Autodesk Infrastructure Modeler can help drive stakeholder buy-in and inform decision making with visually rich proposals for transportation, land, water, or energy infrastructure projects. And users can share proposed infrastructure models to give designers a head start.

Model existing infrastructure—Use 2D CAD, GIS, Building Information Modeling (BIM), and raster data.

Import detailed models—Incorporate detailed models from AutoCAD® Civil 3D®, AutoCAD® Map 3D, and other software.

Stylize infrastructure models—Depict the local environment more realistically.
Work in 3D—Show proposed roads, water, and land features.

Overlay GIS data—Create 3D thematic maps to help inform decisions.
Manage infrastructure proposals—

Create and manage multiple alternatives in a single model.

Communicate visually rich infrastructure proposals—Shift between design proposals and evaluate alternatives from any viewpoint, and capture rendered images or recorded videos.

What is Autodesk Cloud?

Autodesk Cloud is a collection of web-based features, products, and services that currently includes:

Autodesk Cloud documents – Use this service to store your design documents in the cloud, so you can access them anytime, anywhere and easily share them with colleagues, clients and other users.

Autodesk Design Review mobile app – Access your Autodesk Cloud documents on the go with this mobile app. Review 2D and 3D DWF™ files on your mobile device. Redline and annotate 2D drawings while in the field or out of the office. Available free of charge.*

Autodesk Inventor optimization (Coming Soon!**)—Extend ideation and simulation beyond the desktop by testing the performance of multiple design options in the cloud. Available with an Autodesk Subscription to Autodesk Product Design Suite Premium or Autodesk Product Design Suite Ultimate.

What is the advantage for Autodesk Subscription customers?

Autodesk Subscription customers receive three times the amount of storage space in Autodesk Cloud (3 GB per seat on Subscription). More storage capacity means you can store, view and share more design documents via the cloud. This translates into more mobility and more power to improve project results, increase collaboration, and accelerate innovation. In addition, customers with an Autodesk Subscription to select products or suites have exclusive access to Autodesk Cloud services, such as:

Autodesk Cloud rendering

Autodesk Inventor optimization (Coming Soon!**)

Autodesk’s data management software works with the Microsoft collaboration platform to simplify business intelligence, content management, search and sharing functions for intranet and Internet sites ― all while building a crucial connection between design teams and an extended business enterprise.

Vault works with SharePoint 2010 to help enterprises be more productive and profitable by facilitating sharing of and access to information throughout the lifecycle of any project,” said Çağlayan Arkan, General Manager, Worldwide Manufacturing & Resources Sector at Microsoft Corp. “Vault provides the world’s designers, architects, engineers, builders and manufacturers with a complete view of their information, while enabling access across the entire organization.”
On any design project, hundreds of people may be using dozens of specialized applications to create thousands of models and drawings. In addition to this design data, a significant amount of “nondesign” information surrounds most projects: contracts, bid documents, photographs, emails and more. Vault working with Microsoft provides an extended enterprise — including nondesign professionals — with the ability to share and manage engineering and design data through familiar Microsoft SharePoint 2010 workflows. The solution takes advantage of features and functionality provided in SharePoint 2010 and Autodesk Vault 2012, giving SharePoint 2010 users direct access to engineering and design data within Vault, including easy search and navigation, and the ability to view and print design data.

Additional benefits include:

SharePoint 2010 users now have direct access to Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Digital Prototyping data within Vault and can incorporate it into existing enterprise data, tools and processes.

Autodesk Vault 2012 users now have the ability to take advantage of the latest social computing enhancements provided in Microsoft SharePoint 2010 through video conferencing, capturing discussions, voting mechanisms, mining expertise and business intelligence.

Federated searching enables users to do a single search to quickly aggregate results from both SharePoint and Vault applications, helping users increase productivity without changing the way they work.

Seamlessly allows technology from SharePoint 2010 and Autodesk Vault 2012 that runs on Microsoft Windows-based servers, utilizes Microsoft Web Services and SQL Server technology. <u1:p></u1:p>

The collaboration between Microsoft and Autodesk extends beyond SharePoint 2010 to Microsoft Office 2010, including Microsoft Outlook 2010, Microsoft Word 2010, Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 and Microsoft Excel 2010, enabling users to be more productive with their everyday tools. Colleagues, customers and partners can share content and information in a familiar environment, whether reading a DOC file or printing a DWG drawing. The solution is easy to deploy, enabling customers to get up and running immediately. <u1:p></u1:p>

This is especially true for design and manufacturing organizations working with globally distributed teams.

Availability
<u1:p></u1:p>Autodesk Vault Collaboration AEC, Autodesk Vault Collaboration and Autodesk Vault Professional 2012 for SharePoint 2010 is now available.
Project Silverstar

Project Silverstar for AutoCAD® Civil 3D® 2012 is a free* technology preview that provides cloud-based optimization for vertical road alignments. Project Silverstar uses a new numerical cloud algorithm that uses modern mathematical optimization techniques to find optimal for given horizontal alignments.

Points of Vertical Intersection (PVIs) are created automatically and the vertical and horizontal position of these PVIs are optimized with respect to total earthwork cost. The algorithm can handle multiple ground surface layers with different earthwork costs, and incorporates borrow and waste pits for different materials.

Only the Existing Ground (EG) centerline is needed for input. For greater accuracy of volume computations, centerline offsets can be submitted as well.

Results are sent back to the user and can be imported directly in to AutoCAD Civil 3D 2012 via ASCII files or LandXML.

LATEST UPDATE

Based on user feedback, the latest update includes the following corrections:

Offset values are now set for offset profiles if the profile name contains non-ANSI characters.
The default min-slope value is now set at 0.3%.
A tooltip is displayed if the min-slope value is greater than 2%.
The position of the About button is now correct while resizing the wizard.
Thanks to everyone for the feedback provided. Keep it coming.

AVAILABILITY

This is an English language utility that can be installed on any language version of AutoCAD Civil 3D 2012 (64-bit only). Once installed, the new utility can be accessed and launched from the AutoCAD Civil 3D Toolbox. Although the technology preview will operate until August 1, 2012, the data craeted during the technology preview will continue to be valid even after the technology preview no longer operates.
With Infrastructure Modeler you can incorporate existing 2D CAD, GIS, BIM, and raster data to quickly create models that more realistically depict the local environment. You can more easily evaluate multiple design alternatives in the context of the existing environment by overlaying GIS data and using infrastructure sketching and proposal management tools. And you can communicate visually rich proposals of these alternatives with interactive navigations, rendered images, and recorded videos.

Conceptual Design for Infrastructure

Infrastructure Modeler conceptual design software helps project engineers, and GIS and planning professionals quickly create, evaluate, and communicate compelling infrastructure project proposals in the context of the existing natural and built environment. Use Infrastructure Modeler to drive faster stakeholder buy-in and more confident decision making with visually rich proposals of your next transportation, land, water, or energy project.

Create: Quickly Build Models of Existing Infrastructure

With Autodesk Infrastructure Modeler, you can streamline your conceptual design workflows by building 3D models of existing infrastructure from readily available GIS, Building Information Modeling (BIM), CAD, and raster data. Quickly transform 2D road centerlines, building footprints, or pipe centerlines into 3D models. Whether you are planning a city block, an entire region, or a new long-distance transportation corridor, Autodesk Infrastructure Modeler can help you with the task.

You can further enhance the accuracy of your infrastructure models by incorporating detailed designs of existing buildings and infrastructure from AutoCAD Civil 3D software, the Autodesk Revit family of products, and other modeling software.

Evaluate: Easily Develop and Compare Multiple Proposals

The most powerful capability of Autodesk Infrastructure Modeler is the ability to explore future infrastructure in the context of today’s environment.

Using simple yet powerful industry-specific sketching tools, you can rapidly lay out, model, and visualize proposed roads and land and water features in the context of existing conditions. You can even overlay GIS Data, such as property boundaries or protected forest lands, to help inform conceptual design decisions. Study transportation corridors with the easy-to-use road tool that automatically grades the terrain. Sketch roads, buildings, and land and water features for urban planning studies. Import water or energy system designs from GIS, CAD, and BIM software to facilitate utility master planning studies. Whatever conceptual design you can imagine, Infrastructure Modeler can help bring it to life.

With Infrastructure Modeler, you can evaluate multiple conceptual design alternatives with robust proposal management tools that enable you to quickly switch between alternatives to see their impact on the surrounding environment. Once the winning design alternative is selected, you can import data from Infrastructure Modeler into Civil 3D or AutoCAD

® Map 3D® software to continue with detailed design without having to start from scratch. This integrated approach reduces the need for redundant and costly rework, saving you time and money.
Project Newport brings architectural designs to life by expressing design intent, understandably and in context, at every stage of a project.

No prior knowledge of 3D visualization, animation, or rendering is needed to learn Project Newport quickly. Every architect can create great-looking, easy-to-use presentations. Spend more time designing and less time revising. Avoid costly mistakes by communicating building information modeling (BIM) data in context. Bring together elements from multiple Autodesk applications. Add realistic, real-time sun and sky. Explore and share design options with camera animations and walkthroughs in either stylized or photorealistic views.

Maintain the fidelity of the data in your Autodesk® Revit® Architecture and Autodesk® 3ds Max® Design software ecosystem with integrated Autodesk® FBX®, ProMaterials™, and mental ray® technologies. Quickly import geometry, materials, animation, and object metadata from Revit Architecture and 3ds Max Design into Newport, and export scenes into 3ds Max Design for advanced visualization.

Architectural Consulting, located in Charlotte NC, built a private cloud that included their high performance graphics workstations (HPGW). A private cloud differs from the public cloud providers such as Amazon Web Services or Google by the fact that the cloud computing infrastructure and resources are controlled by the individual business that deploys it.

In general, most of the current discussion around cloud computing has been dealing with the servers (or back-end systems). Only recently have businesses begun to put their desktops and workstations into the cloud. Little’s cloud is the first AEC workstation cloud in production and is on track to reduce our workstation and laptop hardware expense by 67% ($2M) over the next 10 years.

Bleustreak
Autodesk Project Bluestreak is a project team centric cloud-based collaboration solution that helps AEC project teams collaborate informally and coordinate their work efficiently. Bluestreak simplifies AEC project team communication by consolidating the information silos used alongside design, analysis, and information management applications.

Bluestreak is the first collaboration solution to integrate informal project team communication and automated notifications from AEC applications, starting with Revit. By combining team communication tools with Revit worksharing notices and one-click file access in a compact desktop app, Bluestreak consolidates multiple tools for BIM processes, making team modeling more efficient.

What does Project Structure Generator do?
Project Structure Generator for Autodesk Revit Structure and Autodesk Revit Architecture is a technology preview that provides a connection between massing models and objects created during conceptual design. Project Structural Generator enables structural engineers and architects to:

Automatically create and visualize a physical model of the structure with mass objects

Generate variants of the physical and analytical model with structural systems based on the massing model.

Predict volume and weight of materials used.

Extend model to Revit Structure or Revit Architecture.

Extend massing model to structural analysis with Project Storm a cloud based technology preview on Autodesk Labs that allows static analysis to be performed or to Autodesk Robot Structural Analysis Professional software

Last week the Roombook Extension for Revit Architecture 2011 was released to the Subscription Center. This was previously only available for German customers (applicable for their VOB measurement standard) and has now been updated for an international audience. The description from Subs Center:

"The Roombook Extension helps calculate the surface area of walls, floors and ceiling elements, room circumferences and the total number of furnishing elements within a project. In addition to the automated detection of room areas and surfaces, this extension helps users configure these elements manually to local requirements, as well as achieve more accurate model take-offs. Quantified results can be exported to Microsoft® Excel® software and Autodesk® Quantity Takeoff (QTO) software."

In essence this extension allows you to quantify materials beyond what is possible in the core Revit product, for example applying height reductions for specific materials and manually applying materials to sub-areas.
One reason is that although individual component parts may be perfect and error free in isolation, when they come together in a collaborative environment, the issues are all too common.
Let’s face it, buildings are complex! It’s no wonder we have conflicts between disciplines. Autodesk Navisworks enables you to combine the various disciplines, from disparate sources, into a single model environment. Clash Detective can then be used to identify any potential conflicts between the disciplines, givingyou the opportunity to resolve these while the project remains in the digital stage. The potential savings in time and money are obvious. (Click View tab ➤ Workspace panel ➤ Windows drop-down ➤ Clash Detective.)

The best advice for defining clash tests is to search for clashes where you would expect to find them. Let Clash Dective help you, not replace you. If you try searching the entire model for everything that touches something else, you will be inundated with false positives items that are meant to touch. If, however, you define clash tests based on your real-world experiences of where things go wrong, and don’t fit on site, then Autodesk Navisworks can help you find and resolve these quickly.

Mouse over the Clash Detective window and pin it open.

The Select tab is where we define our clash test. There is a Left and a Right side, both containing an identical copy of the Selection Tree.

Under the Left and a Right sides, you will see the tabs Standard, Compact, and so on. Scroll these to the right and select the Sets tab (for both Left and Right).

In the Left tree, select Supply Air System.

In the Right tree, select Structural Framing Steel.

The Run Type should be set to Hard, looking for physical intersections between items on the left and items on the right.

In the Clash Detective window, click Start to perform the clash test.

Five clashes should be found. Now let’s review these results

Go to the Results tab and click Clash 4.

You will be automatically zoomed into the clash area, however, you may not have a clear view or you may have objects (like the ceiling) obscuring your view. Use the Orbit tool to move around the clashing objects to find a preferred viewpoint. In the Display group, select the Dim Other option to gray out all other objects.

Performance:
Use Copy/Monitor to monitor changes to the smallest number of elements required to coordinate efforts across teams. Overuse of Copy/Monitor without thoughtful planning can result in performance degradation.
File names:
After you link a model to the current project and establish relationships between elements for monitoring, do not change file names for the linked model or the current project. If you do, the monitoring relationships cannot be maintained.
Grids:
Do not associate grids with a scope box until after you have copied the grids from a linked model to the host project. You cannot view scope boxes that are defined in a linked model.
Columns:
When using Copy/Monitor to copy columns from an architectural model to a structural model, use the Split Columns by Levels option. For example, if the architect adds columns that span levels 1 - 4, the engineer can split the columns at each level. This design avoids problems with the analytical model. See Specifying Options for Copy/Monitor and Copy/Monitor Parameters for Columns.

Walls:
To ensure that you copy all walls in the model, use a selection box and a filter in a plan view, or use a 3D orthographic view.
Floors:
Use Copy/Monitor to copy a floor from an architectural model to a structural model. To make it a structural floor, edit the floor’s properties in Revit Structure to specify its Structural parameter. See Modifying Instance Properties.
Shape-edited floors:
If you use Copy/Monitor to copy a shape-edited floor (or slab), the copied element is flat. Use the Slope Arrow tool to slope slabs when possible, or use a separate slab in each building model. See Sloped Surfaces.
Spaces:
If you link an architectural model to an MEP model, use the architectural model to place spaces in the MEP model. After linking the architectural model, open a view in Revit MEP and select the linked model.
Click Modify / RVT Links / tabElement Properties panel / Type Properties. In the Type Properties dialog, select Room Bounding. You can then reference elements in the linked model when creating spaces. See Room Boundaries in Linked Models.
You want to know how the view range (primary range and view depth) of an underlay is determined.

A cut plane is not used to determine the view range of an underlay. Instead, any object that overlaps the underlay range is displayed in its entirety. For example, if you set Level 1 as the underlay, the resulting underlay range extends from Level 1 to Level 2. In general, an underlay does not replicate the contents of any other view

View range Slab

You set the view range so that it cuts above a floor or slab in a plan view, but the floor or slab was still visible.

A floor or slab will be visible in a plan view if it is partially above the view depth, or if it is within 4 feet (approximately 1.21 meters) of the bottom clip.

To prevent the floor or slab from being visible in plan view, you need to adjust the bottom clip so that it is more than 4 feet above the floor or slab and set the view depth so that it does not include any part of the floor or slab. Follow these steps:

In plan view, click View menu / View Properties.

Click the Edit button for the View Range parameter.

Enter a value for both the Bottom Offset, under Primary Range, and the Level Offset, under View Depth, that is more than 4 feet from the floor or slab

For more information, see Default Worksets.
The Worksets dialog provides the following information:

Active workset designates the workset to which new elements are added. The active workset can be a workset that is editable by you or one that is owned by another team member. You can add elements to worksets you do not own.

The active workset name also displays on the Collaborate tab > Worksets panel and the status bar.

Gray Inactive Workset Graphics. Displays all elements in the drawing area that are not part of the active workset as gray. This has no effect on printing.

Name. Indicates the name of the workset. You can rename all user-created worksets.

Editable. Indicates the editable status of a workset. You cannot change editable status until you synchronize with central.

Owner. Indicates the owner of the workset. If the Editable status of the workset is Yes, or you change the Editable status of the workset to Yes, then you are the owner of the workset. The Owner value is the user name that is listed on the General tab of the Options dialog. For more information on the Options dialog, see Revit Options.

Borrowers. Lists the users who are currently borrowing an element from the workset. If there is more than one borrower, you can view the list of borrowers from the drop-down list.

Opened. Indicates if a workset is open (Yes) or closed (No). Elements in open worksets are visible in the project, elements in closed worksets are not.

Show. Allows you to show or hide the different types of project worksets (User-Created, Families, Project Standards, Views) that display in the Name list.

Worksets and Element Borrowing
Generally, it is recommended that you work in your local copy of the central model and not make worksets editable. When you edit an element that is not being edited by another team member, you automatically become the borrower of the element and can make the changes you need. It is recommended that you synchronize with central frequently as you work. Synchronizing relinquishes borrowed elements by default, allowing other team members to edit them.

Use worksets when you want to reserve parts of a project so that only the assigned user can edit the elements in that workset. Also consider these benefits for creating worksets:

Convenience for editing. Dividing a project into worksets makes it easier to make whole sections of a project editable at once.

Visibility control. You can control overall visibility in a project when you link Revit models into other Revit projects. For example, it is often convenient to turn off visibility of the Shared Levels and Grids workset when linking Revit models so that you do not have to turn off levels and grids individually in each view.

Default Worksets
When you enable worksharing, Revit Architecture creates default worksets and assigns project elements and settings to these worksets. The default worksets are:

User-created. Revit Architecture creates 2 default user-created worksets.

Shared Levels and Grids. Contains all existing levels, grids, and reference planes. You can rename this workset.

Workset1. Contains all existing model elements in the project. When you create worksets, you can reassign elements from Workset1 into the appropriate workset. You can rename this workset, but you cannot delete it.

Families. Each family that is loaded in the project is assigned to a separate workset. You cannot rename or delete family worksets.

Views. Contains all project view worksets. For example, Floor Plan Level 1 view is assigned to a workset called View: “Floor Plan Level 1". View worksets contain view properties and any view-specific elements, such as annotations, dimensions, or text notes. When you add view-specific elements to a view, they are automatically added to the appropriate view workset.
You cannot make a view workset the active workset, but you can change its editable status so that you can modify a view-specific element (for example, a section in a plan view). If the associated workset for the section view is not editable by you, change the editable status of the workset so that you can edit it. See Making Worksets Editable.
You cannot reassign view-specific elements from a view workset to another workset. View worksets cannot be renamed or deleted.

Project Standards. Contains all project-wide settings defined for the project (for example, line styles and fill patterns). You cannot rename or delete project standard worksets.

Can't find what you're looking for?
If you have searched unsuccessfully for specific information and you think it should be covered in the Revit WikiHelp, create a stub page with an appropriate title. Be sure to add a sentence or two explaining the information you’re looking for, because we cannot publish pages with no content.
If you see a stub page that needs content and you have information on that topic, please add it. Anyone can add to WikiHelp pages: users, Autodesk team members, industry experts. If you have the information, please share your Revit knowledge with the community.
