over Uluru (Ayers Rock).

In sheer darkness, I could see the outline of Uluru (Ayers Rock) before me. Minutes later, the sun rose over the megalith structure, creating a spectacular sight for all to witness and be in awe of. Our First Look At Kata Tjuta’s Extraordinary Landscape (The Living Desert)

On the same platform, we had our very first look at Kata Tjuta’s extraordinary landscape and its surroundings. The name Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) means ‘many heads’ in Anangu language. They believe that Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) was made by their ancestors in the Tjukurpa (creation time).

The land that surrounds Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) is truly remarkable. Despite poor rainfall and poor soils, a great diversity of life has adapted to survive the harsh desert conditions. The vegetation here supports many different plants and animals.

In general, Kata Tjuta’s extraordinary landscape is divided into several important geological terrains:

Pila – the pila (sand plain) is dominated by kurkara (desert oak) and tjapi (spinefex)
Puti – puti (scrubland) grows in the foothills and surrounds Kata Tjuta. It is dominated by wanari (mulga)
Puli – rocky areas have their own particular habitat supporting many specialised species such as kanyala (hill kangaroo) and mingkulpa (native tobacco) that is found only in shady areas after the rain
Karu – karu (creek beds) are found within puli supporting species that require more water than other desert plants such as large eucalypts

What’s a trip to Santorini without taking that iconic postcard shot of Santorini, featuring the famous three blue domes in Oia? With that thought on our heads, we set out on a mission to locate the very spot of that iconic landmark in Oia, besides discovering the wonderful sights Oia has in-stored for us.

A Spectacular Sunset & Blue Hour From The Old Castle Of Oia

After we kept our belongings safely in our room, my sister and I made our way out to the main pedestrian marble street in Oia and set out to explore the island on foot. Since we visited Santorini during the low nearing the off season, most of the establishments on the island were closed for business. However, the island remains a beauty and offers many opportunities for photography – minus the overwhelming crowd of people which is great!

We walked till we came to the end of the island and instead of finding the iconic three blue domes, we found ourselves looking at the site of what looks like the ruins of a centuries-old castle or fortress. Many people were seen taking photographs and enjoying the 360-degree picturesque view of the sea and island. Later, I found out that the old castle of Oia is also known as Fort Londsa.

The old castle or Fort Londsa happens to be the perfect spot in Oia to watch the sun go down in the horizon, revealing a spectacular and magical sight of the town of Oia at dusk, showcasing the iconic cave houses and windmills in the background. It is said that the best place to watch the sunset in Santorini is in Oia and I could not agree more with that. Do take note that the spot will be crammed with people, especially during summer where people flock to the island for a holiday.

Finding The Iconic Three Blue Domes in Oia

The next day, my sister and I continued our quest to look for the iconic three blue domes in Oia. We spotted the blue domes when we were enjoying the sunset view from the old castle a.k.a Fort Londsa. The blue domes are located on the steep cliff overlooking the caldera. Spotting the blue domes from afar was easy, but getting to its location was not an easy task.

Our quest for the iconic three blue domes made us walked through a labyrinth of narrow cobbled paths on the steep cliff that twist and turn in a never-ending maze of confusion. There were no signboards directing us to the location of the blue domes. We merely trusted our instincts and guessed the correct path. As a matter of fact, by sheer luck or coincidence, a street dog actually showed us the correct entrance that leads us to the right path from the main pedestrian marble street in Oia.

After some time, we finally found the location of the iconic three blue domes! As pictured on the postcards, the blue domes stood magnificently and looked astonishing right before our eyes. It was a sight to behold! We met a young couple there who told us that they took 5 days and has travelled all over the entire island in search of the iconic three blue domes on the island. Little did they know that the iconic three blue domes are located in Oia. Thankfully, my sister and I managed to find it on our second day in Oia.

Directions To The Iconic Three Blue Domes' Location

The iconic three blue domes are located below a row of buildings on the steep cliff in Oia. It is an approximately 3-minute walk from the Oia Caldera Square (where stood the Church of Panagia Platsani). From the square, turn right and walk along the marbled main pedestrian street. Turn left at Lotza Restaurant. The iconic three blue domes are just below and to the left of Lotza Restaurant.

Alternatively, from the square, turn right and walk past a small church. Turn left at the second lane where you will see a sign for Aspaki Hotel. Once you are standing behind the church, you will be able to see the iconic three blue domes below and to the right. Good luck and have fun looking for the iconic three blue domes in Oia! ;-)

Sunrise in Oia is a breathtaking phenomenon, an unforgettable experience; it captivates the mind, stimulates the body and enriches the soul. Besides watching the spectacular sunsets, watching the sunrises in Oia should be on one’s must do list too for a very good reason.

Early morning in Oia, Santorini, the air was fresh and cool. The thick blanket of misty morning fog rolled in gracefully from the Aegean Sea towards island and the caldera, creating a surreal scene. The entire town of Oia was still asleep as the sun rose quietly in the horizon, spreading its warm, illuminating rays all over the island.

Morning dews made the main pedestrian street in Oia slippery and wet, but that did not stop us from going out and having a good time. As we strolled leisurely on the marbled street while enjoying the peaceful atmosphere, we made several stops to enjoy the sunrise and took several beautiful photographs of the scenery for memories.

The Church Of Panagia Platsani At Oia Caldera Square

During our walk, we discovered a beautiful church at the Oia Caldera Square. It is the Church of Panagia Platsani. The church was originally constructed inside the walls of the Castle of Oia, but it was moved to the square after an earthquake damaged it in 1956.

The church is dedicated to the Akathist Hymn of the Most Holy Theotokos. The white-washed building features a blue-dome, arched windows and a tower of bells. Unfortunately, the church was closed, so we did not manage to take a look inside the church.

Dreamy Cycladic Architecture & Steep Cobbled Steps in Oia

Awe-inspiring Cycladic architecture of pastel coloured or white-washed walls with bright blue domes, doors and windows on buildings can be found throughout the beautiful Greek islands. The dreamy blue and white colour combination reminds people of the undisputed beauty of Santorini; clear blue skies and fluffy white clouds, the cobalt sea of the Aegean and the white gentle waves.

The picturesque view of the tiered cliff with built-in Captain and cave houses of various sizes sitting along the caldera is simply breathtaking! We found ourselves admiring the architecture of the buildings as we explored the narrow and steep cobbled steps on the island. If one is lucky, he/she will have an encounter with a herd of mules/donkeys walking up or down the path.

While walking on the narrow and steep cobbled path along the cliff in Oia, be sure to watch out for the heaps of stinky mule/donkey droppings along the path, especially along the mule/donkey trail. The sight and stench of the mule/donkey droppings will definitely be a part of one’s unforgettable memories of Santorini.

One of the perks of staying on the main pedestrian street instead of on the cliff in Oia is we got to enjoy a breathtaking 360 degrees view of the flat farmland, caldera and Aegean Sea during sunrise and sunset, thanks to our elevated location. Besides offering beautiful rooms for guests to stay, Maryloujohn Villas also provides open-air courtyards and sky terraces for guests to sit back, relax and enjoy the view peacefully.

Oia, Santorini is one of the most photographed places in Greece, if not the world for a very good reason. Cycladic whitewashed houses, blue-domed churches and a labyrinth of narrow cobbled streets tier the cliff in an impressive manner, offering a spectacular view of the volcano of Palia, Nea Kameni and the island of Thirassia. That makes Oia the best place to watch the sunrise and sunset on the island of Santorini.

Every morning, my sister and I woke up early just to watch the morning fog roll in from the Aegean Sea during sunrise, from the comforts of the sky terrace at Maryloujohn Villas. As the sun rises in the horizon, rays of warm sunlight illuminated the blanket of fog hanging over the sea and the caldera, thus creating a memorable, magical sight for us to enjoy and admire.

One of the mornings, we prepared a hearty breakfast and enjoyed it with a glass of red wine while sitting at the sky terrace with a view overlooking the caldera and the Aegean Sea. Another morning, we lazed on the wooden deck chair, daydreamed and enjoyed the cool sea breeze. There was nothing much for us to do because most of the establishments on the island are closed during the low season.

Shopping For Groceries in Oia

As mentioned in the previous blog post, there is a small but sufficient mini market (Village Supermarket a.k.a Express Market) nearby Maryloujohn Villas. It is located at the back of the property, just by the paved road of Oia (opposite of Saint George local bus stop). We bought our groceries and some toiletries at that mini market at an affordable price.

For example, a packet of ham slices and mini sausages costs only €1 each. 4 fresh eggs cost about €2, so does a bottle of chocolate milk. A cup of chilled, ready-to-drink Starbucks Discoveries Coffee costs about €3.50 - €3.90 each (if I remember correctly) whereas a packet of potato chips costs about €1.50 per packet. Besides that, there is a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, cheeses, bread, salads, sandwiches, and dry ingredients such as packets of instant noodles, grains of rice, and various canned food too.

The shopkeeper is friendly, helpful and always smiling. The mini market is open daily from 8am – 11pm (depending on the crowd). There is an ATM beside the shop too. There is another mini market located in front of Maryloujohn Villas, however it was closed when we were there probably due to the low season. During the peak season in summer, the entire stretch of the main pedestrian road in Oia comes alive and is bustling with people and activities.

Prior to my arrival in Santorini, Greece, I searched online and booked a lovely place to stay on the island through Airbnb. In fact, I used Airbnb to book my accommodations throughout Europe for my European holiday. I heard about Airbnb somewhere last year and have since wanted to try it out, so when I had the chance, I went for it. Good news, my first experience with Airbnb was excellent.

Using Airbnb & The Importance Of Doing Your Research Before Making a Booking!

Using Airbnb to book my accommodation is as easy as ABC! I did not encounter any problems when I use the website or the mobile app. Like all booking websites, one needs to register for an account before using Airbnb. Besides that, Airbnb requires its hosts and users to authenticate their identity by providing either, but not limited to:

A copy of our passport / social security number/driver’s license
A valid email address
A valid phone number
A valid Facebook account
Reviews (left by the hosts or users after the stay)

Besides making booking easier, those measures are to prevent misconducts and frauds by fraudulent hosts and users. This safety feature gave me the confidence to try out Airbnb. Even so, I took the effort to go through and read all the reviews (not just only the ratings) left by the users or travellers on various booking websites, travel blogs, etc just to make sure that I got a good host and accommodation, or in other words made the right choice.

I have read stories where people booked their accommodations based on the ratings featured on the booking websites without reading the reviews or doing further research about the place, had an awful experience and came back ranting that they were cheated!

Although I felt sorry for them, I do think it is irresponsible and rather foolish for one to rely solely on the ratings or reviews featured on a website without doing further research on the internet; gathering information from various sources like Tripadvisor, Lonely Planet, travel blogs, etc and compare their findings before making a decision – to book the accommodation or anything for that matter.

Remember, you have to do your part to be a smart traveller to ensure that you will have a good experience! I cannot stress that more! Heck, I can write a very lengthy blog post dedicated to the topic, but I shall keep it for another day. Now, let us get back to the story. Like using any accommodation booking websites, I searched for a nice place to stay in Santorini via Airbnb by:

Keying in my travel dates
Selecting the room type that I wish to stay in (whether it is an entire home/apartment, a private room or a shared room)
Determining the price range per night (according to my budget)
Opting for more filters to narrow down my preferences (such as required amenities, number of beds, host language, etc)

From there, a list of available accommodations was provided. I filtered those accommodations and picked the one I like or preferred. After the payment was complete, a booking receipt and confirmation email was sent to my email, along with helpful information on how to get to the place, etc (provided by the host). From there, I excitedly counted down the days to my departure.

From the list of the available accommodations in Santorini provided by Airbnb, I decided to go for the Captain’s budget studio for 2 at Maryloujohn Villas in Oia. The first reason why I chose it is for its strategic location. The villa is conveniently located in Oia's main pedestrian street. This feature is especially good for those who do not wish to lug and carry their heavy luggage up and down the physically challenging, steep steeps to get to their hotels or guesthouses which are mostly located on the steep cliffs in Oia.

Besides that, the property is only 10 meters away from the local bus stop (Saint George stop) and a mini market nearby, 5 meters away from the only hairdresser + nail parlour and ticket office in Oia and a 5-minute walk to the town centre, close to the beautiful church of Saint Giorgios.

The other reason is for its soothing Cycladic white-blue décor of the room besides the building’s rich history. It is a 200-year old traditional captain's house belonging to the Karras family that was restored by Dimitrios Rodakis in the early 1990’s. The property offers a breathtaking view of the caldera with the morning fog rolling in from the Aegean Sea during sunrise and a spectacular sunset.

All that convenience and remarkable view for only €49 (RM229) per night (the price I got for visiting during the low season)! Do note that the price is subjected to change according to the travel seasons and based on the owner’s discretion. Breakfast is not included, but can be requested for €6 per person, per day. Laundry costs €10 per person (less than 10kg load).

A Comfortable & Good Night’s Sleep At The Captain’s Budget Studio For 2

My inquiry for the room was attended by John, the owner of Maryloujohn Villas in Oia, Santorini. He provided the directions on how to get to the property by local bus or taxi, along with the expected fares. Using the directions given, my sister and I were able to get to the property with ease.

Upon our arrival, John and his adorable dog named Bella welcomed us to the villa with a warm smile and friendly gesture. The check-in process was fast and easy. I provided my passport and a copy of the booking receipt for verification purposes. After that, John personally showed us to our room and gave us a short tour around his villa.

The Captain’s budget studio for 2 did not disappoint my sister and I. The room looked exactly as pictured in the photos on Airbnb – clean and neat. The room was not too big or too small – it was just nice for two people. There is a television, air-conditioning, a dressing table, a built-in cupboard, a small refrigerator as well as a small induction stove at the corner for light cooking. Above the stove is a rack of several kitchen utensils.

The room has a small window overlooking a courtyard and the paved road where a herd of donkeys usually pass by during the morning or evening. The bathroom was kind of small but adequate. We stayed in the room for 2 nights and loved it to the max! We do not have any problems with the room or the property at all.

3D/2N Backpacking Santorini Without A Tour (Part 3) : Scenic Local Bus Ride From Fira Central Bus Station To Oia

As mentioned in an earlier blog post of mine, there is a well-organised public bus service in Santorini, connecting the airport to Fira (where the central bus station is located) and various destinations on the island. Do take note that the busses to all destinations depart from Fira. For example, to get to Oia from Santorini National Airport, one would have to take the bus first to Fira, then take another bus to Oia, vice versa.

From Central Fira Hotel, we made our way up the cobbled street and walked towards the central bus station located not too far away. We passed by several shops, cafes, hotels, and tour operators along the way. Several buses and people were already waiting at the bus station when we arrived.

We boarded the correct 12.30pm bus to Oia and waited patiently for the bus to depart. Fyi, the bus tickets are purchased on the bus (issued by the bus conductor), and not from the information counter or anywhere else. The bus tickets cannot be booked or purchased online.

The bus fares are priced at €1.80, €2.00 or €2.30 per person, per way, depending on the destination. The local buses run between every 30 minutes to every other hour. The timetables are available on the notice board at the central bus station in Fira or online at http://www.ktel-santorini.gr. We paid €1.80 each for our Fira to Oia local bus tickets. Not long after that, the bus made its move to Oia.

A Scenic Local Bus Ride From Fira To Oia – Featuring The Steep Cliffs Of The Caldera & The Sea-Facing Flat Farmlands

The streets in Fira are narrow and at some places steep, yet you will be amazed how the buses are able to navigate effortlessly through it. Most vehicles on the road gave way to the mighty buses to pass without much problem. If you happen to drive on the road in a car or an ATV, do have the courtesy and common sense to give way for the buses to pass, else you will be honked mercilessly until you give way.

Santorini is divided into two types of terrains; the magnificent steep cliffs facing the caldera and the astonishing sea-facing rolling hillsides with flat farmland on the other side of the island. The local bus ride from Fira to Oia gave us the opportunity to witness the beauty of both sides of the island.

The beautiful scenery that we always see on postcards depicting Santorini is the caldera facing side (mostly taken in Oia). The other flat side of island is pretty much unknown to the world, well… to me that is so, imagine the surprise and excitement I had when I first laid my eyes on it! It was such a beautiful and breathtaking view! It reminded me of the time I cruised along the Great Ocean Road in Victoria. I love that road trip so much! That reminds me, I shall share about that experience soon.

Dreamy Cycladic Architecture & The Safety Concerns Of The Island

The majority of the buildings in Santorini have white-washed walls and some, bright blue domes. The dreamy blue and white colour combination reminds people of the clear blue skies and white clouds, the cobalt sea of the Aegean and the white gentle waves – the unforgettable beauty of Santorini.

In certain areas along the journey, we caught a glimpse of the Cycladic caves houses built within the cliffs of the island. At some points of the road, it brought us precariously close to the edge of the cliffs. For that reason, driving around the island is no child’s play; that is why a valid driver’s license is required to rent a car or an ATV in Santorini.

One thing I noticed is that there are not street lights on the road in between the major towns. That means it is quite risky to drive on the road after sundown. That explains why the last bus to/from every destination on the island ends at 7pm-7.30pm, so be sure to plan your journey well. Fret not for taxis are available throughout the day and night through phone bookings.

Driving around the island of Santorini is no child's play because certain areas of the road are precariously close to the edge of the cliffs!

Our Local Bus Ride Experience

To sum it up, our local bus ride from Fira to Oia was pleasant, comfortable and most importantly, affordable. The journey took about 40 minutes. We requested for the bus to stop us at the “Saint George” stop which was very near to the place we were going to stay in Oia, Santorini. From there, we made our way towards MarylouJohn Villas, a lovely accommodation booked via Airbnb.

My sister and I came upon this hotel by chance as we were looking for a place to spend the night in Fira town. We met a friendly, local couple on the street who kindly pointed out the hotel to us. As it was late, dark and we were tired, we did not want to waste time looking for other hotels or hostels in the area, thus we settled for a night's stay at Central Fira Hotel, Santorini.

A Luxury Boutique Hotel In The Heart Of Fira – Central Hotel Fira

Honestly, we did not think much when we entered the hotel to enquire for an available room for the night. I did not Google or do any research about the hotel beforehand either. All I know was the hotel looked decent and the price was affordable (I requested for the cheapest room available).

As I was dying to get a room, have a hot shower, go to bed early, and be well rested for the next day, the moment Ulysses (the friendly and helpful night shift staff at the hotel’s reception) told us that there was an available room for us, I instantly took the offer without any hesitations.

The check-in process was fast and easy. We were required to produce our passports for identification and record purposes. When making a payment, cash is preferred but credit cards are accepted as well. As stated at the reception counter, depending on the season, a night in the double deluxe room costs:

Low season (1/12 – 31/12) – €100
Middle season (16/9 – 30/11) – €155
High season (1/6 – 15/9) – €200

Because it was a last minute, walk-in booking, I managed to get a discounted price for the room at €70 with breakfast for two. Online booking with the hotel's website, Booking.com, Agoda.com, etc will get you about the same price, again depending on the season the booking is made. After the payment was made, Ulysses handed our room key and showed us to our double deluxe room (No.5).

He then gave a brief explanation on how to operate the air conditioner/heater and shower in the room and how to get out/in the hotel after 10.00pm. Fyi, the hotel’s reception is open from 8am – 10.00pm only with the exception of late check-ins. A contact number (+30 6930047965) is provided in case we needed anything after reception hours. After that, he bid us good night and went home to rest.

A Comfortable & Good Night’s Sleep In The Double Deluxe Room

What I love about our room is its minimalist décor – simple, modern and sleek. The room was beautiful, spacious and clean. Our large king-size, anatomical double bed was snug and cosy! We simply love it to bits! There is a small window above the bed for ventilation, but no view of the caldera or the sea. We were fine with that because we only wanted a comfortable place to sleep.

Besides the bed, there is a large wardrobe for us to hang our clothes and a safety deposit box for us to keep our belongings safe. Clean towels, bathrobes and slippers were also provided. There is a dressing table, a clothes rack, satellite TV, mini bar, a phone, and a hairdryer too. The air-conditioner in the room also functions as a heater to warm up the room during cold months and chilly nights.

The bathroom is amazingly spacious and clean with the best shower, without a shower curtain! Talk about being sexy! ;-) Yves Rocher luxury toiletries were provided to our surprise. Fresh fruits and two bottles of chilled mineral water are complimentary. There is excellent WiFi throughout the building and in the room. It was not long before my sister and I got cosy on the bed and dozed off with happy thoughts of the adventures that await us the next day.

A Generous & Scrumptious Greek Breakfast Buffet

We woke up early in the morning to have our breakfast which was served from 7am – 9am. We were expecting a simple breakfast of coffee/tea, toast with butter and jam, some cereals and fresh fruits, but we were blown away by the sight of the generous breakfast spread!

For our drinks, we had a choice of fresh milk, fresh orange juice, coffee and a variety of teas! For food, we had a choice of scrambled eggs, sausages, boiled egg, freshly baked bread, slices of ham, cheese, sweet cherry tomatoes, Greek yoghurt, croissants, honey, dried nuts and fruits, cakes, cereals, and fresh fruits.

Both my sister and I had a very satisfying breakfast that morning. The honey – the nectar of the Gods was the best I have ever tasted; that is how real honey supposed to taste! Not forgetting the Greek yoghurt. Mmm…it was delicious! I have to say, Greek breakfast is the best! After having a good meal, we went up to the roof to soak up some sunlight, but a young couple was already there. We decided to give them some privacy and went back to our room instead.

My sister and I were very happy with our stay at Central Fira Hotel and will not hesitate to stay there again next time. Check-out was before 12pm. During our check-out, we met Kristina (the friendly and helpful morning shift staff at the hotel’s reception) who gave us some sightseeing and travelling tips around the island. We bid good bye and excitedly made our way to the local bus’ central bus station in Fira that was a stone’s throw away from the hotel.

Avid readers and followers of this travel blog of mine will know that I usually have a travel itinerary for almost every destination that I go, and would probably be anticipating a travel itinerary for my recent trip to Santorini (Thira) as well.

This time however, I decided to wing it and just go with the flow. Once in a while, it feels good to let go and just embrace what the world or Santorini (Thira) has to offer to us. Therefore, there will be no travel itinerary for my #ErikaTohTravelsSantorini series. Instead, I will share my travel stories and experiences in Santorini. :-)

Public Transportation To/From Syntagma Square – Athens International Airport

Before my sister and I went to Santorini, we spent 2 days and 1 night exploring the historical city of Athens, Greece. Athens is by far, my favourite European city or travel destination apart from Santorini. There are several reasons leading to the above conclusion and I shall elaborate further in my #ErikaTohTravelsAthens series.

Back to the story, there is excellent public transportation service in Athens ranging from the buses, metros and taxis. As a result of that, getting from one place to another in Athens is easy and convenient. However, during a strike, the metros, buses and even the taxi service will be crippled and visitors will be left stranded in the city unless they are able to find other alternatives. My sister and I were lucky enough to experience a strike on the day we arrived in Athens. I will share our unforgettable Greek strike experience in my #ErikaTohTravelsAthens series, at another time.

Public Bus

From the city of Athens, we made our way to Athens International Airport by bus because not only is the fare cheap, we get to enjoy scenic views of Athens city too. Besides the bus, one can also take the metro or taxi to the airport, but those will cost more. At Syntagma Square, look out for kamaronia FoodBar (in bright yellow):

Metro

Take Metro Line 3 (Aghia Marina – Douk. Plakentias - Athens International Airport) which connects Athens International Airport with the city centre. The trains run every 30 minutes, 7 days a week from 6:30 am to 11:30 pm. The trip to/from the airport to Syntagma station (Athens centre) takes about 40 minutes. The metro ticket fares are as follows:

One-way ticket for one person: €8
Return ticket for one person: €14 (valid within 48 hours)
One-way ticket for 2 persons: €14
One-way ticket for 3 persons: €20
One-way half price tickets (for students younger than 25, youngsters 6-18 or people older than 65): €4.00
Children under 6 years : Free

When using a return, a day or a week ticket, be sure to validate the ticket at the special ticket validation machine upon your exit and entry at the train stations. Keep your tickets safe for random inspections by the train officers on duty.

Taxi

Taxis are available at the designated taxi waiting areas around Athens city. A taxi to/from the airport to Syntagma Square costs a flat rate of:

€35 from 5:00 am to midnight
€50 from midnight to 5:00 am

Do take note that the charge/fare is determined by the time of arrival at the destination and includes all applicable surcharges and extras.

Ryanair Night Flight From Athens (ATH) To Santorini (JTR)

Of all the airlines I surveyed, Ryanair offers the cheapest flights from Athens to Santorini, especially if the tickets are bought several months in advance. For the record, our flight tickets to Santorini costs €138 (including VAT 23%) for two, with no checked baggage.

Do take note that Ryanair is extremely strict with their carry on and cabin bags allowance. Any bags that exceed the dimensions given will be charged a hefty €50 fee, whereas online checked baggage only cost €15 for a bag below 30kg! Be sure to measure your luggage bag and online checked baggage if it exceeds the required dimensions to save your euros! I warned you!

Checking-in was a breezy affair, so was the time when it comes to board the plane from our designated terminal. Do take note that there are no announcements for Ryanair departures at Athens International Airport, so pay attention to the live departure board and make your way to the correct boarding terminal to avoid missing your flight.

Hello, Santorini National Airport!

After spending about 40 minutes on the plane, we arrived safely at Santorini National Airport. The airport was rather quiet, small, but operational. From the airport, we made our way out to the main street and spotted a local bus waiting at the bus stop located on the left, several metres away.

We boarded the bus to the central bus station in Fira. The journey took about 20 minutes. Fyi, the last bus from Santorini National Airport to Fira is 7.10pm. In fact, the last bus for most of the destinations in Santorini was about the same time, around 7pm. For the accurate time, kindly check the timetables at this website: http://www.ktel-santorini.gr

It was dark by the time we arrived in Fira and there was no bus to Oia after 6.30pm, so we had to spend the night at Fira. We took the opportunity to explore the town and had our dinner at a Chinese restaurant located just down the road. A plate of egg fried rice, curry fried rice and two bottles of mineral water was €18.

Initially, we wanted to spend the night at the bus station, but the presence of rowdy youths racing and on the streets with their noisy ATVs turned us off. We feared for our safety as well as those youths looked rather mischievous. They are like the pesky “Mat Rempits” we have back in Malaysia. Thus, we decided to stay at the nearest decent hotel that we could find that happens to be Central Fira Hotel.

Santorini (Thira), a beautiful volcanic island haven located just 200 kilometres off the coast of Athens, Greece sits high on the bucket list of most people. The dreamy combination of bright blues skies, breathtaking views of the sea-drowned caldera and the crystal clear Aegean Sea, stunning sunsets, captivating strange beaches, picturesque white-washed Cycladic buildings with striking blue domes, mouth-watering Greek food and super friendly inhabitants make this island the perfect destination for a getaway, wedding or honeymoon.

The Best Time To Visit Santorini (Thira)

Santorini enjoys a moderate Mediterranean climate all year long, with relatively warm and dry summers (April-October) and mild and rainy winters (November-March). The peak season where tourists mostly from the European countries flock to the island is from May-September. The low season (October-November) sees tourists mostly from Asia and Indo-China visiting the island.

Do take note that most of the hotels, restaurants and tour operators on the island will be closed during the off-season which starts from December-March. Ideal times to visit Santorini for milder weather, lower prices and lesser crowds are from April-June and September-October.

Getting To The Island

The island is accessible by sea or air. There are regular flights from Athens (ATH) to Santorini (JTR) by Olympic Air, Aegean Airlines, Ryanair Airlines and Volotea. The flight from Athens to Santorini takes about 40 minutes.

The journey by sea via a ferry begins from the port of Piraeus, Athens to the port of Athinios, Santorini. The trip takes about 5 hours on a high speed ferry, longer hours (about 9-10 hours) on a regular ferry. High-speed catamarans are also available for those who wish to travel in style although the price would not be cheap.

Among the available ferry companies are Blue Star Ferries, SeaJet Catamaran, Hellenic Seaways, and GA Ferries. During the high season, there is a daily connection between Heraklion (Crete) and Santorini. A word of advice, those who suffer from seasickness should avoid taking the ferry and opt for a flight instead as the journey on sea could get rather bumpy.

Some cruise ships are known to make a stop in the caldera near the Old Port (Skala Pier) of Fira. From there, visitors have 3 options to reach the top of the cliff and Fira town that lies 260 metres above sea level. Those options are:

By cable car (Daily, 6.30am-10pm, departs every 20 mins, €5 per person; takes about 5-10 minutes to reach the top),
By donkey/mule ride (€8 per person; there's a weight limit and it'll take longer than the cable car)
By a tough hike up 580 steps (Free of charge; following the same path as the donkeys/mules)

Getting Around The Island

There is a well-organised public bus service on the island, connecting the airport to Fira (where the central bus station is located) and various destinations on the island. Do take note that all destinations depart from Fira. For example, to get to Oia from Santorini National Airport, one would have to take the bus to Fira first, then take another bus to Oia, vice versa.

The fixed bus fares are priced at €1.80, €2.00 or €2.30 per person, per way, depending on the destination. Buses run between every 30 minutes to every other hour. The timetables are available online at http://www.ktel-santorini.gr. Fyi, the bus tickets are purchased on the bus (issued by the bus conductor), and not from the information counter. The bus tickets cannot be booked or purchased online.

Private shuttle transfers are also available from the airport or port to various destinations on the island. In addition, there are "hop on, hop off" private bus services operated by tour companies. Boats or water taxis also run between major coastal towns on the island, and in between neighbouring islands as well.

Cars can be rented from as low as €25 up to €55 a day, depending on the vehicle model (auto/manual) and visiting seasons, while scooters/motorbikes and ATVs rentals are available from €15 up to €150,000 a day, again depending on the vehicle model/cc and visiting seasons. An international driver's license is required.

Fyi, it takes about 50 minutes to drive from one end (Vlichada) to the other end (Oia) of the island. Besides buses, taxis are also available on the island. Do take note that the taxi drivers on the Cyclades Islands (Santorini, Mykonos, etc) are known to pick up other passengers along the way with the fares being shared between the passengers.

Tourist Scams That You Should Know

Wherever we are, there will always be greedy, irresponsible and unscrupulous individuals trying to cheat unsuspecting victims off their hard-earned cash, especially in popular tourist destinations. It is sad to know that the beautiful island of Santorini has its own tourist scams too. One of it is the scooters/motorbikes and ATVs rental scam.

Their modus operandi is to offer faulty motorbikes or ATVs at a lower price, but in the case of an accident or vehicle damage, they will demand that the customer pay for the whole cost of the damage. Besides that, there is the scam where basic insurance coverage is presented to customers disguised as full insurance coverage, thus denying customers of a full insurance claim when accidents happen due to the faulty condition of the vehicle. Be sure to read the details and ask questions before agreeing or signing an agreement with any vehicle rental companies to protect yourself and your loved ones.

The other scam is the unpriced items in shops or food/drinks in cafes, taverns or restaurants. Certain shops and restaurants in Santorini are known to not display the price of their items (either no price tag or price is not listed in the menu). Unsuspecting victims will find themselves being charged exorbitantly when the bill comes. To avoid being a victim, only shop at shops or dine at cafes, taverns or restaurants that clearly display the price of their items.

Apart from the above, Santorini as well as the other islands in the Cyclades are generally a safe, relaxing and romantic travel destination. With unforgettable breathtaking views, good food, friendly people, and a laid-back romantic ambience, many will find themselves in blissful paradise.

4D/3N Backpacking Mui Ne Without A Tour (Part 9) : Walking Tour & The Art of Crossing The Street Like A Boss in Saigon (HCMC)

How To Face The Traffic & Cross The Streets in Saigon (HCMC) Like A Boss

In one of my earlier blog posts, I promised to share the tips and tricks of surviving Saigon’s (HCMC) chaotic and intimidating traffic. My sister and I managed to get by Vietnam’s city traffic effortlessly by practising several tips and tricks even though it was our first time there. Vietnam’s chaotic traffic is something you got to get used to through experience. The sound of endless honking and the sight of incoming traffic from all directions that does not seem to stop can be quite intimidating for beginners.

So, here are the basic steps and the tips and tricks we used to face the traffic and cross the streets in Saigon (HCMC) like a boss:

Step 1:

Observe the traffic conditions in all directions before attempting to cross the street

Step 2:

Attempt to cross the street when the road is clear (if you’re lucky!) or when there is less traffic on the road
If it is a wide road, walk slowly and steadily across the road, towards the middle of the road and stop if needed. Then, repeat Steps 1 and 2

What we did:

We watched the incoming traffic, but avoid making eye contact with the motorists as we crossed the road as cool as a cucumber (and like a boss!). That was the trick! Rest assured, the motorists will try to avoid running over you when they see you on the road.
That said, do not attempt to cross the road blindly and recklessly! As much as the motorists would prefer to avoid running over you, they will not be able to avoid you or stop in their tracks in time if you suddenly appear out of nowhere! Give them enough time to react accordingly to your presence on the road and everything will be fine. Get what I mean?
Also, beware of snatch thieves while you are walking or crossing the road in Saigon (HCMC)! With that, I wish you good luck and happy crossing the roads in Saigon (HCMC)! It is an experience you will never forget :-)

The Independence Palace

The Independence Palace is also known as the Reunification Palace. It is a landmark in Saigon (HCMC). It is the home and workplace of the President of South Vietnam during the Vietnam War. It took us about 20 minutes to walk from our hostel to the Independence Palace. Visitors are not allowed into the area. Photography is allowed. The guards on duty were friendly and helpful.

It is also known as Basilica of Our Lady of The Immaculate Conception. It is an approximately 6 minutes walk from the Independence Palace. Ho Chi Minh City Hall

Ho Chi Minh City Hall is a beautiful French colonial style building that was built in 1902-1908. The building is not open to the public, but visitors can take photographs outside of the building. The walk from Saigon Central Post Office to Ho Chi Minh City Hall took about 5 minutes. We arrived there in the evening, thus managed to enjoy both the day and night view.

Ho Chi Minh Square

Ho Chi Minh Square is also known as Saigon Square by the locals. It is located just opposite Ho Chi Minh City Hall. You will see a bronze statue of Ho Chi Minh standing and greeting his followers. The public is not allowed to enter the square or be anywhere near the statue. The square is guarded by 24-hour police/army surveillance when we visited it.

Ben Thanh Market (At Night)

Like most night markets in Asia, make-shift stalls were set up along the streets and a wide variety of items such as clothes, souvenirs and street foods were sold. From travellers’ reviews, the night market was better than the day market in terms of service and price. The vendors here were friendly and less aggressive as compared to those in the day market. From our experience, this was proven true. A word of caution, beware of pick pockets and scams when at the night market.

We visited Ben Thanh Market again during the day to buy a pair of ao dai for ourselves. The ao dai is Vietnam’s national costume worn by women. It is a tight-fitting silk tunic worn over a pair of pants. The shops in the market are divided into several sections – clothes, shoes, bags, souvenirs, electronics, etc.

The moment my sister and I stepped foot into the clothes section, the sellers whom are mostly women began to harass us to buy from their shop. They began to block our way, if not grabbing our hands and forcefully pulled us towards their shop! That was how aggressive, daring and desperate those women were! Despite the harassment, we kept our cool and surveyed for the best price.

Like any other market, bargaining is a must when buying something at Ben Thanh Market. Start your bargain about 50-60 percent off the offered price and work your way from there. If they refuse to sell you the item, walk away politely and bargain at other shops instead.

The average price for an ao dai is 350,000 VND, however a seller from another shop quoted us 600,000 VND for the exact same piece! We left that particular shop in an instance. After a long session of bargaining and sweet talking, we managed to buy 2 ao dais for 450,000 VND.

Pham Ngu Lao Street

Pham Ngu Lao Street in Saigon (HCMC) boasts a lively nightlife with throngs of street vendors, cafes, bars, and clubs in close proximity. Interesting nightlife entertainment spots include The View Rooftop Bar, Seventeen Saloon, Go 2, and Crazy Buffalo as well as many smaller pubs that offer cheap drinks and happy hour promos.

It is a common place for socialising or to meet friendly expats who are more than happy to share a few tips about travelling in and beyond Vietnam. Other interesting streets in Saigon (HCMC) are Le Loi, De Tham, Bui Vien, and Do Quang Dao streets. The journey to Pham Ngu Lao street from Ben Thanh Market took about 8 minutes.

The next morning, my sister and I took the public bus No. 152 from the bus stop at Ben Thanh Market to Tan Son Nhat International Airport. The fare was 5,000 VND per person. The journey to the airport took about 40-50 minutes, depending on the traffic conditions. In Saigon (HCMC), most of its landmarks and point of interests are located within walking distance in the city. All we need is a good map or a GPS system like Google Maps to get our way around those sites. Staying somewhere in the centre of those attractions is a convenience and budget friendly as it minimises the time needed for travelling from one site to another, besides saving on transportation expenses. Therefore, after doing much research, my sister and I decided to stay at Eco Backpacker’s Hostel that is located in District 1, central Saigon (HCMC).

Eco Backpacker’s Hostel – Good Location, Budget-Friendly & Comfortable

The main reason why we chose to stay at Eco Backpacker’s Hostel is for its location – strategically located in the city centre of Saigon (HCMC). It is a walking distance to Ben Thanh Market, Pham Ngu Lao Street, the Independence Palace, Central Post Office, Notre-Dame Basilica, and Ho Chi Minh City Hall and Ho Chi Minh Square to name a few. Not only that, it is just several metres away from FUTA (Phuong Trang) bus counter/terminal in District 1, Saigon (HCMC).

The other reason is for its budget-friendly dormitory and private rooms – a single bed in the female or mixed dormitory starts as low as RM30 a night, whereas a double room ensuite with bunk beds (for 2 people) starts from RM84 per night. Budget single room are priced from RM63 per night. The hostel is located nearby cafes, restaurants, convenience stores, Starbucks, tour and express bus operators (FUTA Phuong Trang and The Sinh Tourist).

The fact that the hostel claims to have a great rooftop view of the city skyline captured our interest as well for my sister and I could picture ourselves chilling on the rooftop, drinking a glass of cocktail or a pint of beer while enjoying Saigon’s city skyline regardless of the time of the day. Besides that, good reviews of the hostel left by travellers on various travel websites made us feel confident enough to book our stay in the double room ensuite with bunk beds.

Of Dorms, Bed Bugs & Our Double Room Ensuite With Bunk Beds

As mentioned earlier, Eco Backpacker’s Hostel is located on the same street, just several metres away from the FUTA (Phuong Trang) Express Buslines Terminal in District 1. If you have read my previous blog post, our FUTA (Phuong Trang) express bus travelling from Mui Ne to Saigon (HCMC) stopped us at the respective terminal. From there, we walked towards the hostel in less than a minute and checked-in to our room with ease. Initially, my sister and I wanted to stay in the female dormitory, but after reading the reviews left by travellers mentioning about the presence of bed bugs in the dormitory, we decided to skip the dormitory altogether and booked a private room instead. Do not say I did not warn you beforehand of the bed bugs problem in the dormitory! You have been warned accordingly.

Although I did not have an encounter with the bed bugs, my sister on the other hand was unfortunate enough to develop a red, swollen and itchy patch of skin on her left leg (that we suspect must have been the work of the pesky bed bugs) after spending a night in the room. That said, besides the dormitories, there is a high possibility that bed bugs lurk in the private rooms too.

Our double room ensuite with bunk beds was just as described in the descriptions given on the website (Booking.Com). The room is fairly spacious with a large bunk bed, has a window for ventilation and a spacious bathroom with hot/cold shower. Both upper and lower bed has its own reading light (mine was kind of broken) and a safety storage compartment. There is air-conditioning and a television fixed on the wall too. Apart from the kind of broken reading light and possible bed bugs issue, we were quite happy with the room.

Access Card Security Feature & Occasional Power Trips!

Getting in, out and around Eco Backpacker’s Hostel requires an access card that will allow its owner to operate the lift, open the doors and gain access to our respective rooms/dormitories. That good safety measure helps my sister and I to feel safe and secure at the hostel.

Apart from that, there is one experience that I would like to share. During our stay at the hostel, we experienced a sudden blackout that lasted for about 10-15 minutes. A check with the staff on duty at the reception counter revealed that the cause of the blackout was a minor power trip.

I was told by him to go to the electrical power box located on Level 1 (if I remember correctly) and turn on the switch that tripped. I did as told, thus the electrical power was restored. From there, I found out that power trips are a common thing at the hostel. Be sure to take note of it when staying at Eco Backpacker’s Hostel. It is not a huge problem, but it will surprise unwary guests.

In A Nutshell

One thing my sister and I like about Eco Backpacker’s Hostel is its friendly and helpful reception. Helpful maps, directions and advices were given to us when we asked for help. Wifi was free, but breakfast comes with a price of $2 per person (7am – 10am). Free flow of beer (7pm – 8pm) comes at a price of $1 per person. Luggage storage and a shower after check-out are available for a fee.

We even managed to have a candlelight budget dinner of pasta and cheesecake on the rooftop of the hostel; candlelight thanks to the total darkness we experienced while we were there. It was either the motion detector lighting was not working or the fact that we could not find the switch anywhere, thus we assumed it was motion sensor lighting (that malfunctioned). It could not be that the rooftop was closed because we asked the staff at the reception before going up to the rooftop and she said it was open. Anyway, we enjoyed our dinner and Saigon’s amazing city skyline view nonetheless.

P/S: The elevator in the building will not take us all the way up to the rooftop. We will have to walk a storey up on foot and climb up a set of stairs to reach the rooftop area of the hostel. The metal stairs leading to the rooftop is steep and narrow. Those who are afraid of heights might find it a challenging feat. Kindly exercise caution when making your way up or down the rooftop.

On our way back to the guesthouse after spending the day visiting the Fairy Springs, fishing village, Lotus Lake, white and red sand dunes, I remembered that my sister and I needed to buy the bus tickets back to Saigon (Ho Chi Minh) from Mui Ne for tomorrow. Therefore, I requested our driver to drop by the FUTA (Phuong Trang) Express Bus ticket counter located somewhere near the guesthouse, so that we may buy the bus tickets there and then. FUTA (Phuong Trang) Express Bus Ticket Counter in Mui Ne

The FUTA (Phuong Trang) ticket counter is visible from the street, even at night thanks to its bright lights and huge signage. Buying the bus tickets is simple; just walk straight to the counter where a salesperson will attend to your needs like we did.

To purchase the bus tickets back to Saigon (Ho Chi Minh) or anywhere else for that matter, one will have to:

Mention the room number and the name of the hotel/guesthouse/hostel that one is staying in Mui Ne because the bus will pick you up from there
Provide a contact number where they can call and inform you when the bus is about to leave. Since I have a local Vietnamese number, I gave the number to them. Read which telecommunications provider I used and my review here

The BX. Mui Ne – BX. Mien Tay (TP.HCM) bus ticket costs 135,000 VND per person, leaving at 9.00am. Again, we requested for seats A19 and A20 which are located at the very end of the bus, on the lower deck. We had the same seat numbers when travelling from Saigon (Ho Chi Minh) to Mui Ne. After that, we made our way back to the guesthouse for a satisfying dinner of Vietnamese curry and rice. The non-creamy curry had generous portions of diced chicken meat and vegetables (carrot, potato, long bean and lemongrass). It was delicious! The Malaysian version would have coconut milk added to it to make it creamy. With our stomachs full, we were too lazy and tired to venture out again, thus we retired for the night in our comfortable room.

We woke up early in the morning to pack our belongings and proceeded to the café for check-out where we got our passports back. If you are unaware of Vietnam’s foreign visitors check-in/check-out passport safekeeping law, read more info here.

At the café, we had a simple but delicious breakfast of Vietnamese mushroom omelette with bread. After that, we sat back, relaxed and waited for the bus to arrive. That was when my sister and I took the opportunity to observe our surroundings and soak up the positive vibes around us. At around 8.50am, I received a phone call instructing us to wait outside, by the roadside of the guesthouse. 15 minutes later, the bus arrived and we boarded the bus back to Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City).

The bus made several short stops along the way to pick up some passengers who were on the same journey to Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City). As before, we were given a complimentary bottle of drinking water, a thin blanket and a wet tissue each. This time however, my sister and I had an adorable travel companion who loves to smile each time we played peek-a-boo with him on the bus.

Good Bye Mui Ne, Hello Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City)!

As this was our second time travelling on the sleeper bus, there was nothing new for us to look out for except for the scenery that was laid before our eyes. Throughout the journey, we passed by rustic villages, old shophouses and dragon fruit plantations. Overall, it was a pleasant ride back to the bustling city.

The bus made a stop somewhere halfway the journey at a rest area for passengers to have a toilet break, grab a quick bite or have a quick lunch. There is a restaurant and several stalls selling drinks, snacks and takeaway food such as baguettes, buns, bread or even hot dishes such as fried rice, noodles or soups at reasonable prices.

The journey back to Saigon from Mui Ne took about 4 hours, and we arrived in the city at around 1.30pm. The bus dropped us off in front of the FUTA (Phuong Trang) bus terminal in District 1. From there, we made our way towards Eco Backpacker’s Hostel which is a stone's throw away from the terminal.

4D/3N Backpacking Mui Ne Without A Tour (Part 6) : US Jeep Private Sunset Tour (Fairy Springs, Fishing Village, Lotus Lake, White Sand Dunes & Sunset at Red Sand Dunes)

After enjoying a delicious vegan lunch, my sister and I chilled at the café while waiting for the time to pass. The day before, we decided to skip the crowd and hired a US jeep and a driver with Lin to take us to the places of attractions in Mui Ne – namely the Fairy Springs, fishing village, Lotus Lake, white sand dunes and finally, watch the sunset at the red sand dunes. The rent was 600,000 VND (can be divided with four - five people max). At 2pm, we were picked up in front of the guesthouse by Lin’s brother who was our driver for the day. To cut the story short, I will just summarise our journey into several sections/destinations.

Fairy Springs

This was our first stop. Fyi, the Fairy Springs is actually a shallow stream that flows and cuts across the bauxite-laden terrain, leaving behind exposed earth and interesting rock formations in vivid colours of red, orange, yellow and white. It is supposed to be free, but the locals will try many ways to charge and part you of your precious VND by imposing either a parking fee, an entrance fee or even tour guide service fee depending on the situation.

In our case, our driver parked the jeep by the roadside and instructed us to walk along a narrow path that will bring us to the entrance of the stream. We followed his instructions and arrived at the entrance of the stream, but several young men were waiting when we arrived. In an instance, they approached and demanded 10,000 VND (5,000 VND per person) from us for admission. Seeing how persistent those men were and fearing for our safety as there were only the two of us that time, my sister and I decided to give it a miss.

Fishing Village

We continued our journey on the road, this time driving by the coastal area of Mui Ne, Vietnam. The wind was blowing very hard. The weather was not looking good and it was not long before we had light shower of rain over us. Thankfully, the rain stopped raining and gave us just enough time to explore a small section of the fishing village of Mui Ne, Vietnam.

Since the weather was unfavourable and the sea was rough, not many fishing boats were seen at sea. On a bright, sunny day where the sea is much calmer, this coastal area will be filled with boats and fishermen going about their business. The women on the other hand, will be sorting out the catch of the day while chatting to each other on the beach.

After taking several photographs, it started to rain again and we ran towards our jeep for shelter. Thus, we bid farewell to the fishing village and continued our journey to the famous white sand dunes of Mui Ne, Vietnam.

Our driver made a stop halfway through the journey for us to enjoy the scenic view of the Lotus Lake along with the white sand dunes in the background. The fact that we were close to the sand dunes made excited and happy. Besides that, we also encountered a herd of cows crossing the road to our amusement. Moo…moo!!

Journey to the White Sand Dunes

Here is something that you should know when visiting the white sand dunes of Mui Ne, Vietnam. The journey to the white sand dunes can get rather dusty and painful to a certain extent, especially during a windy day when there are strong winds blowing from the direction of the sand dunes, creating a mini sandstorm.

Being showered by particles of sand travelling at high speed is not a fun thing at all! The feeling is akin to having millions of sharp needles pricking the skin simultaneously. Ouch, ouch and OUCH!! I bet getting a tattoo will not be as painful, not to mention the significant amount of sand that went into our mouths, noses and ears too! Therefore, it is wise to wear a face mask, a pair of sunglasses and keep yourself properly covered especially when strong winds are blowing.

White Sand Dunes

Finally, we arrived safely at the white sand dunes of Mui Ne, Vietnam. The white sand dunes cover a huge area, spreading as far as the eyes can see. It looked like the Sahara desert, minus the scorching heat and scattered bones. The sand particles in which the white dunes are made of are rough and hard. Walking on the sand dunes was a challenge. It was easier to walk barefooted than with shoes or slippers.

It was just our luck that we had strong winds or a sandstorm when we visited the white sand dunes. Not wanting it to spoil our visit, we stubbornly endured the sandstorm, explored the sand dunes and took several worthy photographs. Before I forget, there is a compulsory entrance fee of 10,000 VND per person to the white sand dunes of Mui Ne, Vietnam.

Among the activities that one can do at the white sand dunes are riding an ATV (300,000 VND for 20 minutes) or sand boarding (1 USD rent for a sand board). We did neither of those because we were experiencing a sandstorm. Now, having the presence of the ATVs in the vicinity does disrupt the peace and tranquillity of the place. Loud ATVs zoomed past us countless times as we were trying to take photographs or enjoy the view to a point that it got rather annoying, but there was nothing we could do about it.

Our memorable experience at the white sand dunes would have to be the time when we lost our direction (no kidding because we wondered out too far and every direction looked the same to us, so we can’t find our way back, also because we were already tired of walking) and our intuitive driver sent an ATV to our rescue. So, in the end, my sister and I got to ride on the ATV for free thanks to our episode! Wee…lucky us!

Red Sand Dunes

After spending a whole lot of time at the white sand dunes, we hurried off to the red sand dunes of Mui Ne to catch the sunset. Unlike the white sand dunes, admission to the red sand dunes is free of charge. The red sand dunes cover a smaller area as compared to the white sand dunes, and are located by the coast of Mui Ne, Vietnam. In fact, we passed it on our way to the white sand dunes, but decided to visit it later for the sunset.

In contrast, the sand particles in which the red dunes are made of are soft and smooth, just like the texture of flour. It was enjoyable to walk barefooted on the red sand dunes. I could just roll over it but that will soil my dress, so the thought was dismissed. The red sand dunes are a popular spot for picnics and watching the sunset thanks to its picturesque view.

Wasting no time, my sister and I explored the area and took several memorable photographs. As my sister and I lay half awake on the soft warm bed, enjoying the chills of the light rain in harmony with the soothing serenade of the waves, we heard the cock crowing proudly in the distance; signalling us to wake up and get ready for the sunrise by the beach. That nostalgic moment reminded me of the time when my family and I stayed in a village by the sea, about 20 years ago where we had nature’s alarm clock to tell us the time.

Wasting no time, my sister and I got ready and made our way down to the beach located several metres away from our room. It was a chilly breezy morning for it rained the night before. Thankfully, the rain stopped raining just in time for us to enjoy the sunrise by the beach of Mui Ne, Vietnam.

That morning, we had strong gusty winds coming from the South China Sea. Because of that, the waves were rough and huge. Despite that, the fearless fishermen were seen fishing in the rough sea in their distinctive bright blue circular boats – a sight uniquely Mui Ne, Vietnam. I have to say, the fishermen bobbing up and down the waves in their adorable boats looked rather adorable!

After witnessing the sunrise, we decided to go for a stroll along the beach. As we were walking along the beach, what we thought were raindrops were actually tiny water droplets from the waves that crashed onshore. My sister and I enjoyed the occasional salt-water spray as we explored a bunch of the circular boats nearby. We could not resist taking several selfies with those boats.

The Perfect Setting For Beautiful Memorable Photographs

If you noticed, I love to take photographs of the places I go for memories. Well, most people do. The only difference is I took the effort to dress up, look good and capture my feel good moments in beautiful photographs for I feel it is a waste to spend an amount of money travelling to a most often, beautiful place for a holiday, but look rather blah or mediocre in the photos.

To me, a holiday is supposed to be a getaway from our everyday life, a chance for us to look and feel good than most of our mundane days. With those beautiful and memorable photographs I took, I will be able to look back at my travels with a sense of satisfaction and a huge smile on my face as I share my travels with my children or grandchildren in the future, inspiring them to do the same. My sister shares the same sentiment, which is why we clicked quite well throughout our travels together.

As I was saying, Saigon Café Gueshouse has one of the most beautiful settings in Mui Ne, Vietnam; on par if not better than those 4 or 5 star-rated resorts within the area. One of the reason is it has its own private beach that comes with several lovely attap huts and wooden deck chairs for guests to laze about on the beach. The other is the fact that the guesthouse is surrounded by lush greenery and countless coconut palm trees give it an exotic Caribbean-like feel – all this privilege and luxury for an affordable price you and I could afford without burning a hole in our pockets! This is what Backpacking in Style is all about! ;-)

Fresh Coconut Drink, The Sea Breeze, The Ocean & Only Us

What is a relaxation by the beach without enjoying a fresh coconut drink? Or some would prefer a glass of cocktail or a bottle of beer, or two. ;-) My sister and I enjoyed a coconut drink each as we laze on our wooden deck chairs by the beach, enjoying the gentle sea breeze. It was a lovely morning, there were no other guests in sight and we had the entire private beach to our own. How lovely!

Remember me saying that the place poses the perfect setting for taking beautiful photographs? Well, my sister and I took the opportunity to snap several memorable photographs of our own and we were very pleased with how the photographs turned out to be. After that, we went to café to have a simple vegan lunch of rice and stir-fried French beans with tofu; a humble but tasty dish nonetheless. With our stomachs full and souls happy, we were ready for our next adventure!

Mui Ne is a serene fishing village located by the South China Sea in Southern Vietnam, therefore it only makes sense if we stay by the beach during our visit there. This time round, having learnt the trade of my impeccable research skills from yours truly, my sister did the research and discovered a lovely guesthouse for us to stay that comes with its own private beach at a reasonable price. This was perfect because we wanted to spend our time lazing on the beach besides exploring the famous sand dunes of Mui Ne, Vietnam without burning a hole in our pockets.

A Family-Run Establishment – Saigon Café Guesthouse By The Beach of Mui Ne

After spending half a day travelling on the sleeper bus from Saigon (Ho Chi Minh) to Phan Tiet, Mui Ne (read the story here), my sister and I was dropped off right in front of Saigon Café Guesthouse at about 8pm. True to its name, the front section of the guesthouse is actually an open-air café that serves both Vietnamese and Western dishes to its customers. The wonderful rooms are located behind the café, barely a stone’s throw away from the beach. Because of that, not many people know of this establishment, thus making it a hidden gem in Mui Ne, Vietnam.

We made our way towards what seemed like a counter within the café and proceeded to check-in to our room with the assistance of a young woman named Lin who spoke little English. From there, we found out that Saigon Café Guesthouse is a family-run business. Next to the café was the building where Lin and her entire family live. Because of that, young children were seen playing about as the elderly leisurely enjoyed watching local programmes on the television at a certain area of café.

Vietnam’s Foreign Visitors Check-In/Check-Out Passport Safekeeping Law

For your info, Vietnam law requires foreign visitors to handover our passports to the establishment for/during check-in and safe-keeping purposes where they will keep our passports until we check-out of the establishment. I was very reluctant to handover our passports to Lin for safety reasons, but no amount of excuse or reasoning was able to prevent Lin from taking away our precious passports. She assured us that our passports will be kept in a safe place and be given back to us when we check-out of Saigon Café Guesthouse 3 days later.

A Simple Vietnamese Home-Cooked Dinner & It’s Off To Bed!

After we received the keys to our room, my sister and I ordered some food and drinks for dinner and chilled at the café. A good look at the café’s menu revealed an extensive variety of food and drinks for guests/customers to enjoy at an affordable price. One could enjoy luxurious seafood such as crabs and lobsters, and sip red/white wine or have a bottle of chilled beer by the beach.

Travelling on a budget, we decided to have a simple yet fulfilling Vietnamese meal of steamed fragrant rice, stewed mushrooms with tofu, and stir-fried vegetables with meat. To wash it down, we each had a glass of chilled mango juice. Lin was not only the manager of the guesthouse, she was also the cook and a good cook she was! We savoured the mouth-watering dishes as soon as it arrived and retired to our room after.

A simple yet fulfilling Vietnamese meal of steamed fragrant rice, stewed mushrooms with tofu, and stir-fried vegetables with meat. Delicious!

Highly Satisfactory Standard Double Room By The Beach At Saigon Café Guesthouse

Based on our research, my sister and I specifically requested for the standard double room nearest to the beach, on the upper floor of the guesthouse. We got our wish granted and had in our opinion and most of their satisfied customers’ opinion, the best room with a view of the private beach at Saigon Café Guesthouse! It costs approximately 420,000 Dong for a night's stay in the standard double room.

Our first impression of our standard double room: it was clean, spacious and comfortable. The room has sufficient storage place for our luggage and huge windows that allow natural light and fresh air into the room. The bathroom was equally clean and spacious. The hot shower and air-conditioning in the room was working well too. And, the breathtaking view from the room is something to die for! It was how we imagined it to be – perfect bliss!

The only thing that we would like to point out was the television in the room was not able to get a reception but hey, that did not bother us at all for we will be spending most of our time outdoors. I took the effort to inform Lin about the problem. Other than that, my sister and I simply love the room to bits!! And the best part is, we can hear the soothing sound of the waves crashing upon the shore even with the windows closed. It was not long before my sister and I got cosy on the bed and dozed off with happy thoughts of the adventures that await us first thing in the morning. :-)

Lo and behold, I present you the enchanted flooded forest of Kampong Phluk! This is the magical place that I wanted to be, the place that I wanted to visit so much, the reason why I chose to visit Siem Reap, Cambodia besides for its magnificent temples and jungle ruins. This was the highlight of my trip to Siem Reap, Cambodia!

Like A Page Out Of A Fairytale Book

What can be more soothing and enchanting than to cruise leisurely along a labyrinth of partly submerged living trees in the quiet countryside, connecting and feeling one with Mother Nature? It was at the flooded forest of Kampong Phluk, Siem Reap that I embraced my inner child and escaped into a world of fairytale that came to life.

As my sister and I cruised along the enchanted flooded forest, I felt just like Disney’s Pocahontas; a strong and free-spirited character with utmost respect and love for nature and the land around her. With the soft breeze caressing our face, the canopy of foliage above us provided shade from the sun’s rays; occasionally slipping through the leaves to create a wonderful ambience for us to enjoy. Like a little girl, I was overjoyed by the wonderful sight and was humming to the tune of “The Colours of the Wind” by Vanessa Williams as we explored the flooded forest.

A Scenic Small Boat a.k.a “Sampan” Ride Through The Flooded Forest

After our humbling visit to the floating village of Kampong Phluk, our young captain brought us to a floating structure located nearby the village. Right next to it was the much anticipated flooded forest of Kampong Phluk. The floating structure was the ticketing station for the small boat a.k.a “sampan” ride into the flooded forest. Many visitors were seen buying the tickets and waiting in line to get on-board their small boat a.k.a “sampan” for an unforgettable ride of their lifetime to one of the most scenic spots in Siem Reap, Cambodia and Asia.

My sister and I effortlessly purchased the tickets and paid $5 each for the additional 15-20 minutes small boat ride through the flooded forest of Kampong Phluk. There was no camera/photography fee which is a good thing. We boarded our “sampan” and began our exploration in less than a minute. Our elderly guide spoke very little English and was not interested to make small talk with us, but that did not bother us for we had a fun time enjoying the view and taking beautiful photographs.

As we cruised in between the submerged trees, we met several other visitors who were travelling in groups. Our guide was kind enough to paddle at a slow and steady pace, making sure that we enjoyed the ride and was able to take good photos. If one is lucky or unlucky, animals such as snakes or monitor lizards can be seen swimming past the boats. We passed by a man-made structure that looks like a platform walk and what seems like a restaurant in the air too. Time passed by quickly when we are having a good time and before we know it, it was time for us to head back to our big boat. We thanked our guide and gave her a $1 tip for her hard work.

Walking Amongst The Trees and A Visit To The Sky Restaurant & Bar

Besides cruising through the enchanted flooded forest of Kampong Phluk, to our delight, my sister and I got to walk amongst the trees, on the sky-high platform walk above and if we wish, have lunch at the Sky Restaurant & Bar.

After our short but memorable boat ride through the enchanted flooded forest, our young captain brought us to the flight of stairs where the sky-high platform walk begins and ends. The platform walk is free. Without hesitation, we left the boat and walked through the scenic sky-high path, enjoying the view along the way. A certain section of the path had trees with autumn-coloured leaves in hues of red, yellow and orange! It was a beautiful sight! My sister and I took several pretty photos of it.

At the middle of the platform walk was a nicely decorated restaurant and bar where visitors can wine and dine as they please while enjoying the view from above. The place looks like the perfect place for an exotic wedding venue or a quiet gathering with family members or a bunch of friends.

After that, my sister and I made our way back to our boat and back to our tuk tuk for our journey back to Siem Reap town. We passed by the flooded forest and floating village again for the last time and bid farewell to it. That concluded our enlightening journey to the floating village and flooded forest of Kampong Phluk, Siem Reap, but our adventures in Siem Reap are yet to come to an end.
